- You can write and you're probably already doing better at it than you think.
This channel is all about spreading positivity and inspiration for writing so I thought it was long past time to make a video like this.

Dropping my first book in June. I'm so grateful for your sincerity. You some across with so much warmth and encouragement, and I very much enjoy it. Thank you for your time and insight.
That's so exciting!! Congratulations on reaching this monumental part of your writing journey. If you haven't already, please consider using some ARCs (Advanced Reader Copies) they are perhaps the biggest thing I *wish* I had done with my books.
Take some time to do a victory lap. Publishing your first book is *huge*. Congratulations!
And thank you as well for your kind words. They're very appreciated and exactly why I make videos for this channel.
Thank you, Mark.
Of course
7ish years... wow, that's what I didn't know I needed to hear.
It's so easily overlooked how much time is behind established authors. And even if they tell you they take ~a year to write a book, I guess what you don't notice is the years spent to become able to write a book that quickly - or even in the first place.
I will definitly endeavour to be kinder and gentler to myself, settling in for the long run.
One of the hardest things in any creative endeavor is not to compare yourself to others in the same space. I generally take 2 years to release a book, with my most recent full length book more likely to take closer to 4 years. If I compared myself to Brandon Sanderson's output...phew.
Your writing journey is your own and there's probably a lot more similarities with other authors than you might initially think, especially early on. You've got this!
Here’s a video idea for you, inspired by your current title. “Every writer has a writing space… what’s yours?”
Is there a desk beneath that shrine to writers behind you? Or do you write elsewhere? Are you a pen and paper guy for your drafting stage, or does it all go directly into a word processor? Or are you a coffee shop writer?
I’m definitely a pen & paper guy for my outlining and first draft, but I’ll also test out and refine some early passages on a manual typewriter, just to get a better sense of how it presents on a page in something close to its final form. It’s a technique I’ve found to be especially useful to sorting out difficult punctuation and wording options with poetry.
I would love to do a video like this with viewer submissions.
Could not agree more.
Write like no one is reading, edit as if you are reciting over a campfire to enthral an audience of strangers for the thousandth time.
That's what makes me feel like a proper author the most. That and when I learn something entirely new and go, "There's a story in that."
One of the strangest moments feeling like a "proper author" for me was when I picked up a sci-fi novel about a year after I published my second book and I started thinking in my head about the things I'd have written differently and the things that sounded really good that I wanted to learn from.
@Just Start Writing I used to think I was a snob for picking apart other's hard work, but it's certainly made me a more reliable and objective editor for my own hard work.
