The Timbers in WV are pretty evenly split between yellow and deep black. It’s an old wives tale around here that the black ones are males and the yellow ones are female lol. I have always been blown away at how the ones you find look with the bronze stripe down the top of the back.

That is the most beautiful rattlesnake I've ever seen, and the most unreal looking natural morph of anything as well! Just a spectacular example of nature at its finest.

It's a dark phase timber rattlesnake, they come in yellow phase and dark phase, and different shades in between.
I beIieve the darker ones are usually found in higher elevations and lighter ones in lower elevations.
We have dark and yellow phase timber rattlesnakes here in PA. Love the dark ones, but you can still see the pattern underneath.

Most of my snake encounters in South Alabama have been pretty common except the other week. Most snakes will run from you when you walk upon them. This snake didn't run, He stood his ground and rattled his tail at me. I realized it might have been a rattle snake but it's color was black. When new people clear their land, our snakes go running. I decided not to mess with him, I yielded the path went around. Didn't realize it was rare though.

snake, but what a day with the cool observations of unusual herps/ herps in unusual conditions.
The aesthetic of a cottonmouth sitting on the surface of a small pool or next to it in the rocks and leaf litter is really nice. Neat to see such a concentration of animals. It seems like those cracks are pretty important for the pickerel frogs too, at least during those conditions.

Been wet for months and haven't seen a snake out since April. Really looking forward to some warm weather. My neck of the woods has you beat hands down for most venomous, but you leave us for dead as far as variety and colour- would love to do some herping over there. I mostly find eastern browns around my farm- the biggest was seven foot three. I like them a lot- apparently I'm weird:) Take care mate. Timbers have a certain propensity to be darker as you go into higher mountainous areas. It's speculated that it allows them to absorb the sun better on cooler days. I would agree. I live in the South Mountains of North Carolina and I've seen 4 or 5 all black timber rattlers over the years. It's definitely rare treat to find one like that and what's interesting is the woods where you are look identical to the woods in the south mountains. Do you think it's possible it's a hybrid where a canebrake and timber mated?

Even in dry months during breeding season we used to find them in their normal territory despite the normal areas being dry. I believe it was done by the US Forest Service.

You’re right about the black phase ones, much more common about 100 miles north of my location (I live on Long Island, NY. No venomous (except rear fanged Hognose and garter snakes) here.). There is an area off the Hudson River near Bear Mountain State Park that has black phase, “canebrake” pattern, and melanistic. The melanistic ones stand out from the local black phase due to the latent patterning. We even had some that are a combination of the patterned and black phase, really interesting to see. I used to see them all the time near Silvermine Lake, but haven’t seen one there in decades. The zoo at the park also used to have one, but in haven’t been there in a few years either. Most of the snakes that I see upstate (that’s what metro NYers refer to everything north of Yonkers) are of the harmless variety now. Been quite a few years since the last time I saw any Copperheads as well. It’s difficult when it comes to snakes anywhere, people are so misunderstanding of the animals in general. I’m just happy to see any snake from time to time.

There is no rear fanged venomous garter snake in the us an as for the hog nose there venom isn’t even effective on a lot of humans must be allergic that’s if there tiny fangs can even get to you funny how people seem to think they know stuff.. big nose and garter snakes would never be classified as a deadly snake as if a cane break would.

LOL, at first its thinking "well, its making so much noise so its not trying to sneak up on me, so I guess not dangerous" but later its thinking "dude won't leave me a lone. help! stranger danger!"

Congrats on your awesome find! I live in NY about 45 miles NW of NYC and I sometimes see black phase timbers, but not as black as the one you found.
