My director described the french horn solo as lulling people into a false sense of safety and the flute solo as announcing your arrival to Purgatory and that makes me quite happy

Fits pretty well to the poem, seeing as The Purgatorio can range from being pretty calm, to confusing, to outright horrifying.
The addition of the vocals singing "Gloria in excelsis deo" is also a great addition because if you've ever read it, you'd know that everyone in every level of purgatory sings some sort of hymn.

My teacher wanted to sight read this, so he came up to the sax section and said, "Yeah, if one of you could sight read the soprano solo, that'd be great"

My teacher has told stories of teaching this song, and having some ... interesting results with the groans

Played this in band back in high school. Scary song for those who hadn't heard it before. We also did Symphony No.1 (In Memoriam Dresden, 1945) another scary song about the Allied fire bombing of Dresden in WWII.

I love this!!! Impressive, the symphony orchestra in my daughter's ex-high school played it and it was impressive. My daughter was the lead clarinet player.

The part going from 3:30 to about 4:15 reminds me so much of "It's hard work" from Spirited Away. It's kinda fitting too, I'd say
