I was in Florence, the birthplace of Dante, today and hearing this. While I was approaching the Piazza di Santa Corce and I saw the great monument of Dante, this segment 29:44 was playing in my headphone. Gave me goosebumps!
wild stingray I’m also playing the ascension. In your band what’s your percussion doing during the singing part? I noticed this band didn’t do what’s written. In mine, we have one player bowing the vibes and a bunch of others using crystal glasses pitched to C to make the eerie ringing tone
Logan Mazer hi! I’m one of the percussionists in the video:) we bowed two octaves of crotales on C and G. We initially used singing bowls but preferred the overtones on the crotales!
Amazing. Dante was a genious, and his work is just fantastic. Robert W Smith and all the orchestra made really a great job :D 5:07 "LUCYFER, THE DEVIL HIMSELF" THAT'S EPIC
I played timpani on this piece in high school. What an epic piece of music! Too bad my music program in my high school was trash and we could barely fudge our way through it. I always wanted to perform this piece with an ensemble of talented, dedicated musicians. That day never came for me.
I was kind of annoyed with the narration in the beginning because I just wanted to get to the piece, but when he said "I SEE HIM IN THE FLESH, LUCIFER, THE DEVIL HIMSELF" I got insane goosebumps
The entire piece was fantastic, but I must say that Inferno was my favorite movement. I mean, I might be playing that solo at the beginning sometime in my life (at the very least I hope).
Brooke I played the inferno and transposed the solo to English Horn, I think it sounds a lot better at the beginning. You should take a listen to it. ruclips.net/video/uKHCxGev-LE/видео.html
Playing this piece next Saturday. I noticed something weird while listening to this rendition with the score at hand: from 26:42 on (bar 11) and after 29:28 (bar 60) in Paradiso: The mallet player is playing a dotted 8th Bb and 16th C instead of a 16th Bb and dotted 8th C. I wonder if this was intended or a weird fluke noone noticed during practice, because it gives a whole different vibe (percussionist pun right here) to that piece.
Was such an amazing piece to play. we had combined with all the other schools in my area and my god was this such an amazing piece to play. im a percussionist and when i say it was the most fun ive ever had playing a piece, it was truly such an experience
this whole piece is absolutely magical and this band seriously brought it to life. inferno has had my heart since i first heard it from my high school wind ensemble, but now hearing all of the movements, paradiso is just so ethereal and "divine" and grand. this entire performance was just so awe inspiring also, am i seeing things or is that both a soprano AND a bass sax together in the same ensemble???? :O
RIP Robert W. Smith. Greatest composer, teacher, and musician I have ever met. Your work lives on in us

@@altraxgd4873bro what’s wrong with you
I played that trumpet solo in the inferno. That whole piece is no joke, they did a great job.
lmao i noticed the mistake you made mid way through altho i'd like to know why you chose to go that fast during the solo
@@TheWatermelonLioni think he meant when he played with a different band and he wasnt in this one
The narration should be a requirement of all performances of these pieces.

We did the ascension for marching band in 2002. Best damn show ever. Topped with a ten yard dash and diamond drill. 🔥

This entire piece touches my soul...
It moves your whole Being.
We're playing this in my school, and I had no idea there was narration; this was amazing

Which part did you play?
io ho i brividi ogni volta che lo riguardo! bellissimo! bravissimi !
My band teacher decided we’ll be doing all four movements for our spring concert😭😭
Omg who's the narrator? His voice is heavenly!!!!! Full of emotion that awakens the deepest passion resonating with the soul!
I just cant help but laugh at the fact that the lick is the main melody at 21:30
Wow I didn't notice that until you said something 😂😂😂
Our band performed this the year my mom passed and they dedicated ‘Paradiso’ to my mom and you guys performed it wonderfully! 💕
That's really thoughtful that your band did that! I'm so sorry about your mother. I'm sure she would have loved your performance.
Well now I’m crying. Thank you very much!
Aww that’s so sweet, I really wish I could have been there😢😢😢this piece is among the greatest in the repertoire!!!!
I played this on percussions in inferno I played chains on the ground 😂
Independent stroke runs got me slumped at the marimba
I watched this entire thing and it was incredible from the inferno all the way to paradise it was a great journey
Absolutely stunning.
one word. INCREDIBLE!
17:22 that percussion solo ATE!
Great job guys
I will pay every band director in DCI for them to play this with the narration
Praise God
Parabéns, muito lindo!
am I the only one who sees a similarity in rhythm between 7:43 and the spring rounds from the rite of spring?

Good job!!!
Does anyone have the text that is spoken by the concert host?
It's actually taken from The Divine Comedy, written by Dante Alighieri and translated by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow.
did anyone else at 9:45 hear the sax come in early
i am playing the ascension 🙂
Where can I get the scores in PDF?
Iván Velázquez López on Alfred music. Just search up Robert w smith divine comedy and one of them should show up
JW Pepper and Alfred Music both have all 4. They're sold separately, though.
I’m not really a fan of Robert W. Smith as a lot of his works sound the same. But this is one of my exceptions, I love this piece.
Sounds Like Dark Souls Music... I'm in... Bring It On, Spawn of Hell!
Oh hey, it's the music that RUclips translated comments from Japan refer to.
Tradgedy vs comedy. As far as i understand, in a comedy, nobody dies
please the name of the narrator 😍🥀😍
William Ledbetter
Where can i find this text of narration?
just read the divine comedy lul

better than the official recordings on Alfred
definitly not the players lmao, but the narration makes it wayyyyyyy cooler than alfred.
