We got the chance to play it my senior year of high school. Even had a couple kids learn how to make wine glasses sing. Had the swinging tubes and vocalist as well. We worked on this piece all school year. It was amazing and such a unique experience.

Those tubes the percussionists are swinging around are really hard to keep going for minutes like they do here. We played this my senior year of highschool in my wind ensemble and I got to (had to?) play one of them. I'm not the strongest in upper body strength, but even the other two more muscular guys had trouble keeping it going. These guys seemed to do it rather flawlessly, and kept composure as well. I always find myself coming back to this piece every few months or so. I was a saxophone player in high school marching band, for my senior show a few years back our composer took inspiration from the first movement of Angels in some of our music and incorporated the very recognizable melodies all throughout the show.
listening to this brings me such an unexplainable feeling of happiness, it reminds me of being a dorky high school kid and just having the best times with my friends. we would listen to this exact recording over and over at lunch during band rehearsal and discuss how we could work to make our music better. marching band was one of the best things in my life and I miss it so much. this piece will always have a special place in my heart. thank you, Frank Ticheli.

Yes kind of. 12:48 is in heaven after the battle, and 13:02 is the joyful contentment of the angels, who defeated the demons. ...Or so they think. (1-5 chords in the brass invade the piece at the ending, leaving it open to interpretation, like in a "...or did they?" kind of way

Haha, there's one of those at the very end of Also Sprach Zarathustra, too! "Or did they?" The entire symphony is great. Shame few ever listen beyond where Kubrick stopped. Hopefully one day I can bring forward Ticelli in film the way Kubrick did Richard Strauss.

Probably not literally, but in the story conveyed by the music (and the Cadets in their 2011 show, I guess), quite possibly.

The Allen High School 2014 Marching Band Show is based off of this piece. Should be interesting to see how it turns out.

i love this piece. the only thing that could be better with this particular recording that i can tell right now is the vocals in the beginning. they were way too soft, could barely hear. other than that these are magnificent performers!

Our band played this song but we didn't have the pipe organ. The pipe organ makes the song.

The organ is only doubling the brass parts where it plays (and I have played the organ part).

I think Frank watched ASB's performance [ruclips.net/video/LUZmabW-OVg/видео.html] from December of the prior year and took some cues from Richard Floyd 🙂 The interpretations are very similar. Also, the ASB video has the benefit of much better sonics. It is truly a glorious noise!
