My favorite part about this, besides the stunning music-making, is the joy on the other players' faces when their colleagues are creating something special. This is what music is all about!! Bravo to all!!
I remember I was gonna play this at my last High school concert of the year back in early 2020 but then everything shut down and never got to play it. The last time we played this piece was one my favorite memories of band and it makes me a bit sad when I hear this because it makes me remember what could have been.
I stumbled upon this on Apple Music. I love it. I’m from Detroit. I’m glad to hear MSU playing this. Take your time pastor! (that’s what we say in the black church when the preacher is preaching good 😅)
11/10 for everything. They could've just sat there and played the music, and it still would've been good. They could stand when they did and it would've been better than just sitting, but just the energy of the performers and conductor added so much. fantastic performance
Wow...great performance of a great and uplifting piece Times have really changed since I was in band in the old days...The 80's You have an African American composer capturing elements of the black church and culture AND his pieces seemed to be getting programmed everywhere
The director my my University’s Wind Ensemble told us this will be one of the most important pieces we’ve ever played for band, because a piece like this gets people to want to play band 😂
YES...SAXES, SING it out, y'all!!! THIS is why we are musicians! (I'm playing this for the 1st time this weekend, clarinet, but I'm gonna play the like saxes did!)
I played this for Eastern Senior Districts when I was in 12th grade. It was the BEST Concert Band piece that I have ever played. The Clarinet Soli sounded pretty bad in ours but it was still fun!!
I had a dream tonight with this song in it. Troy U played it last year and it absolutely became my favorite piece. The motions in the beginning honestly get me to tear up every single time. I only there for a year and had to leave because I had swapped majors, I honestly came to love everyone in the band as well. When I hear this it isn't just a good piece of music. It makes me think of home. Of the friends I made in the short time I was there, and the good times we had and memories we made. So yeah. This song really does mean something to me. It'll never get old either.
Great piece and performance but I’m saddened Thomas didn’t give the horns a chance to shine :( he gave some non jazz instruments a chance to stand (oboes!) but jazz horn can be crazy awesome :)
@@TrentDaddy2006 true! Ain’t no instrument can do rips like that the way the French horn does. It’s my favorite brass instrument for that reason. That and Mahler. :-D
Im an alum of Marian Catholic and our band director got this for us to play my senior year 2020, unfortunately covid hit and we never got to play it. I was so devastated.
This music sounds amazing. It really gets you in the mood. You know what's not amazing, though? The score engraving. You can't see the score in this video, but my goodness is it terrible.

I was thinking the same thing!
What he said! ⬆️
Indeed bro!
The 18 dislikes are people who wanted to clap on 1 & 3
Amen!!! 😂
I knew shit was gonna get real when the bassist put down the upright for an electric.
Tenor soloist: plays his part
Alto sax next to him: Praise the LORT! Praise JESUS! Hallelujer!
Funny!!!
The sax to the soloist's right is almost as into it as the soloist, HA! Stellar performance!
Tyler Young! A great player as well.
He’s feeling it!
I saw this live and it was one of the best performances I've ever seen by anyone
agreed
When the lead trumpet switch mouthpieces for the second movement, I felt that.
This man really took us to church with this one . Oh my goodness . 👏🏿👏🏿
😨
I love how the conductor looked as if he was ready to run off that podium and get him a shout!
My thoughts...
If the conductor ain’t about to do the church lady dance himself during Shout...
The band ain’t doing it right.
@@robertperez2262 RIGHT!!
I thought he was going Ric Flair!
I have never sweat while performing like I did during this piece
The sax player to the right of them was really getting into it, I love to see it, it really shows how powerful music is.
8:45 It's time to play FAMILY FEUD!!!!

I hope you get the chance soon!
Ah. The work of Joe Lulloff strikes again. Absolutely phenomenal saxophone section.

Never thought I’d say this during a wind band piece... but I just had a non ironic praise break 🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾
those key changes
I just tossed my Sunday church hat in the air and did the church lady dance
I am not gonna lie I did start hitting that footwork.
Wow...great performance of a great and uplifting piece

Omar Thomas is just _that_ amazing. Hopefully a beacon to inspire generations that follow

I had chills the entire time

that opening sax solo is what butter sounds like.
Just amazing - it doesn't get much better.
This song is what good home cooked soul food taste like in musical form
6:32 for Shout! :) ❤️
Church meets classical!! Bravo
First reaction when I heard this piece live was “man they taking us to church at a band performance”

Got to play the second movement w my Highschool at Midwest in 2019, best experience ever
Wow, absolutely fantastic tenor solo at the beginning. Loved the pacing and variety in the phrasing. Great job!
This is the Sunday music I grew up with YES !!!!

THAT CLARINET SOLI GODDAMNNNNN
Now that's a cool chart! Bravo to everyone!
This was performed at 2020 Florida Allstate concert. And their performance was equally as great as this one.
Yeah, it's kinda a shame that people leave after the Concert Band (9th and 10th) band. This piece was such a banger!
I was in that band 😁
Great piece and performance but I’m saddened Thomas didn’t give the horns a chance to shine :( he gave some non jazz instruments a chance to stand (oboes!) but jazz horn can be crazy awesome :)

This doesn't work unless percussion is making the machine go.
Clarinets, get some lip slurs in there!

This makes me hate the saxophone a little less
The UNT sax soloist NAILED this. This guy got too carried away.
