As someone who has actually competed in this game it definitely has a foundation for serious play, but because of how it breaks the mold of how a traditional fg is designed a lot of people didn't give this a shot. That and the stigma of the character designs and plot didn't help. The game had a scene for awhile after in Japan as well

As someone who is a bit bored that many 2D fighting games are pretty much the same, SNK Heroines felt like a fresh air.

I love that the items arent your standard items but more or less a support action. And its literally a support action because your sidelines character/player controls the support
Technically, none of Kukri's traits in SNK Heroines are brand new, he was always a foul mouthed, perverted jerk, but this game did a really great job of putting those traits on display as much as possible and adding a bit of comedic wackiness to him, which continued in KOF 15. I just absolutely love the dude.

I can’t believe that this game was the last time we see Muimui & Love Heart, the isekai duo. But one thing you missed out on is that Miss X has a classic “Iori in a (cross-)dress” outfit, making that the _only_ playable guy in an all-girl game. But in hindsight, I’d rather see a game like this come out after SamSho ‘19, only if because we have a bigger variety of girls that aren’t just rehashed from KOF14.

My wife loves to play fighting games with me. Her favorite character is Zack from Dead Or Alive, mainly because she likes to surf down slopes on the back of other characters. She would probably love this game. I always find it funny when companies get offended at fan service. Why do they hate it when their rivals do it? Because it works. I'm not just talking about pretty girls either, but violence and nostalgia as well. Yes, a lot of ultra-violent anime from the 1980s are remembered only because of their awesome levels of violence, but watching Ken punch people into chunky salsa in Fist of the North Star will never get old or unsatisfying. If you want me to watch your anime at least once every year for 40 years, maybe you should do the same? Great video. I look forward to these all the time. Keep it up!!!
Didn't work for DoA. Throwing sax and violins at a product to spice it up has always been considered pretty cheap because even if it gives you sales(and even that is pretty 50/50, especially if we're looking at the fighting games that are selling now vs the ones that are dying like DoA or Soul Calibur) it doesn't show that you put any work or integrity into your craft. I don't think it's as much "companies" that scuff at it as it is game directors and developers who actually have to develop their games and design interesting characters that don't rely on just removing more clothes with each installment which only serves them to pander to the section of their player base who's interests in character designs are only skin deep... Or only skin, rather. And before you know it you have no staying power because no one wants to play the tiddy game with all the giggity sweatlads at locals or tournaments. They usually have what casual fighting game players want from a game which is quick cheap thrills, but none of the things more dedicated players want which is iron man punching ryu from streets. Making good character designs is hard, making coomer bait is easy. Doesn't mean good character designs can't be hot, but there's a difference between that and "download this game for free on your phone, my lord" horny mobile game ad. Even sticking to SNK, KoF 15 is already plenty horny but it also has good designs with thought put into them, and sometimes those 2 traits exist in the same characters. A series like Guilty Gear is incredibly Horn-section but its character designs are also peak. Same with violence. Gratuitous violence can be great, even amazing, but without the proper context it falls flat. It's what stands out to us in memories because it's a story's emotional peak that culminates in one gory moment, but it's not the gore that made it special, it was the build-up to it. If Berserk had none of the story and all of the gore it would be nothing more than edgy fan fiction, but because it has the story around it the gore is elevated to the heights of being a part of a crucial part of a masterpiece.

When I was a kid, picked my favorites in fighting game rosters based on what male characters i thought looked cool. Ever since becoming a teen, i started picking my mains based on which female characters i would smash (and if playstyle was fun or something). So suffice to say, it'd be impossible for me to play this game. In all seriousness though, this is a fun idea for a spin off. Especially these days, it's fun to see studios and devs just embrace the cheesecake sometimes.
it was a good idea and I would fight anyone who says otherwise but this game REALLY needed more of the KOF girls...I am sure people REALLY wanted King or Mary instead of the one shot girls that would ultimately not be in the series anymore...like Love Heart, Mui Mui and Zarina...hell one of my major disappointments is Angel was only repped by her clothes...
Oh and forget to mention, I definitely love snk's stance on dlc here, not announcing dlc before launch and not bombarding with so many at once I totally agree with you that its weird when fighters have dlc characters announced before launch, i especially hate when they add dlc too soon after launch and expect me to pay an extra 30 dollars on top of the game that soon.
Glad to find a someone who talks good about SNK Heroines 😄 The gameplay is like a fusion of Smash Bros. and Marvel vs Capcom Once you get used to the fact that you can only KO your opponent with a Super and the simplified controls, you'll find that the game mechanics (the tag system, air dashes, Items, etc) are very well thought out. I have a friend who wasn't a fan of fighting games, then he played this game and now he can do great combos. SNK Heroines is a good way to introduce new players. I have seen japanese players showing how crazy and fun the game can be!

Believe it or not, there were arcade cabinets and tournaments for this game. I owned this game on the Switch and I was surprised to see this game available at arcades at Round1. I actually enjoy the mechanics as there is a decent amount of depth and I wish I could explain it, but it has been awhile since I played it. I think I stopped because the netplay was terrible as this was around the infamously bad netplay that plauged KOF XIV, this game, and at the time, SamSho 2019. What I really enjoy about this game is that it's nice to still have Love Heart and Mui Mui in the roster before they were completely gone from SNK forever, which is sad as Love was one of my favorite characters in XIV. But the coolest thing is that they acknowledged World Heroes by adding Janne in the roster, which was and still is crazy to me that they mentioned World Heroes in 2018! Makes me wish we could get a new title of that franchise now that we got confirmation of a new Art of Fighting!

I wanted this game to be good, but the focus on simplicity went too far and in the wrong direction in my opinion. Dead or alive made it better since there is 1 button for punch, 1 for kick, 1 for blocking, and 1 for grabs; it's easy to do combos without knowing the character and the fan services is great (Before DOA6 tuned it down a little for some reason), and for those who want to master the game there is a counter system that takes a lot of practice to pull off, but it feels amazing when you read your opponent like an open book and just counter everything he throws at you.
Great video! Have been thinking of giving the game a shot for a while now, and i think i kight get it on sale now. Also the game is kinda a sequel/predecessor to the neo geo pocket game SNK gals fighters, as it has similar light hearted tone, items, and debut of miss x (who im shocked you didnt mention is just iori) I really wish this game had a few more characters, namely king, blue mary, and ángel The mechanica of the game are certainly interesting, specials using meter is cool as that was an art of fighting staple A snk tag fighter with airdashes is super cool But supers being the only way to win is odd, gives me playstation all stars vibes. I actually do hope this game gets a sequel sometime down the road, with more characters and maybe more inspiration from gals fighters in terms of stages and having the controls be a bit more standard but maybe still having a "modern controls" type of thing

I don't have a problem with a cutesy fighting game with only female characters I have played games like the Arcana Heart series (I highly recommend them) and Rumble Roses so I didn't have a problem with the costumes in SNK Heroines Many of the costumes for the female characters in Street Fighter 5 show a lot of skin, even more than SNK Heroines I don't mind japanese culture I am tired of Westerners wanting to Americanize Japanese games by censorship or making many changes. Not sure if you care but when capturing CPS2 footage or emulating it, it displays as much wider than it would actually be if you were on an arcade cab. Even though the Devs made the game this wide, it was intended to be shrunk horizontally to fit 4:3 arcade monitors. I believe the extra width was to add more detail before shrinking the image? But I'm not an expert Anyways, just an editing heads up, I dont think most people would notice. Love your content

That 1 time SNK thought yeah let's have most of our female characters be in a fighting game where it's only them, Terry gets a female version of himself and the final boss is a pervert. Yeah I only remember that my friend played this game a very short amount of time and then never look back at it ever again. This was weird.
The RNG items arent too bad, you can make good use of all of them. plus the SP item is guaranteed when you get to a certain health state. It even overwrites whatever item you were currently using.
@zachstarattack7320 Have you played the game at all? It doesnt feel as bad as items in a party fighter. In fact, the items in SNKH are far more of a support action, an assist move. There's ways to counter everything. The items arent just random things in the game.

It's funny how SNK Heroines here both serves as an ecchi fanservice fighter and a casual/young audience appealing fighter through it's simpler controls and chaotic items... final boss difficulty aside. SNK couldn't resist making the final boss a pain in the butt. 0:57 - Usually only one, maybe two though. It seems the "girl fighter" was a category to fill and didn't usually overlap with the other categories (though a fair few in fighters and non-fighters filled the role of the easier to pick up and play function). 1:33 - I adore blushing faces so the character artwork of this game was an absolute joy for me. The reactions the girls have to their costumes is adorable... though odd for Athena, given she is already an idol. 3:22 - Indeed; there are no low attacks. It was one of the things gotten rid of to make the game easier to pick up and play; I remember the developer interview discussing it's absence. I prefer defend being a button so that was also an appreciated change. 6:50 - I'm more surprised that the game also released on PS4 and PC. I keep thinking it's a Switch exclusive. Understandable that the developers wanted to focus on a smaller project first but it's funny that said project continues to be another fighting game. 7:38 - It's a different mind-set to be sure. Just because the attires are skimpy and the character's attractive, does that instantly make it sexy? I think attire like Mai's cow bikini or Leona's bikini with cat ears are definitely going a sexy route (if they wanted cute, wouldn't animal themed hoodies or a cat maid make more sense respectively) but a lot of the others I can see being more cute. To me, the reactions the character's have to their attire is cute (or in Leona's case, her lack of reaction). Personality and energy shines which is delightful. 9:13 - The genderswap Terry was a nice attention grabber when announced and plays into the lighthearted direction of the game. 9:55 - Likewise; I feel fighting games in particular have become way too comfortable with DLC. Fans of the genre as well. They begin speculating on DLC fighters sometimes when a game is announced. 10:41 - Come to think of it, I don't think I ever clicked on the online before. I only really got the Switch's online in the last 2-3 years, and it's been a while since I played this year one Switch game. 14:44 - That doesn't necessarily mean other game developers. Could be companies wanting to make merchandise like figures and manga, etc.

When I was a kid, picked my favorites in fighting game rosters based on what male characters i thought looked cool. Ever since becoming a teen, i started picking my mains based on which female characters i would smash (and if playstyle was fun or something). So suffice to say, it'd be impossible for me to play this game.
In all seriousness though, this is a fun idea for a spin off. Especially these days, it's fun to see studios and devs just embrace the cheesecake sometimes.
I am mostly offended at the existence of this game because it assumes the position that Leona wasn't hot enough already when she is literally peak.

Heroines, in my opinion, is a more robust version of SNK Gal Fighters. Here's hoping for a Heroines 2 with some of the gal fighters being added.

it was a good idea and I would fight anyone who says otherwise but this game REALLY needed more of the KOF girls...I am sure people REALLY wanted King or Mary instead of the one shot girls that would ultimately not be in the series anymore...like Love Heart, Mui Mui and Zarina...hell one of my major disappointments is Angel was only repped by her clothes...
Oh and forget to mention, I definitely love snk's stance on dlc here, not announcing dlc before launch and not bombarding with so many at once
I totally agree with you that its weird when fighters have dlc characters announced before launch, i especially hate when they add dlc too soon after launch and expect me to pay an extra 30 dollars on top of the game that soon.

The gameplay is like a fusion of Smash Bros. and Marvel vs Capcom
Once you get used to the fact that you can only KO your opponent with a Super and the simplified controls, you'll find that the game mechanics (the tag system, air dashes, Items, etc) are very well thought out.
I have a friend who wasn't a fan of fighting games, then he played this game and now he can do great combos.
SNK Heroines is a good way to introduce new players.

Believe it or not, there were arcade cabinets and tournaments for this game. I owned this game on the Switch and I was surprised to see this game available at arcades at Round1. I actually enjoy the mechanics as there is a decent amount of depth and I wish I could explain it, but it has been awhile since I played it. I think I stopped because the netplay was terrible as this was around the infamously bad netplay that plauged KOF XIV, this game, and at the time, SamSho 2019.
What I really enjoy about this game is that it's nice to still have Love Heart and Mui Mui in the roster before they were completely gone from SNK forever, which is sad as Love was one of my favorite characters in XIV. But the coolest thing is that they acknowledged World Heroes by adding Janne in the roster, which was and still is crazy to me that they mentioned World Heroes in 2018! Makes me wish we could get a new title of that franchise now that we got confirmation of a new Art of Fighting!

The game would have benefitted from the rise of Vtuber companies.
I wanted this game to be good, but the focus on simplicity went too far and in the wrong direction in my opinion. Dead or alive made it better since there is 1 button for punch, 1 for kick, 1 for blocking, and 1 for grabs; it's easy to do combos without knowing the character and the fan services is great (Before DOA6 tuned it down a little for some reason), and for those who want to master the game there is a counter system that takes a lot of practice to pull off, but it feels amazing when you read your opponent like an open book and just counter everything he throws at you.

Not sure if you care but when capturing CPS2 footage or emulating it, it displays as much wider than it would actually be if you were on an arcade cab. Even though the Devs made the game this wide, it was intended to be shrunk horizontally to fit 4:3 arcade monitors. I believe the extra width was to add more detail before shrinking the image? But I'm not an expert

The RNG items arent too bad, you can make good use of all of them. plus the SP item is guaranteed when you get to a certain health state. It even overwrites whatever item you were currently using.

Have you played the game at all? It doesnt feel as bad as items in a party fighter. In fact, the items in SNKH are far more of a support action, an assist move.
There's ways to counter everything. The items arent just random things in the game.

It's funny how SNK Heroines here both serves as an ecchi fanservice fighter and a casual/young audience appealing fighter through it's simpler controls and chaotic items... final boss difficulty aside. SNK couldn't resist making the final boss a pain in the butt.
0:57 - Usually only one, maybe two though. It seems the "girl fighter" was a category to fill and didn't usually overlap with the other categories (though a fair few in fighters and non-fighters filled the role of the easier to pick up and play function).
1:33 - I adore blushing faces so the character artwork of this game was an absolute joy for me. The reactions the girls have to their costumes is adorable... though odd for Athena, given she is already an idol.
3:22 - Indeed; there are no low attacks. It was one of the things gotten rid of to make the game easier to pick up and play; I remember the developer interview discussing it's absence. I prefer defend being a button so that was also an appreciated change.
6:50 - I'm more surprised that the game also released on PS4 and PC. I keep thinking it's a Switch exclusive. Understandable that the developers wanted to focus on a smaller project first but it's funny that said project continues to be another fighting game.
7:38 - It's a different mind-set to be sure. Just because the attires are skimpy and the character's attractive, does that instantly make it sexy? I think attire like Mai's cow bikini or Leona's bikini with cat ears are definitely going a sexy route (if they wanted cute, wouldn't animal themed hoodies or a cat maid make more sense respectively) but a lot of the others I can see being more cute. To me, the reactions the character's have to their attire is cute (or in Leona's case, her lack of reaction). Personality and energy shines which is delightful.
9:13 - The genderswap Terry was a nice attention grabber when announced and plays into the lighthearted direction of the game.
9:55 - Likewise; I feel fighting games in particular have become way too comfortable with DLC. Fans of the genre as well. They begin speculating on DLC fighters sometimes when a game is announced.
10:41 - Come to think of it, I don't think I ever clicked on the online before. I only really got the Switch's online in the last 2-3 years, and it's been a while since I played this year one Switch game.
