- (Update from Maximum: 1/19/21) Recently, the Red Ball community has learned that UltraAug, who makes an appearance in this documentary due to his discovery of spike glitch and top route 7, tragically passed away in the summer of 2018. This came as a shock to us all. This video is now dedicated to him to honor his legacy.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
In 2008, a concrete mixer salesman from Russia began development on Red Ball, a simplistic flash game featuring a red ball and 12 unique levels. Released in 2009, the game became an instant hit, being played by millions around the world every year. This one game ultimately spawned a franchise that would come to pull in hundreds of millions of players and RUclips viewers through the mobile release of Red Ball 4. In as early as 2010, speedrunners sought to complete the original Red Ball as fast as possible, drawn to the game's addictive sandbox-style physics and intriguing level design. The history of world records and community actions in the eleven years that followed Red Ball's release have produced an absolutely amazing, inspirational tale that this video will aim to display.

He was a well known member of the community that has made new strats that have allowed people to get world record and new times. He will be remembered.
I came into the game well after him, but I knew about him from his discovery of spike glitch. I hope the best for his family, even 2.5 years later.
That's stupid how everything can be taken away from you so quickly. One day you are, the other you aren't.

Just need to clear something up here:
I was not active in the community when the "YOLO balls" strategy was named. I hope my pronunciation of it accurately conveyed my loathing of that strat name. Thank you.
I believe the delivery of the line was adaquate
I didn't know you were an early record holder in this game (not that I even knew it existed to begin with).
That name makes it seem lik everyone playing are 12 years old, major cringe shit.
@@MuscarV2 so mad over nothing
@@kylegregory2876 someone doesn't have to be angry to swear.
Nothing suggested they were angry, they literally just expressed a strong dislike.
Edit: I'd like to note that literally all I was doing was pointing out that Marcus was not necessarily angry, I am not defending the blatant failure of psychoanalysis of an entire group of speed runners they committed.
Wow, I can't believe that Jezs guy faked his world record like that. It's a good thing we had someone like Jezs to set the record straight. Still, it's a shame Jezs managed to hide it for so long until Jezs called him out on it. We need more people like Jezs, to protect us against people like Jezs.
Jokes aside, I never heard of this game before, but I ended up watching the whole video. Very entertaining.
Somehow Jezs managed to be BOTH the outlaw AND the ranger in this tale!

UltraAug was one of my best friends back in high school. It absolutely made my day to see him mentioned in this video as I had no idea that he was such an active member of the red ball speedrun community. Thank you for that :)
This was a wonder for me to see after all these years. I can remember him telling me about red ball in our discord calls sometimes :')
Is there any chance that you can add me on discord to share more details about this?

I never thought a record progression of a flash game about a red little ball would be so interesting. Fantastic job on this video!
@Jayden London there is, u could use your own standalone flash player and the swf of game which is on speedrun.com
ANY world record progression video of any game is interesting, and for some reason flash games are even more interesting than everything else

WAIT WHAT?
So glad that Jezs came out clean.
And prove much later that he actually can do it without spacing.
Yeah, that's how splicing works. It doesn't denote a players skill, but rather their patience. Jezs clearly had the skill to pull it off, just not the patience to do it all in one go.
Jezs is the perfect example of not only guilt being a deadly weapon. But also someone who fell way downhill but than climbed back up. It's pretty damn inspiring.
The narrator switches remind me of a school project presentation lmfao

This game was my childhood. Even tho I’m still a teenager, I was literally raised by this game. The nostalgia is immeasurable.
Wow, this is quite a high quality documentation of the speedrunning history, with a lot of intrigue, drama, and complicated gameplay. This video deserves hundreds of thousands of views.
its over 600k now and will I'm guessing go over 1M in time.
Popping champagne over red ball is on another level man, this was a trip
I never thought I would feel so betrayed by someone cheating on a flash game about a ball.
Incredible video, wasn't expecting to enjoy this so much. Love eg's hype crew
Me after seeing who made this vid: WAIT ITS THAT GUY

I got to the part where Rareeg came back to claim WR and was like “aight, that was a good vid and a cool way to end it” and was about to close tab when i saw i was halfway through the video. Then i saw who uploaded it! Rollercoaster of emotions
When it showed "ItsMaximum" had started running the game, I stopped and thought "I heard that name before... Maybe they commented?" not realising you made the video lol
I cannot understate this:
This might be the best video to ever exist. I used to play Red Ball as a kid. I thought as a joke recently: what if there was a summoning salt style video on red ball
I turned this on as a joke to watch for 3 minutes, and here I am after watching the full hour. This video was very well made and was very interesting to watch. Who knows, maybe I'll even attempt to play it 0.0
Please save me i watched it 7 times already
This was like an actual movie, thank you for providing us with this content!
Imagine creating a world record progresion video so good that it's partly responsible for making itself outdated.

Red Ball: I must go, my people need me
Not sure what this is about, but I am not complaining and will definitely be tuning in at 1:00 PM tomorrow. 😎

glad you liked it!
Really well made, loved every second of it. Especially the overview graph every few minutes, all speedrun progression documentarys should have that
Glad you liked the graph! I think it is a great visual tool.
Did you really just make me watch a full hour video of speedrunning a 12 year old flash game of a red circle?
Yes, yes you did. and I loved the whole thing. Epic.
Commenting to help the most important speedrunning documentary on this site
This is the pinnacle of internet culture
I came into this video saying "fuck it why not", I ended up deeply engrossed into this roller-coaster of a story.
I am so glad that this video is as long as it is. I have seen a lot of world record progression videos before, but I feel like this one has a full 20 minute long speedrun progression video for each phase of a categories lifetime.
Man I remember sitting in high school playing this game nonstop thinking I was a speedrunner back in 2010
"but what is angular velocity?"

I keep coming back to this video, something about your content is so entertaining and no matter how many times I watch your videos they still never bore me.
pretty cool story, it seems the community for this game was pretty cool, that clip from the discord call when the guy got the record was really nice and i like how several of you took part in narrating/producting this.
What a great video I clicked it out of curiosity and stayed for the whole video. I got so invested in this history I was so hype and jumped when WR 3:19 was achieved. Great editing and so interesting to see how this game and community developed.
I already watched that same vídeo 7 times and every time it reaches jesz fake speedrun, eg first ever submited speedrun i always genuinely smile lol
I love how RUclips decided to make Redball super popular through this single video.
Most of the people who saw this video have probably played Redball 4 in Coolmath.

Also, for any new runners out there, I highly recommend playing the fifth game in the series, Red Ball 5. It's a little underrated because it's not an official game in the series, but it's a very neat game nonetheless. Please play it, I am begging you.

Me, realizing i just watched the history of Red Ball speedrunning for an hour.
I've never seen better music in a speedrunning documentary.
Well this was the last thing I expected to appear in my recommendations today, but I thoroughly enjoyed it. Great video.
Who would imagine that im addicted to videos of speedruns of a game that i loved as a child
The rare gang is comedy. Had me geeked when the whole squad pulled up after the tournament win
I feel like I'm going to cross paths with red ball speedruns when I ask Alexa what happened this day in the past
R.I.P. UltraAug, you will be remembered
I like how the chapters refer to the music. It is very helpful, and should be done by more RUclipsrs. Also, as a Mario fan, I was happily surprised with all the Mario music.
Holy shit nearly went through the whole video without realizing YOU were maximum
You weren't a kid if you didn't play this during IT class.
I love the car level segment a lot, both because it seems funny, and because you also use coconut mall, which is my favourite track from Mario kart Wii (both as racing track and sound track)
Crazy how the WR is almost 30 seconds faster than the WR here, time flies so fast
it's also faster than 2:45, the fastest segmented run when this was uploaded which is even crazier
Yep, this is going in the save to watch later list
The amount of times I've finished red ball as a teen is embarrassingly high
Easily one of the best flash speedrunning videos ever

Used to play this game in middle school, I have very fond memories of discovering most of the speedrun strats with my friends when we would race eachother
Having Jezs not only describe his own villain story, but also be a co-narrator for the parts involving your own records, was an inspired choice. It's nice to see that some speedrunning communities have redemption stories. Cheating almost always results in excommunication forever.
This is epic! Incredible that you're able to talk about the speedrunning history of a simple flash game for an hour
