As I discover more of his pieces, Dohnanyi is quickly becoming one of my favorite composers

I just played a virtual concert of his String Trio Serenade yesterday haha. Lovely piece. I do wish he were more known.

The grand hymn tune at 41:05 has been used in church, but I don't recall the name. Did Rachmaninoff know this work before composing his own 2nd Piano concerto? This work dates back to about age 21 and composition probably started when Dohnanyi was a teenager. Amazing. (So is also the Mahler-sized Symphony #1 which ends with a huge fugue.)

@@AdrianRajter I think so. Another work to study if d'Albert's Piano Concerto #1, patterned after Liszt's B Minor sonata, with a fugal cadenza and majestic coda added -- filled with familiar themes stolen by Hollywood for movie scores --- but no one ever plays it, also a teen composition, finished at around age 20.

@@jboushkaThat was a great piece. I totally agree with von Bulow's appreciation to it when he placed it alongside Bronsart's as the most worthy Liszt school piano concertos. However my problem to it was that the recapitulation-like section is too long and repeats the whole exposition-like first section that was long enough, and only the key was changed. These two sections takes two thirds of the whole length, and the recap feels like a filler. d'Albert should at least change the orchestration in recap and shorten some passages, if he could't come up with some other interesting development. At least it would have been a bit more compact.

Orchestra and conductor: who? The credits, please. Is the pianist the proper Dohnányi?

It's Howard Shelley with the BBC Philarmonic conducted by Matthias Bamert, as you can see in description.
