  • How I grow Carrots in boxes of Sand.
Hi, I'm Dan and I grow a huge variety of vegetables for eating and also some Giant and Exhibition Show varieties for Local and even National Competitions.
Throughout the year I will try to show how I go about growing my produce and hopefully give a few tips and tricks along the way.
Whether it be how I grow potatoes in containers, growing basic veg for the home to growing a 10 pound onion or even a 100 pound marrow I will chart all my progress.
Please have a look at my videos and subscribe to my Channel.
    Thanks.

    GREAT looking carrots!
Without much trouble you could turn your corer into a "Clam gun" that holds your core in place! Just cap off the top, drill a 3/4" hole in the side of the pipe (at about where you grab the side), and you're done! Now, when you push the corer IN, leave the side hole open but when you pull the core OUT, put your hand across the side hole to seal it. You've created a vacuum within the corer that should hold the sand in place. Just move your hand away from the hole when you're ready to release the core and it should fall out!
We use these on sandy beaches to harvest the 'Diggers' (razor clams, quahogs, etc).

Never having grown carrots, this video is a great aid to a beginner like me. This way I can do it correctly from the beginning. So happy to have found your video. I have several pallets that I can use to make these boxes and then I’ll need to locate the proper type sand. I have pipe to make the corer, and make my own compost. I see someone else mentioned growing parsnips in this way and I’ll have a box for those too. One more weekend before we’re out of frost danger here. Plenty of time to get these built and filled. Thanks!

Tried this last month with a 1 foot deep plywood box ; but sowed them over a 1/3 sieved mole hill dirt - 1/3 sieved compost - 1/3 river sand mix. Added just a thin sieved compost layer on top before sowing a HF1 free batch, useless for seed propagation . Germination went very well ; but am quite not sure now, it will work after having watched the way you do. Not sure it will be soft enough for a straight cropping... Anyways, have a bigger wooden frame still waiting for another try :) Thanks for sharing Dan !

I had a magic carrot bed once. I think it was where the old kids' sand box was or where they would empty the old sand when they changed it out occasionally.
When the kids got too old to play in it, they added compost & made it a garden since the grass/weeds were long dead.
Viola! Magic carrot bed for next buyer. Me,...who just thought I was a genius gardener😂😂😂.

    • @Allotment-diaryUk
      @Allotment-diaryUk  2 года назад +6

The only problem I can see is the parsnip foliage shading the carrots as they do grow a load of leaves and might keep the sun off .
But If you plant the parsnips on the North facing side it wouldn't affect them as much.

I have peat moss, potting soil, chicken manure, Blood & bone meals and Mikro-Myco.
I need help with the portion ratios?
I was thinking 70:30 and combining the potting soil, chicken manure, Blood & bone meals together for 30% of the mix, 70% peat moss and just sprinkle the Mikro-Myco in their roots.

I don't because luckily it's so windy where I am I don't seem to suffer from them.
But I do occasionally but only late on in the season so If I spot it I'll harvest the lot.
      Cheers,Dan

Apparently, carrot fly can only reach 20” in flying height, so tall box’s or plastic dust bins are great.

It is a problem for a lot of people I know.
If you build a micro mesh barrier around a box it should keep them out but it is a bit of a faff just to grow a few carrots .
      Good luck.
      Cheers,Dan 👍

Grow a strong Herb nearby, the Scent will confuse the Carrot Fly from smelling your Carrots. Try Rosemary, Lavender, Sage etc. (Even as Cuttings in small Pots, growing them on, to move to another area later.) Or try growing a sprouty Onion, or Garlic in your Veg from the Supermarket. The green shoots give off a pungent whiff, to confuse those carrot flies. Gardeners often do "Companion Planting", to aid, or rid Vegetables of issues.

Washed concretes sand?. Do you mean, washed river sand! Or horticultural sand? Concreter’s sand is never used in the horticulture industry. I have been a horticulturalist in the nursery for 30 years I have never heard of washed Concreteing sand being used. It’s to fine and it cakes and compacts very quickly and easily, hence the use in concrete.
