- How I grow Carrots in boxes of Sand.
Hi, I'm Dan and I grow a huge variety of vegetables for eating and also some Giant and Exhibition Show varieties for Local and even National Competitions.
Throughout the year I will try to show how I go about growing my produce and hopefully give a few tips and tricks along the way.
Whether it be how I grow potatoes in containers, growing basic veg for the home to growing a 10 pound onion or even a 100 pound marrow I will chart all my progress.
Please have a look at my videos and subscribe to my Channel.
Thanks.

GREAT looking carrots!
Without much trouble you could turn your corer into a "Clam gun" that holds your core in place! Just cap off the top, drill a 3/4" hole in the side of the pipe (at about where you grab the side), and you're done! Now, when you push the corer IN, leave the side hole open but when you pull the core OUT, put your hand across the side hole to seal it. You've created a vacuum within the corer that should hold the sand in place. Just move your hand away from the hole when you're ready to release the core and it should fall out!
We use these on sandy beaches to harvest the 'Diggers' (razor clams, quahogs, etc).
*Thank you for this wonderful sharing, my friend ALLOTMENT DIARY, we learn more with you, don't stop gardening, we support you, happy gardeniiiiiiiiiiiiiiiing!!!*
Thanks for that.
It means a lot.
Cheers,Dan 👍
WOW!! Those are amazing. Thanks for sharing the results in the video.
Never having grown carrots, this video is a great aid to a beginner like me. This way I can do it correctly from the beginning. So happy to have found your video. I have several pallets that I can use to make these boxes and then I’ll need to locate the proper type sand. I have pipe to make the corer, and make my own compost. I see someone else mentioned growing parsnips in this way and I’ll have a box for those too. One more weekend before we’re out of frost danger here. Plenty of time to get these built and filled. Thanks!
Great video, Dan. With videos like this, you should be hitting 100K soon! I think I found you and your potato videos around 25K.
Wow. Beautiful carrots! I had never seen carrots planted like this. I've watched many tutorials on growing them in containers, but not in sand with a hole of compost. Very interesting.
Cracking Video Dan, thanks for the tips and sharing mate hope you have a great season, Alan
Good lord I could make a stew with just one of those carrots! haha! WOW! I'm going to have to try it this way. Thanks for posting!
*WONDERFUL HARVEST!!!*
Absolutely beautiful, I must subscribe! Thank you now I can try to grow carrots like that!
Absolutely lovely. Well done
Those carrots are frickin gorgeous! I'm a first-time grower, and I'm starting with spuds, carrots, garlic, and strawberries, but my garden is all concrete, unfortunately from the previous owner. I'm growing in the grow sacks, so I won't be able to get beauties like yours, but we all gotta start somewhere 😅 Thanks for all your tips
Thanks for sharing, that's a very beautiful thing to see.
I like those boxes. Thanks for sharing, some great tips for a great harvest.
Cheers.Dan 👍
Your carrots are the biggest, straightest I have ever seen. Looks like I have to try something new, thanks.
Those are some gorgeous carrots!
NO. 1 Carrots what a great Harvest good job !
Bravo, Dan. A brilliant how-to video. You actually make it look er.. easy-ish.
I admit it is quite hard work but I still get a weird thrill pulling a big carrot out.🤣
Cheers,Dan 👍
Amazing video!! Thank you so much for sharing!! 🤗🦋🇺🇸
Thank you for tagging on last year's result, at the end of the video. N
👍
Impressive ... 🏆
Are you kidding me! I have been watching carrot planting videos since January. I planted some mid March in Connecticut. The temperature was 24 degrees two days ago. The gallon of water in my shed was frozen solid. I’ll be starting over this weekend. These are amazing. Thank you for sharing.
Im in CT also. I was going to plant carrots in mid March but held off. I planted spinach, kale, and onions recently. Im hoping it wasnt too early.
Will definitely be doing this!
Gotta be done even in smaller pots.
Carrots stay sound for months.
Cheers,Dan 👍
Great grower and top man - cheers Dan xxx
Awesome job
Great carrots Dan, top of the class young man
Beautiful carrots!
wow! Beautiful, wayda go
I've got to try this! Thanks!
Hive it a go.
Even if it's in smaller containers it still works very well.
Cheers,Dan 👍
Good job man
Tried this last month with a 1 foot deep plywood box ; but sowed them over a 1/3 sieved mole hill dirt - 1/3 sieved compost - 1/3 river sand mix. Added just a thin sieved compost layer on top before sowing a HF1 free batch, useless for seed propagation . Germination went very well ; but am quite not sure now, it will work after having watched the way you do. Not sure it will be soft enough for a straight cropping... Anyways, have a bigger wooden frame still waiting for another try :) Thanks for sharing Dan !
Good idea,I've always had a hard time of it with carrots
I ad terrible soil when I first started out sand works great!I planted strawberries in sand.and natural wood chips.
I need to get my carrot boxes sorted this year I ended up growing in 30 litre containers last year as mine had rotted. Great video Dan
Get em sorted Tony.
I'll use half blue barrels when my wooden ones finally rot me thinks.
Cheers,Dan 👍
@@Allotment-diaryUk Im getting the materials Ive been using barrels myself until now but need it to look pretty now for the books and courses
Yeah barrels would look pretty 💩
@@Allotment-diaryUk Gonna make it from timber and galvanised sheets make an 18ft long one so I can net it too protect from the fly
Colheita bonita!
great looking carrots
Cheers.Dan 👍
So beautiful presentation thank you my friend
Cheers.Dan 👍
Holy mother. That’s the biggest carrot 🥕 I’ve ever seen!
They are a good size to eat.
I once grew one that weighed 7 pounds 😁
Cheers,Dan 👍
Really nice looking carrots. I am going to grow mine like this. God bless you and your family ❤️🙏🤗🐕🐾
Definitely want to try this myself. I'm stateside and wondering what exactly to buy to fill the box? When I say sharpnsand and grit....peoples heads explode 🤯
@@edna4parham I am going to put 2 parts sand to 1 part compost and put it through a screen so it is a fine soil. I will also add some worm castings and a little bit of perlite.
I love those big old carrots he had. 😊🤗❤️🙏
@@edna4parham hee hee. Try Lowe's or Home Depot, ask for builder's sand or coarse sand. Paving and playground sand, the other types you can readily find, are too fine of a grit. If you need a lot for something like this check to see if there is a "stone & sand" supply place. They will sell by the cubic yard and are often much cheaper. They will deliver $$$ or take a pickup.
I had a magic carrot bed once. I think it was where the old kids' sand box was or where they would empty the old sand when they changed it out occasionally.
When the kids got too old to play in it, they added compost & made it a garden since the grass/weeds were long dead.
Viola! Magic carrot bed for next buyer. Me,...who just thought I was a genius gardener😂😂😂.
You Tube was boring without you!
That's a bold statement but I'll take it.🤪
Thanks a lot .
Cheers,Dan 👍
Great video! The carrots look amazing.
Such a great video! What carrots are you growing? They look huge. Thanks
-- I just saw below its Sweet Candle. I just found you today and I plan to spend my Sunday watching your older vids and making notes.
Nice video again Dan. I’m going to try it in a large plastic water barrel, we’ll, half a barrel. Take care, Eamonn.
Give it a go.
It's a pretty fail safe method.
Cheers,Dan 👍
Pinball Preparedness and Tennessee talked about your method and so I was able to find you and subscribe
Great.
Thanks.
Cheers Dan.
Thanks for the tip! Compost is sky-high now. Now if I can only figure out how to recreate your drainpipe corer... I'm not very handy.
Easy really.
Just get an off cut of a drain pipe.
No need to put the bar through the top.
Or you can use a sturdy pole and plunge it into the sand and rotate it to make a cone shaped core.
Works as well.
Cheers,Dan 😁
They are some good lookin carrots. Just need some boiling water, and some butter. I love fresh carrots, can't touch canned anymore!
Beautiful carrots! What variety did you grow?
Hi Dan, you inspired me last year growing your carrots in sand boxes so I decided to build one myself. It’s 6ft x 2ft. Is it possible to grow parsnips in half of it as well as carrots or can you see problems if I do. Enjoy your videos greatly, take care.
The only problem I can see is the parsnip foliage shading the carrots as they do grow a load of leaves and might keep the sun off .
But If you plant the parsnips on the North facing side it wouldn't affect them as much.
Cheers,Dan 👍
Dan, what are the rings you are using? They look similar to biscuit cutters.
"Oh that's a small one" pulls out a foot long carrot haha!
Hi Dan
enjoyed this video as I'm going to attempt to grow carrots in a box made from 3 pallets collars lined with black plastic . my question is I'm unsure how much sharp sand I will need to fill it ? is it ok to mix sand and soil / compost before coring the holes if I don't have enough or is it better to have just sand ? Jen
I would love to be spoiled for choice with specimens that good....Nice one Dan 👍
🌻🌻Nigel.............MuddyBootz Allotment🌻🌻
Come on Nigel if anyone could grow show stoppers it would be you.😉
Cheers,Dan 👍
New sub 👍🤗
''they are getting worse!'' dude you should see mine XD they were thumb size!!! 5 months growing!
Excellent 👍
How much is the depth of this planter?
What kind of wood do you use? Do you use any sort of weather sealer on it? Is it pressure treated wood? Thanks.
Dan when watering do you water the hole box or just the compost stations ?????
Hi, greetings from Croatia. I want to try this too. What kind of seeds did you use?
Hi Dan , loving your videos from down here in NZ mate ! Is there any chance you can give me the dimensions for your boxes? I'd like to follow your lead and try this .
Thanks for the awesome Dan cheers !
Approx 2ft x 2ft
Hi ther thanks for the video with regards to the compost you use what is it called and can I bye it online also the name of the carrots you grew what was ther name many thanks
I have raised beds which I plan on growing my carrots in, so could I create holes like you have done here to then fill with a finer compost than what’s already in there?
Great question.
I've grown carrots in sand in the 30l buckets and they grew well.
I grew some last year in 50 litre buckets and to be honest they were bigger than the ones in the boxes.
Cheers,Dan 👍
@@Allotment-diaryUk do you still do the same thing with the holes and compost in containers
@@headrushuk Yep exactly the same.
Great video Dan.. Does the variety of carrots dictate how long it will grow in that medium.. ie will a chantenay grow as big as an autumn king?
Not too sure but the variety I grow is Sweet Candle and you can take them from about August all the way through until the following March without them coming to any harm.
Don't think that a smaller variety would grow ad big as Autumn king which ate a big carrot but they may do.
Cheers,Dan 👍
How deep are you planting them into the soil? And are the rings u use from plastic tubes cut down?
Those carrots are HUGE! Is it the variety of carrot that makes them that big or because you’re growing them in pure compost?
ok I see what i did wrong with my carrots, your look great.!!
Are they edible though? My old hen mother was saying they can be tough. Is this for the size or the edibility
Good evening my friend, I see that you have done a very good job, could you tell me what quality soil you have used?😍
Hi Dan.I'm Hans from Germany and I try to plant big Carrots like you but here I found only Carrots with a long till 25 cm.Please can you tell me which sort you are planting ?? Thanks in advance,Hans.
What is your ratio mix of compost and sand? Thanks
Do you mix compost and sand together
Do you silver plate them carrots or eat them! lol Really neat, thank You! USA
Well done 👏.....I'd love to know what's the name of those carrot seed please.
👍👍👍
Hello, how many parts sand to compost please?
Is that 55mm down pipe or the 68mm?
Hey! very comfortable buckets with 2 handles. how many liters are they? Hello from Russia!
Hi they are 30 litres
Cheers,Dan
Great carrots. But seems like an expensive process for 14 carrots…. Is it just the compost wholes you replenish every season?
I'm wondering..... When you water the carrots, are you watering the compost holes only or together with the sand as well?
Hello Dan and Bravo ! Fantastic ! Quelles sont les mesure de votre bac ? Je vais tenter l'expérience moi aussi. Merci
la taille est de 60 cm x 60 cm x 60 cm. Merci 👍
@@Allotment-diaryUk Bonjour, merci pour ta réponse et ton partage toujours inspirant.
Am I missing where you fertilized the carrots before planting and during growing?
Look up Homegrown Veg. He gets 2-3 dozen per greenhouse pot.
Jim is a lovely gent, I like his quick germination method
I am interested in the carrot rings. I couldn’t see the whole thing.
What variety is that ? Or can any carrot grow that big in sand?
Do u have carrots seed on sale
mate, this are coffeetablebook carrots, nearly a pain to eat!
✌
What is the name of the carrots 🥕 you use 👍
Will you be growing giant carrots. Not like the ones shown in video. I guess heaviest carrots. I think you did some s few years ago.
Have never had luck growing carrots in pots. Would love to try this method. Sharp sand should be easy to find but I'm having trouble finding a decent fine compost in the u.s. Anyone have an eye on any brands that might be available in the u.s?
Any compost will do.
If it's really coarse just sieve it to get the big lumps out.
Otherwise it should be fine.
Cheers,Dan 👍
Is there a different name for sharp sand? 🤔 I want to do this, but running into a few problems with materials.
@@edna4parham Sharp sand is just coarse sand. And he uses a washed version.
@Love Music will river sand do?
Any sand that has been washed. You don't want any fine grain Beach Sand because the Salt will kill any growing plant. Simples. 😎
Do I understand that you are growing these for visual competition and not market? It would seem that their diameter is so large that they would get a bit woody in the core and not be optimal for eating raw. They are beautiful though. I garden in the Midwest USA where our clay soil makes it difficult to get a straight carrot even in well amended soil.
could you possibly tell me the approx dimensions of the carrot box? DxWxH please
These are 2ft square and 18" to 2ft tall.
Cheers,Dan
@@Allotment-diaryUk thank you :)
Why are you moving the sand from one box to the other?
I have a question… I’m transplanting over 100 white oak tree seedlings from cone shoots going in to 2 quart pots.
I have peat moss, potting soil, chicken manure, Blood & bone meals and Mikro-Myco.
I need help with the portion ratios?
I was thinking 70:30 and combining the potting soil, chicken manure, Blood & bone meals together for 30% of the mix, 70% peat moss and just sprinkle the Mikro-Myco in their roots.
Why do they need to be matching pairs??.Can you not eat any or all of them?.
Hello Dan,
do you veggie mesh your carrots? The carrot root fly wiped me out last year.
I don't because luckily it's so windy where I am I don't seem to suffer from them.
But I do occasionally but only late on in the season so If I spot it I'll harvest the lot.
Cheers,Dan
@@Allotment-diaryUk Thanks Dan
Apparently, carrot fly can only reach 20” in flying height, so tall box’s or plastic dust bins are great.
What sort of?
Mine all got the dreaded fly last year 😪
It is a problem for a lot of people I know.
If you build a micro mesh barrier around a box it should keep them out but it is a bit of a faff just to grow a few carrots .
Good luck.
Cheers,Dan 👍
Grow a strong Herb nearby, the Scent will confuse the Carrot Fly from smelling your Carrots. Try Rosemary, Lavender, Sage etc. (Even as Cuttings in small Pots, growing them on, to move to another area later.) Or try growing a sprouty Onion, or Garlic in your Veg from the Supermarket. The green shoots give off a pungent whiff, to confuse those carrot flies. Gardeners often do "Companion Planting", to aid, or rid Vegetables of issues.
😎
Where can I purchase some of these carrot seeds from plz??
Hi. Just look for a variety called Sweet Candle.
They are an amazing carrot that are so sweet and tender even when they get big.
Cheers,Dan 👍
Thanks Dan
I'm looking...and I'm unable to find a match. Is there a link or other direction?
Washed concretes sand?. Do you mean, washed river sand! Or horticultural sand? Concreter’s sand is never used in the horticulture industry. I have been a horticulturalist in the nursery for 30 years I have never heard of washed Concreteing sand being used. It’s to fine and it cakes and compacts very quickly and easily, hence the use in concrete.
