  • In this Film Courage video interview, Keith Sutliff shares challenges with making a movie using virtual production technology, including how images look in CGI, making an image environment/background in advance in order to test for glitches, configuring settings, etc.
    Film Director/Producer/Writer Keith Sutliff, originally from Florida, moved to Los Angeles in 2012. His award-winning work in film encompasses feature films, episodic narratives, short form content and commercial productions. Keith’s original screenplays are the foundation for his creative projects. His original screenplay The Refuge (2019), acquired by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is included in the Margaret Herrick Library (The Oscars Library) permanent Core Collection there. His feature films held premieres at Grauman’s Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood with theatrical releases to follow.
    Keith’s creative vision has driven him to master the aspects of filmmaking, writing and now virtual production. He founded his production company, KS Pictures, in early 2016. He is now fully committed to virtual production, opening a film studio in the Arts District-Downtown area of Los Angeles called “Sutliff Studios: Virtual Productions.” The studio focuses on rental to companies for film, TV, commercial, and other related media content productions. The studio also focuses on in-house production of its own virtual productions. This is done using the latest cutting-edge software and equipment to bring productions together on a virtual stage. Gaming software such as Unreal Engine combined with a camera tracking solution to help bring real time rendering along with “parallax” on the LED volume wall to life. He is also heavily involved in the operation of the production and filming techniques used on a virtual stage and In-Camera VFX. Familiarity with 2D and 3D assets used on a LED volume and all the technical elements that goes into filming on these stages.

      I'm preparing a children's musical and two operas for AI-CGI production - most everyone is new at this - but some movies over the past few years have done such a great job of it that the public has no idea it's all CGI

      Changes the whole design and pre-pro process. Now the VFX and environments have to be done before shooting, that changes the design process in huge ways. Not a lot of the cinema quality VFX teams know Unreal well. Lighting is hard, especially lighting that isn’t soft. Getting the practical sets to match the cg sets, and when you need to flip directions you need to swing the practical sets if there are recognizable objects. Similar to green screen that you start to feel the “stage” in camera directions, meaning you are stuck in a small space and you can feel that in the final edit…

First of all looked up for meaning of virtual production it’s film industry technology Revolving way films are made . Combining social and virtual elements.     The Dinosaurs in Jurassic park were mostly cgi. But they had planned to make them stop motion and they had giant heads and other practical pieces of the dinosaurs for certain shots. The key is using a mix of practical and special vfx.

    I did one extensive project using an LED volume. The technology was surprisingly rock solid. The biggest issues for me were getting cinematic contrast ratios and that the real engine assets are pretty usual. Had I had more time we could have spent way more time on those assets. The best results were when I created practical walls and used the LED screens as backgrounds not the rooms themselves. But it’s still a very new technology and is incredibly impressive. Anything beats green screen.

    Keep it old school! No CGI unless is completely NECESSARY!

      A cost benefit analysis would be helpful- extra colour grading time etc due to dealing w projected rather than reflected light

      @@geoffhoutman1557 Cinematographers used to do "colour grading" and the final look was decided by the film stock chosen. Digital "colour grading" is just as ugly as visible CGI sets and effects.

    Virtual production is ugly on screen. I really don't like it.
