I had honestly thought they had gone on location, as I couldn't see ( what has become obvious to most of us over the years) any little tell tale signs of a Green screen.
Disney Gallery has an episode where they specifically talk about George having an idea like this in his head when they were shooting the original Star Wars, but the tech just wasn't there. That's how advanced he was thinking back in the early 70's. Crazy.
The point was the easily could change an small part that had to be replaced with a green screen. Specifically where there was need for some acting in the background. When you think about it a big limiting factor with the led wall is that all actors have to bee close to each other.
The benefit is that you almost completely eliminate spill, and you get much more realistic lighting which will match up seamlessly with the background in post.
@@gaphoogys how would modelling a highly detailed helmet in CGI then still mapping real-time reflections on it be easier than putting on a silver helmet
Especially after making the very bold choice of having your leading actor hide his head for almost the entire show, literally every single second of the show would have to be edited.
It’s crazy that most of the special effects are basically a video game being run on ultra settings. 😂 it’s really impressive that a game engine is so advanced and detailed that it can be used to make photo realistic sets. The mandalorian truly is one of the best looking shows Iv ever seen so obviously what they’re doing is working quite well.
It also shows you where video games are going to be in 10 years. Games are already incredible but soon? We will be able to control this environment like movies...and then just like in the video...VR is just behind it. We are probably only 15 years away from a photo realistic VR game with full user control. Puts what Zuckerberg is doing with metaverse absolutely to shame when it seems like he is just building the same tech from scratch. One day..one day. Must be a trip to film as well. It must enhance the acting and voice acting tremendously when there isn't post production to wait for. Pedro could theoretically record his lines the day after shooting and watch the raw footage
@@cheetah219 I'd rather say like 9 years max. Larger video games in UE5 are probably around in like 4 - 5 years (I mean The Witcher "4" is probably going to be 2027), and then in 8 - 10 years max. for a full VR game to make use of this (but that heavily depends on how popular VR will become the next 4 - 5 years, and if there's even enough potential players for something like that)
This is amazing. This whole time I thought mandalorian was filming in actual deserts and forests in the world and building full sets. Obviously I knew there were plenty of VFX being used but still. DC needs to adopt this tech. The CGI in Batman v Superman and Justice league look fake AF.
@@lightningbeast4556 I think they had a combination of both. But what i meant was that this new method of background CGI was so realistic that i thought they were actually traveling all over the world to film a scene
If you watch the episode on this in the Mandalorian BTS doco, Lucas does very much like this. KK says it's exactly what he was aiming for when he tried to build a new studio back in the late 000s. But the construction of the studio was blocked by local residents, and his idea was too ambitious for technology at the time.
@Sir Knight Errant I'd argue the one good thing of the new movies is they do look great. As a fan of the world of Star Wars, it's still enjoyable to see more of it - even if the story sucks. But I also think it's a bit of a unfair burden to put on anyone who took Star Wars up that they had to not only make good movies, but ALSO revolutionize the film industry? It's one thing for Lucas, since it was his idea and everything, but...
I actually remember thinking when I first saw The Mandelorian that they were actually where they were in a dessert for example, never would’ve guessed this AT ALL
Now I understand for what kind of technology James Cameron was waiting for so badly. I feel like AVATAR is going to be insane with this. Imagine how real it’s going to feel like. Just mind blowing
Avatar can’t use this because they are all aliens and the budget is so big that it is easier to build sets for only human characters or actually go outside since it’s a natgeo environment with aliens on top
and THIS is why i've been saying that film and TV should be looking at two very specific things for it's future: 1 - video game technology, and 2 - theme park technology. this is a beautiful marriage of both!
The guy adjusting the environment with his iPad strongly makes me think of that scene in Bladerunner 2049 where you meet the girl in the dome creating memories.
As an aspiring actor, this is incredibly inspiring. I'm still in training, but I hope one day I can step into one of these virtual spaces, as it seems that for for the future, this is the way.
I think that they will become more popular and more widely used I'm currently on a specialist course lurning how to program and set these up they are way cooler in person
I'm pretty sure they have a software filter that sifts through all the footage looking for green screen glare and removes it, since it would be in almost every shot.... worth the time investment to create a repeatable process.
Zandor Felok Aw well that makes sense, I would assume they’d have to review the footage afterwards to make sure all green is removed or fixed, especially on reflective surfaces
The problem is that is the software is not always a 100% accurate because no shot is equal Some problems like lighting, spills, hair chroma key and tracking Are tough to manage with a few clicks of the software and often is a critical thinking phase for the VFX artist to find a way to make the shot work Good thing is that in big budget movies you don't work alone PS: big vfx coorporations have in-house software that is never released to the public and they kind of work wonders for tricky shots like that. Unreal engine 4 not only has made huge leaps in the video game world, but it look's so good that they're using it on movies, the detail and optimization upgrades are huge.
I would assume someone in this comment section mentioned this already, HOWEVER, the first major production to actually use this technique was Oblivion.
Nah @Blacklight Oblivion used front projection (and some rear), no parallax. And even that was essentially (as is this) repeating the one they didn't mention - Kubrick's Dawn of Man on 2001 which came out in 1968. The difference as they did say is parallax/movement.
@@CacheWeston Yeah, but if not him then we would probably have a random "highly praised" director that would fail The Mandalorian by bringing some normies to work

Christopher Nolan did something similar with Interstellar. Whenever they were in the spaceships, all the windows had screens outside them showing space. The actors talked about how incredibly helpful it was not to have to stare at green walls all day.
yeah but this makes it even easier for postproduction - let me explain. if you take the screens from interstellar and move your head or the camera in the cockpit the picture wont move - say you have 2 ppl there, both se the same stuff even if it would normally be impossible to see from their point of view. with this setup you have the screens at a distance around the cockpit and every actor and camera can film at the same time and have the right view on the screens. so in the first you have to change the videos/pictures on the screen with every camera switch - and you need to while with the second you could just have all the cams roll at the same time without the need for changing videos. but yeah the first is still way better than starring at a wall :P
The movie Oblivion, and the movie Gravity did something similar to this, “oblivion featurett sky tower” , “gravity light box” on YT shows behind the scenes, the difference is that back then you used pre made content so you had to determine the camera movement before shooting , now with unreal engine looking real enough in real-time you can move the camera on set and update background makes this method of film making way more practical.
That's the difference. I keep seeing people ask "How can the Mandalorian look so good for a show with a TV budget?" This is how. They basically invented a cheaper alternative to expensive CGI.
@@jmckendry84 It's expensive, but far less so than if they had tried to just brute force it with traditional CGI and green screen technology. It still uses CGI, technically, but not how really anyone else in the industry uses it. When characters are on set and visible, as much of the set is really there that was reasonable, and the parts they aren't interacting with might as well be there, since the actors can now see it in real time with the real lighting they'd experience.

They had to unfortunately do this for C-3PO in a lot of scenes. Paint out all the reflected blue and green by hand frame by frame. Highly reflective materials and green screen are a nightmare.

True, although the VFX in the prequels is basically a miracle considering the technology at the time
A modern Star Wars movie made by George Lucas would be the best looking movie ever.
Disney Gallery has an episode where they specifically talk about George having an idea like this in his head when they were shooting the original Star Wars, but the tech just wasn't there. That's how advanced he was thinking back in the early 70's. Crazy.

That he did. No doubt about it.
Sir Knight Errant I no longer have any trust in Abrams. The sequels, especially TROS, clearly shows that he has no original ideas.
@Sir Knight Errant I'd argue the one good thing of the new movies is they do look great. As a fan of the world of Star Wars, it's still enjoyable to see more of it - even if the story sucks.
