As a tradesman of 30 years I find most videos to be all about the bells and whistles. These videos are nearly always about the nuts and bolts. Much more useful for anyone wanting to learn. 👍
I'm not a roofer but have done a few in my years and I can see the attraction. You get a completely different perspective up there looking over the world.
If you want to make the slating up the valley easier for yourself. Next time widen the timber on your valley with a battern going up each side before your normal roof batterns. This will allow you more room for nailing your slates rather than risk having to nail into the lead. Good video 👍
Fantastic lead work there buddy. Love to see time and effort spent on leadwork as everyone know it last a long time so put the time and effort in at the start to make it look perfect.
That roof couldn't have been on there very long as it had breather membrane. I think it's only been around for less than 20 years. Shocking that it wasn't done right the first time! Nice job
@@BuildWithAE be good to see a lead welding demo from you, with all this time off im stuck in the garage practising haha. Do you have any other social platform you could share any tips? Much appreciated
louikn __ we don’t have any other informational platforms, we have Instagram which we will start to put more IG tv on , Facebook, LinkedIn. I Will speak to Will and see if we can organise in the future 👍. Thanks Tony
Hey great videos fella! I like the straight forward talk. When i do my leadwork i only nail one side to allow for expansion, i always patenate with oil after. But great job👍
Quality production. Very well explained and attention to detail at every stage. Awesome job a true professional at work. 👍👍. Thanks for taking the time to share. All the best Pete
Hi Ivor Every slate including cut slates always have 2 nails in. There’s no need to put a battern parallel as long as you you have 2 fixings and it doesn’t compromise the quality of the roof. 👍
Well made videos , but that leadwork was painful to watch trapping the lead in and puncturing it with some many nails where water is going to run under . Just an easier way and leak proof way is up the edge of your battens at the valley if they are 25 x 50 install a batten at 19 x 50 or similiar something shallower than your 25mm height so you can dress the lead into the timber but still let’s the slate come over into the valley bud . Only nail at lead head
Hi Parky, I've done 100's of lead valleys and have never been called back for 1. However, I have been called to people's jobs to repair lead that's slipped out of valleys because there's not enough fixings in it. If you watch the video you'll see I dip the copper nail in mastic to create a tight seal. Again, this is a video showing how I personally go about doing it. Your method will work for you and my mine works for me. Many thanks bud 👍
As parky has stated that's the way I was taught how to do valleys. Nail on the head only. So all you are relying on to stop rain getting in is your mastic.each to there own I guess but apart from that good work
Why so many nails when I was training I was told as little nails as possible because lead moves in heat and cold so it can tear if u put to many nails in it because it can expand and contract
Hi James, everyone has there own practice and views I believe when you think about lead it’s expansion and contraction with hot and cold might or might not havebmore stresses or not. But in the many years of doing this I have never had to go back with split lead. Thanks for watching 👍
instead of nailing them with mastic, why don't you clip them like i do with zinc ones ? allows free movement of the product all over too when it expands/crimps
Top man Will, very informative and done 100% professionally, old school tradesman. Been in the building game for 40 years, only a handful of good guys out there. Stay safe and keep up the good work.
Nice video, was watching as have to repair a valley that has lead down it but has old felt that crumbles. Was wondering if you put felt under the lead, so brought a book and it says no felt under lead as the sun can heat it up and melt it 😬 is this the case? The book looked about 20 years old but did show some breathable felt in it. Can you get high temp felts now days ? Thanks
Why don't you guys use contra battens over there in england? I learned it is best to keep off your battens of any felt or membrane. Water condensation is inevitable and if your felt is touching your battens they might rot away.
Honestly how do you balls up roof to this extent?? Been able to work out divide and gauge out the roof is ya bread and butter. Lads who did this before Will might aswell call it a day cos that's shocking! Good job lads! A&E smashed it in the end!💪👌💯
Good informative video. Just one question regarding batten spacing of 200mm. Would that spacing of 200mm be sufficient for any size slate or is 200mm specific to the length of the slate you were fixing to the existing roof of video?.....
That is soooo impressive. I know at the company i work at, slate roof are common and we try to avoid as much as possible. It’s hard to find people in Virginia who do slate roofs
asif zardari so true, we always vent at the bottom with eaves vents and then vent at the top with manthorpe vent system because of beautiful old rolled top ridges 👍

Great content from a real tradesman, very well explained
I don’t know nothing about roofing. But just watching your work method and workmanship. You’re a true professional. Few and far between now days.

What a great "how to" video. Really clear, easy to follow, confident explanation from a proper tradesman. 👏👏
Glad it helped, thanks for the kind words :)
Looking forward to the next part. Took the time to explain the how to do and the why to do, well done, very professional.

Use scaff boards bridged across the corner of the scaffold as a work bench for your lead work, save your knees and back 👍
Good shout 👍 thanks for watching Keep Safe

This guy is a pro defo knows what he’s doing. A joy to watch well done man 👍🏻
Thanks for watching Kataria 👍
why no batten running parralel with valley ? it really helps with fixing points for the cut slates that form the valley .. just saying ..
Hi Ivor Every slate including cut slates always have 2 nails in. There’s no need to put a battern parallel as long as you you have 2 fixings and it doesn’t compromise the quality of the roof. 👍
Fair play with those straight lines on lead in valley looks great 👍
Cheers James 👍
Beautiful job, loving the skills and craftsmanship 👍🏻

Tlx membrane is brilliant stuff. Used it when working on town hall in leeds.

Another great video 😀👍🏻
Very good guys
Brilliant video proper treadsman
good video mate, was eager to hear you properly explain the gauging out but I suppose you didnt have time. no worries
Great vid on the valley
Never realised that lead is still used these days! I think in central Europe all roof metalwork has been galvanised, aluminium or copper for decades!
Very tidy job 🙌

Spot on! Love these videos! Could watch them all day. One question, why don't you mastic the rest of the nails, only the welp side?
Hi Chris thanks for watching and your kind words, it only an over extra detail Will was shown by an old boy which made sense, you don’t have to 👍
@@BuildWithAE ah okay cool. I love old timer tips like that. Thanks for sharing
patenation oil? was always told code 5 for valleys
Code 4 or 5 can be used in lead valleys, patination oil will be used but couldn't at the time because of rain fall 👍
Very good, only comment is code 5 for Valley's.
Counter batten above TLX is preferable.
Hi Andrew Spence thanks for your kind words, you can use code 4 or 5 with using TLX they are happy plus we do put additional venting in 👍
wusste gar nicht, das man in der heutigen zeit noch ne bleikehle einbaut, heute wird normalerweise auch mit konterlatte gearbeitet
Top bloke and darn good workmanship....
What a professional great video lovely view of leamington from the roof 👍👍👍
A true tradesmen just wish the younger generation would go in to it.
But in heavy rain, won't the water go beyond the lead due to the steep angle of the roof.
Good informative video.
Just one question regarding batten spacing of 200mm. Would that spacing of 200mm be sufficient for any size slate or is 200mm specific to the length of the slate you were fixing to the existing roof of video?.....
Hi Smeps,
No, 200mm is for this type of slate. It changes depending on the size of slate your using 👍🏻
Brill👍
Thanks 👍
Top Class
That is soooo impressive. I know at the company i work at, slate roof are common and we try to avoid as much as possible. It’s hard to find people in Virginia who do slate roofs
Nice. Must have been some proper comedians up there before you. All the slates missing the battens is unbelievable, and I bet they got the money too!
Patination oil?
Hi Darragh Joyce it has been done 👍 Keep Safe
👌🏻
this roof doesnt look too old. What do yo uthink the age is? Slate roofs are supposed to last close to 100 years
Would all the roofers of 20 odd year waffling in the comments please upload their own tutorial to youtube, you guys are totally amazing. XOX
TLX Gold insulation should be counterbattend for air flow
Hi Miles all will become apparent in part 2?when you see the vents put in which allows a certain square meter of air flow 👍
If I'm not mistaken according to their instructions you can drape it also without counterbatten to create an air gap..
asif zardari so true, we always vent at the bottom with eaves vents and then vent at the top with manthorpe vent system because of beautiful old rolled top ridges 👍
Wouldn't you also need counter battens to allow any water getting through the slates to run down?
Hi Stephen S No need bud, TLX is a awesome product we think, so much versatility, thanks for watching keep safe 👍
Code 4 lead !!! I just fell of my chair that won't last long
jlewis1688 please enlighten us as to why this code 4 Lead won’t last long!
That’s a monkey up there fixing that lead u don’t put nails there u only want 2 nails at the top the worm will hold bottom edge
I’m a roofer (20 years) why would he use thicker than code 4?! That’s exactly what I would use as well.
It’s a valley not a box gutter.
Tony Cayzet 2 nails at the top?!
I’d rather him working on my house then you in that case.
Do you find nails expensive in you’re part of the world ?!
joecee67 no I would not have done that either but in terms of using code 4 that is fine
Comments sections were all the roofing specialist come out there shell
Defo need "lets crack on" on a hat bud
Looks good but shud fold over each side of lead
