    I think this work for light frost like this, when its colder outside the bag would have to go slower to melt the ice, getting colder faster but more importantly I'd be worried about window cracking possibly due to big temperature difference.

      Yeah it's dipped to like minus 12 or something here in Glasgow just now. I've been looking for a quick way to do it but I'm scared to try this while it's so cold.

    • @andw2638
      @andw2638 Год назад +3

      It could be combined with running the car engine with the blower on full heat and recirculate (to warm the air already in the car) and with the door locked with the spare key, for a few minutes before. (Don't sit in the car or your breath will freeze on the inside of the windscreen which in my experience takes even longer to sort out). That way the melted ice is less likely to re-freeze.
      If the window is really icy I would use a thicker bag in case a shard of ice punctured it and caused 80+ deg C water to leak out, which could result in cracking

      Not all glass is made the same way and they have very different properties ..They're much tougher than they look. Those windscreens they're laminate. It's not like a plate glass window. Very hard to break with heat. Even boiling water is unlikely to do it, but some warm water in a bag definitely won't break the glass. I tip lukewarm water over mine from a bucket, done it hundreds of times on all of my windows in Scotland. It's never broken anything not even close...
      Be more careful with your the other windows on your though as they are not laminated . In any case, the solution this guy has come up with will work on all your windows. Don't worry about it. It doesn't have to be boiling water, just warm.

    • @michaelhoodleeder

      Also new windscreens are not rigidly stuck on. They are put on with a sealant and are able to move and expand by design.

    It doesn’t work if it’s freezing outside as the melted ice quickly refreezes and then scraping ice is much harder than a frost layer unless you’re quick enough with the wipers

    • @flash-wg4bt

      That's why we need to start the car while doing this so it warms up the engine. Then use the fan heater to stop ice re forming. Otherwise you're just wasting more time having to re clear the new ice.

    Good way to crack your windshield is using hot water on it when it's frozen. Instead, take a spray bottle filled with 2 parts rubbing alcohol and one part cold water. Rubbing alcohol has a very low freeze point level and will melt the ice in seconds to a couple of minutes depending on how frozen your car windshield is. A simple frosting like in the video here will just take seconds to melt. Spray the entire window with the solution then jump in your car and turn on the wipers. Simple as that. This solution is also handy for defrosting your door locks and door seals so you can unlock and open your door if they are frozen over by some freezing rain. I also spray the wipers blades and the connection where the wiper arms are connected to the mother so I don't risk ruining the wiper motor when they are completely frozen over. I've had to replace wiper motors twice in the past due to ice build up preventing the wipers from moving.
    You can also keep the spray bottle in your car for emergencies when you're away from your home and your car was iced over from a bit of freezing rain.

      @@RovingChestnut Hi Roving, my reminder, is for viewers in colder places. I'm watching from Canada, where the temperature differential could be a lot greater. A light frost around 0'C, is not winter yet, here. Last week, my cousin on the farm, sent a picture of the (outdoor) thermometer. It was at the -40'C bottom, of the tube.

    It can seem counterintuitive, not all glass is made the same way. Car windscreens are laminated. It is not like pouring hot water on a bottle in the sink. Completely different type of glass. Do bear in mind only the car windscreen is laminated. It is by a long way the toughest piece of glass on the car. All the glass on the car is much more resilient than a bottle or plate glass for example. Just use warm water. It doesn't have to be boiling. We live in Scotland and I tip a bucket of tepid water over all of the windows on my car to de ice them . Maybe I've just been lucky, I have done it hundreds of times and I have never broken anything. I would not use boiling water , or even hot water. You will be surprised how just tepid water is more than enough.. It saves your windscreen wipers too.
