While "Carol for another Christmas" does contain much of what made The Twilight Zone such an interesting watch- it also contains some of the things that weakened the quality of the series: total lack of subtlety and a simplistic, almost childish, black and white view of the world. These shortcomings weren't really fatal to a half hour show- but are a tremendous obstacle to overcome with an hour and a half running time . Worth a one time watch out of curiousity-the preachiness becomes hard to endure and it's actually a sorry reminder of the limitations of its writer.
Just watched the opening scene. Here's an updated line of dialogue for D. Grudge... [Grudge to his bleeding heart nephew]... "How many more billions of dollars should America send to other countries, or be given away to people who are here illegally? How many billions do you plan to have us spend? How many? While so many American citizens are in need, and the rest of us are overtaxed?" I'm with Grudge!
"We stay on our side of the fence. That ocean you call a fence keeps nothing out any more." In this day and age, it's all the more true. Does any country have borders these days?
Great job on this video! Definitely do a 25-minute TV episode version. That would be a lot of fun to watch, especially as the overlong dialogues would be cut out. It's interesting how in this film to be on the side of the angels meant to be for intervention, in contrast to the isolationists in American politics. As the Vietnam War wore on, intervention took on an evil cast - associated with warmongering, hegemony, economic domination, Cold War cynicism, etc. This film couldn't have been made even just a few years later.
Thank you so much for showing parts of this film. I saw it when it was televised. I mostly remember Sellers and this whole Scene. And I thought, this will never happen. It already did in Germany, Russia, and Italy. Megalomaniacs are the same down through the ages. Sellers’ extreme narcissism fits right in with today, doesn’t it? Goldwater was drop in the ocean compared to what we have now👹👹👹👹 I think you’re wrong about this being dated! Totally. A Christmas Carol is an everlasting tale - as you can see in this film that the all the basic events are the same, including the two children. There are many films about Scrooge, including this one. It’s history and should not be forgotten. 🙅🏻♀️🙅🏽🙅🏾♂️🙇🏼♀️🙇🏾🙇🏿♂️
@@KennethHoffman-p4k Of course it does, because we have been so conditioned by most every form of media that fall right in line to promote so many untruths. What comes to mind here is the 'leader' with the demonic eyes who held Americans transfixed for eight years, and who continues to wield his influence over the major forces that control America's narrative - the one who told us we needed to 'fundamentally transform' our culture, and who - in every single aspect of our lives - has done just that. It has taken America 15 years to wake to the impact this has had on our nation and beyond. I pray it isnt too late to reverse the damage done. I fear it very well may be. Those of us who do not dig deep for genuine truth are the greatest, and worst, of fools.

🎥🎬Sterling Hayden was a newsworthy item before acting. The yearly schooner race between the US and Canada (Bluenoose) was sports NY Times cover page. He was often singled out for his work on one of the ships. In the scenes shown, he has (in your words) “commanding” presence and sailor-like bearing.
21:24 .. Why no Benjamin ? Please, a very Jewish name. We equate it with knowledge, too much … for most thinking people. BG .. Barry Goldwater. Lived through the era and it would be easy to do.
Yes! We’ve lost enough young men and treasure to European wars in particular. They seem to pop up every ten years so you would think the EU members would increase military spending, but no, that’s left to the American taxpayer. It’s absolutely ridiculous that European members of NATO fail to pay all their dues leaving the US to make up the shortfalls and year after year fall to spend the required 2% on their militaries. Now, with Putin threatening Europe, we are the ones footing the bill. We have spent more than all of Europe combined. I think the only people worth helping over there are the Poles and possibly the Baltic states. Germany and France can go to ****. Enough Americans have lost their lives over their wars.

@lindarock4128 Thank you. I wonder on how many other videos Charlie posted the same copy-paste. Since he does it here, I’ll repeat my same response again: Financial greed is child’s play to unfettered power to print money to pay industrialists to do your political bidding. Also, that same “greed of industrialists” that exists everywhere from Albania to North Korea to Zimbabwe…
I agree with the dominant sentiment, more talk less war. Unfortunately the UN has turned into a tool for some to reshape humanity in bad ways. We need people to step up voluntarily and affect change not governments and institutions created and staffed by governments. Individualism is not the problem, the smallest minority IS the individual! And there for at risk from oppression from the very governments who are supposed to protect their interests and the interests of their communitys. Individuals can come to gether voluntarily to promote and protect their interests.
This movie was shown earlier this year near Los Angeles with Rod Serling's daughter in attendance. Unfortunately I had to miss it. Good to know it is here on RUclips.
I'm 71, and as a kid back in the 60's was glued to the TV ( black and white Zenith.. remember those !) zoned out ( no pun intended) to everyone of Rod Serlings productions. And of course we knew in the end, they were fiction, and would NEVER happen. He made these to warn us that it could, and now it seems they are no longer fiction.
We had a black and white Admiral. The Twilight Zone episode "The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street" reminds me of the current spread of paranoia with all the drone sightings. Rod was way ahead of his time.
The film has been shown on TCM. Essentially a UN propaganda piece. Move to the 21st Century, and we can say it was prophetic in that we have had our endless wars, and we also have the UN's spawn, Davos (let them eat bugs). I don't believe that is way they would have wanted to convey back then. Interesting documentary here; maybe a tad longwinded.
@@meh8982 I think he's saying that we didn't have to finance a bunch of ineffectual, self-aggrandizing connivers while those previous endless wars played out.
I'm thinking the over the top ten gallon hat character played by Peter Sellers could be a jab at Texan President LBJ. Both LBJ and Imperial Me are a lot alike.
Thank you for bringing this thought provoking Masterpiece to my attention. Your description was amazing. The movie was, at times, scarily prescient. The Peter Fonda character's - Marley, face being barely visible, was probably meant to enable viewers to envision their beloved lost Veterans. ROD SERLING was a Master of The thought-provoking presentation. May God bless 🙌 His Powerful Soul 🙏 ❤🎉 P.S. : Joan Rivers was so Beautiful, as seen in the photo early in your presentation. 🌹
I prefer Serling when he was telling entertaining, fantasy stories of the strange and mysterious rather than the more 'preachy' stories he lapsed into. When entertainment is a sermon it becomes boring. We see this much more now in the 2020s when self righteousness seems to be the normal on TV and the Internet. I can see why this story was not so well received at the time.
Being someone who was around in the 60's, one should consider what the political and social, situation. In addition to the monthly fire drills, we also had monthly bomb drills, air raid sirens once a month usually at none, but I don't remember which day, private bomb shelters, public bomb shelters, and the thing that all these items were designed for, nuclear war. Then we were coming off of two World Wars, and the Korean War, with all the death, horrible things done by both sides, and the bombs. That's why the preachyness. Even after all that, we ended up in Viet Nam ... and Iraq ... and Afghanistan. Hopefully the world will learn how to cooperate instead of fight.
Huge Serling fan but this is way too heavy handed for my taste and nothing I'd ever care to watch around the holidays. Rather I would recommend something a little more hopeful; Twilight Zone's The Night of the Meek Season 2, Ep. 11.
Wow...that's quite a cast that was assembled. Hayden was at the top of his game in Kubrick's "Dr Strangelove " as Gen. Jack D. Ripper.... who was overly concerned about 'precious bodily fluids'. And of course, Sellers was superb in 3 different roles, including the title charter. I'll check this one out for sure.
Saw this in its original release. It’s haunted me ever since. Particularly Sellers performance. Notice some of his gestures at his podium. Right out of hitler’s Nuremberg rallies. Eerie Cold War weirdness. Serling was a true artist.
Thank you very much for this video! I never heard of this movie. And I think, with all the isolationalist tendencies in today's world, the message is just as important.
I will definitely be checking this movie out as Twilight Zone and Rod Serling as big favorites of mine. It would be interesting to see this cut to either a half hour or hour Twilight Zone episode...
Walter, your critique misses the context that imbued TV in 1964. The blade-sharp division we have today between “documentary” and “entertainment” did not yet exist. It was evolving. Serling was part of that evolution. Other early TV shows like You Were There and Insight were documentaries enacted as stories for television. This is a story with documentary features. It is also a documentary in story form. In a way, so was Dickens’ original. Had Rod lived longer (too long the smoke in the lungs) he may have had to choose if he wanted to go down the Ken Burns (The Civil War, etc.) route or the Aaron Sorkin (West Wing, etc.) route. Pioneers should not be judged 60 years later by the same standards as those who have built on the foundations and road signs those pioneers first invented and built.
Ok, I did like others here, watched the intro of yours then went and watched the whole movie. Besides being Rod at his absolute most preachy, right there with the boxing episode and George Takie episode of Twilight Zone. The Takaie one was so preachy it too was banned from TV for practically forever. But here's the thing with this movie. Besides being over the top political, what really hurt it was Scrooge, I mean "Grudge" (yeah, subtle as cactus for a wedding gift), was not played for any sympathy at all. He was clearly the bad guy and when delivering his lines of reason, they were delivered so stoically or "get off my yard" fashion you never liked the guy. Scooge is supposed to be mean but because of a lot really big mistakes he made along the way. He was never a bad guy, he was just cold from all the heartache. Grudge on the other hand was just a card board cut out of what would be the stereotype of a Nixon or Trump supporter, and a stereotype that was so far off the mark that like this guy, he is as believable as a real character as two MAGA guys in sub temperatures chasing down Jussie Smullette.
Thank you for this analysis. I had viewed this movie for the first time here on You Tube last year (2023). It stuck with me for a very long time. I agree with much of what you presented. I feel condensing this movie to 26-minute episode would do it a lot of injustices. However, I think the Me People sequence would be apropos for today's online culture and could stand alone as a Twilight Zone episode on its own.
Rod was an early proponent of the obnoxious lefty preaching, that we see today. When he stuck to his craft, writing imaginative screenplays, attracting other great writers who contributed to Twilight Zone, he could be amazing. But too much Rod, and you get this pedantic crap.

I was NOT disappointed. Bravo Mr. Serling et al.
For heaven's sake, why didn't you just air the show? It would have been much more interesting to hear what they were saying instead of your analysis.

In reflection, Grudge was correct and our foreign interference has only helped the industrial war industry
You are conflating two distinctly different ideas, the necessity of our involvement in WW2, and the greed of industrialists that came after.
One act of brave support for our neighbors across the Atlantic, was never going to wipe out the inherent nature of greed completely.
Each generation must face that on their own and after the war we did indeed fail to, here in our own nation.

Probably true, but it does need thoughtful debate every time.

Sterling Hayden was a WWII vet. He was in the OSS and operated in the Balkans under the pseudonym of John Hamilton.
In the OSS as a US Marine. Got into the OSS due to his service as a young man in the US Merchant Marine in many, many places.
I like anything Rod Serling writes, whether it's this one, Twilight Zone, or even the screenplay for Seven Days in May.
TCM has shown Carol for Another Christmas every year for the last 20 years.
NOTE: This will be on Christmas Eve morning at 5:15AM EST
Walter, I am so glad I joined this channel. Great video as always. Going to definitely check this out. Great work as always. Keep it up!
Thanks!
AAAAAAMEN!
Rod’s work is always good with a moral or timeless twist that stands true today
Or go in a anthology direction with sci-fi and thriller elements
Just watched the opening scene. Here's an updated line of dialogue for D. Grudge... [Grudge to his bleeding heart nephew]... "How many more billions of dollars should America send to other countries, or be given away to people who are here illegally? How many billions do you plan to have us spend? How many? While so many American citizens are in need, and the rest of us are overtaxed?"
I'm with Grudge!
"We stay on our side of the fence. That ocean you call a fence keeps nothing out any more." In this day and age, it's all the more true. Does any country have borders these days?
Sterling Hayden lived a life that would fill several movies..

I first watched it last Christmas Eve, I loved it, i especially like Rod Serling’s politics- and the surprise Peter Sellers appearance
Goldwater was drop in the ocean compared to what we have now👹👹👹👹
I think you’re wrong about this being dated!
The "Imperial Me." The first thing that came to mind was a certain past-and-future president. Like Orwell, many of Serling's works are timeless.

Wow, Grudge turned out to be correct. Avoid interventionism and the growth of the Military Industrial Complex. No more endless wars.

Are you trying to say that there weren't endless wars before the UN?

I do not know about a 30-minute version, but cutting some exposition sounds like a good idea.
The portrait of Marley was Peter Fonda, who was edited out of the movie, but the portrait remained.
Amen!
Excellent presentation and analysis. Bravo!
I'd love to see it as a half hour Twilight Zone episode. Best of luck.
Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
Thank you! Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you!

Huge Serling fan but this is way too heavy handed for my taste and nothing I'd ever care to watch around the holidays. Rather I would recommend something a little more hopeful; Twilight Zone's The Night of the Meek Season 2, Ep. 11.
Your screen name tells us everything we need to know about you, Randian.

A very simplistic and infantile perspective from a much more naive time.
Ahh an early Christmas present 🙏

The cast is incredible.
The disfigured girls who start to sing really welled me up. So powerful and moving.
This was a great version of a Christmas carol such great actors who were famous and would be famous I really love this movie
I have never heard of this movie, until I watched this video😳🤯, and happy new year to you and yours Walter🥳🎉🎊.
Thanks for watching and Happy New Year to you as well!
You sound liberal.😂😂😂
You do know she lost, don'tcha?...
God forbid you be exposed to viewpoints other than your own.
