In Texas, you may not stop and detain someone for carrying a backpack at 3am unless you have RAS or PC.

Comply is not the thing because sometimes the request for compliance is unjust. But, be POLITE. Telling an officer he can’t search my vehicle is non compliance, and justified, but I should do it with respect.

And Trayvon didn't die because he refused to comply with Neighborhood Watch, he died because he assaulted a citizen and smashed his head into the pavement.

To add to Brent's point about "walking thru someone else's neighborhood", I personally have noticed that when interacting with different kinds of people outside your own "bubble", unannounced to them, courtesy and compromise go a long way. Tyler's approach to the backed-in vehicle with the intent he had, in my opinion, seems very reasonable.
I'm curious Tyler, what is your thought process going up to an unknown vehicle like that? Is there any anxiety of weapons upon approach, like an ambush, especially when its a new area you aren't intimately in tune with the general populous?

Community policing was awesome - and it had tangible results. We got away from that, and everyone started being touchy-feely hug-a-thug and now police are hands-off. Now it's more of an "us vs them" mentality in some places instead of it being a team effort.

Guys, I know this isn't what this particular conversation is about but I could use some clarity...I recently posted the following on a CNN video about the war in Afghanistan and would like to know what you think as higher tiered guys. I was just a 11B from 2008-2014, Afghanistan, August 2010- August 2011.
:Ya know, what's sad is that so many people today have forgotten why we went to war in Afghanistan to begin with. It wasn't a war for conquest, it wasn't a war for resources(They don't have any), It was a war for blood. The Taliban were protecting Al-Qaeda and Bin Laden who were responsible for almost 3,000 American civilians dead. We extracted that blood from them in great quantities, but saying we lost is a joke because how it ended was how it was ALWAYS going to end. I could have told you that when I came home in 2011 after a year there. At no point ever did any of us say to ourselves "ya know the day Afghanistan is a flourishing democracy....." Because that was never in the cards for those people, even if hundreds of thousands of Afghans wanted that, the majority did not. We gave those people twenty years of our blood, resources, intelligence, industry, infrastructure and it all crumbled before the Taliban even got to Kabul when Karzai took the money and ran. It's insane to me how many Americans are acting like the Taliban, Bin Laden, Al- Qaeda, Hamas, or any other extremist group are or were some how the "good guys". Americans who have never been to war have a very unrealistic idea of how horrible a thing it actually is. Historically, those who want the least to do with it are those who suffer the most.

The problem is cops are a taxi service to booking, criminal is back on the streets in a few hours because courts don't punish crime. Everyone with crime problem wants more cops, but it doesn't change the problem. Plus if convicted the punishment is jail where you are traumatize and create smarter and harder criminals.

Innocent life lost can’t be justified, and it will never be easy to handle. I think the goal should be to REDUCE the likelihood of that happening, especially as a result of police intervention. With tech today, I don’t see why police pursue anyone other than maybe an active kidnapping, or someone driving the wrong way- an active threat to civilians. A guy who robbed the gas station down the street and left without hurting anyone? No way. Get the plate, get the vehicle, find him later I mean there’s gotta be a better way than pursuing 100mph plus thru residential like the Arkansas State Police LOVES posting on their RUclips channel.
As firemen, we go into burning buildings needlessly sometimes. But we do it to double check no one is inside, or to be aggressive and try to “save the building” even though it’s likely insured. Whatever the case, we’re risking ourselves. Pursuits put everyone on the road, in their yards, on their bikes, at risk. Reduce risk to innocent life- ultimate goal
