I love this poem by Tolkien because it so beautifully expresses a heart that yearns for the ocean. I wanted to write a melody that supported the emotions of a heart that yearns for the ocean - and the joys of someone who has tasted the salt sea air, and heard the wailing of the gulls. I look forward to sharing more songs from my Tolkien project soon.

Ahh... Why is this so sad...
I used to cry every time I see "I will leave, I will leave the woods that bore me", because whenever I see this sentence I can imagine a picture of Legolas walking away from where he was raised and where he's father is, sailing to the West all alone, and never being able to return again...
He went with Gimli, I’m sure his father went as well.
@@thomasalvarez6456 or he stayed with his forest.
He will return, when Morgoth will come to Middle-Earth.
@@helivaheristo9254 there source say after war of ring his went to Aman
I used to hate that Tolkien made the elves long for the sea; it just seemed way too sad to me. But now I appreciate the melancholy of it, and think it makes the story just that much more poignant. Your song evoked that beautifully.
Laura Andrews Well, the elves and even men longed for the land of the West I suppose, over the straight Road. Or rather the Undying Lands in Aman. "Lands there are to West of West, where night is quiet and sleep is rest. Guided by the Lonely Star, beyond the utmost harbour-bar, I'll find the havens fair and free, and beaches of the Starlit Sea." Interesting lore behind it. It was the elves known as the Teleri, or the sea elves, that made the White ships which sailed to the west :)
Well done Matthew. You have the truth of it. The Quendi were permitted to return home for their place in Arda, but the Atani were not for both their role in Atalante and the Second Theme of Iluvatar. The Quendi may envy us at the End for our Gift of Departing, but they may yet return to Aman and the blessedness that only existed when the Valar walked the earth.
lotr is full of melancholy he story of men and elves are full of it just listening to the audiobooks make me melancholic also .
I LONG FOR MIDDLE-EARTH AND IT SHALL BE SUFFICIENT FOR A MORTAL LIKE ME STUCK HERE
@@snowwriting You have a short life, but do what you can with what you have where you are that you will not be forgotten until the last life you have touched is gone. That is JRRT's legacy.
This is the best rendition of the Song of the Sea I have heard before. The melody is so melancholy and sorrowful, yet rolling like the waves on the shore he must go to... At least he had a friend by his side when the time came to sail.

God, this part sounds so´damned sad.Elves are immortal and even their time runs out...

😭💔
It give me chills
i swear im crying right now i hate it that he heard the sea longing nobody loved the trees as much as legolas did, my meleth nin did not deserve this, this TOTALLY SHOULD HAVE BEEN IN THE MOVIE THIS IS HEARTBREAKING!!! great job mellon nin :(
I once travelled to Colombia and there I visited the Nevados, the snowy peaks in Manizales. Once we got there, the tour guide told us "Apreciate what you're seeing, because due to climate change in less than a decade this is all going to vanish". I was surprised with what she said, but after that I saw some old pictures of the same Nevados and there was indeed way more snow back then.
A few weeks later, coincidently, I started reading the LOTR trilogy, and while reading about the elves I remembered those snowy peaks I visited: It was something truly magical, but I know that I, and a lot of people, will probably never see them and feel that way again, not because of money or time, but because it was simply comming to an end. And suddenly I could identify myself with Samwise and all the other characters who saw the elves, knowing that they would all soon be gone from Middle-Earth, and so would all the magic they represented. It's a really depressing thought, but now I know how true it is.
Are you certain that you are not an elf?
I think Illuvatar himself would be impressed.
this is the most beautiful song ever, goes perfectly with Legolas's character.
Can I just say how awesome it is to receive so many encouraging comments? Thanks for all the kind words!
wy can't I download this to my mp3 player!? I want to listen to the song before bed, but it's not letting me download. if you made it so I can't download it, can you please make it so I can, I really would like to be able to listen to the song before I fall asleep at night. please.
Norna Sharp Hi Norna...You can download my song from my website: yolandamott.weebly.com/tolkien-project.html. If you scroll to the bottom of the page you'll see the mp3 files. Right click on the song you'd like to download and select "Save link as...". You might want to save it to your desktop computer first, and then from there add the song to your mp3 player. I hope this works for you! Thanks for listening :)
Yolanda Mott i dont see any save link. I cant download it. What should i do?
Sonya Audrelianti You could always use a RUclips to MP3 converter on this video and then transfer it over like with a normal music file (If Yolanda is alright with it, of course)
I think all your work is beautiful and your voice is amazing. Do you think you could ever have it available as sheet music?
This was a great part in the book. Where Legolas actually thinks about leaving Middle-earth, but the words of Gimli, and his friendship with the dwarf, talk him out of it.
Don't worry, they eventually go to Valinor.
Gimli, because of his friendship with Legolas and devotion to Galadriel is the only dwarf to have gone to the elves' home beyond the sea.
This song moved me to tears when I first heard it years ago. Forgot about it, came back now and I'm crying once again. I don't know what it is about those lyrics, this poem, to make me feel all these emotions.
I get goosebumps whenever I listen to this.
L3ggy as you should!
It makes me so sad that Legolas did not heed Galadriels warning.
Ulmo would have spoke to him in his time. When he built the grey ship in Ithilien with his friend Gimli Gloin's son, his future was made. As one of the Fellowship, he had a mightier fate than his kin, and so sailed into the West at the last.
Technically he did for a good 20 years or so and repaired the forests (mainly Mirkwood) to their former glory before he even saw the sea so he did a pretty good job.
Well said and done, young lady. You are quite correct. Fond regards to you and your studious efforts, from a forty-year Tolkien scholar.
That was his fate, netwitch56. It was made during Eru's First Theme in the Music of the Ainur. The gulls of Ulmo (like unto the Eagles of Manwe Sulimo) speak to all the Children of Iluvatar on behalf of the Valar who love them, but the First Song holds the Quendi to their ultimate end. If you have read the Valaquenta then you will know of Tuor and his people, a fate made by Ulmo himself that leads to the Tale of Earendil.
Do not punish yourself my lady. Time gives us understanding of many things, and you have kept what you read those many years ago close to your heart. Now you share those stories with us that you love, and we understand because we love the same story. The Quenta Silmarillion was written when even my grandparents were children, but I love that those tales go beyond England and the reasons why they were written. Welcome to Arda, and the beginning of the World when we all were young. If you ever feel the need to share your hopes, dreams and the tale of your life, then you know where to find friends with whom you can share your story. After all, JRRT would have liked us to tell our tales.
This song touches my heart, and makes me feel a deep melancholy for those lost this year. May you all find happier shores. My heart aches for your passing. I'm sorry you went alone, scared and confused. Away to the sea.
This makes my blood run cold it's so beautiful and so heart breaking , I know it's legolas' song but I just think about thranduil and how he must feel
I cried. Still am.
i truly believe this is how Tolkien imagined this. your voice is truly elven and beautiful. i hope you never stop singing, you are so talented. so beautiful.....
“This video is old. Very old.”
-Legolas Greenleaf.
And your voice is amazing 🤗💯
as someone who is an ocean lover, this makes me want nothing more than to go to the sea.
Everytime I hear seagulls, I love the sound. I instantly think of the sea and am comforted.
I cannot get enough of this excuse me while i go cry and Smile With joy and sorrow.
An absolutely beautiful tribute to Tolkien's words and tales. As all who have felt the grace of this melody upon their ears, I find tears still welling in my eyes. Thank you for bringing Legolas's song so marvelously to life.
This should have been in the films. Wonderful job!
It should, but its sort of re-written as chunks of 'Into the West' particularly the chorus
Oh my gosh, I'm going to cry! :'( Legolas is my favorite character!!
I swear to the valar, this is the sweetest thing ever!
I was in tears after listening to this song.😉 This is so heart touching. You have an amazing voice.😇 This creation must be really appreciated.😆
Thank you for making these Tolkien songs. I have been listening to them for years now.
This is sadder than anything sad. I can't stop crying.
lotr is melancholic the story of the elves and men are full of melancholy when i hear the audiobooks i can fell it .
this + ocean waves playing on another tab = beautiful, on repeat for hours
Yolanda I love you !!!! I just finished the LOTR books and I'm crying listening to your beautiful song. You put so much nostalgia, so much sadness yet hope in your song it is overwhelming.
Simply amazing, such sadness and melancholy.....for me your best song
Thank you for the kind comments Eamane! I really appreciate the encouragement. I haven't written a melody to the poetry of Tinuviel and Beren yet, but I hope to someday.
This is beautiful! You have done a lovely bit of work that I think would have made JRRT happy to hear. Your music certainly captured the songs meaning and left me missing the sea from when I spent a year living in a sailboat, sailing on weekends and holidays. At one time I was very much caught up in wanting to sail around the world in my 30’ sloop. Then I upgraded to a 40’ sloop as the fever rose. But alas I was needed (and one time wanted) elsewhere, so I gave up that dream. Though it has not given up on me since I dream about it frequently.
I love the Elves and their melancholy. How could one not feel a bit sad after living a few thousand years, losing friends, both Elf and not-elf. And, in the case of Elrond whose brother chose the “Gift of Men”, and then some 2,000 years later his daughter died the same. But with the great deeds they’d done and the many tragedies that befell them individually and as a people their sorrow would become eventually very palpable. The only medicine for that kind of sickness can only be found West of West.
Thank you for this beautiful work. Best wishes in 2022 from Texas, John The Inscrutable.
I may listen to this as I fall asleep tonight. It’s so beautiful, and it sounds so very elvish, I could listen to it forever!
This is such a beautiful song... Can I just say that you have brought this piece to life; I dont think I'll ever be able to read it the same way again.
Thank you! Yes, that is me singing. I'm glad you enjoy it!
this is my favorite poem in the lords of the ring
Ever since I read those beautiful lyrics in the LotR, I have loved Legolas' Song of the Sea. I made up my own tune long ago and although I've mostly forgotten how it went, this song of yours has a very familiar sound! But yours is gorgeous. Thank you for such a beautiful rendition!
This song makes me feel like I'm standing on a chesil beach in Scotland, feeling the wind, hearing the gulls and smelling the salt while the sea is roaring. How strange. I never was in Scotland
wow, that actually brought a tear to my eye, very beautiful
This is amazing! This really shows Legolas's love for the sea
Absolutely beautiful!
God bless you.
This is such a beautiful song. I am just overwhelmed by it's beauty...
this is so wonderful that I listen to this every night before I go to sleep xxx
This is absolutely and seriously overwhelming, I cried all over my laptop and can't find any tissues now! And I can only say le hannon for this wonderful piece of music which is fitting our Greenleaf so perfectly. Your voice is astonishing and has great cadence. Again - all I can do is thank you for this. And I shall take a look at the rest of your project now.
I was really about to cry, your voice is so beautiful and it just captures the moment so well!
Wow, always nice to find a gem from a decade ago
This deserves a laurel wreath; masterfully done.
+Richard Paul
Thank you so very much!
This is flawless! Is it possible for you to post an instrumental of some sort or the notes? I would love to play this, its so serene and beautiful! But I cannot hope to sing it, for if I try to sing that high I sound like a strangled cat! You sing it effortlessly and beautifully, your voice is truly breath-taking.
I always sing that to my little one to sleep ... He loves it!
You voice is so much more than just good. You could be an elf!
A beautiful song , performed by a beautiful voice that makes the heavens cry
I’ve just finished my biannual reading of lotr. When I was reading this poem, I heard your song in my head.
If anyone can rerecord this in Elvish, it would sound epic on a whole new level.
But to say that this is beautiful would be an understatement. To do it justice would require some words that, as a gentleman, it would be inappropriate for me to utter.
This was beautiful and really moving. Your voice was lovely. The elves would have loved it.
Well done! The 'songs' in Tolkien's works have always made me want to see what someone else thought they would sound like. The LOTR movies did a good job, and your interpretation is quite nice.
I cannot believe that I have not come across this beauty before today. My oh my, what a treat. I am going to check out everything you have done.
You are my favorite singer! These are so good! I listen to them on repeat many times and they never get old! You also have great Cello skills. Tolkien would be proud!
I miss the joy of the sea. I used to be able to hike to the ocean.
most beautiful song of the sea ever i think or ever heard...
This is beautiful! You have an excellent singing voice! I love this! I don't think anybody could have done a better job! If they had put this song in the movie, this is how it should sounded. You have such a beautiful voice, truly Elven. This is amazing!!! Keep the good work up!!!! :'D
Just wow! Can't say anything more... I'm speechless🥺
This melody in combination with your incredibly voice... I must cry everytime I hear this song. Very impressive!😍
I absolutely love this rendition.
This is so perfect. It definitely sounds elvish. Thank you for putting Tolkien's beautiful words to fitting music!
this was more than wonderful. im completely amazed by the beauty and the elven emotion that you captured.
this is so beautiful! It sounds fresh and new while staying true to Tolkien. It honestly seems to hold the feeling. It also keeps with elven singing, which is difficult. Amazing job!
I'll say again, that's soo beautiful, a wonderful version of Legolas' song of the Sea I LOVE IT
This is so beautiful and so sad at the same time. Thank you so much for putting this poem to music.
This is so beautiful.
I've listened to it for about four hours and counting now.
I'm going to get legolas to see this. Definately. I love it.
Moving. You've done yourself proud Yolanda and have more than done justice to this great song, you've captured it's essence ;-)
You did a terrific job! They should have your voice and song on official soundtrack!
This is so damn beautiful, so emotional it makes myself long for the sea (and the undying lands...) I wish I could find the music sheets anywhere. I just started to learn the tenor recorder and would love to try and play this song
You did an awesome job on this song.... you have a gift of a lovely voice and I look forward to more of your art
Music can lift the soul to places beyond description. Thank you Yolanda for bringing such beauty to the world.

its been years since i first heard it and this is still one of my favorite songs to date
Living so long, of course we desire the sea. It is ever changing and changeless. It calls to me, always.
I want to thank everyone for their encouraging and kind comments. I am overwhelmed :)
That was certainly a beautiful cover. I loved it.
There are fields and hills all around where I live. Yet every few years an empty field and a few trees are chopped down for homes or a new shopping centre, land that has stood empty for all time. It is disappearing.
I was searching for Tolkien-related songs and I've just discovered your channel! Amazing material! Such a lovely voice you've got! ^_^
Oh so lovely!
Absolutely stunning ...
Beautiful song, I love it so much ❤. Wish you all the best.
this is so beautiful
I cannot get over your voice!
Your voice is beautiful! I've never heard anyone sing like that. Brought tears to my eyes. :')
