    On the "how dead are they" scale for Infinity War, no-one (including Loki and Gamora) is deader than Uncle Ben. That man holds the record for being the deadest person to ever die.

      I was really satisfied. I've cared very little for comics, save for Thanos, when I first read Infinity Gauntlet back in 91. I was the only person in the theater to cheer when he appeared in the first Avengers and I was mighty satisfied with his cinematic equivalent. Sadistic and cruel as he is, he's just so damn sympathetic. Such a strange and fun character.

    • @jonathanw1019
      @jonathanw1019 6 лет назад +52

      Oh for sure. Two things that surprised me with the movie were that Loki did not take on the Mephisto role as the silver-tongued devil on the shoulder character, and that death didn't make an appearance or have any part of his motivation.
      I loved the power dynamic between the two in the comics and how death basically used him to achieve her wish of half of life disappearing by suggesting the means to do so, the gauntlet, and then shunning him when his power eclipses that of hers. Honestly, I thought Hela would have an appearance or role as death. I think that would have been a great connection, she is the goddess of death after all, and I think she and him would get along splendidly.

      In other words, this movie is blatantly aimed at comic book nerd Nazis - the “hero” is the social Darwinian Eugenicist. Stupid and evil.

      Yeah, i mean Thanos was by no means the hero of this movie but he was the main character and had the most development. I was like Jay, before this i couldn't give a shit about movie Thanos but through the movie he genuinely made me care about him as a person. He had a lot of very human, emotional moments you don't often or ever really see from your big superhero bad guys.

      That's actually a lot deeper than it sounds. It wasn't just that he didn't think of it; He couldn't think of it. Straying from his path at the end, even though it would've been the actual solution to the problem he set out to solve, would have required he admit to himself that he was wrong, and that he had ravaged the galaxy for nothing but his own satisfaction. Thanos still sees himself as the good guy, after all, and saving everyone would've condemned him in his own eyes, I think.

      This is a factually correct statement, marvel is for kids.
      The fallacy lies in the fact that in addition to it being for kids, it is also for teenagers, fathers, mothers, adults and grandparents. Marvel films are accessible enough to be able to target multiple demographics without excluding others.
      The true success IMO is that the movies are capable of this feat without dropping their quality for any audience, or pandering to any one specific audience too much.

    I actually appreciate that Thanos has the forethought to only go after the Infinity Stones when he knows he can grab more than one in quick succession. He was obviously aware that just having one Infinity Stone was not a guarantee that someone wouldn't just show up and vaporize you, Infinity Stone or not. Ronan got one and the Guardians killed him. Malekith got one and then Thor killed him. Loki had two and still got captured by the Avengers. Thanos succeeded because he was patient enough to wait until he could get three in a row really fast.

    • @GeorgeMonet
      @GeorgeMonet 6 лет назад +25

      That's just stupid. Not getting the infinity stones when you have the chance only increases the chance you will never get a chance to grab it again because the universe is a huge huge place. If someone wanted to grab a stone and run then it would be impossible for them to ever be found again.The only reason Thanos even manages to get all the stones so quickly is because the writers are incompetent idiots who used deus ex machina constantly. Thanos magically knows where every stone is and collects them all without any effort.

      Nah, the Star Trek episode he was talking about was a way more obvious connection. I was reminded of it, too, and I am not even a trekie...the story went that the help the planet waited for arrived in time, so the whole killing was entirely useless in the end. Most of the episode is about exploring the guy who ordered the killing, and if I remember correctly, in the end he starts to doubt himself.

    Thanos couldn't really launch a full-scale war until he knew where all the stones are located and he could grab them all in a blitz attack. Otherwise powerful forces across the universe would take notice and stop him. He had zero leads on soul stone until he captured Nebula, and only then, after evaluating the situation, decided to make a move. The fact that Thor's species basically collapsed, Ego and the Ancient One were murdered, and Avengers fell apart, definitely played the part too. It was a limited window of opportunity and he used it.

    • @VincentStevenStudio
      @VincentStevenStudio 6 лет назад +6

      Geek Owt Lowd I disagree. I enjoy the movie but especially with Tony and Spider-man on Titan. The CGI is horrible. They looked like floating heads in a some sci fi videogame world. Even their suits were CGI. Which is weird because there is bts footage of RDJ wearing a practical torso piece.

      I guess sometimes the faces look a little weird on the cgi suits. I didn't notice Iron Man, but there was a shot of Parker's head with the Iron suit, and Banner's head on the Hulkbuster suit... but that's not a CGI issue... that's a compositing issue. And it's also the least important cgi shots to nail.
      I repeat. The CGI was tremendous. Maybe 2 or 3 shots with composited heads were a bit off... but that's minuscule.

I had seen half of Thor on regular TV once years ago and didn’t even know it was part of the Marvel universe. Even tho I didn’t know some of the characters I understood the plot, the major players, and the reasons the characters were acting the way they were. THAT’S the mark of a good film. To be fair, they had to keep what Thanos was trying to do, but wanted to come up with a different reason for doing it. Which does lead to a few weird bits, as the movie keeps some lines that were built around his comic book motive, but which do not actually fit his movie motive.

    • @TwoTown
      @TwoTown 6 лет назад +7

      BainesMkII I personally prefer his motives in the film to the comic, not that his tragic love with Death isn't interesting in its own right. Still that's interesting, what lines are you referring to?

    • @BainesMkII
      @BainesMkII 6 лет назад +12

      I prefer (now classic) comic book Thanos, but have no issue with movie Thanos, who is a pretty darn good reinterpretation. I was more worried that the movie would use (relatively recent) rebooted origin comic book Thanos, who was clearly rebooted to fit some idea of a more "movie-friendly" version. (The rebooted Thanos origin heavily implied that his conversations with Death were all in his head.)
      As for the lines, two things stood out.
      First, early on the Black Order refer to death being a blessing. That fits comic book Thanos, who loves Death and legitimately sees death as a blessing. (Indeed, comic book Thanos was happy being dead.) This doesn't fit movie Thanos. For movie Thanos, death is more a service, a necessary evil to protect life.
      Second, there is pretty much everything about the cosmic balance in regards to the living outnumbering the dead. In the comic books, it is that ratio of living to dead itself that is the tipping point. Death felt threatened by the ever-growing presence of life, so she resurrected Thanos and sent him out with the task of restoring the balance. For movie Thanos, even though he still practices the simple "kill half" solution, the amount of dead to living realistically doesn't figure into his motives. Any "cosmic balance" for movie Thanos is driven entirely by what he believes to be the amount of life the universe can safely sustain, the number of dead doesn't really fit into it at all.

    • @TwoTown
      @TwoTown 6 лет назад +8

      BainesMkII that's fascinating! I really buy in to the comic Thanos you describe. I felt this was pretty present too in Avengers 1: "to challenge them is to court death", is CLEARLY, especially with the double meaning of "court", meant to evoke the Thanos we know to have a relationship with an embodied Death. To be honest, in the current movie Thanos context, his famous smile now seems a bit out of place

      The only thing that could have made Thanos an even more impressive character is if he turned to ashes after sitting down in his cottage. Flip a coin for everyone, and don't exclude yourself.
      But even without that, the whole movie was Thanos' movie. He got all the traditional hero moments, the quiet Zen-like dream sequences, the tortured past and heroic motivation. He even gets the big sacrifice to gain the macguffin to accomplish his goal. And of course "Thanos will Return" at the end, a line typically reserved for the hero of the marvel movie.
      The only issue in his story is that he killed the Dwarves despite promising to spare them, something that goes completely against the way he's written in all his other scenes (when he promises to spare someone, he does, consistently).
      He's fucking awesome.

  • @JShockBEM
    @JShockBEM 6 лет назад +343

    One complaint I see a lot is "Why did Thanos wait so long to go after the stones?"
    This is an easy one to answer. He needed Odin and Asgard out of the way. Asgard and especially Odin were the biggest threats that we know of to Thanos in the galaxy. In Thor Ragnarok, we even get a great line from Thor when he confronts Loki (disguised as Odin) that says he sees all the realms in chaos, and enemies of Asgard closing in on their territory.
    TL;DR - Thanos waited to gather the stones because Odin and Asgard were still around. Ragnarok solved that problem for him.

    I think that, even as a Last Jedi apologist, the reason that Infinity War's expectation subversion works better than in the Last Jedi comes down to a point that Wisecrack made in a What Went Wrong Episode: The Last Jedi didn't actually subvert expectations. Every one of the subversions that was set up in the first half of the movie by the end of the movie was backtracked. Infinity War did not back down and gut punched in the end just to be sure that even though we, the audience, know that Disney/Marvel are not going to commit to Thanos wiping out half the universe at the end of the movie, we felt the emotional loss in the moment.
    Case and point: Tom Holland and Robert Downey Jr. knocked Spider-Man's death out of the park.

Like when there´s a woman caught in some rubble, and shes reaching out to superman and he just kind of... hovers there for a moment. Like he´s taking his sweet time. Like the situation does´nt really affect him emotionally in any way. Or when Zod throws a truck at him that he casually dodges, and it explodes into the office building behind him. (Of course he does´nt look back.) And always with that same slightly annoyed expression, like he should´nt be bothered with this. It´s like every chance they get to show a bit of humanity, they make a point of making him look like an inhuman god-creature.
      He reminds me of Dr Manhattan, wich is probably what they where going for since Snyder LOVES the Watchmen.

    Here's how I saw Thanos waiting until just now to finally go after the stones. He couldn't perform an all out assault on even one of the stones without another one of the holders of the remaining stones hearing about it, therefore putting up their guard. If he was going to do it himself (like he said at the end of Age of Ultron) instead of using underlings (like he did in the first Avengers and Guardians movies), he needed to come in and hit all of them as fast as possible to prevent foreknowledge of his incoming attacks. But he still didn't know where the Soul Stone was, so he had to hunt down that information first. Which he finally did when he captured Nebula and forced her to tell him that Gamora HAD in fact located the Soul Stone. It was only after acquiring that information that he could begin violently taking the stones from those who held them.
