not to engage in a "who's smarter" ape yelling contest, but robert anton wilson is most definitely the "smartest" here...one of the most "profound" and "truthful" philosophers of the century.
The only author I can read. Sorry it took twelve years to reply, wanted to make sure #i completely understood Schrondinger's Cat Trilology before making that statement, got stuck on Lousewart until Trump became president.🤣
you can just tell RAW knows 100x times more on these subjects than Bill and the other guests. And it's hard for him to hold back from talking the entire time lol.
RAW is always on top of every situation.... right on it. Look up some of his stuff on A. Crowley; he knew more about Crowley, probably, than anyone alive at the time. RAW was beyond the scope of modern knowledge. He sits back and lets everyone else tell their stories and then he sets the record straight. RIP RAW.
Just discovered this. Have been a reader and fan of RAW for over 25 years. Can't even believe he was on politically incorrect and I never knew until now! But i guess it's because i didn't watch much TV back in '96 (I watch none at all now) Thanks so much for posting it!
Kind of reminds me of high school students giggling about drug references... Wish't RAW had more of a chance to speak to the rest. So much potential in this episode, but didn't really go anywhere
For those into RAW and Leary’s work, I recommend checking out 8 Circuit Yoga, a series that synthesizes Leary, Wilson, Jung, and Ram Dass into a fresh framework.
It seems as if no one on the show, including Bill Maher, realizes Robert Anton Wilson was not only friends with Leary for decades but worked with him extensively in a number of different areas, including Leary's 8 levels of consciousness and chaos magick. What a waste of a brilliant mind sitting there (Wilson), and a waste of time. Maher seems to want to ignore the fact Wilson is even there, Michelle Phillips and David Cross act as if they know what they're talking about.
4:38 when bill thanks bob anton wilson for attending at last minuite and fill for tim leary , bob guccione thought maher was thanking him!! big ego check out bob anton wilsons reaction , he looked at the guy and back to maher but didnt say a thing , I guess he knew those kind words were meant for him but this guy guccione might have needed them more.
This is what I heard from a Woodstock attendee: the brown acid wasn't BAD, it was very pure and strong. So strong, that many couldn't handle it, and that's why they often freaked out.
Interesting how time changes everything. It was cool to see the heavily materialistic influenced commercials that have manipulated peoples minds. Digging in the archives of the past reveals alot of "secrets" of how we came to where we are now.
Expanding your mind: Leary's partner at Harvard, Richard Alpert (Ram Dad's), realized that meditation (with awakened Kundalini) expands the mind in a similar way as LSD. Interesting to study both mens' careers and experiences.
brand new movie the cable guy! Robert Anton Wilson opened my eyes to the true nature of the universe. Timothy Leary actually postdated an email to Robert Anton Wilson which Robert recieved after Timothy died. " "One of my favorite Timothy Leary stories was, a month after his death, I got an e-mail from him. It said, "Dear Robert, How are you doing? I'm doing fine over here, but it's not what I expected. Too crowded. Love, Timothy" -Robert Anton Wilson
Leary was not a Harvard 'professor'; he was a researcher and lecturer. Leary actually got out and was kept safe by the Weather Underground, whom he later repaid by informing on to the FBI. Leary, when he was suggesting that everyone try LSD, was asked about the people who might be damaged by it. 'That's Darwin for you,' he compassionately replied. Leary did both good work and also exceptionally sloppy work for which 'sounds cool' seems to have been the standard of evidence.
I like how RAW calls out Bob Guccione Jr in the Pope comment... awesome. @entheoapotheosis - he didn't make a joke of anyone's suicide, he made a joke of Leary's impending death which Leary himself was trying to treat as lightly as possible.
Certainly plenty of bunk LSD made post 60's, but apparently they'd never heard of William Leonard Pickard. It's likely they were referring to ALD-52, commonly referred to as "Sunshine", which is experientially very similar to LSD-25, but supposedly superior in its physiological effects. It seems not to have been made "commercially available" post-60's in the same way that LSD-25 certainly has. Though it's true that lulls in production DO occur.
RAW on another level as usual. Also, culture seemed much more innocent back then, before 9/11. It really changed the course of history, ushering this era of paranoia and conspiracy suspicion we currently live in.
Bill Maher has changed his mind on psychedelics and even had his own rant about how psychedelics can cause positive behavioral changes in people. He's also wrong in saying that LSD no longer exists. It does but it can be a bit hard to find because a lot of the people selling "acid" nowadays are actually selling research chemicals.
Yeah, Spin Bob, showed some stupidity a few times, especially when he said that alcohol is not addictive. If he didn't have that English accent he would've been laughed off the stage.
For some reason this comment reminded me of a quote an old friend used to like to repeat: "They should ban idiots, not drugs." Saint Hofmann was not a Company man, by the way. Leary on the other hand...
Maher is completely wrong about the formula disappearing. The laboratory formula was printed in the Anarchist's Cookbook, and I'm sure the formula is not difficult to obtain. But, one must know a lot about chemistry to make it. Any 2nd year chemistry student could make it.
Do not despair, the times they are a changin' (again). The sun has been there shining the whole time, it just gets obscured by clouds that occasionally part to let it shine on down and they have begun to part again. Patience...
Everyone shut up and let Robert Anton Wilson talk, good lord. This is really weird to watch, because everyone seems to be like "Who is this guy?" and yet RAW clearly knows more (about Leary and everything else) than all the other guests combined!
Who the hell are ben and teller? Do you mean Penn and Teller? If so, you're right: These old Comedy Central commercials ARE narrated by Penn Jillette of Penn and Teller.
Acid is such a fun drug.... there is this whole new way of life and philosophy while on it. It's like "forbidden fun", you know you aren't supposed to do it but it's fun and it just feels so right. It brings so much fun in life. It even comes on colorful blotters.... like a ticket for a ride :D LSD is a funny joke on life as you know it, and by hearing this joke you become enlightened x) You would NEVER be able to understand the culture if you had never taken it.
I came here for Robert Anton Wilson looking for some intellectualism but ended up being disappointed. If you are looking for something serious don't waste your time on this. Other than that great video
maybe afterwards, but during them it's hell... you sure you've experienced a legit bad trip, and not just a difficult trip? i mean, i do see how you could like how it affects you afterwards, but for me, bad trips are just too awful and they usually mess me up for a few days after. it takes a while for me to appreciate them. i still find that i learn a lot on good trips too. i'm introverted to begin with, so psychedelics work well for me. i only have bad trips when i'm in a bad mental state
@@chillingcat5033 you probably would have had a different answer 9 years ago, but now with hindsight and just being in a different mindset, i dont think i really learned from the bad trips. i think if anything they just fucked me up more and made it harder to get my mental health back on track. i just felt like it opened up doors that worsened my anxiety and those doors never really closed, i just got better at dealing with anxiety. im not against psychedelics tho. everyone is different and whenever the opportunity comes up (which isn't often these days) i will usually take a trip. i haven't done lsd in a long time and am on the fence on using it since it's hard to know if you're getting legit lsd and not just a research chem that mimics it well. but anytime im offered shrooms i tend to take them still. i basically do psychedelics once or twice a year at most these days.
what horrible way of ending that show. pan away and up, slowly, throw the logos up, credits, interrupt the conversation with a "well goodbye". done. WHAT? ...
Bill was wrong here, then and today. Of course Acid is still around, it just blends in with all the other psychedelic chemicals that can also be put on blotters. Unless you know the source, it could be anything on that paper.
Well put!---the reaction to it was/is stupid, and it has no business being on Schedule 1. But a smart drugs dealer and LSD user insisted to me that yes, in some individuals, a single dose of too high a size & a bad set could bring out latent insanity---and that to claim that this were 'not LDS's fault' is to ignore the fact that latent insanity can last an innocuous lifetime. Leary's fatal flaw, of which Hunter Thompson wrote: he believed in religious nonsense, some cosmic purpose to it all.
David Cross and Robert Anton Wilson on the same show. Seems a mite surreal. :)
not to engage in a "who's smarter" ape yelling contest, but robert anton wilson is most definitely the "smartest" here...one of the most "profound" and "truthful" philosophers of the century.
robert anton wilson, one of my favorite writers

Robert Anton Wilsons comment on being clean off acid for two days is classic. :)

RAW was beyond the scope of modern knowledge. He sits back and lets everyone else tell their stories and then he sets the record straight. RIP RAW.
RAW is the only one with insight here. Praise bob
Just discovered this. Have been a reader and fan of RAW for over 25 years. Can't even believe he was on politically incorrect and I never knew until now! But i guess it's because i didn't watch much TV back in '96 (I watch none at all now) Thanks so much for posting it!

RAW would have been a great guest on Joe Rogan Experience.
we need to get joe into him and eating hotdogs sans buns
I think he would blow joe's mind away
Damn, i love seeing all these commercials from years ago. It's like taking a time machine back to the 90's.
For those into RAW and Leary’s work, I recommend checking out 8 Circuit Yoga, a series that synthesizes Leary, Wilson, Jung, and Ram Dass into a fresh framework.
Filmed on 23rd uploaded 12 years later on the 23rd

These old school commercials are almost as intriguing as the discussion on the show. Things don't change much.
This is AMAZING, commercials and all...thank you SO much!!!
:')

You misunderstood. He is thanking Bob G. RAW and Leary had been a double act of 'Standup Philosophers' touring the US before Tim's demise
They gave him the test that he invented...brilliant.
This is what I heard from a Woodstock attendee: the brown acid wasn't BAD, it was very pure and strong. So strong, that many couldn't handle it, and that's why they often freaked out.
2024 and this is still top shelf content. Perhaps even more so?
Pen Jillette is the Comedy Central commercial voice!
Five years ago today. I still miss him constantly.
Interesting how time changes everything.
It was cool to see the heavily materialistic influenced commercials that have manipulated peoples minds.
Digging in the archives of the past reveals alot of "secrets" of how we came to where we are now.
Even stranger is the complicity involved in ol’ Michelle’s family . McKenzie Philips says don’t forget
“The Mommas and The Poppas did LSD everyday on the beach in the Caribbean…”
And John Phillips was having sex with his daughter
Bill Maher is actually wrong about LSD not existing anymore.
Indeed, Leary was very brave. When He initially "advocated" LSD, It was not a controlled substance.
cia and leary
Bill Maher needs to do more stuff like this!
The commercials are too far out for me -- the Microsoft one especially.
I love when they show the comcentral.com website. It's like a shitty fanpage by today's standards!
A love letter to leary's involvement in the cyberpunk movement of the early 90s.
Expanding your mind: Leary's partner at Harvard, Richard Alpert (Ram Dad's), realized that meditation (with awakened Kundalini) expands the mind in a similar way as LSD.

It is easy to idolize people. All of what you said is perfectly in line with Leary's personal philosophy. Nobody is perfect to anybody.

I really wanted to hear Wilson's answer to the question at the end..
Look at the 90's! They have no idea whatsoever what is coming their way.

Jesus christ...I actually remember some of these commercials despite not seeing them in damn near 20 years. This feels weird...
Good for you. I'm glad to see that someone has an understanding of what life has to offer.
In Lak'ech
awesome upload - EVERYONE should leave the ads in. seriously, it's cool to watch ads from the 90s.
This is a cult classic gem 💎
the commercials are priceless
thanks for keeping the ads in between segments. Interesting.
Thank you for this.
Thank you for posting this!
Bill Maher suggesting lsd is a gateway drug to heroine is dumb af. RAW brilliant as always.
Tune in,turn on and drop out.
Penn Jilette was their announcer, haha !
Anybody else watch all the commercials?
Also, I agree with the previous commenter. Though I may not have seen a lot of TV in the nineties, I do remember some of those old ads. What a trip.

I had no fucking idea raw was on maher. Goddamnit fnord the chords are dissonant and I must protect my goddess.
Thanks for sharing this!
OMG, we had one of those Infiniti J30's when I was growing up...That thing used to be on the cutting edge...Oh, the 90's.
the penny hardaway commercial brought back a lot of memories...
Everyone shut up and let Robert Anton Wilson talk, good lord. This is really weird to watch, because everyone seems to be like "Who is this guy?" and yet RAW clearly knows more (about Leary and everything else) than all the other guests combined!
LOVE the ads !!
thanks for posting
Timothy Francis Leary (October 22, 1920 - May 31, 1996)
26:40 I forgot we had internet back then.
Man in the early 90s when this was made there was lots of real acid. Oh do I long for those days again.
you are so right
Sooo great!
Who the hell are ben and teller? Do you mean Penn and Teller? If so, you're right: These old Comedy Central commercials ARE narrated by Penn Jillette of Penn and Teller.
David Cross looks like Hunter S. Thompson in this video
Them commercials.
6 years actually. January 11, 2007

Well, we certainly got a lot of it in UK in the 60's !!
makes me crave a Golden Apple.

LSD is still around altough alot of it is research chemicals and analogs of lsd it is still around. humanity needs it LOVE N LIGHT~ALL GOOD

Yep!
aired on 5/23 :)
i wonder if this would be allowed on tv these days..
Hmm, I have confused it with another drug. It appears you are correct.
I remember from college that there still was "real acid".
The doses probably aren't as big as they used to be. But at $1 per dose that is irrelevant.
Wow... Robert is so above them all. They have hard time relating .
18:00 Vintage 1996 Internet usage
18:54 Penn Jillette plugs the vintage Comedy Central website
what horrible way of ending that show. pan away and up, slowly, throw the logos up, credits, interrupt the conversation with a "well goodbye". done. WHAT? ...
Michelle Phillips is such a hoot! And very beautiful.
robert anton wilson is so wise
sometime between 1992 and 1996 i believe in 1997 this show moved from comedy central to abc
Bill was wrong here, then and today. Of course Acid is still around, it just blends in with all the other psychedelic chemicals that can also be put on blotters. Unless you know the source, it could be anything on that paper.
8 days after this aired was when Timothy Leary died.
At some point ALL have never taken it..... ?????
Robert Wilson is so humourus, i did not know that. Not on public television, anyways.
That pissed me off too
Because they're just as interesting historically as Politically Incorrect.
Well put!---the reaction to it was/is stupid, and it has no business being on Schedule 1.

1969-2022 Eris is dead now and forever.
As is the spirit of Robert Anton Wilson.
