I have learned so much from Julie and I come back and rewatch her videos and learn more everytime. I can never hear what she is saying while drying which is do funny and I know Julie realizes this. I have done this too in video making dog food, talk while blending something. This is my favorite poodle person on RUclips. Now see that ear technique, I keep forgetting to try that, thanks Julie!
Wow!! My wife is a groomer and bathe her dogs for her. And she wanted me to watch a video on fluff drying, and let me say that I am glad I chose to view this one. Thank you for putting up this video.
I truly love these videos. Please continue to post for us newbies! Im 20 years old and i work at Petco. I’ve been certified through them for a little over a year. we have a lot of poodles, bichons, yorkies, and shih tzus. I’ve slowly become the go to for poodles and bichons and I feel like I do a good job but your videos have helped me tremendously. One day I hope to have my own shop and be able to educate new groomers like you do!
Hi, I know this comment is pretty old, but I'm curious on your experience and what you're doing with grooming today? I'm 22 and I've been grooming for 3 years now. I would love to work as a groomer (I've had a few clients at home her and there) and just wanted to know how it's like for you in Petco/wherever you are now if you are still in the grooming profession. Thanks in advance, just in case you see this and respond :) ♡
Hi Julie it’s me again, just wanted to let you know that I have clipped my toy poodle f,f,t just as you did. I. Video, it turned out great then I bathed and fluffed dried as you did, can’t believe the difference, I am so thankful for your videos next step is the comb clip. Thanks again, your dog is beautiful ❤love from Australia
So educational. I didn't know any of this. My poodle is 6 years old and now after watching this I will maintain her coat more regularly and actually spend less money at the groomer. She hates the commotion of the whining, barking in the assembly line groomers. She is more calm when I pick her up at a private or one on one type of groomer establishment.
Thanks for the video it was very informative. After 35 years of showing and grooming Yorkies I acquired a poodle and I'm in the process of learning how to groom her properly. Just recently purchased a forced air dryer with variable speed/heat. I have to keep the force down as low as it will go otherwise I'll blow my 4 pound poodle off the table. Love your poodle decal on your headset.
B Cobler I would love for you to upload videos on your Yorkie grooming for show! There are so many poodle videos but it’s hard for me to find good yorkie grooming videos! I have both breeds too lol
CHloE748 , Sorry , at this time I do not have any Yorkies to demo grooming on. If you are interested in show grooming I would suggest going to as many dog shows as you can. Go to the grooming area and watch the different handlers groom their dog you can pick up a lot just by watching.
Love your care for her with the wonderful cushion for her to stand on. Does anyone else notice how that dryer went from one side of the room to the other. Yeah, me either. They move as one. lol She don't even look at the dyer, she just bumps it with her elbow and its perfect. The Dryer is trained too. lol
What a Gorgeous Poodle, my favorite dog breed. I’ve had a Toy and 2 Minis, would love a standard, but the knots are maddening, so I stick with the Poodle size I can take care of the best. They also need a lot of exercise and I don’t think I could keep up with a standard, but they are as brilliant as they are beautiful (All 3 Sizes) and very affectionate too.
Thankyou so much for doing this video! I'm a total newbie attempting to groom my two boys and haven't been able to get the curl out- can't wait to try this! Can you please list the types of brushes you used? I had a hard time catching the types and brands... And would love any info on shampoo and products you've used, I'm sure that probably makes a difference, just like human hair? Thankyou in advance! Can't wait to watch more of these videos!!
What the brand of your stand dryer.? I couldn't hear. I have a standard poodle, too, so this video is very informative. I am sure Jupiter will appreciate that I have found a new way for faster drying and removing his curls.
What an awesome video, thanks so much for sharing! I only have a regular hair dryer for my poodle but I almost always groom her myself. Would it be worth investing in a force dryer? Or what are other techniques to avoid this purchase.... Such as drying with hair dryer without heat? Thank you :)
If I may, please allow me to explain how much time I save by doing that DREADED and FEARED thing called 'cage drying'. I only wish someone had told me about it many years ago when I was spending five to six hours hand-drying a champion Afghan Hound in a huge 'specials' coat. First of all, let me go on record by saying that I am not a huge fan of cage drying per se, although it is excellent for some breeds. When I have my poodle all freshly bathed and ready to be dried, this is how I save time: I pat the coat with clean, white, fluffy bath towels, and I try to remove as much water from the coat as possible. Do NOT rub the coat; pat and squeeze only. I place two or three layers of clean, white, fully towels on the metal floor of a large, wire crate. Once the dog is inside, I cover the entire crate with an Egyptian cotton sheet----although I feel certain a cotton/blend sheet from Dollar General would yield the same results. I place a cage dryer on the cage and set the volume at the lowest setting but with a 'medium' blower speed. I return to check the dog's status every 15 minutes. This method will work for each and every poodle.....but no TWO will achieve the same results. One coat might take only 35 minutes while another might take an hour. The 'key' is knowing WHEN to remove the dog from the crate and start drying it by hand. By trial and error, you will quickly learns how much time each individual dog requires before you crank up the floor-mounted dryer and finish the job. What we are attempting to do here is achieve the very SAME result as having spent 3-5 hours hand-drying a coat but letting the cage dryer do most of the work for us. I found I could easily cut 3+ hours off my hand-drying procedure by doing it this way. Time equals money, so you can see how having a 'spare' four hours in a day works for every dog groomer on the planet. Try this method just ONE time and see if it works for you.
If you want the coat properly prepped you cannot cage dry it all the way, however you can put them in the cage dryer for a little bit and then pull them out to finish them by hand :-)
We need more videos! I am planning on getting a poodle puppy for service work and want to groom him myself. Can you do a puppy cut for us? And how to trim ears and topknots?
For a single mom not in the grooming profession just wanting to do her own grooming… which dryers would you recommend for at home use. I have a hand held regular dryer but what can I use for the forced dry
I groom all types of dogs not show dogs, most are good, and yes some don't behave for a lot of things not just dryers. as a groomer we must handle all types of temperaments. Perhaps the crate dryer should be utilized more for difficult dogs.Obviously I'm not going to video a difficult dog as you can imagine the hateful comments I would get!
Love, love, LOVE your videos! My question is- do you use conditioner and or finishing spray on Poodles? Why or why not? Thanks so much from a poodle newbie!☺️
Do you happen to have any links for the slicker brushes you are using. I am just starting to groom my dogs on my own because they are not doing great with other groomers. Much appreciated for your videos!
Julie l have a White Toy Poodle and would love to be able to groom him as well as you do. I use a force dryer But l think l also need to use my normal Hair dryer as well maybe the heat in my normal hair dryer may help me. My little Poodle doesn’t mind me grooming him but he never looks like your Poodle when finished. He does have a thick coat which may make it a little difficult but not sure if it would or not. Thanks for all your videos they have helped me so much.
Hi Julie, this video is very helpful. I’ve watched it many times to learn how to dry Bailey and he never comes out as good as when you groom him. lol I was wondering what table you would recommend. Mine isn’t working that great - it’s too small.
I'm just a new, at home groomer with a standard poodle puppy. Watching your confidence during your videos really helps me to feel I can do this too. My silver beige Olive and I thank you. I have a question though... my little Olive is 5 months old now, and I've been shaving her face and feet since she was about 1 month old, so she's very good about letting me do it.... but her curls are coming in very slowly. I mean, some of her hair is just beginning to kind of tightly wave, but no curling yet. It's getting pretty long though, and I'm not really sure when I should attempt to cut her body, or even what poodle cut would look good on her with mostly straight hair. Do you have any suggestions? I've been putting this off because I really just don't know. Her hair does get fluffy, but there isn't enough coil to give it a sturdy fluffy look. Not sure about terminology, so hopefully this makes some sense. THANKS AGAIN! 🐩🐩🐩
제민I am you can start trimming it anytime, the more you trim it the better the coat quality will be. There are a number of great trims but the sporting clip is very popular among my clients
@@juliewilkinsgrooming oooh, I didn't know that bit about trimming giving the coat better quality! I ended up trimming her down all over minus the head and tail. When I got to the head I couldn't bear to get rid of any of the cute shaggyness of it, so it's virtually untouched on the topknot and ears. I just kinda tried to blend it into the shorter hair on her neck. I tried to give her leg poms, but I started on the back feet and they looked like I used a butcher knife. The front poms are cute, but I hardly touched them. I just didn't realize how different and difficult it would be to do legit good looking poms for the first time hahaha... you make these things look way too easy! Fortunately I've got my own little fluffy puppy canvas for trial and error. Also, this experience made me realize just how important it is to perfect my scissoring technique. Thanks for your reply 😊😊😊
It was hard to hear what type of brushes and stand dryer you use. Also what shampoo and conditioner to use if you can recommend. I have standard Black with double coat and white with Colton coat. So need help on which brushes and shampoo best to use.
I like to use a slicker brush for this length of coat my favorite is the All Systems, but you can also use the Artero and if you can get a hold of a Universal slicker those are great as well :-)
Thank you for this video! I know this is four years ago but recently have had to start grooming my own 12lb schnoodle because she's reactive and most of the groomers in my area don't want to take her. I've been able to mostly get the fluff drying down, however - we live in a humid area and eventually her coat starts to curl fairly quickly (within a few days). When she was younger (and not so reactive), she did have a fantastic groom where her coat stayed straight for almost a month. Do you think it was a product sprayed on to keep it straight for so long or mostly just the technique of the drying? Thank you in advance for any insight!
It could be, you could try using some fluff out or a similar product. Or finish the drying with a handheld human dryer with some heat just to set the coat, that’s what we do with the show dogs.……
Jennifer Laura you do need some heat to get the finish to hold, it will not take the dogs breath away, just like it will not take your breath away, stand and hand dryers are different than using a heated crate dryer....
Could you tell me what cut you have the dog in and roughly the length of the coat so I know what to ask for when I take mine to the groomers I never know what to get and always just ask for a tidy up
I have a red male standard an when I blow his coat out it’s plush but his back still is wavy an I use a slicker and dryer. I don’t know what I’m doing wrong!
Julie Wilkins I have a time lapse video of me grooming him on my channel if you wanna check it out I’m thinking it may be his coat because it’s so short? We get him a summer cut in the summer (4 blade on the body & 30 blade with an A comb on the ears)
Thank you for this video! If the dog has longer coat, like a second puppy for instance, would you work the dryer any dfferently to avoid tangles? (Having watched your video I see that I am doing it all wrong: I’m going about it as if though I’m blow drying my own hair😅😅😅) Any tips for drying a longer coat would be appreciated!🙏
I would love to know do you pre clip then bath and dry or do you bath and dry then clip hope you read this as it is important to me I have a toy poodle. Love from Australia ❤️🦋
Unless the dog is horribly overgrown I do my clipper and scissor work after the bath. Your blades will last a lot longer if used on clean hair and you’re finish is better
Julie Wilkins thank you for that actually I did just that throughly brushed then bathed and dried for the first time like that wow it does make a difference, I have a toy poodle about one inch to big, but a beauty.❤️🦋
This is probably a stupid question but don’t you worry about killing the curl for good? Like with people hair too much brushing and heat ruins the hair and will make it straight and damaged?
Jessy N have you tried the eye wipes and supplements? Also finding the cause of the tearing is important too! Some dogs tear because of allergies ( diet or environmental) and others because of physical irritants i.e. hair in the eyes ECT. And something I have hear regarding the ph of the dogs body. Hope this helps
I wouldn’t say she didn’t mind at all she was lip licking and shaking off her anxiety a lot at the start, maybe she gets used to it after a couple of minutes but she definitely didn’t seem to be happy about it GOTTA BE DONE THOUGH RIGHT I know
The poodle looks amazing with that smooth coat, I have a "Miniature Apricot Poodle," and I have never dried him before grooming him. He is only a year old. Can I use a hairdryer? I am really interested in learning how to achieve this look. (Not interested in shaving his face through)
SO ITS TOO LOUD FOR THE LADY BUT NOT TOO LOUD FOR HER POOR DOGS THAT DO HAVE 7 TIMES THE HEARING POWER ???!!!!!????!! The dog coat looks beautiful but I also think the dog may be deaf by now. It's torture !
I click here to learn more about going a better groom on my dog. But I can say I’d never put my dog through this. Just the length of time, geez. Pretty unfair and ridiculous.
There is simpler hair cuts a doggie can get that don’t require such careful fluffing. But a dog getting bathed and groomed is much healthier for them and their coats.
I can tell you as a bather we basically do this process for every single dog (at least the billion doodles we have as clients) that gets groomed to varying degrees. We teach our dogs to be calm for the drier and give breaks as needed at our salon.
You should always wear hearing protection. The accumulation over the years of noise will Definetly affect your hearing. Imagine 30 years of this. It's not too loud it is the amount of it.

She enjoyed the fluffing but I don’t know how much she will enjoy whenever they shave her lol

They are probably either the all systems slicker or universal slicker, you can’t get the universals anymore :-(

I’ll have to do another video down the road with a voice over :-) unfortunately I’m not super tech savvy haha
Is it possible to use a normal hair dry ( like the ones you use on your own hair ) when drying the dog? And how often should bathe your poodle?
yes, absolutely, get the dog as dry as possible with the force, then do your finish drying with the hand dryer
Do you brush and untangle before the bath?
Always a good idea to prep the coat before they go in the tub :-)
It would be a great video if we could hear what u were saying but it was impossible with the dryer on
Sorry about that :-) I guess hard to hear with a force dryer running
Great video...I don't know about the hot dryer though..my instructor told me the heat can take the dog's breath away.
Jennifer Laura you do need some heat to get the finish to hold, it will not take the dogs breath away, just like it will not take your breath away, stand and hand dryers are different than using a heated crate dryer....

I can't hear a thing with the dryer on
what spray do you use before drying? or do you not use one?
I like to use EZ Glide or Quicker Slicker
Awe she wants your attention 🥰
Julie what are the brushes you use with the standing dryer finer slickerones?
I like to use an all systems slicker brush :-)
What a good girl!
If the dog had a longer coat I would hold the force dryer further away so I don’t snarl it, and probably do more finish work with the stand dryer :-)
Can someone tell me how long this 'fluffed' look lasts for, once it's done? Few days? Week?
depends on how thoroughly you do it, humidity, rain etc.....
I'm watching on 2022 can you please tell me what kind of dryer are you using?
Me
Too!

EZ Groom Crystal White :-)
@@juliewilkinsgrooming thank you
Do you have to dry and fluff every dog hmm im wondering about my Bernese mountain dog he has curly hair
You would dry it a little differently, more with the force dryer with the nozzle taken off at the end you could also crate dry for a bit :-)
She stands so pretty
I would love to know do you pre clip then bath and dry or do you bath and dry then clip hope you read this as it is important to me I have a toy poodle. Love from Australia ❤️🦋
Unless the dog is horribly overgrown I do my clipper and scissor work after the bath. Your blades will last a lot longer if used on clean hair and you’re finish is better
Julie Wilkins thank you for that actually I did just that throughly brushed then bathed and dried for the first time like that wow it does make a difference, I have a toy poodle about one inch to big, but a beauty.❤️🦋
What brand is the stand dryer and where to purchase?
It is a Speedy stand dryer :-)
www.speedydryer.com/standdryers.html
Oh my gosh she’s beautiful
How long does the fluff normally last?
Depends on humidity in the air, and if the dog gets wet or not :-)
How do you keep them from getting red yeast ??? She has absolutely no stains
It's Bigz good diet, clean ears......
where can i order that big dryer that swivels
It is a speedy dryer from rapid electric :-)
Thanks for your reply Julie🐩
How did you do the ears?
I bevel the bottoms of them with curved shears :-)
What kind of brush are you using? And where can I find it?
I like the All systems slicker brush
Would you ever do a teddy cut? Just to show us? Pleaseeee
Great idea :-)
What kind of brushes were used?
All systems and universal
I use my hair cryer on cool is that ok
Great instruction
This is probably a stupid question but don’t you worry about killing the curl for good? Like with people hair too much brushing and heat ruins the hair and will make it straight and damaged?
The difference is people style their hair every day. A standard is usually only groomed once every 2 to 3 months. 😊
CHloE748 you cannot kill the curl.....
what should I do if I find a sebaceous cysts?
Tell the owner and be careful brushing and combing around it.
What kind of dryer is that?
Ez dry from EZ groom :-)
Please Julie, any advise comercial product to keep Tear Stain Free on white poodle? Many Thanks in advance. 🐩
Great Question, Thank you for sharing this information.
I use Tylan powder when necessary, but non of my dogs tear at the moment.....
I wouldn’t say she didn’t mind at all she was lip licking and shaking off her anxiety a lot at the start, maybe she gets used to it after a couple of minutes but she definitely didn’t seem to be happy about it GOTTA BE DONE THOUGH RIGHT I know
and she is yawning all the time, you forgot to say
What is that dryer called ? ƯHoww much is it
That is an EZ Dry 111 force dryer from EZ Groom and a Speedy stand dryer :-)
Too long that heavy duty dryer.
Well behaved dog!
That dogs adorable
Sorry, can't understand a word with the dryer on.... maybe warn people about brush burn?
What dryer is this ?
It is an EZ Dry III :-)
What is the name of the dryer?
michelle mclaughlin Ez Dry 3 :-)
The poodle looks amazing with that smooth coat, I have a "Miniature Apricot Poodle," and I have never dried him before grooming him. He is only a year old. Can I use a hairdryer? I am really interested in learning how to achieve this look. (Not interested in shaving his face through)
Laurie Jean Kase why don’t you shave his face?
@@CHloE748 , I don't like the look of the face shaved, Personally.
Yes you can use a hair dryer it just takes longer and won't be as straight
You can use a hand dryer, it will take a lot longer though, and the high heat may dry/damage his coat over time....
TMI about the noise
SO ITS TOO LOUD FOR THE LADY BUT NOT TOO LOUD FOR HER POOR DOGS THAT DO HAVE 7 TIMES THE HEARING POWER ???!!!!!????!! The dog coat looks beautiful but I also think the dog may be deaf by now. It's torture !
This is exactly why I show in the video how to pack cotton in the dogs ears for the dryer :-)
🌹
She is beautiful.....
Thank you so much!
If only she took so much hair of her own STRANGE hair
This Poodle hopefully gets groomed regularly, judging by this video I would assume.
At 10:56, I think someone wants a potty break.
I click here to learn more about going a better groom on my dog. But I can say I’d never put my dog through this. Just the length of time, geez. Pretty unfair and ridiculous.
Yeah, just keep your poor dog matted and in pain instead
There is simpler hair cuts a doggie can get that don’t require such careful fluffing. But a dog getting bathed and groomed is much healthier for them and their coats.
I can tell you as a bather we basically do this process for every single dog (at least the billion doodles we have as clients) that gets groomed to varying degrees. We teach our dogs to be calm for the drier and give breaks as needed at our salon.
Almost a jet engine to dry the poor dog if you have to wear ear protection it’s too loud 👎
Your obviously not a groomer.
I loved how she talked while using the darn thing and you couldn't hear what she was saying.
You should always wear hearing protection. The accumulation over the years of noise will Definetly affect your hearing. Imagine 30 years of this. It's not too loud it is the amount of it.
