    If someone told you he saw a 800HP Cummins diesel out racing on the street about 25 years ago, people would have said yeah, right. These two characters put one together making 1600hp plus. Then they build an every day driver 800hp truck that should exceed a stock truck fuel mileage and outrun those little Hondas. Plus you can drive it for many years to come. Isn't this everyones dream truck?

(Bought this truck with out a transmission) in the meantime I’ve pulled the motor that has 311,539 miles on it and slowly rebuilding it. Why not since the transmission is not in it. Fix all the leaks and go through it. I have to buy parts anyways so it’s definitely motivated me to purchase the parts from Power Driven Diesel. I’ve always wanted one but of course money talks so I will nickel and dime it tell it’s on the road!!!!!!

    • @pddofficial
      @pddofficial  4 года назад +4

      Billet sells part!!! Technically cast should be slightly more porous so should weigh ever so slightly less if all else is the same. Some believe billet parts have more material uniformity thus allowing the design to incorporate tighter tolerances and thinner/lighter blades without the fear of a material inconsistency causing a premature failure.

  • @matthewhall9530

    Maintenance and with stock location trucks like power strokes and the dramas series engines packaging can be an issue as well since the turbo is mounted on top of the motor in the valley fitting an external gate in there could be a pain. Unless you go dual gates and put one in each up pipe off the manifold and then there’s two of them to have to maintain.

    An S475 should have been enough to get you to 800rwhp I would think and I would expect it to have better response and more torque which would be nice in a street truck. Of course saying you have an 88 under the hood is so much cooler. :-)

    • @pddofficial
      @pddofficial  4 года назад

      Although the 88 is overkill, a Borg-built 475 has never come close to 800 rwhp on our dyno on a 12v Cummins. We generally see 7 RWHP per LB of air the turbo moves on the compressor map with a moderately built 12V Cummins on PDD's dyno. That means a box 475 would do 700 HP. That's not to say a purpose built highly modified 12V with big fuel system and all the best internal parts couldn't be pushed with a custom built 475 to barely tickle 800 HP, we've just never seen it. Most highly modified 12v powered vehicles that run on the dyno don't run a 475 turbo if they have the myriad of other upgrades to prep them for big power, they generally want big power when building an engine of that caliber and therefore never choose a bigger/badder turbo capable of 1000+ HP.

  • @Parents_of_Twins
    @Parents_of_Twins 4 года назад

    The better question is why wouldn't you want compound turbos especially on a street truck? I can sort of understand wanting a large single on a drag truck. Even there though all that time waiting for spool up. I like the supercharged compound turbo setups on diesels. No black smoke and tons of torque down low and no lag. Still don't quite understand why running a diesel rich (black smoke) gives more power. How much of a horsepower gain do you see when going from no smoke to black smoke on a performance engine? Say going from 17:1 to 15:1 AFR.

    • @RadDadisRad
      @RadDadisRad 4 года назад

      Diesels rely on auto detonation. Going extra rich will just mean more black smoke. The black smoke you see is the tune up trying to add volume to the exhaust and help spin it up. More air means more fuel. More of both means higher dynamic compression which means more heat. Get too much heat and you melt stuff so they richen it up to use the unburned fuel to pull heat from the cylinder and go out the exhaust.

    • @pddofficial
      @pddofficial  4 года назад

      There's a 690 rwhp 12v street truck at the shop with PDD's ultimate towing compound setup. The smoke threshold occurs right around the 525 to 550 RWHP mark on the dyno. Meaning, it's clean when the fueling is cut down with AFC LIVE to limit max power around 500 RWHP. If fueling is turned up further, visible haze starts to come from the tail pipe around 525 HP with heavy smoke from 580 thru 690 HP. So to answer your question, on a 500 ish HP compound turbo truck with an otherwise stock 12v engine, you can pick up an additional 150+ HP going from no smoke at 22:1 to heavy black smoke at say 12:1.
      On a performance engine, the gains are even larger: The Junker Drag Truck cleans up to a fairly light haze around the 625 RWHP mark with the fuel limited to the low 400 cc range. Turning up the pump to the full 650 cc's picks up an additional 300 RWHP and fairly heavy smoke from the hood stack.

    • @Parents_of_Twins
      @Parents_of_Twins 4 года назад

      @@pddofficial That is very interesting. What about when adding nitrous? I'm trying to understand why adding more fuel on a diesel adds power. On a gasoline engine running rich causes a decrease in power, actually found a video showing someone changing the AFR and as he goes from 12:1 to 13:1 to 14:1 he gains power. Some danger in running too lean on a gasoline I don't know if diesels are like that or not I've heard no but not from an expert. I find this very interesting. Wish you guys were closer of course then I would be in person bugging you all about this stuff but that probably wouldn't work :), although I am good at turning wrenches. I do very much appreciate you all taking the time to answer these questions. Thank you very much. I'm a big fan of engines, horsepower, and efficiency. Once again thank you very much for answering my many questions.

    • @dylanneal6363
      @dylanneal6363 4 года назад

      On a diesel you dont want no smoke. You want a light haze after the turbo/turbos spool. That means you have plenty of fuel for your setup and not too much.
