Personally I think the finished look was both fierce AND a mess. Which feels very HLP? That sounds like the bitchiest dig, but I mean it as more of a fond observation. I feel like you have an affinity for evocative authenticity--even when it's incongruous. Maybe _especially_ when it's incongruous. "Flawless" isn't generally your scene. You want your blush to look like a heat rash. You want your hair to look wild. Why _shouldn't_ you want your vampy, editorial makeup to look like you applied it while pre-drinking for a club night, in a small bathroom with a florescent light and a cracked sink, while balancing a strong-ass jack & coke on the soap dish?
    Again, not a dig.
I don't always vibe with your makeup, but I do always vibe with the fact that what you want from your makeup is for it to evoke a feeling--and usually one that's delicious in its specificity.

This is such a brilliant idea! I vote for you to do an unstructured “series” where you pull ads from different eras to recreate and maybe put a HLP twist on it.
-Also-as you were looking through your collection I found myself yelling “use a black base Hannah!!”…I like to pretend I’m artistic and creative when really I’m just gaudy. Anyway, this was such an interesting video. ❤️‍🔥 loved.

Your process reminded me of a warmup exercise I did in an art class once! We were given five minutes to quickly draw an object where we could look at it as much as we want, and then the instructor put the it away and we had another five minutes to draw the object from memory. Pretty much without fail our second drawings were all significantly better than the first! I suppose instead of duping the vibes we were drawing the vibes.

Chanel artists tend to use few products in precise ways; from looking at the picture, they most likely started with an eyeliner that's a dark plum or every black, sketching out a thick triangle on the outer corner of the eye and following the contours of the crease with that same liner all the way into the upper inner corner of the eye/inner eyebrow. Lower lashline is probably also lined, including the waterline. Blend the edges lightly being cautious not to overblend. There might be a wash of a dark matte in the outer corner and used to blend the whole shape that was sketched out with the liner. Inner half of the eye seems to be a satin or one of the Chanel cream shadows, there's no glitter to it at all. The eyebrows are also not brushed up, but sideways, so the hair flows with the shape of the brow. Good luck with your future attempts!

I had these thoughts, too! Also I felt initial colors she laid down were much too warm and rusty, whereas the source material looks more cool toned black plum rather than wine.. Actually more purple than burgundy

    • @TheJonsiko
      @TheJonsiko 2 года назад +5

@Morgan Baldwin Miller yeah to be fair if the first shade she used was from the Lila palette, iirc that's a bit of a duochrome so it can be deceptive in the pan. Regardless, I hope Hannah tries to recreate this again!

Very fun project but yes, the look dupe was a disaster. I love the idea of doing a series like this, though, where you just play around and try to duplicate a look with stuff you have! And I kind of love the fact that it's okay for it to fail, too. Like makeup is just face art and it's allowed to be fun and messy and not work out like you want sometimes.
Also like you said, the look itself isn't a fail! Just recreating the look of the ad.

Was I the only one who thought “Palmer girl” while looking at the model? (You know, Robert Palmer-look for the “Addicted to Love” official video.) Hannah, I think the shiny shadow you put on last looked more like bits of white on camera than just a straight shine. But the video was very creative and fun to watch, and you’re so pretty you can carry off anything.

  • @CheekSoup
    @CheekSoup 2 года назад +31

I’m curious about how the image translates on your screen vs. inlaid in the video. For me, it appears to be much cooler-toned both on the eyes and lips. (More like blended-out blacks and greys with the tiniest touch of ox blood than cranberry or true purple tones.) I would be interested to see the results of starting with a base of black and going from there! But I love the concept, for sure, and that liquid shadow does seem to be pretty magical.

Post-modern, grunge Mata Hari. Luurve!!!! If decent makeup had been available in the early 90’s, this is absolutely what would have been my signature look when I was on stage. I believe this really shows the benefits of make up playtime, and it not feel like you are trying out new products. Hopefully other people are encouraged to play with their products as well to re-create whatever look they desire. Or just enjoy what they have!

Hannah this was such fun to watch. I’ve only found you recently but I’ve pretty much been binge watching you 😆
I think your job recreating the look was made very difficult by the fact you have way more eyelid real estate than the model. Your shadow ended up much higher and you could never get that same shape. I think if her eyes were open, you’d see it’s blended just above the crease.

Also, I LOVE this concept and would very much enjoy more videos in this vein if you find yourself inspired by other makeup advertising! Getting to see your process as you tried to figure out what to do next was very cool, and reminded me that makeup is in no way free of the trial-and-error process inherent to all artistry, despite the way that we're usually only shown the glossy & editorialized finished product.

I am 48. In the last few years, as my face ages, I have had to reality check the vision I have of myself in my minds eye. As I skim through pages of fashion magazines I am drawn to those smooth glossy lids. I want to acquire the thing that will make me look like that. I have bought the things that could do it and failed. My hooded lids betray me. If I were still the glass skin of my youth, I would have winged liner out to there and gloss all over.

I found it so fun to just watch you play with makeup in this video. it’s always a learning experience and good to try new things, even if you end up disliking it and washing it all off in the end. as someone who doesn’t wear makeup for “fun” or all that often, on the rare occasions that I do play a lot like this it’s always a little crazy to swatch out all the things I own and see how different they look from pan to skin, especially if i’m trying to match a specific color! I also think playing like this can be fun and a good way to learn what shapes work on your unique face shape & features. sometimes a lesson learned aiming for one look can turn around and really help you in something totally different.
I really like how your eye look turned out here but I think an even more berry/grape/purple lip (which is what the photo looked like to me) would go even better than the more red/orange lip here … but I know you’re really partial to those colors so I can see how they’d bring you more happiness! and I think confidence in your look is the most attractive thing anyone can “wear”.
I recently bought nail polish in that kind of shade and I love it, definitely didn’t expect to see you in that color!

I went back and looked, because this was the zenith of my Chanel makeup collecting, and as I thought, the main eye shade is ILLUSION D'OMBRE Rouge Noir, which I still have. It’s a super interesting formula, creamy in the pot, but with a satin finish. I suspect there is a layer of creamy black liner in the outer corners under the pot shadow, and pencil in the same shade at the lashline. My friend was an international Chanel makeup artist then, and that was a technique he used on me for a dramatic eye. I think your look came out very pretty, kind of your iteration of the ad. Also in that holiday collection was a quad Signe Particulier Creation Exclusive 4 Ombres, and the darkest powder in that shadow group may have been used to add depth on some places. I don’t believe I bought that quad, so I don’t have it to test, but I’m sure I have the pot shadow and quite possibly the liner. The lips look like a mix of a burgundy red lip in that collection topped with a burgundy gloss. I love when people recreate a look! Such a fun video

Fun to watch. Knowing what the eyeshadow/liner colors look like from the ‘15 holiday release, I really wanted to shop your stash for you. I’m forced to sit on my hands. 🖤😆 A trick for the eyes, I think, was to have used a nude (for you) matte on the brow bone, to mute the edges that were bugging you.
Absolutely love the fabric of that top. It’d fit me as a head wrap, though, not a top. Hehehehe
I’ve GOTTA get that lip rouge powder! Every time you use it, I go “DAMN!”

Here for it! This was fun to watch! It was yes, no, no, ok, yea!, ah, no, ya she's convinced me 😎🤍😂 It was all the emotions I have when trying to do my own eyeshadow. I think the slicked hair and blush were spot on. By the end I liked the eyes. If you do it again I'd like to see the look with a nude lip, and then a dark lip. The lip reads rusty on my screen.

This was really enjoyable to watch and I admire that you didn't wipe away anything from the actual eyelid area like I tend to do once a look goes awry for me. I do think the end look as very different from the look as presented in the Chanel ad, but like, had you just been wearing it from the beginning of the video, I wouldn't have thought much of it because it is still a strong makeup look albeit a bit messy. But like, that can be in itself part of a look I feel?

So fun to bring us along for makeup playtime! It was fun and inspiring to see you work through it and decide how best to adapt the look for your purposes and based on your collection. Would love to see you film a second attempt! 💕

Oh Hannah, this was such a fun video to watch!! I love that you took inspiration from this image and found a way to play and to push yourself to try new techniques and color combinations and my favorite part was that you rallied! Makeup is just makeup and should be fun! I pray 🙏🏼 that no one is rude or disrespectful as you feared 😢 How can we know unless we try? I think this look was textural and creative and it was a joy to watch! Thank you so much for this video and for brightening my day 💜 after a painfully long week! 🥴 Sending you tons of love, beautiful! 💖💐 Sparkle on, queen!! ✨💕

I love the idea of this as a series! I think that there’s a place for that (i.e. creativity via the constraint of trying to replicate a specific inspiration closely with the items you already own) to balance out the more realistic “making a concept work for my style” content that we also adore from you.
P.S. In addition to just laying down a black base, I wonder if you could have mixed some black and purple shadow with just a little bit of something emollient, making a "cream" shadow. I feel like that might have approximated the smoothness and sheen of the original look 🤔

The center of the lid is the brightest/shiniest, I think a matte shadow below the eyebrow would have made it look closer to the inspiration picture.

I love all your content, so so much, can I just say I enjoyed watching you “struggle” with making the look work the way you wanted. I often feel so isolated especially as I try to make a look with makeup I already own, and watching you work your way through this was really comforting to me. Made me feel like I can approach my own makeup more confidently in the future.

I love the way it turned out and though the slicked back hair clears the face and gives it a more editorial vibe, if I saw you on the streets out and about wearing it with your hair all wild and free my reaction would be HOLY SMOKES EXCUSE ME MA'AM can I get a crumble of your confidence and fierceness??? Hahahah

Hmmmm. Great project! I think you should try it again but omit the pencil to start. Take the NTD shade all the way to the brow and darken the outer corners with a plummier/leaning to matte black rather than a red shade. Then layer/mix a silver on the lid. Finish with something very creamy and plum on the lash line and a tiny bit of silver on the brow. See what that does. 🥂

Your title biased me against the look until you said you loved it, and as soon as you started feeling yourself and working it I was immediately on board. The Lookability of a look I truly think is determined by the swagger of its host. I love this look for and on you, although your Hela palette look is the recent one that REALLY took my breath away. I will be shopping my stash to recreate both of them

Super fun to watch as usual! My only suggestion would be (and I say this from personal experience) don’t put the eyeshadow all the way up to the eyebrows. If you look carefully at the Chanel ad there is a strip of bare skin right underneath her eyebrows and in my opinion, that makes all the difference. Just a suggestion. 🥰
