Please don't ever feel like you shouldn't go deeper into the topics, like explaining the darkness and the window to lightness, that's what I love most about you - that you're able to make a trend or a palette about life and deeper refelctions. Your intelligence and way with words are why I subscribed in the first place.

I think that you did a fantastic job articulating why it is that "Euphoria makeup" seems so appealing to so many people right now. Not only is it a celebration of natural features, like you said, but it also feels like a refreshingly lighthearted way of going about make up when 'perfection' has been the standard for so long. I've also had the experience of loving that concept despite not actually doing it very much, but this video made me really excited to just play and not take myself too seriously!

i think abstract makeup is a good way to describe the "euphoria makeup" trend you discussed. as an art historian, i think the dichotomy between naturalistic or illusionistic art and abstract art maps well onto the binary you drew between illusionistic makeup (which has a purpose of correcting and altering the appearance of facial features) and abstract makeup, which is not concerned with imitation and rather with expression and, as a result, the materiality of makeup as well. it's less about using makeup to feign the natural shadows of bone structure or the flush of blood under skin and more about exploring the makeup FOR its material qualities, bringing those qualities to the forefront of attention (textures, glittery finishes, rhinestones, graphic shapes) and not trying to hide it or transform it. early 20th century art critic clement greenberg described abstract art as engaging in medium specificity, meaning it is concerned with the inherent qualities of paint as a medium rather than using paint to create the illusion of the natural world (i.e. painting as a window), and i think what we're seeing is the "medium specificty" of makeup being embraced and explored openly in a similar way that abstract artists explored the inherent qualities of paint, line, shape, texture, and canvas. i hope that makes sense

As a boring millennial who is still working frontline in this p*ndemic and most days only sports N95 mask indents on my face, I can't be more excited about this reclamation of glamour and anti-perfectionism. I think we can actually thank Gen Z for this. I love seeing fresh skin, scars and freckles under the glitter and neon and stick on gems. It's also an exciting reclamation of freedom and optimism that we haven't felt over the past 3 years.

I’m super excited for no falsies, blush draping, and more creative/expressive makeup being a thing. I got into makeup after a major breakup as a form of self expression and exploration and I feel like any trend in makeup that causes people to shift their ideas about makeup from “I’m doing this to look presentable” to “I’m free in my self expression and I am happy to go about my day wearing the art I created” is always exciting! Also, I was never into the super dewey look and always tried to strike the matte/dew balance with literally everything I had on my skin so that it 1) lasted longer and 2) felt more comfortable on my skin, so I really hope the skin-like matte-ish thing will trend again too!!

I feel like the "euphoria makeup" is a celebration of futuristic looking makeup because the world has been in such a dark place for the last 2 years
But as "shallow" as putting powders and creams on a face is this escapism of colour and thinking of the future is one of the things that cheered me up the most throughout the pandemic

Matte skin is going to trend for sure! I feel as far as skin is concerned we’re emulating Korea’s trends with a 1-2 years delay. What they have right now is “mochi skin” that’s meant to look pump and well moisturized “on the inside”, but with a soft matte surface.

The makeup of Euphoria reminds me so much of my youth. A teen in ‘90s NYC; Club Kids and rave culture. Eyeliner and mascara running down sweat soaked skin. The inescapable glitter that would last straight thought to class on Monday, not so subtly broadcasting your weekend exploits. I distinctly remember my dad, having spent his 20s in ‘60s London, buying me a Mary Quant makeup book. He loved how much my makeup reminded him of his youth. I guess it all comes back around 💕

I think that the "euphoria" makeup looks often also tie into the resurgence of 1970s makeup in a sort of disco way. The other day I was playing with makeup and did a "euphoria" makeup look that involved a lot of opalescent glitter, and my parents asked me if it was meant to be a disco-inspired look.

I love your section about the reclamation of glamor, it reminded me of that section of the Contrapoints video Opulence where she pointed out glamor's etymology from the Scottish word gramarye which means magic and enchantment which totally works with your whole idea of glamor as whimsy and light heartedness!

I feel like the Glossier Play line was trying to be that 'Euphoria' style of makeup, but I'm in two minds about whether it failed because it was before its time, or for other reasons such as how it was marketed, or how out of touch they were with their audience when they used layers of unnecessary plastic packaging.
Graphic lines and blocks of playful colour had been trending slightly before Euphoria but that series has definitely catapulted those things into the larger makeup community and general consumer space. I love that the makeup style has become synonymous with that TV show even to people who have never seen it, like you and I :)

Hannah, you crack me up - 10 minutes on a trend you like, but would probably never wear yourself! I, too, enjoy looking at it, but it isn't my thing. Second, I started to tint my very blond eyebrows because of hearing you talk about how you tint yours. As I was doing it I was looking closer at my long invisible eyelashes. I don't mind mascara, but years ago I paid a fortune to have mine tinted and loved it. I thought...why not ? So I did it . Tinted my lashes, LOVE it so much I don't even wear mascara . Super careful. And started with just the tips.. thanks for the great idea!

I really like the idea of minimal extravagance with the Euphoria trend and hope it'll last a few years. It's so joyful. I am interested if 90s sleazy, slinky glamour will make a comeback - like if Pamela Anderson became a trend muse, I would be excited to see the multiple interpretations.

I think the euphoria makeup trend is very much a reflection of the pandemic. So much of the imagery you shared had that DIY, artwork your mom hung on the fridge from fourth grade, scribbled on your desk at school, vibe to it. It feels like fingerpainting. The colour palette, too, is nostalgic, leaning toward the vivid hues you might find in a box of crayons. This trend, I feel, is the reclamation of the last few years of childhood lost by teenagers (who are also conveniently the demographic driving TikTok content) to the pandemic. What I do NOT like is the use of glitter and rhinestones - when can we move away from plastic in makeup and into more sustainable materials??

One of the things that excites me most about the trending of the euphoria-esque/playful makeup is that it feels like everyone can let go of their “signature” looks more and just play. I love a thicccccc wing and have been rocking them since high school; but there’s so much more play to do now and less pressure to maintain one makeup look so you always look like “you.”

Natural lashes and natural brows! I have never done false fashes or liked filling in my brows so to have our natural faces be accepted and seen as beautiful is so amazing. I do love no makeup makeup with skin and never thought 90s matte was too much. I would love to see a trend or a conversation on embracing natural skin tones. I feel depending on culture people want lighter or darker (tanner) skin, and it would be nice to highlight that looks don't have to be overly bronzed or the opposite to look beautiful.

I've been hearing about Euphoria makeup for a while, and looking at the inspiration shots and hearing you talk about it makes me instantly think of Jem and the Holograms, the 80s TV show. That combined with the colored lashes and blush draping could make for some "Truly Outrageous" (the tagline from the show) makeup looks. Also it appeals a lot because I don't have to try and make multiple colors for a cohesive whole, but can focus on a single color as the focus. I think since it's just one color or one or two colors, I feel like you can take the look to a more extreme place. I'm here for it, even if I only ever wear it on work video calls.

Something that isn’t necessarily a fresh 2022 trend but has grown massively over the past couple years is beauty brand model diversity. Not just diversity in skin tone but age and gender as well. This also goes along with non-retouched beauty and fashion imagery and that’s huge! The fact that we can look at an ad campaign for makeup and see real skin on people with an age range of like 50 years with all different skin tones, body types and different genders is still pretty damn new and I love that it finally seems to be the norm.

I frequently give speeches about using my physical form as a canvas to express myself daily, so I really enjoyed your ramblings :)
When I first started using makeup as a teen I used it as a security blanket, and it was frequently heavy and mask-like. Though I liked makeup, it was more accurate to say I was scared to show my bare face to the world. Over time, I started to see more of what I didn't like about applying makeup become the core of the beauty community - contour and fake lashes and overlining lips and a million other things that made you look like you had a completely different face, a better one (or, one more alignment with eurocentric beauty standards). I realized that the thing I dreaded most was the idea that the people in my life wouldn't recognize me without makeup - that they would never actually see ME. So I consciously steered away from that in my mid-twenties.
At this point in my life I'm happy to apply my favorite parts of makeup and hang the rest, and what I love is color. I just slap it on wherever. Purple glitter undereye bags? Glowing electric pink puffy cheeks? A constellation of zits accented by a bright purple lip? Lay it on me. I feel gorgeous. Now, I can have friends over and not wear a stitch of makeup and everyone knows it's me, and I can go for a walk in the park with green glitter all over my eyelids to pay homage to the grass under my feet.
I've never seen Euphoria, but people reference it more and more when they comment on my makeup. I consider it enormously flattering that when people see me, they think of a show that's famous for its makeup artistry and creativity. Being reminded of the fact that one of the things that brings the most joy to my life is being represented in a show that is literally named after the feeling it gives me always makes me smile!

I would absolutely love to see you do a video where you do all of your colour cosmetics with different colour than normal without the idea of making it look good. So maybe try an olive blush, blue lips, purple eyeshadow. These would be extremes, but you could also make a brown-black lip and yellow blush work.

As someone who almost always avoids the "negative" videos, thank you for this!! Also, as a young Gen X-er, I couldn't be more thrilled w/90s makeup coming back, and actually knowing how to do my makeup this time, as opposed to jr. high and high school. Maybe I'll go buy a bottle of CK One while I'm at it. ;)

Young gen-X here as well, although the jury's out as to whether I'm any better at makeup now than I was then, to be honest. I'm still struggling to find the right foundation (I used cream-to-powder compact foundation for a long time, and when that became harder to find and I was looking for alternatives, I discovered I'd been wearing the wrong colour for most of my life anyway, and I'm still working all of that out), so I'm stuck on that step because I feel like anything I build on the wrong foundation will also be wrong, so...my perfectionism won't let me proceed until I've got this step sorted.
CK One wasn't my thing, but I have bottles of Exclamation and Ghost Myst (and I think one other, but I can't remember which one. Maybe Vanilla Fields or Sunflowers?) that I bought on Ebay for nostalgia, and I'm contemplating cracking them open to see if I love them now like I did then.

I really like your more positive spirited videos. I get why the negatives do better, but it's in the positives and the newer things that one can appreciate your taste more. I know thw past trends, I know and like or dislike the current fashions, but it's in the new things that I find interest and joy, the chance of renewal and finding things I want to experiment with. I think that we are again in a large shifting of trends, where new looks arise, more micro-trends, and it's the most interesting moment!

The way you described the first trend was absolutely beautiful!! I am an artist/painter and have had the same love and passion for makeup since I was really young. I used to be so excited to try colorful and grungy looks and experiment but I lost that spark when dramatic cut-creases, baking and falsies became the trend for a few years. Now at 22, I have finally fallen head over heals in love with makeup again and am having so much fun! I didn't really know how to describe my feelings in words but you did so beautifully!

I like that you showed an ad showcasing a woman over 45! I hope makeup companies will be inclusive of older women as we comprise a HUGE part of their customer base. Just because we are in out later 40s and far beyond, it doesn't mean we are dead! I'm 48 and still love the trends. I still want to feel inspired and try new things. Makeup has always been an art form for me and not just a way to improve my looks. I still like shiny, shimmer, bright colors and I love trying new techniques and looks. Not everything is for me, just as everything was not for me in my 20s (for instance, I never jumped on board with the skinny brows in the 90s and won't if that makes a reappearance). Applying makeup is like therapy and an art form all in one.
Give me music, some makeup and I am a happy person!

It’s so interesting. I think I have to be in a lighthearted, irreverent or even a darker, rebellious state of mind to go for these makeup styles: a little blue in the inner corner, blush draping, a smear of lime green across my lids, glitter madness. It’s my version of “I don’t care, I want to feel free” but bringing my mood to my face and into focus more intensely.

I mostly wear makeup as a self-expression, not to look “beautiful” or cover my “imperfections”. I love color and I’m not shy to wear what I like. I was in high school in the 70s, and was into “punk” alternative in the 80s, so my aesthetic has never been particularly mainstream. I really love your list here. It’s kind of weird actually liking something “trendy”. I recently picked up the Menagerie Arthurine blush palette and I’m having so much fun with it!

I've noticed a divergence from using makeup to "perfect" too. I think as we've spent a lot more time at home getting comfortable with our bare faces, putting effort into the colorful and fun aspects of makeup is much more rewarding than disguising any "imperfections". If we think about the absolute essentials, it's usually concealer and mascara. Nothing wrong with either of those things, but they're practical in the sense that they make us look "presentable" for other people. Wearing makeup but with natural lashes and/or no concealer, which I think is a trend with Gen Zers that is slowly trickling up to the rest of us, being more normalized is really freeing for femme presenting people. Like you said, it's more of a celebration, medium for creativity, and an expansion of who we are.
