- Pretty popular DTC P0170 on the Ford Powerstroke. What is going on Phhhhhhhhamily, glad to be back for another popular DTC that I have been seeing a bit lately. It is P0170, the majority of them have been a reprogram TSB that I showed you, but this one sadly did not pass ie because the MIL came back on. Watch and find out what we found using the great interactive diag with the PC/ED & IDS (Thanks FORD crew for hooking us technicians with the baddest shit out therrr) PPPreciate chu.....tell me what you all think in the comment section. I love how easy you make it sound. Even dummies like me feel like I know what is going on. Keep up the good work dude.
Lolololol
Pretty awesome! I love how you explain all the details.
I'm a big fan of these videos. I appreciate you sharing stuff like this. Thanks!!
I APPRECIATE chu!
I recently cracked the ccv tube just taking out the intakes for a disaster prevention kit install. Taped it up for the mean time but am getting the p0170 code. I will be changing the ccv box very soon. Not looking forward to that little bit of fun.
Thank you for all you do and share!
I can see your problem, and the reason for the code. It is the cracked Intercooler hose cold side, this will also cause the engine to idle up when in park.
Would love to see a tutorial on how to set up account etc to use that ford program/diagnostic. Very cool. You sir are a great technician. Unfortunately there are to many parts changers until the problem is fixed now a days! Keep killing it!
I had one that was super intermittent on a 2017 F350. Chased it for weeks. Like every 400kms it would throw it. Was NPF every time I would check it. A field service engineer came out. He had no idea. We threw the parts cannon at it. The crankcase oil separator ended up fixing it. Been 2 years now only been in for service since
Excellent deductive reasoning/fix there Dr Arod! I feel like I attended the University of PTT Arod! 👍🏼👏🏻💪🏼
Hahahahaha
Great troubleshooting methods, Arod!!!!
Awesome video! You explain everything so well.
💪💪
Love it. Keep the videos coming.
Another logical step by step analysis👌👌well done👏👏👏 have a great weekend👍💪💯
Hey buddddd
A month later and this is the 5th time I have had this code come up. I’m not taking it to the dealer anymore. The money saved with my warranty isn’t enough to offset the cost of not having my truck for weeks at a time.
The last time I took my truck in they did a few regens reset the code and told me my DPF was clogged causing it. They had my truck for 6 days
I wish I had a tech like you near me who would actually take their time to fix the issue and not put it on the back burner and do a regen.
I am going to start by removing and inspecting my charge pipe as everyone online is saying that’s the most common issue.
I bought forscan and have been tinkering with it so I am going to try and find some tutorials on it so I can learn how to test as many things as I can. If I can’t figure it out I guess I’ll have to take it back to the dealer but that’s last resort as they keep it for a week no matter what
That video was so cool. Worth spending for a mechanic that has the tools and knows how to use them.
6:32 i just cant have enough of the glorious sound of a diesel engine. I could listed to it for hours, lol.
Good video! I feel like I need to visually check my air filter.
Been fighting this code a long time. When arod says check air filter check your pre filter too. Foam one on outside of airbox right side underneath. Clean it / replace it. Mine was very dirty and code has been gone awhile now after cleaning. Sorry if he went over this i may have missed it. 11-16 6.7
Some old-school PTT content!
All this Powerstoke content meanwhile my tire guys at the shop I work for got dealt a brand new F550 cab/chassis with a lift bucket on it for 6 tires with winter rating...damn thing had the 7.3 gasser in it!
U a BADASS! 👍
Love this kinda stuff.
Such good info man. You're doing the people solid, taking the time to make these. Obviously you're in the shop after hours with it being so quiet. You da fuckin man brudda, for real.
Middle of theee day 😝😝
@@PowerStrokeTechTalkwARod dang! You can almost hear yourself thing in there! Nicer!
I ❤️ IDS I have not linked my technical resources & vcm 2 together have figure that one out be a good day tomorrow to tri it that pin point test is awesome
Same here, this is the first time I've seen them work together, WOW what a timesaver.
So my 2017 threw an air mass flow sensor code…. I hopped on here and the first video I see, check for a crack in the charge hose coming from air intake… BOOM!!! My hose cracked, end of problem. Don’t let ppl tell you what’s wrong, take 5 min to check your $100,000 truck for obvious signs before letting ppl just say oh, it’s this….
Good video thanks for the tips thanks ARod
thank you
P0170 can be a tricky dtc. Could be any from a fuel system concern to a air leak. It's a extremely vague DTC.
You made that look too easy. Nice work.
That code came on my truck last Tuesday they did an update they said and also had to replace my intercooler hose
You mention forscan ARod, i have that does it also walk you through these kind of steps for codes? Awesome video. Just wish my local techs were cool 😎
No sir it does not, sry.
Cool ARod. Nice trouble shooting
Nice trouble shooting sequence - thanks for sharing! Kinda low mile failure on that sensor and tube, no? Something else to keep an eye on I guess... BTW, I am a fan of the two tone, just not the stone on white (unfortunately I have stone on star white which really doesn’t pop even after a good polish and graphene coating) . But stone on black, oh yeahhh, now u talkin’...
Hi Aaron ,it's been a while since I been on you tube forgive me lol. Shoulda known my ford guy would have a video on this 👌🏼😁
2 tone looks pretty good . I do like my grey though.
Good job on that fix. When you know them inside out, you can fix em quick. I like how thorough ids is. Very good tool to have.
Have a great weekend
Love you pal
A Rod,.. an Idea for content. What replacement parts might travelers, especially backcountry travelers carry? I have the Thinkdiag OBD2 Reader you recommended, my old belt from the last change but still good, MAF Cleaner. What common parts might we carry to fix or limp rather than require towing? When traveling these days it is almost impossible to find a dealer that doesn’t schedule a week or three in advance. Many or most of us are also pulling trailers, so in the event of a breakdown both the truck and trailer need be towed which can be very costly. What basic Ford 6.7 PS parts list might you recommend for those who want to be self-sufficient. Which sensor failures put a truck down? I thought this might be interesting content for us travelers out here. We are many.
would have been perfect time for that s&b cold side pipe =)
Warranty bud.....
I put new maf,air filter and cold side pipe. Still getting a po170.
Pcm update for that code. Read the comments
I've been having P0170 for a couple years now but only during the winter months when temps are consistently below 40°F (central IL). I've had no drivability concerns (mpg has remained consistent) and I've thrown parts at it (new MAF, CAI, deleted EGR and DPF). The only thing I haven't done is the charge tube. Is it really as easy as a slight leak in the charge tube(which is still factory at 140k+ miles)?
I’m still currently enjoying ids more then fdrs.
Ahhhhhh.....yeah
Gotta chime in. They do use banks to label injector circuits. 2,3,5,8 I believe is bank 1, 1,4,6,7 on bank 2. Just had problems with a main engine harness on a work truck.
No...passenger side front to back...1.2.3.4......D.. side front to back....5.6.7.8
That’s the cylinder order yes. But as far as the injector wiring circuit, it’s divided into the banks I mentioned. If you dig into the main engine harness break down you’ll see. I could post a pic but it won’t let me 😢😢 lol
Yes sir, I understand now 👍
@@PowerStrokeTechTalkwARod yea I worded it a little incorrectly. All good. Love the videos. Sharing information is important to keeping our trade alive. You’re doing a great thing! I’ve been watching for a while.
👍
🤯
Coolant reservoir looks a tad low?
That thing sure screamed at 2500 rpms. That is nice that it has the trouble tree built into the scan tool for the codes it has. Hopefully it stays away now. Maybe it dusted the MAF sensor and baked on some contaminates? How did the old sensor look?
Looked ok
MAF rules: generally skewed maf reading with switching that is too high consistently across the range, dirty maf. MAF readings that aren't out of range until the truck begins to enter into boost, leaking charge pipe connnections, leaking exhaust pressure. I hate making videos but really need people to realize how often the cold side is torn and leaking as well as 2015+ trucks having issues with the very crappy outlet and inlet flange "oring" gaskets...and for the record, I have choice words for that oring not being available over the counter.
Can any of this be done by in forescan
So did it fix the problem?
So it really didn’t need the MAF sensor. The split in the cold side cac tube was causing the problem. Had that kick my ass about a year ago.
Busted
Great job. I was wondering about the 6.2 gas is it a good motor. Looking at a nice 17 with 95k on it just don’t know much about them. Thanks you.
They good, have done bunch valve springs. Watch my video on it.
@@PowerStrokeTechTalkwARod I will thanks for getting back to me.
Ive replaced a boat load of spark plug boots/wires and coils on them, but generally great engines with minimal repairs of the 100's of them in our fleet. I've seen a bunch that arc from spark plug boot to block or whatever is the path of least resistance. You'll hear some mild to moderate ticking noise, almost always see electrical arcing off of something from a plug boot. Fuel rail, thermostat housing, block, etc.
ARod…I have a 2015 6.7 F450 in the shop with the P0170. It is a comeback after performing a PCM to latest calibration reprogram and MAF reset earlier in the year. Have you had any issues with that model year coming back after a reprogram and reset? One other question, what are your thoughts on a HPFP test that fails in step number 1 but passes all others? Build up time of 850 with max of 656. All other times ok. Is that the beginning of a pump wearing out? Can’t find much info on diagnosis.
You'd have to email me & we have to book some time
@@PowerStrokeTechTalkwARod Awesome Videos. Thank you for putting the time into them and thank you for replying.
Have that same code I don’t know if I can same test with Snapon scanner..
You'll have 2 get access 2 the manuals
How could I get a forscan tool. I have the p0170 code. Also want to program a new valve body for the 6r140 on my 17’ f350
Forscan.org it's free!
Where does that oily, sticky black stuff on the air filter come from? My 2011 always has that stuff on the filter, even just a few days after replacing it. I never see this on my wife's 3.5l Duratec, my company Super Duty with 6.2l, or my not-Ford vehicle.
The oil on the filters like glue probably wipe out the air Box
So was the charge air cooler tube leaking too?
It twas
Just got mine back from the dealer. They held it for 7 days to do the TSB update on the pcm 80 miles later p0170 again and my tank still pulls a horrific vacuum
That has nothing to do with that.....
@@PowerStrokeTechTalkwARodwhat has nothing to do with what ? The PCM reprogram for the P0170 or the fuel tank having a vacuum and the P0170.
The ford dealership I went to replaced my fuel cap and reprogrammed the pcm but it didn’t fix either issue
The 170 has nothin to do with the vacuum on the tank...
Do you by chance have the part number for the maf?
No but your Ford dealer would
So my f250 has the same code but after it hits half ta k of gas the check engine turns off. Does that sound like some diffrent?
No
Do you live in Dearborn, MI?
I mean, sure
@@PowerStrokeTechTalkwARod Thanks for your reply. Am having the same issue with my F250 Diesel truck. Am wondering can I bring my truck to your shop?
Powerstroketechtalkwarod@gmail.com
What’s going on with the banging in the fuel system 2021 6.7 I have not found anyone talking about it and ford can’t fix it
Banging......
@@PowerStrokeTechTalkwARod sounds like there’s a golf ball inside the fuel tank does it when it’s idling or driving we’ve already did the TSB And replace the fuel pump
New pumps are coming out. Bosch had to do a re-do
@@PowerStrokeTechTalkwARod I was told it was going to be out 1st of December but still not in yet. Do you think that will fix it?
From what I've looked into. There was a design change with Bosch causing an NVH concern with the current set up that we have. Hold tight...I wanna do an update video
Got a P0170 P0139 P2A01??? Help please
We wld have 2 go thru the pin point tests
