BEST BUDGET AM5 MATX MSI B650M Gaming Plus WiFi 6E review
There are a lot of entry level Micro ATX motherboards on the AM5 platform, but sadly a lot of them are a little disappointing with low end VRMs.
The MSI B650M Gaming Plus WiFi costs a little more but has a decent 10+2+1 DUET VRM setup and has some big heatsinks installed to wick away some of the generated heat.

I was looking for a review to this motherboard and after a long time I got one. Thank you very much for uploading this video.
Glad I could help! nice board, i like it
Great video as always , love the board and especially love the 5 fan headers , weirdly my next board purchase will be mainly focused on how many fan headers it has , I'm obsessed with dust and love playing around with the fans to get a decent airflow without attracting too much dust ,
I don't game , I'm more tinkerer with Arduino stuff so i don't stress my P.C. too much , but i like to keep it cool and clean
this is a good board for that with all the headers it has
Nice review Mike and Lady Kath as always. I really like the look of this board. As Bob said....liken' the 80's vibe. Take care everyone and have a great week. Cheers.
Thanks for watching!
Another good lookin' and great performin' mobo from MSI. Really like the 80s decal on this one, would look decent in a white case build.
reminds me of a 80s shell suit
@@mikesunboxing hahahahaha...
Thank's Uncle Bob. now we all can become snow blind 😛
Good stuff Mike 👍
thanks, have a great day
What a lovely looking Mainboard 😘
Thank you very much for the MB review 😀
Our pleasure!
Lovely? No, it's too bright and cheery. I want the doom and gloom dark colors.
@@OlettaLiano Doom & gloom dark ??? just turn on the news. and you get it 😛
@@WilliamAndrewPhilipBodie No, I only turn on the news when I'm in the mood for a fiction story.
Just got this 2 weeks ago for a fully white build, good stuff
great little board, i really like it
Nice, specs of the pc?
Good looking board with plenty of features plus nice to see them trying to be diff with gaming logos. I saw a B550m Mortar mb on amazon, new £180 but As New £124! Because its AM5 worried it could have bent pins so would you advise buying new rather than risk amazon not checking returned mb?
Thanks for reviewing Mike and Kath, look forward to matx case videos 👍
matx is an often overlooked format and can potentially be as powerful but cheaper
Thanks Mike and Kath :D
Our pleasure! cheers Jason
Nice looking AM5 board that would suit my needs if I ever go the AMD route again.
thanks mike
Wow this incredible timing. My short list for Mobo is this and the Asrock RS Pro. Do you consider one superior in some way?
msi for the bios and software support.
@@mikesunboxing Thanks!
According to the website it seems to support more RAM too
@@mikesunboxinglike him, I'm on the fence between this and Asrock B650M Pro RS. I'd buy this today, thanks for the advice!
Great review! Would the ryzen 7 7800x3D be suitable for this motherboard?
yes that would be fine
Thanks again for another gift 🎁
you are welcome
Hi, Mike. I think the last couple motherboards you reviewed were too white-bright for my tastes. I like 'em jet-black with no RGB. On a different subject,. Wednesday I'm going to have my first full knee replacement surgery. Doing the left one first. If all goes well, in six to eight weeks I'll get the right one done. If it doesn't go well, you'll have one less trouble-maker on your channel to deal with. LOL
hope it all goes well and keep in touch if you can so we know you are okay. Sending best wishes and prayers for you
Hope the new knees are great! You KNEED them. lolz!
@@jamesmiscellaneous Thanks... I think. LOL
Nice heatsinks and integrated IO shield... Err, how does fitting a board with integrated IO shield work, does it just butt up to the opening
yes that is right it should fit reasonably snuggly in the opening, like a normal shield just without the "pop" when it fits right in
I would recommend making a video on the most reliable motherboards, there is no such video on the internet. Also, what ram you have found to be working well with the motherboard models. Are there any motherboard that dont boot without a bios update e.g. asus tuf boards.
there is a good reason that the video doesn't exist, and that is because the top choices change and with AM5 especially all the brands are stuggling with the LGA socket and pins. hopefully the 800 series boards due out in august will be a bit better
@@mikesunboxing also, the issue with intel and the ihs pressure on the cpu causing issues. This is why I have not upgraded, also waiting for the next intel and amd updates before taking a decision.
Hello my friend, great video, thanks a lot!
I have a question maybe you can help me, I bought this MB but I have a thing with the RAM.
I want to buy the Adata AX5U5600C4616G-SLABBK cause the price is good and have really good performance but that model isn't in the official support list of MSI, the thing is i saw a Kingston Fury KF556C40BB-16 but the thing is this Kinsgton don't have the EXPO profile, but this are in the official support list of MSI, so the question is I have problems if I buy a RAM that is NOT into the official RAM list? And what if I buy a ram that only has the Intel XMP option?
Thanks a lot for your answer and sorry for my english, greetings!
ideally get any ram that is EXPO certified, just because it isn't on the QVL doens't mean it won't work, just they might not have got around to testing it yet.
For AM5 systems avoid XMP only ram for now
This board, ASRock B650M PG Riptide or maybe Gigabyte B650M Gaming X AX? I know ASRock comes with nvme pcie 5.0, but MSI has better connectivity.
the msi one for me i think
I've just not long got my 7800x3d but gotta say getting thermal paste on them looks like a nightmare I've not set it up yet but not looking forwards to it lol, I do like MSI tho purely on cosmetics a think they go all out to make there products look great I was stuck between this and the auros
MSI boards for me have had the edge for a while now, the bios layout and the software all work very well (most of the time)
Hey is this good for the ryzen 7 7800x3d? I dont know anything about vrms and power delivery, is this good enough for a high end pc?
yes this will be fine for that
Which one is better msi pro b650m-a wifi or msi b650m gaming plus wifi? Getting both for same price
gaming plus wifi for me
just upgraded to am5 with this mobo. i love this board. i wanted to add a 2nd stick of ram but couldn't move the bottom latch of the 4th ram slot. is that locked?
no it should move okay like the others
@@mikesunboxing i think the bottom latch is locked i couldnt get it moving. but i installed the new ram. it worked fine but after the pc was on sleep mode it gave a bsod. and after restarting its been ok. should i be worried?
I am using the same motherboard bought about a month ago and using Ryzen 7600. But my M2 2 TB nvme keeps getting crashed while playing Games and then the drive disappears until I restart my PC 😢
try it without the heat sink on, it might be getting dislodged from the m.2 connection with expansion and contraction heat cycles
I don't know much about motherboards but how would you rate this motherboard from 1 to 10 for ryzen 7 7800x3d and 4080super considering that my budget for a motherboard is no more than $170
solid 9
@@mikesunboxing Thank you very much
my pc case is antec p82 flow. i cant seem to connect the front panel usb connector in this motherboard. isn't that standardized or do i need a converter or adapter?
should be okay, is it the same size plug but just wont fit?
@@mikesunboxing yes its the same size plug i worked it out. the cable is a bit tight around the back. i might have to loosen it
But I’m then again each to their own!
ASUS Prime B650M-A WiFi II or Msi 650m gaming plus WIFI?
msi gaming plus wifi for me
@@mikesunboxing I am surprised, thanks
B650 eagle ax review please
i don't think that board has a diagnostic led, so i would advise caution against buying any board that doesn't have a diagnostic dled for AM5
@@mikesunboxing it has 4 led
is Be Quite Dark Pro 5 fit on it?
no idea sorry, i would think so
Building guide please
okay no problem
Sorry, the best budget am5 has to be AsRock B650M-HDV/M.2. MSI does have one candidate to compete that. It is MSI B650M Gaming WIFI (non-plus) version. It is so sad MSI doesn’t sell that board to the Western world. For DDR5 budget board, 2-dimm makes more sense.
the AsRock B650M-HDV/M.2 is a good board and probably one of the more powerful in the price class, but no RGB in 2024, that for a massive bulk of the market is a deal breaker either before or after they buy one and end up on a discord somewhere asking how to control their argb devices
Is that the Ryzen 7 7700 you bought from AliExpress?
yes it is, runs great
@@mikesunboxing Nice to hear that, I thought you have bought a dodgy cpu. :)
Yeah,nabbed a few of these-neat mobos.
they are pretty cool and good value for money
@@mikesunboxing yeah,Yeah they really have it all-for most potential builders.Was a good overview,btw man.
Can it handle Ryzen 9 7900 non X ?
yes that should be fine
@@mikesunboxing thanks mate
She doesn’t want MicroShafts!
Horrible looking motherboard, as I said MSI is basic and cheap and I personally think they are rubbish..
Great review though, as usual..
That is the beauty of the pc market there is lots of choice so you can choose what suits your needs
@@mikesunboxing For the price it's pretty good though.. Wifi6, built in IO cover, 2 NVME, 4 Ram slots and USB-c front header..
@@Vialli100. yeah spec wise it ticks most of the boxes, the colours are a shame and the lower PCIe GPU slot is a pain
I actually like the teal color on the board. That along with the silver color, gives it a superhero type feel to it. And I love most MSI motherboards. You should take a look at Hardware Unboxed reviews of previous Tomahawk, Pro Carbon, and Mortar motherboards for Intel and AMD. They get great recommendations.
Maybe you're an ASUS fan then? If so have fun bending over if you have to RMA anything from them. 😂
My Microcenter had the ASRock B650M PG Riptide MATX with a R7 7700x, 32gb 6000 bundle for $351
holy crap that is giving it away. the CPU on its own is worth nearly that
@@mikesunboxing With tax it was $389. In the bundle the CPU went down to $94
@@mikesunboxing With tax it was $389
