Don, I return to your work editing Teri’s appearances upon hearing of her passing. Thank you for your archive, and rest in peace Teri Garr. Thank you for these memories.
Thank you so much for this!!!!!!!! My love for Teri knows no bounds. None. If ever there were a woman in Hollywood that a guy like me would absolutely pine for, it would be Teri Garr. She possesses a level of intelligence, and comedic ability that is truly astonishing; her wit is so quick, it’s actually a little bit frightening. Dave had a lot of guests on over the years. She was the gold standard. No matter the situation, watching her and Dave interact, you had to be constantly on your toes, because you never knew what she was going to say. If you truly paid attention, you were rewarded by her genius. They had this wonderful, relaxed banter, and she was so charming, and self deprecating. It was clear that the two had a genuine affection for each other. But mixed in among the conversation, her words could contain real bite. She wasn’t afraid to speak her mind. She was completely genuine, and utterly fearless. When MS started to noticeably affect her ability to walk, she continued going on Dave’s show as long as she could. Teri’s gracefulness never ceased to amaze me, and yet when she was presented with one of the greatest challenges any human being could possibly face, she continued on working, and would not let her illness force her from doing what she loved. She is the personification of class, and courage. As beautiful, and ridiculous sexy as she has always been, her humanity was always her greatest asset. I don’t think it was possible to see her interviewed just one time, and not fall completely in love with her. I would wait impatiently for her to be back on Letterman. I couldn’t get enough of her. Teri, should you see this, I love ya. You are in my thoughts and my prayers. I thank you, from the bottom of my heart, for all the joy you have brought into my life. You are one of a kind. A very special woman.
I remember that he once introduced her as "the love of my life". She is an absolutely adorable woman. She had a way about her that would make any man fall in love with her.
Thank you for this. Great memories of the past. Teri Garr was a unique actress and I loved watching her appearances with David Letterman long ago. Rest in peace dear Teri.

My dad knew Teri briefly, back in the early 1960’s, when they filmed a program called The TAMI show in California. My dad was the drummer of the Barbarians and Teri was one of the dancers. He said she was such an incredible dancer- the best one by far, and was just as sweet and beautiful as she appears in movies and on talk shows.

I'm posting this comment under the first installment of this collection (rather than the 5th) in order to encourage folks to watch it--and watch all five parts, in as tight a time-frame as you can manage. Set aside time to see #5 when you won't be distracted. I myself finished the final installment a couple of days ago, and it was the culmination one of the most beautiful, devastating and profound documentaries I've ever seen. The way Don has sandwiched these Letterman spots between other media brilliantly frames Garr's Late Night appearances within the context of her skyrocketing rise to fame, her time at the top, the eventual fade of her star and the twilight of her career. More astonishingly, the collection chronicles a complex relationship between Garr and Letterman--professional, personal, passionate, sweet and sour. We see her grow into herself, evolve, struggle to break out of her carefully-constructed shell, and eventually find her own voice even as her body ultimately betrayed her. We see Letterman become infatuated and come to love her, only to have to say goodbye to the dream--the ideal--of Teri Garr and see her as a human being a who, in her frailty, found the strength she always sought. For my money, Giller has made something of a masterpiece here. Set aside some time and give this story the attention it deserves.
@@dongiller Completely deserved, Mr. Giller! The great documentations are those who get out of the way and let their subjects tell their own stories. I may have overstated the depth of what happened between the two of them, maybe projected a little subtext onto the relationship that wasn't really as "there" as it seemed to be. You can NOT help but smile when she is on. One of the most beautiful ladies in all of show business. I would take one Teri Garr in exchange for all other female actresses. She is the epitome, in my opinion, of a woman. The thing I love about her is she gave as much as she took when sparring with Dave. And Dave in the early days was no easy interview. Clearly they had a little thing going on, maybe no physical, but they certainly had a mental connection happening. My best wishes for her in her current health issues. Wonderful Teri Garr. Love it. Had a crush on her in these early years as a young teen - and she was my mom's age lol. Thanks Teri for being so genuine and upbeat and fun and REAL. Very refreshing.
The Teri Garr / Jay Leno retrospects are such a blast to revisit. Leno's bullet delivery, Garr's downhome charm, and the Letterman show in general are 3 of the thousand or so reasons it was fun growing up in this period.
Teri Garr's appearances on Late Night With David Letterman are some of my fondest memories of the 80s. Thanks to the time shift in the Mountain zone up here, we had to stay up pretty late to watch and it was totally worth it.
I thought Meg was my favorite compilation but now it’s this! I spent the last few days watching all five parts and now I’m rewatching it again 😂 Thank you for all of your hard work!
This compilations are trully great. A passage in time of the people, situations and instances that made this show such an important cultural event. Congratulations
I have always loved Terri Garr when I first saw her in an episode of MASH kissing hawkeye. That was '74, then her career cintinued to grow. I am disheartened she is now disabled unable to do anything at all. I alwas enjoy these bittersweet segments.
I just so fell in love with her when I was 16 and a Letterman groupie. I would go after school to go see the show 3-4 days a week and it was a highlight whenever she was a guest.
Absolutely loved the show in it's ealry days. Back then I worked at Mcdonalds on the closing crew, and would get home just in time to watch the show. It was so great. Funniest thing around. Not so good in it's latest years, as Dave turned it into a bitter, politically based platform. Nothing like the old days though.

Rewatching this for the second or maybe third time -- Dave mentions they covered the inventors expo in NYC a few years; I would love to see these episodes.
Lisa Kudrow’s character Phoebe on Friends reminds me a lot of Teri Garr. The laugh and mannerisms. I always wondered if Lisa channeled some of Teri’s behaviors into the character… Both are so funny, entertaining, and just... delightful!
Yes ... On 3 episodes ... 1 in Season 3 and 2 episodes in Season 4 ... I wish wish wish they had given the two a spin off show ... Phoebe could have worked with her mom in real estate sales. I think you could write a lot of funny episodes about a real estate office.
@@pepper1188 It was not an act. He was nuts for her from his radio days. Partaking of what you can get does not make it a preference over what you can't get. If Teri went for it there never would've been a couple of interns. The fact that I own a used Jeep from 2011 instead of a new Wrangler doesn't reflect a preference but rather what I have to settle for.

I can't think of a funnier actress in the last 100 years. She always makes me laugh and she was supposed to win the Oscar for Tootsie.
Wonderful Teri Garr. Love it. Had a crush on her in these early years as a young teen - and she was my mom's age lol. Thanks Teri for being so genuine and upbeat and fun and REAL. Very refreshing.
6:15 I imagine Bob Costas felt the same he’s about to jump out of his chair 😅
The Teri Garr / Jay Leno retrospects are such a blast to revisit. Leno's bullet delivery, Garr's downhome charm, and the Letterman show in general are 3 of the thousand or so reasons it was fun growing up in this period.
Leno was about as funny as a toothache.
Thanks!
These are labors of love, you can tell. A great deal of care and thought was put into these compilations.
Awesome!
And Terry Garr! She made ya melt when when she came on...
@@billregan9160 i could hardly watch it in the later years.the last few weeks were good.but i hate to say this, He shoulda got out earlier, And enjoyed his life and son and beard grooming.and money )
Very cool compilation, they had a great comedic rapport. Thank you, Don Giller.
Rewatching this for the second or maybe third time -- Dave mentions they covered the inventors expo in NYC a few years; I would love to see these episodes.
Teri is indeed a treasure! David and the Band are incredible!
Thanks, Don. Some of Dave’s funniest moments were with TG.
Lisa Kudrow’s character Phoebe on Friends reminds me a lot of Teri Garr. The laugh and mannerisms. I always wondered if Lisa channeled some of Teri’s behaviors into the character… Both are so funny, entertaining, and just... delightful!
Teri played Phoebe’s birth mother on the show. Guess the producers agree with you!
@@allenkishpaugh9228 I just caught that episode last night! With Phoebe getting pregnant with her brother’s kids and the cute pug puppy. 😂
And that’s why Lisa never seemed sincere in her energy for me. Just feels like she’s a poor man’s Teri Garr.
Didn't Terri Garr play Pheobe's mother?
Yes ... On 3 episodes ... 1 in Season 3 and 2 episodes in Season 4
... I wish wish wish they had given the two a spin off show ...
Phoebe could have worked with her mom in real estate sales. I think you could write a lot of funny episodes about a real estate office.
Loved her. It’s so sad that she has MS and is in a wheelchair. I wish her all the best.
Thank you for putting this collection together!
I've been waiting for you to do a compilation of Teri Garr on David Letterman for a long time. Thank you Don.
The lip biting, the hand on chin smirk, constantly tossing that hair ... this was a living angel! Godspeed to all your dreams and thank you.
my crush on Teri Garr will go on, RIP
this showed up in my auto-play, but i'm sure i would've looked it up eventually. well done.
And if I may be so bold - what did you have for lunch today? Thank you! Go Trump!
Tootsie: "It's very funny. Great idea. Going to be a big hit". Understatement of the century! :D
Amazing work, Don. Thank you!
She seems like such a nice, Personable, Genuine person.
Her intelligence shines through, one of her many gifts. And lucky us. You are missed.
This is great! You must have put a lot of work into this. it is much appreciated
Thanks!!
She was the best. Hilarious. RIP, Teri Garr.
Impossible not to smile watching them interact.
Gotta love Teri Garr. Such a lovely person.
Teri was always great! Loved her Letterman appearances in the 80s.
Dave and Teri always had very good chemistry together. I always looked forward to her appearances.
She was my favorite Letterman gues! Sweet, sweet woman!
Thank you for this. Sh is my one since always.
The one I have been waiting for! Thank you Don..
Loving this. Thank you.
To quote Rod Stewart, Teri was ageless, timeless, lace and fineness, she was beauty and elegance.
she was so radiant. and i am not talking just about her looks
Man, oh man! Been waiting for this for a long time! Thank you, Don Giller!
She. Is. Adorable.
Rest in peace to a beautiful, talented, and awesome lady. You will be missed, Teri.
RIP Teri! Such a warm human being... ❤
quite the conversationalist. brilliant. Knows how she comes across with every comeback.
Can’t wait to dig into this. Thanks Don!
Bows to don giller 👏👏 .. i need to watch all these before WWIII starts
Pack your gear, we're shipping out at oh-five-hundred.
Just started watching, but... That bit when Shaffer comes over and steals her away was really funny (28:40)
Thank you, Don!
I’ve never seen Dave so in love w a guest
Not at all even Teri Garr said it was all an act and she didn't talk to him off stage. He was totally into 20 year old interns...
He and Bonnie Hunt was good chemistry.
@@BrunetteOnTheCouch Read her book, she said it was an act and that she barely knew him and they didn't talk off set. I think he was being kind and had her on the show off and because he knew that she was ill.
