2:30 while it is true that clothes dont reflect IR as well, it was not used to detect humans but vehicles and entrenchments or other hiding and storage spaces that were covered with camo nets or dead vegetation
Aerochrome was the second coolest thing Kodak did during WW2. The first? Purifying the uranium for the Manhattan Project. (I don't think they will bring either back).
Hey there, fascinating video. The aerochrome scarcity issue is so bad that people and companies are putting massive effort into creating filters for full spectrum digital cameras to recreate the effect. I'm one of those people who've managed to make it, and it's under such difficulty, that no one's produced a perfect product yet, and likely never will.
It is worth mentioning that alternatives using ordinary cameras are not capable of really using infrared light. The best way to get Aerochrome-like effects is by using a camera with its sensor filter pack removed, and using a filter called IR Chrome by Kolari. This portrays reflected infrared light as red or orange , and treats other colors as a normal camera would. It does not do the actually false visible-light colors that Aerochrome does, but I think this is an advantage.
Love your updates. New Sub! Jason, @grainydays, shoots a lot of Aerochrome and like you wishes/hoping Kodak bring it back. Appreciate you for producing an outstanding piece on Aerochrome. Kudos.
I love how I recorded the video and liked the Black Sabbath cover better. I feel it’s a better example of aero chrome usage, and used that instead. It was a deliberate choice.
@@Overexposed1 I just found it amusing. Not as amusing as the video I watched where they posted a picture of Ronnie Montrose in place of Jim Mankey, but still pretty amusing. No offense was intended.
yes, lomo purple is a good substitute, albeit colour negative, C41 film; for more on this, see Jess Hobbs channel, where she compares this to metropolis as well, interesting quirk, that the Purple ONLY affects foliage (R\G) and NOT skin tone, and now you have explained why.
Remember, just because you use (rare, overpriced, overhyped, discontinued, wierd) film, doesn't make it art. Didn't you make a video like that just recently? HIE / Aerochrome was an expensive, wierd film when it was widely available, and we didn't all run out and shoot it. You did a good job presenting the past history of this BTW.
I really miss false colour IR Film. B&W IR film and full spectrum digital just isn't the same. The fridge still gas a couple of rolls but when its gone its gone ... 🦘
*sips flaming hot mountain dew*
😂
😂
I will be starting this February first.
🤣
Stuff will kill your sperm 😂
I would love to see aerochrome come back

You’re right that’s cooler!
Too busy sending it to con man zelinsky like the UK does too
just started learning about this. i do wish they could bring these back
Very interesting. I never knew this film was used in those famous album covers
Fascinating video interesting history of the development of the film stock thanks for sharing 👍🏻
Thanks for watching, friend!
Love this historical perspective and walk-through. Very nicely done an A+ on the accent 😛
Yee haw cowboy. Thanks for watchin’

Thanks so much for watching. Maybe we will get it back one day!
I wonder if there are any surviving recon shots taken during ww2 or afterwards. I have never seen one before.
Almost certainly in some us military archive
If you are a us citizen it might even be possible to request a copy as it by now should be declassified
Nice content ❤ , I hope Kodak aerochrome back again 😢
Thank you, me too!

I should have emphasized that I am talking about digital alternatives here.
Great info. Thanks for contributing!
Sigma is ..
U can get it with an modded camera and a yellow 12 (x-2 in russian filter sets) after shooting swap red and blue channel and set whitebalance
Was there a missing image at 6:28?
Yes I didn’t see it either 😮
I meant to add in a digital photo. I cut out a few seconds to make it flow better, the Lightroom tutorial is at the end! Thanks for pointing it out.
@@Overexposed1 loved the video either way! 👏🏻
I wish Kodak would make Aerochrome
Me too! The more options we have, the better
@@Overexposed1 yeah and also Film Ferrania and Fuji too.
@@Overexposed1 especially Fugu Film 400 I hope so
Kodachrome
@@arricammarques1955 I wish I could try it too

Thank you so much! I have a lot more on the way. Stay tuned!
And allegedly has his hands on a supply of a new aerochrome clone...
@@awittypseudonym2520 I want to know so unbelievably bad what the heck it is
@@awittypseudonym2520 He probably has authentic aerochrome and says it as a troll LOL
Yeah........ These optic/film companies had interesting wartime productions.
…looking at you Leica
don't forget the non photo companies Dow chemical, birds eye, Remington, and At&t. Also.obummer and Con man Zelinsky right now..
@@Overexposed1 it seems Leica helped.alot of people. Still can't justify what nonsense they make today and thier prices
how to load it in my camera
Lovely one, I still have few spools in the freezer.
I’m jealous! Thanks for watching
Thank goodness for kolari and sigma
I love how he mentions the Grateful Dead album covers, but posts a Black Sabbath album cover.

They are both terrible 😂 who cares? The grateful dead were CIA shills from Laurel Canyon.
I love colour infrared film
@grainydays is currently on a campaign by sipping flaming hot mountain dew to get this film back 😅
I agree with this! Time to do the Dew….
As an aside, Flamin Hot Dew is tough stuff.
Stuff is 🗑️ like con man zelinsky.
Did USSR have something similar to aerochrome?

Pronouns don't make you a artist either but here we are.😂
the original Lomochrome purple was good but these days... it's honestly just dogshit
Kodak will abandon film altogether within 5 years. Fuji already has. My fighter dominated for 11 rounds and is about to get KO'd in the 12th
Kodak "Airchrome"? That doesn't sound right.
I love RUclips.

You didn't explain how it killed people, though. Was it toxic or something? Or was it just because of the military application?
