- Don't let that tube of 5200 dry out, you can use this method to prolong the life of an open tube of 5200.
This has worked for me, but can't guarantee it will work for you. But if you are going to buy a tube and only use a small amount its worth a shot.
The best way to save a tube of 5200 is after use wipe the end of the tube. apply petroleum jelly (a.k.a. Vasaline) to the end of tube and inside the cap. screw cap back on and wipe off excess jelly. when ready to reuse just squeeze out a little to remove the jelly and have at it.
Nope, you can just add a ball of 52 to the end and always store in freezer!
One time I tried just squirting the whole tube into a quart ziploc bag and sealing it after squeezing out any remaining air.
I still have that solid block of 5200 and I use it to remove sawdust from sanding belts.
This tip is right on the money. I've also been using our vacuum food sealer to get as much air out of the bag as I can before I put it in the freezer. You guys that think putting a nail in the tube will work might as well put the nail in it and then throw the tube out. Because that's what you're going to do next time you try to use it. Been there.
Better yet, purge the air and put co2 in before vacume sealing.. keep the bottom of the bag down.. You do not need to totally vacume all the gas out..
If you are using RUSTLOC the amazing aluminized paint primer/sealer, do NOT open the can. Put 2 phillips head screws in the lid. take them off when decanting the paint into a clean cat food can. Put the screws back in right away.. It will last for YEARS.. Dont let the cat eat it though..
I like the foil idea. Did a search and someone said it gets air exposure from the back end also. $$$ I will be using foil such as you but will be hot gluing around the rim also. ... .. .On the end/plunger part I will brush some vaseline to seal the back, then evacuate in a plastic bag and refrigerate!! Wew, getting my money's worth !!
You are so lucky in US. In Croatia I have to order it on eBay and the total cost is 57 $
If I order from Amazon, it cost 80 $
Shipment and toll kills us over here
I just tape up the end of the applicator tip then put it in a food saver bag so its not exposed to air and put it in the fridge. Never found freezing it to be needed.
I tried to find screw on caps for after you remove the applicator but i think 3M purposely makes the tube thread an off size, i have tried many, i use a tight fitting rubber cap, ziplock bag both ends with elastic bands, then a large zip lock bag then in the refrigerator, got 2 years + out of last tube altho it was very hard to squeeze the gun lever but worked, longest i ever had an open tube
Haha thought I was the only one who knew about 5200 in the freezer!
You are the man! At $20 bucks a tube, resealing my motorhome windows after taking them out, this stuff shoulld keep me water free for as long as i live (I'm 54 y/0) this is some bad ass shit. There are two product lines that I've never known to be sorry: One , for clothes is NIKE. Think what you want about NIKE, and their use of Colin Kapernick, I don't care. I've never, ever bought a NIKE product that was sorry. And I've never bought a 3M product that was sorry. It is great that when some companies put their names on a product, whatever it is, that I can have complete faith in them that they will do their jobs. Sears Craftsman, a long time ago, used to be another, but now it is failing. It shames me.
Lteo Hrnt fuck off asshole
Leave a little dollop sticking out of the tube, put it in a gallon freezer bag and put it in the refrigerator.
Just dip both ends in melted candle wax. Both the tip, and the plunger seal. It will seal completely and last indefinitely.
I like your idea, im going to do that.
Glue gun would work as well
$36 in Canada. Thanks for the tip.
Hell yeah thanks brother
Thanks, I have been using a squeeze tube (a little goes a long way) and I end up drilling through the end cap to reuse some more adhesive. I tried Saran wrap type and a pencil eraser to plug the hole with limited success. seems as if I still have to drill into the cap end np matter what. I love the stuff and it is worth the effort to use it. I do wonder if the freezing has any affect on strength (likely not). Also, will 5200 work to patch an innertube? I think it will, if a rubber patch is sealed to the inner tube with 5200. Amazing stuff.
I found the foil works best for me. Hmm not sure how it would do on a tube.. may be to much shrinking when deflated for it to hold but you never know it's some tough stuff. Freezing doesn't appear to effect its strength.
i like the aluminum foil idea, however it's likely the freezing it would do more harm than good.
I just vacuum seal it with my food vacuum sealer.
You can put a small balloon over the top n that works great
Great idea! Thank you very much for your help!
Awesome idea! I can use the aluminum foil idea elsewhere as well.
Great vid, thanks. Do you mean the freezer or the fridge?
I use the freezer
Nice idea
👍. Great information
Thanks a lot! A good advise!
Very useful tips, thank you.
Shrink wrap or vaccum bag, then freezer
what sealant do u recommend for a genoa deck rail. thx
Pray for anyone that has to work on anything after 5200 is applied 🥺
Why’s that? Can I use it for fiberglass bath tub hairline cracks?
@@BT-bx1un because it's non workable and stronger than most materials it can bond with. On a tub I believe it would still trap dirt like any chaulk like material.
@@Snarf_Le_Wombatshould I use something else instead? Need to make it until January then replacing it. What would you recommend using?
@@BT-bx1un oh yeah it'll be the most permanent temporary fix, just don't let it get down the drain, they even sell a marine version that sets up underwater
Thanks for the tip
Thanks the BEST TIPS ! ! 😆 👌 😊 😊 😊 😊
Cool man I’m gonna run outside to my trash bin and grab my half and tube and do this before it seizes up on me. I figured chalk it up to a loss it’s gonna go off and be ruined come hell or high water
That’s why they sell the little tube😏
It’s $60 at Napa now.
I always just ah use an old paper towel and stick er in the hole. Works like ah charm ya'll 👍
