In this video we are going to show you how to change replace the timing belt on a VW 1.8T Engine. We demonstrated on a 2000 VW Jetta 1.8 Turbo but it will be the same for VW Golf, VW BORA, and some Seat and Skoda Vehicles.
It is not as complicated as people think, we demonstrated by marking the old spots with paint so we do not worry about skipping a tooth. If you accidentally removed the timing belt or you are rebuilding an engine, on the transmission side there is a cap that you can look at find tdc mark on the flywheel. Some vehicles differ because of the models and years but it will be close procedure.
This procedure should work for:

This is by far the best instructional video on the web for changing the 1.8t timing belt.
still is in 2020
Make that 2021
2024 and still the best
Guys, this tutorial is absolutely briliant. Thanks so much for doing this - it made changing the belt and water pump on my '02 SEAT Leon a breeze.
Right to it! Love these types of videos..without a lot of conjecture and filler conversation!
Thanks for your help!!!
I recommend using the flywheel timing mark as well. It's right on top of the transmission side.
Respect to anyone who changes an interference engine timing belt.
You should make a troubleshooting video, so if someone's car is out of time and happened to skip a tooth before doing the repair, they can put everything back in correct timing. :)
That was awesome. You and your crew made it look effortless. You guys didn't make me feel like it was over my head. Just like diy videos should be.
Cool accent too.
Since I got a mk1 TT you've helped immensely. You don't miss anything in your videos, they're really practical and to the point. Thanks a lot and cheers from England.
Wow... this timing belt is nuts! And I agree, these guys were amazing!
Best video online. Thank you folks
This was and awesome video! I searched for 30mins for the perfect video to follow while performing this repair. These guys did a great job of laying out all the steps in perfect detail. Made this job very easy to follow.
Best video ive managed to find on the timing belt for a 1.8T. Thank you guys!! Mine is getting done tomorrow now with the same kit! :D
Very good video! Finally one that explains all in detail leaving me with no questions and all of the know how to confidently complete the job! Thanks you guys! Saving me a lot of money.
Great video and in my honest opinion its the best 1.8t t-belt video ... and i think ive watched all of them .made so easy to understand and follow.. keep up the good work .. cheers ..........
Thank you very much for this video! I am in the process of gathering as much knowledge from different sources on how to change a timing belt (and the water pump etc.) from my Audi TT. I found a great write up, but nothi9ng beats a simple yet visually effective video. Thank you!
amazing video guys, bravo! I was told I had to remove the front bumper. Thanks a lot! I get to do this in my spare time.
Extremely helpful. Very clear and easy to follow!!! Thanks!!!!!
I am literally using this video to do a VW GLI 1.8T timing belt and and water pump.
Thank you for making this video
did you have trouble getting the engine mount bracket out because of the turbo coolant after run pump line
that came on that engine?
If the Timing belt breaks while the car is running does it mess up the head?
Very much so yes. It's an interference engine.
Yes. You’ll be out an engine
I love your videos, it’s very nice explained & straight to the point and you show every aspect that needs to be touched. Everything that needs to be done for my GTi, thanks
Best video.. wrote down each step one by one. Now I can tackle this job. Thanks man
Done!!! 4.5hrs for completion. I want to thank you guys for this great instructional video. For the most part all you need is basic tool. Before you start however make sure you have a 6mm and 8mm Allen wrench socket for the crank pulley and the tensioner pulley.
definitely best tutorial for vag 1.8t
That is a great help because I have to change my timing belt on my Audi TT thank you
thanks for the best clear video. im gonna change my timming belt and acessories on audi TT :) thanks
Wow what a video, great clear instructions man. I feel 100% confident in moving forward now
Amazing video, very helpful and well explained!
best video on jetta timing belt replacement. I wonder why they didn't use a timing chain? what is up with removing so much crapola. Shiezz.
Great video. Good attention to detail without being boring or tedious. That's tough to do:)
Awesome!! everything I needed to know! Going to do this job during the coming week.
Good work fellas, took me a few hours on the Octavia Vrs but followed this and everything was good, cheers.
How many hours is a few? going to be changing mine next weekend

Thanks a lot for the great video - I followed this video replacing my belt today - and it went very smooth and well - the video is very helpful and accurate - thanks! Best regards Jarl - only issue I had was the engine side engine bracket - that piece of metal is a pain to get back in
Jarl Hansen how long did it take
I was on a 4 point lift and it took me 10 hours (did lots of cleaning to shields and the block also)
Really love you video! Very well filmed ! Cheers
Muy bueno saludos desde San Luis Argentina
great video guys
Good job very professional
Thanks to this video I saved myself $350 they were charging me for labor.
Great guide, thank you.
Amazing video very very helpful great job
Muchas gracias excelente video...
Very very good video I enjoy it very good information when mine is due I'll give it ago I think I can do it more easy than you think the line up marks are they already mark on the wheels ?
Bad ass video!! Thank you!!
you can reset the tensioner with a c clamp or a vice if you have one that it will fit in
bonito video aprendi mucho gracias
Thanks 🙏 for the video bro👍
Awesome video!
Great video!
very helpful thank you
Great video thank you 1.8 turbo golf is the same
I LOVE THIS
Awesome awesome video.
Wish you showed video of actual belt being dressed over idler, water pump and crank. Thats the tricky part, dressing the belt while maintaining TDC marks on cam and crank. Otherwise great video, and you noted its a 4 crank engine so if belt on correctly then easily hand turn crank 4 times and if no resistance felt (valve hitting head) then your good. If resistance is felt, that means valve is touching piston dome.
Great job
Good video, easy to follow. For jewelry men, you know your shit👍
Fantastic tutorial!! I'm kinda stuck on removing the 4 Allen bolts on the crank pulley though 🥺😵 they are absolutely solid, I've tried everything I have to hand to remove but nada 😭🙏
Ah cancel that lol I managed to use my air compressor and air gun to rattle it out thank god haha
Thanks guys
@20:25 You have to love the green non VW/Audi coolant in the engine falling out.
That's exactly what I thought. :D
you said on the video you'd have the specs on the camshaft i believe id like to know more on this matter
Great video. Glad I didn't smell your FART at 16:12. LMFAO. Made my night while doing the timing belt on my 2003 Jetta 1.8t
You KNOW shit is getting real when the chains come off 🤣 Awesome video
What if, during your installation with the belt off, you move a sprocket by accident? eg. you are trying to put the belt on from the bottom, but it's so tight at the top that you accidentally move the crank sprocket left a bit. What then? Is it ok to just take the belt off and rotate the crank sprocket right until the markings at the crank align?
if you change position1 teeth that will be a problem. dont take risks, remove belt and align again to the marks before apply the new belt
that looks easy it took me 2.50hr to pull everything out
after you put everything back you said you gotta turn it to make sure nothing is hitting anything you said to go two revolutions does that mean pass the mark you make ones and then stop the second time and leave it there?
I'm having so much h trouble installing the new hydraulic tensioner, please help!!
Could yous do a clutch replacement video on the 1.8t
Nice review.. do you have the OEM parts number? thanks
Good video but you didn't show how to put the mount back in ... The Bora i work on always gives me alot of trouble getting it back in
Yeah how do u get the engine bracket out and back in once everything in on and timed, ya Skipped the hardest part of the job.
That a clean engine, do you have a video on how you did that?
Hahaha
Please tell me how you got the 2 biggest bolts to the motor mounts out, I have heated with a torch and used an impact and still have only got one bolt. The other will not budge for the life of me. Breaker bar and impact with torch will not work
What if your timing is off and that's why you're opening it up and replacing the belt? How do you determine the correct placement for the camshaft so it's timed properly with the crank?
Easy. Take out #1 cylinder spark plug. Rotate crank and with a long extension, verify TDC ( #1 will be at highest point )
I can't get the lower part of the engine mount out. Been messing with it for an hour.
I'm fixing to get into a 2000 Volkswagen Jetta, 1.8 T. I'm down to the crank pulley and it not a 6mm allen head. It's a torx bit, and 6mms is definitely not the right size... Can anyone help me with this? Cause I tried to break it loose with the closest torx I had to fit it. I've not rounded out anything, but could someone tell me what size it's supposed to be?
Thanks in advance,
Do you need to move the tensioner pulley or align it with anything? How do you know there is enough tension?
the hidraulic tensioner do that job. just align to the best tension possible
Will this be the same for water pump 2005 cow Jetta gli
👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
@world mechanics i have a question what if there is an error in the timing set up how do i re adjust it i have a 2003 jetta 1.8t thanks in advance
removing the belt and setting the cranckshaft and camshaft to the marks as shown
Do you have an oil leak?
If u got over when lining up at the top can u spin it for a second time to line correctly at the top
You have the wrong coolant in your engine!!!!
Good ol' green stuff is not good for VW/Audis
Thanks for the video, although I think I could do this I will pay my mechanic its just too much work
si sos mexicano en español amigoooo!! jaja
Lost my timimg on the bottom and didnt draw/paint any on
. What do I do?
I realize this was 5 months ago, but if you watch the video, and I've watched a lot, there a little stub on the bottom pulley that should point or line up with the bolt hole, if that makes any sense. Pause it at 16:23, and look at the bottom right of the gear, you'll see the little stub I'm talking about, that lines up with the bolt hole over to the right of it.
As long as your cam gear is at TDC at the top, and that is lined up on the bottom, you should be pretty set. Otherwise you'd need to put the cover back on, as well as the second cover, and make sure they're aligned together as well. Which they should be if these parts are lined up, it'll only really fit one way, then re mark your mark on the bottom.
Nice video and explanation, just one thing you put the timing belt the wrong way, the letters of the reference and brand marked on the belt should be facing you
Doesn't matter unless there is an arrow indicating a direction.
Yes the bolts got round didnt juse machine there where like no chance to get them off clean wtf did vw service chance the belt 5 years ago but not the bolts. Im not sure did they even chance it.
whe i changed the of an audi 1.8 t 1997 wasgone the time i was what did i did wron thank you
All 1.8's, vw jetta, & beetle, should be non interference. The ones with turbo, 1.8, should still be non interference, whether turbo or non turbo. 1.8 liter.
Only up to 1998. After that they are interference engines. Stop spreading bullhockey.
👍👍👍👍👍👍🇵🇱🇵🇱🇵🇱🇵🇱🇵🇱🇵🇱
