@Duitslond I like the $ I get from people clicking their ads. Beyond that if you have the money they look like a decent outfit for getting specific training quickly. Most tech's don't make HUGE money- so I'd recommend learning while being paid if possible and using the net to learn for free if you can. Otherwise you could end up with a pile of debt you don't want or blowing savings that may take years to rebuild.
@09victoryrc They're factory coated to resist corrosion. Honda does the same thing, but they use green. Mitsubishi often uses a pink variant of the same thing.
@watcbd The wire they use is really poor quality. Check the wiring in the door jam on the drivers door of your car. It will be cracked on the insulation and likely even broken. Dodge, Mercedes Benz and Volkswagen all use that garbage wiring.
ABSOLUTELY. He is the only candidate that has the character, experience, and integrity to serve as commander in chief. The others have nothing to offer to the country, only to themselves and their puppet masters that hold their strings. If you want a sovereign nation Ron Paul is your man.Gary Johnson is the only other one even close. The same clowns that push to debase the US into a New World Order own the media. If the media doesn't give time to a candidate it's because he isn't for sale.
I understand that it's statistically improbable. I also understand what happened to Andrew Jackson when he went up against the bank as well as Abraham Lincoln and John F. Kennedy. If Ron Paul is willing to walk that path, the least we can do is support him. I have respect and admiration for him. I can't say that about the other candidates.
I have no experience working on cars. other than changing the oil or a tire. I need to change the timing belt on a 2004 2.0 VW Beetle. is this something I can do by watching your videos or should I go to a professional? thank you in advance
Brian - I have a small problem. My kids car stopped running (sheared teeth on a 2003 VW Jetta) I have the new parts. And chose to do the install myself. And here is my problem. I know where the timing mark in and the indicator is for the CAM but I do not know how to line up the Crank. I will assume the crank indicator is the small tab or dowel pin like entity that fits into the harmonic balance pulley how ever I do not know the exact location of that timing make. From what I can read, the # 1 piston needs to be TDC (top dead center) in the cylinder. But is this on the intake side or the exhaust side of the stroke? I want to make sure that its not 180 degrees off because I really could damage valves if they haven't already been damaged. The car died while pulling into a parking spot and not under a high RPM. Can you help me with locating the CRANK and the CAM?
You're welcome. The cam wheel at the top rotates once for every two times the bottom pulley (harmonic balancer) rotates once. So you could have the HB lined up and be off one pi radians on the cam wheel. (180 degrees)
I suspect my pump is bad but my thermostat opens at 87 degrees, because I flushed the system and my upper hose gets hot but when I squeeze it it feels like it has air. Car doesn't overheat when driving/idling. Is a 2.0 golf. Fans quick in too. Any ideas? I'm not using Oem coolant.
Set the head on it's exhaust studs on your work bench so the valves don't get bent and install the cam and align the mark on the bench. You can take it back off for ease of install.
EXCELLENT job and thorough explanation every step of the way!!! I have been a wrench for over thirty years. I have watched many videos and you sir are at the top. GREAT JOB and keep the great videos coming.
Check around for a shop that will do it with the parts you provide. I bought the whole kit from OEM parts and saved about $500 on the job and also replaced the thermostadt at the same time--was included with the kid including the coolant too--gotta use special coolant and only DISTILLED water. Great video by the way!
yup thats a vw allright. same piece of shit they made on skoda ,thats just easyer cus of space ,vw always was the crappyes piece of shit ,and fotunatly kept the badest for them self,( can you tell i hate vw)
As far as my two cents I would not recommend buying a Bug. I drive one and have had several electrical issues. One that’s annoying is whenever it’s extremely hot outside you lose the electrical connection to your turn signals (Even after using silicon dielectric compound.) Also I’ve had several problems with the Anti-Theft unit going off and my dash acting funny. Before the Bug I drove a Ford escort ZX2 for 170,000 miles with very few problems my bug has 22,000 and has already been a big pain.
I didn't win the Megamillions so I later tried for the Superlotto and everything was perfect, the pot was at $9 Million, it was the 9th of November, and 3 squared is 9 so I bot a ticket but I didn't win. Now I'm taking the water pump off and it looks like some good tips at the end of this video.
Question, why are the bolts light blue ? And I noticed the threads they go into are blue also !aluminum castings with blue thread inserts ? Something new ? Anti seize ? Never saw threads inserted into a casting ,usually it's just a threaded casting or a hole . Thanks, cool vids.
My harmonic balancer has a rounded off and generally knackered bolt on it, and the engine mounting is practicaly inacessable and I can't find out what size the bolts are to get it out, can you help me and tell me what size they were on your beetle, thanks.
nicely done... too much work for me. Id rather pay someone to do it. overall how much time does it take and Im sure its recommended to do the water pump while youre there anyway right? flat rate how many hours. once source told me 2.5?
you can actually just get a bolt shrinker and if you cant find one of those you can just wrap it in aluminium foil and throw it in the microwave for 2 min on low and it will go back to its original state hope this helps have a nice day
Amazed that no one has commented in the fact that the motor mount bolt are stretch bolts are are not designed to be tightened twice.. Trust me its a pain when one breaks off flush with the block and you have to extract it
Looks pretty tough. I do have a Haynes manual too. Today is Thursday so maybe tomorrow I'll win the Megamillions and I won't have to do my own repairs. The jackpot is $32 million right now.
wigs1098, if the metal impellers are failing more often than the plastic one's, what's failing on them.... are they coming apart like the plastic one's do? I'm just an owner and not a shop mechanic so I would very much like to know... thanks!
GREAT video!! you saved me $850. I used your video every step of the way, I have close to none mech. skills and this was actually not that bad. Thanks!!
Just for anyone who cares, the TB tensionner on a 1.8 turbo consists of a hydraulic tensionner that you pull a pin on to release the tension. That bears on an excentric roller similar the one in the video but without the pin-holes. You can pre-tension it with a regular socket so you don't need the special tool and the hydraulic thing keeps it in pressing against the timing belt..
I'm currently doing a 99 2.0 beetle. I'm confused where alldata says to turn back the crankshaft slightly. Now the crankshaft marking is off a tooth, maybe a tooth and a half and I'm a bit worried I have no idea why they say to do this. I was happy just leaving the crankshaft the way it was I didn't move anything on the reinstall. I was thinking of putting it back in alignment was hoping you had any input. Thanks.
I finished my timing belt too and I thought everything was great but I didn't check the tire pressure in my front tires and I must have bottomed out. Noticed the transmission fluid leaking and called the tow truck. Sucks to be me.
Hi Brian how are you!!!!!!!!! im really excited I will do the timing and water pump in my 01 jetta 1.8T one thing i would like to know is how the belt tensioner work!!!! when i put back the belt!!!!!! is the only thing im afraid!!!!!! hope you can give me some orientation!!!!! and how tight the belt should be????
@briansmobile1 Thanks,I never noticed that before. I did this same job on my first car years ago, A 77 VW rabbit, looks like the same nonsense.have a good new years !
You can use tapered pins from a hardware store and a screwdriver on the tensioner instead of the special spanner wrench. Ditto on the dumb design for the motor mount. The old VW Rabbits/Golfs had a much easier setup where you could change out the timing belt without touching the motor mount (though it was a PITA to remove the motor mount).
I was nervous to tackle this job because I have heard you needed special tools to lock the cam and crank in place during the belt change. But after seeing you do this I now see this job is not really that big of a deal to do. But still looks like it would take many hours to complete. No worse than changing the timing chain on an old school V8, which I have done many times. THANKS for the video... I'm subscribed to this channel now!!!! keep up the good work!!!!
I'm having trouble removing the harmonic balancer. The bolts are froze (unless they are reverse which I don't think is the case). But I've already stripped the hex out of one. Any suggestions? I've soaked them with penatrating oil already. Help. Also, is it necessary to fully remove the engine mount bracket or can you get the timing belt around it?
Nice video but not far enough. The timing marks, Cam yes got it. How about flywheel and crank sprocket . Broken belt skipped belt damaged motor all that stuff. Really like the pointer.
Great video! I was wondering if someone could tell me if the 4 small bolts on the crank pulley are reverse thread or not. Having a hard time getting those off and wanted to check on the threading before I go to a more powerful impact gun. Also I am not seeing a mark that is supposed to be on the flywheel (Manual tranny) but i probably won't need that once I get that crank pulley off and can use that mark. Thanks!
Hi Brian, where are you located? the coolant light keeps blinking red in my beetle but there is coolant already. I already got it fixed once but I am having the same problem again.
I looked through several similar videos before finding the information I needed at the very end of yours. How to seal the O-ring. I usually use grease. You recommended silicone spray. I'll try it. Thanks!
hey bro just wanna ask I got leak but I need to move and my car is a 2002 1.8t gti golf vw and my question is u think it will mess up if I drive it a 1 1/2 hour drive so let me know u think it will hold if I stop put water and cool it down let me know please thanks
Thanks Brian, one question, I have damaged valves and a different head was purchased, what is the best way to do the TDC since I cannot align before removing the old head, Thanks
Add to your title: 2.0 8v engine. There are many engine combinations on those VW models. Good video!
yes!

@chrisnjenny100407 Yep the whole cooling system was a mess. The fan quit and the rest took some abuse and was too old to take it.
I understand that it's statistically improbable. I also understand what happened to Andrew Jackson when he went up against the bank as well as Abraham Lincoln and John F. Kennedy. How stubborn and picky are you? These attributes help for not giving up till it's perfect.
@ramseyst42 It's pretty decent from a business perspective. The White Truck Company would have done something more popular and reliable.

It depends on the mechanic and the quality of the work. They are usually about $400 but again, it depends on the mechanic.
@kary1982v6 ESPECIALLY if you want to even TRY filming ; )
@hp11208 Thanks!
EXCELLENT job and thorough explanation every step of the way!!! I have been a wrench for over thirty years. I have watched many videos and you sir are at the top. GREAT JOB and keep the great videos coming.
Thanks much for the video. Not exactly step-by-step but it's quick and very informative and totally helped.
Dansyoutube you must have the same shitty cars I do haha
the mechanic shop wants $650 for a timing belt replacement I'm really considering doing it my self for under $150
Check around for a shop that will do it with the parts you provide. You're welcome! I fly all electrics Trex 450pro, 500ESP, and 600E
how much does it cost to change timing belt and water pump?
the full kit runs about 130-150
Thanks. It's nice to get positive feedback like that.

One question: Do you work on cars from your home garage or is it a separate place?
Great videos. Thanks..

How long did it take you?
@jbone2470 You're welcome my friend!
I'd tried the harbor freight adjustable spanner, NO FIT ...the pins need to be a smidge smaller to use for tensioner.
You're welcome- I'm pleased you liked it so much. : )
@MeowJW It's a separate building.
Way to go! You're welcome!
You're welcome! Thanks for being grateful!
@killman1971 Good to know. You're a smart man!
Information is good
Camera work and organization is terrible
Shaky and disconnected
Please redo thanks
german engineering ... look at the width or the inner seal on the water pump. GMs arent made that way....
MOST OF THEM DOESEEEEE WHY ARE WE YELLING/MISSES SPELLING?
Thanks. And you're welcome!

what yr is the beetle and is it non or interference engine? thz
Idk I'm still sketchy about me doing it .....
You're welcome- thanks for that!

Ya made the mistake of removing the engine mount bracket.
pain to put fenders on and pray the torx dont stripe
"Like" for helping me change the timing belt on my dads beetle. "Like" again for the Ron Paul sign!
Welcome- glad to help!
nice, the easiest i ever done was a golf i think.
doesn't 1 cylinder have to be at TDC?
2003 MAZDA DOES IT HAVE NONINTEREACES HEAD
I finished my timing belt too and I thought everything was great but I didn't check the tire pressure in my front tires and I must have bottomed out. Noticed the transmission fluid leaking and called the tow truck. Sucks to be me.
Hi Brian how are you!!!!!!!!! im really excited I will do the timing and water pump in my 01 jetta 1.8T one thing i would like to know is how the belt tensioner work!!!! when i put back the belt!!!!!! is the only thing im afraid!!!!!! hope you can give me some orientation!!!!! and how tight the belt should be????
My Mk2 Polo is 3 clips and a bolt to get the timing belt off. Older VWs are awesome.
Yay, another Ron Paul supporter!
hi do u have any mk4 jetta repairs? Thanks!
@briansmobile1 Thanks,I never noticed that before. I did this same job on my first car years ago, A 77 VW rabbit, looks like the same nonsense.have a good new years !

THANKS for the video... I'm subscribed to this channel now!!!! keep up the good work!!!!
Nice job, Brian. For sure, I like watching these even though I'll never own a bug. Somehow I thought the engine was in the back, ha ha.
The engine is in the back in old models.
You're welcome!
Do you have to have an engine hoist to replace the water pump and timing belt? Its an 04 beetle
I would also like to note that the camshaft timing is perfectly aligned and so is the transmission flywheel tab for TDC on cyl. numbero uno.
dang, I've got to do a 1.8 water pump. Are they highly similar?
Love all the videos btw!
🔥🔥🔥🔥👍🙏
Sure put alot of crap in the way just to do what should be a simple job...
Nice video! But Ron Paul? Really?
Nice video but not far enough. The timing marks, Cam yes got it. How about flywheel and crank sprocket . Broken belt skipped belt damaged motor all that stuff. Really like the pointer.
Thx Brian. You help me a lot with your video... they should never do plastic propeller for a water pump... damn it!
Nice video , but I think I'm going to the dealer for this. They give $100 off coupon.
I already got it fixed once but I am having the same problem again.
how do you align the camshaft when you start the job? by turning crankshaft clockwise with the belt on?
What tools do I need to rent at the auto parts store
I love the idea of the clip to hold the belt.. that is awesome!
Finished the job just now. She started right up. Thanks again!
Video may be a little rough, but the information is GREAT!!!! THANK YOU, I REALLY appreciate you making this.
I looked through several similar videos before finding the information I needed at the very end of yours. How to seal the O-ring. I usually use grease. You recommended silicone spray. I'll try it. Thanks!

Now that I have watched the video I will do it for $12000.
Thanks Brian, one question, I have damaged valves and a different head was purchased, what is the best way to do the TDC since I cannot align before removing the old head, Thanks
Very good,I like the water pump rotate to remove, and thank you for the tools and sizes, this is what I wanted to know,Thank you
Man o man ! this video kicks ass ! Saved me a bunch of time by watching it. Thanks brainsmobile1 !
Thanks for the video!!! this is what I needed to know
