    I found it much easier to install the tensioner last...put one bolt in, rotate it into place and secure it with the 2nd bolt...doing it this way, you are not fighting the belt, pulleys or alignment of the timing marks at all. once it's all lined up, pull the pin on the tensioner and you're done. I just did it to my daughters '05 1.8T ragtop and am getting ready to do it again this weekend on another '05 1.8T ragtop I bought over the weekend.

    I wish cars could be designed to be simpler to maintain and service. Having a car that can be easy to maintain and service will thus ensure it lasts longer, and therefore be more environmentally friendly. All this talk about electric cars is not the issue. The biggest environmental impact is in the actual making of the car. Having a car, keeping it and maintaining it rather than simply replacing it when it becomes too expensive to maintain is the real saving to the environment. A great video that will help keep these beetles on the road for years to come.

      How to Automotive, with regards to the video, it might help an awful lot of people if you could mention any differences in changing the new beetle timing belts / water pump for the various new beetle models and engine sizes. For example is changing the timing belt on a 1.4 litre engine on a 2009 new beetle model any easier?

    I'm trying to do this repair but I am having a hard time getting the crankshaft pulley and the camshaft pulley at TDC at the same time. This is a new to me car but I can tell the timing belt has been replaced before (napa brand belt). Is it possible that the crankshaft pulley wasn't put on right from previous mechanic? Any help would be appreciated.Thanks

    Awesome tutorial! Almost invaluable in fact, but i wanted to add a couple things from my experience for those doing this for the first time. Getting the motor mount at the angle you have it at in the video at 15:27 (which is almost mandatory to reach both tensioner bolts with relative ease), the motor has to be at just the right height in relation to the car by lifting or lowering a bit with the jack. You may also need to pull the Air Conditioner line (above the mount in the video at 15:27) away a bit to let the motor mount rotate up. the AC line will then prob pinch the mount against the engine block but that will help hold it out of the way while you get the tensioner bolts started. i put the belt on before the tensioner- which was fairly easy and i held the belt in place with some cardboard folded to pinch the belt around the crank and another at the top of the cam - pinched between the belt and top of valve cover - then i used a zip tie around the lower edge of the cam sprocket to hold the arm of the idler puller up- and also help hold the belt in place - then the tensioner: i put the lower tensioner bolt in, then top bolt. there will be some tension to get the top bolt in - but i could pull the top of the tensioner easy enough to get the top bolt started by hand. Side note, There is a hole in the motor mount that goes clear thru to the upper tensioner bolt.

    how long did it take to do this repair? also, I am having to do my ac condensor and compressor, i think its best I go ahead do the timing belt , water pump and pulley's at the same time since I will have the front of the car apart, will having the car front end off drastically reduce the labor time to to do this?

    Awesome video! Thanks! That engine mount is giving me a hell of a time on an 03 wolfsburg and this system might just work! There is surely no way to get that mount out of the wolfsburg so working around it and removing the hydraulic tensioner will hopefully work.I am wondering if I did any damage to the pcv/vac lines or driver side engine mount or lower center mount while thoroughly lowering and raising the engine in an attempt to remove that son of a gun. I also thought you needed a tensioner bolt and pin to remove the hyd. ten. but it should be ok to attempt w/o? Thanks again!

      Sheldon Kolter i've done lots of these jobs in the driver side mount will be OK. And working around the mountain is pretty much the only way. If you can put on a new tensioner. Thank you for watching!

    • @MatthewSemones
      @MatthewSemones 6 лет назад

      I am pretty sure you are off on that labor assessment. My shop charges $70/hr and I am pretty sure that's not a 21-hour job. Also, keep in mind that being disabled means you can not physically do certain things or doing them causes a lot of pain. After looking into the matter the process should cost between $380 and $890 parts and labor included (best and worst case scenario).
