  • How to clean the throttle body assembly from a Volkswagen Golf Mk4 (03). Make sure the engine is off for this process, but that the battery is on for turning the valve. This should be routine maintenance.

    Just a thought, as I have a MKIV as well. If you install a small oil catch can in the PCV line, you can eliminate a lot of the oil that contaminates the throttle bore. Also, you'll notice a lot of oil contamination in the intake runner from the air filter. I pulled my intake to clean the injectors after 118,000 miles and 11 years. A lot of sludgy oil in the intake portion bolted to the head. Then I installed the catch can and it works very, very well. I used an inline filter that already has the 3/4" barbs that fit the PCV hose..Jabsco 36200-0000 In-Line Strainer and two clamps. Good video, thanks.

    Just did this to my 04 Jetta (GLS, gas. Not a TDI or turbo). P.S. DO NOT START THE CAR. JUST HAVE THE KEY IN ON POSITION.. AND USE A TOOTHBRUSH / MICRO FIBER CLOTH.. DO NOT USE PAPER TOWEL / TOILET PAPER OR WHATEVER.. I was getting horrible gas mileage before, and upon cleaning the throttle body, I was surprised to see a giant blob of black gunk behind the plate. After cleaning and putting it back together my milage went from 400km a full tank to 550 in the city.

    • @Zodliness

      Remove the air filter, and two attached breather hoses from the air filter box, then the throttle body assembly resides at the top right of the engine, without having to remove any other parts. Be careful not to spray too much fluid into the throttle body housing. clean with a non lint based cloth spray cloth with fluid, NOT tissue or loose fibre cotton. The most important part of the cleaning is to ensure you clear any obstruction from the horizontal lip that the gate sit almost touching when idling, without the right gap space between valve body and valve edge, the engine cannot breathe causing the fluctuating rpm.

  • @eb121209
    @eb121209 6 лет назад +8

    You remove the throttle body and clean it properly.
    If the TB is on the car, you do NOT spray that cleaner into the TB and you do NOT use a paper towel. You use a microfiber towel and spray the cleaner onto the towel.

    guys help...I am dealing with "throttle counter" problems according to the code reading...I added the cleaning stuff to the gas in the tank but the problem seems to be getting worse...i'm thinking whether it is because of the cleaning I added or is the throttle counter just dying away...is there a way to clean it by hand..or check if its really dirt on the insiide that is killing it?

    • @Zodliness
      @Zodliness 6 лет назад +1

      Any contaminant has the potential to cause damage, many small items that find their way into a cylinder can cause damage over time, or burn on and create carbonised hot spots, that can also lead to a burn through of the piston head/s in extreme cases. Chemical cleaners can strip the cylinders oil layer and cause long term damage to the cylinder liners.

    Many of the comnents I have read are at best thoughtless, and at worst somewhat devoid of common sense. As most of you may know, do not treat this as any definitive answer, as in the first instance the throttle body can be housed in and mounted to the engine differently, secondly and very importantly many of the latest mk4 models do not even have mass airflow sensors, so don't waste time overcomplicating things, as many of your cars may not even have one. My car had the same problem and then some as it was so bad the car would go into something like a limp mode if trying to accelerate from stationary position or very low speeds. All I did was to remove air filter, turn ignition to second position, wedged the accelerator pedal, then sprayed throttle body cleaner, (carb cleaner) directly into throttle body, and it's run perfectly ever since. Maybe stating the obvious but I would also check plugs, filters and all things related, and imo I would always begin troubleshooting with cheapest potential fix and work upwards, as most mechanics will offer the oblivious the dearest fix. Finally, if only people employed a little basic common sense when putting up these demos under the guises of informing others, as there are many variations of this car irrespective of when they were made, so indicating the 'specific' model seems like a 'no brainer'.

    • @klepsidratech5557
      @klepsidratech5557 3 года назад +1

      I'd say it's most likely that the cleaner + the soot/grime will end up in the cat, and reduce its lifespan. It sounds bad but but I don't see where else it could go on the closed exhaust system.

    • @Zodliness
      @Zodliness 6 лет назад

      Misfires are caused primarily by any of three potential issues, Crank timing sensor - Throttle body contaminated or faulty - and most likely Plug packs and or spark plugs need checking/cleaning, or renewing. First two are cheap fixes, the last around £30 per plug pack.

    hey i just purchased a 2002 vw beetle. After about an hour on the highway, the car stalled and i cranked the car a few times and it started. I drove another 20 mins and it happened again. It does it randomly now and then. What are the isses, i don't think it's gas or fuel pump. I runs great and is arching out from a bad plug wire but is fine. I have to fix that wire too. I've read about the crank position sensor, Idle speed control or maybe my distributor is worm from the arching. I'll clean my MAF but don't think that's it.you've done these cars 100 times over, what do you think. it runs great ,on the highway going 60mph and it just stalls.

    1) DISCONNECT YOUR BATTERY (SAFETY FIRST)
    2) REMOVE THE AIRFLOW BOX
    3) DISCONNECT THE DUCTS FROM THE THROTTLE
    4) REMOVE 4 ALLEN TYPE SCREWS FROM THE THROTTLE
    5) REMOVE THE THROTTLE (be careful with the gasket, unless you have a new one)
    6) FREELY (avoid any sensor or in this case the black plastic area of the throttle)APPLY THROTTLE OR INTAKE CLEANER TO THE METAL AREAS
    7) WITH A CLEAN MICROFIBER CLOTH START TO CLEAN UNTIL THROTTLE IS FREE OF DIRT IN BOTH SIDES.
    8) CHECK AND CLEAN WITH THE SAME CLEANER AND CLOTH THE DUCT THAT CONNECTS TO THE THROTTLE AND THE AREA THAT THE THROTTLE IS ATTACHED.
    9) RECONNECT EVERYTHING AND TURN ON THE VEHICLE (leave it for about 10 minutes).
    10) UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES DO THIS WITH THE BATTERY CONNECTED, IT COULD DAMAGE ANY RELATED SENSOR OR THE COMPUTER (this guy was lucky), ALSO, AVOID USING PAPER TOWEL AND NEVER EVER TRY TO CLEAN THE THROTTLE WHILE THE CAR IS ON.

    • @Zodliness
      @Zodliness 6 лет назад +1

      DO NOT run the vehicle while applying throttle body cleaner. You should only turn the key to the accessory position, so the throttle body valve responds to the peddle being operated. It's way easier to clean when it's open, without having to remove the entire throttle body assembly. I was once told by a wise and old mechanic, DO NOT open the mechanism by hand. Also allow the excess fluid to evaporate before restarting the engine. It's inclined to break down the oil seal within the cylinder and around the piston rings, especially if you spray too much fluid into the engine.
