That's definitely less labor-intensive than the buttonhole stitch! Is the whipstitch more historically accurate than the buttonhole, or "just" a more practical technique for ridiculously busy sewists?
It is actually historically accurate. It is used in the all the way into the 19thc century. I don't believe you actually see another stitch being used until the eyelet becomes stitched mechanically.
