I don't have to finish watching your videos Haine, before I immediately hit that like button, because the thought process behind your videos are so remarkably informational and interesting every time. There's no need to wonder, you are an asset to us all who are into Sorcery Contested Realm. What an awesome video! Now I'll head to my kitchen table and crack open my first beta box here in Norway. I ordered it from TC and got it on my doorstep monday morning. I have been itching to open the two boxes I ordered, but I promised to wait until my younger brother came for a visit today. So... It's time! Thanks!
Very interesting, I was very sure that the new Erik’s Curiosa cards in Beta was printed in Beta. Thanks for the video! Super interests very well presented!
Great video, Haine. Once again. Thanks! My only concern with printing alpha Curiosa's in Beta is, when LGS's or eBay-like sites are selling this EC beta card, they will all be marked as an Alpha. People will purchase them expecting alpha...because it is marked as "@". And they will pay Alpha prices. And the seller may honestly think they were selling Alpha, especially as time passes and sets get mixed all together. Print resolution will not be practical when viewing cards online...especially when the majority of purchasers don't even know about the print resolution differences. I do not like that Sorcery did this.
Yeah the beta one will be more expensive as @mikeqqc commented. I think the Curios in general is like that; people can make stuff up and call it a curio which already happened. So it is controversial for sure but personally I like it :)
If Erik and team ever decide to put some kind of riddle or mystery inside the cards that players have to solve (e.g. like Magic did with the Shadows over Innistrad release where some cards hinted at Emrakul being the bad guy in the next set) they REALLY have to step up their game if they don't want Haine to come up with the solution right away. 😄
Hello Haine, I wanted to reach out with a question that I have regarding a windblast curio that I recently found in one of my alpha boxes when deck building. I cant seem to find any sales data on it? Might you have any info on it?
That is a known "curio" (not curiosa). It does have a beta symbol on that one. I guess the Erik's Curiosa was kept as alpha to signal its something not supposed to be in beta.
thanks for the explanation. personally i am pretty disappointed in the look of beta. cards look much duller and the art just doesnt pop as much. also, one of the 4 beta boxes i opened had severe printing issues in like half the box.... many of the cards' text looks out of focus as if it was double printed. i dont know what the solution is... higher resolution printing looks better, maybe the colors need to be tweaked?
Yeah I agree, I think they shouldn't have used an unproven process that was not used in alpha. It does need to be tweaked to make it better but also to make the process more stable so the variation is smaller.
Not necessarily. High res printing itself is available at print shops. How well the counterfeit can be made is dependent on the data they use, not on what the original materials resolution.
@wizardsden666 Love the video. I have a suggestion for another similar topic if you are interested! :) Is it true that the card stock used for Alpha and Beta are different? I heard the card stocks are from Japan but some reported that Beta is thiner than Alpha? Are there other differences? Honestly I am afraid if they make it thicker since I am already having trouble putting some in the perfect fit sleeves, especially foil. Thanks as always!
Beta looks washed out. With less contrast. Less "vibrant". Now that you explain this is due to dot gain affecting higher res printings more than lower res printings...shouldn't Eric Curiosa have compensated this "dark" effect with more pigmentation (or some other printing variable like contrast or saturation) to compenaste the loss of vibrancy due to this dot gain differential effect?
I think they did compensate. The problem is that there are limitation on this compensation. This is due to the fact that dot gain is not uniform in respect to the intended dot size. Smaller dots (and technically bigger dots with close to 100% fill size dots) tend to have lesser effect on dot gain and 50% fill rate dots suffer the most. So what happens is that if you compensate your dot gain on the maximum dot gain dots, you will actually loose the small dots as those will tend to shrink more. There are non-linear compensations, but this is also tied to how well you control this process in actual mass production. It is said easily but it is challenging. Plus, compensating while not affecting the color balance for all 403 cards is not an easy task. This is why these high resolution printings are difficult. Compensation is limited, darker colors will appear darker, and lighter colors tend to fade. If consistency of color is a must while mass producing, it must be done by a really good printing company.

Thanks for such compliment! I feel really great lol
Great to hear that you got your boxes from TC! Hope you pull a Crurio from that!

Great to hear you are enjoying Sorcery as your first TCG! Make sure you show your deck at your LGS!
This was such an interesting topic! Excellent video Haine!

Thanks! It was something I really wanted to make clear to the community as it was raising so much false information.
Great video, Haine. Once again. Thanks!

I do not like that Sorcery did this.
I would think the beta version should be much more expensive than alpha since it is far more rare.
Yeah the beta one will be more expensive as @mikeqqc commented. I think the Curios in general is like that; people can make stuff up and call it a curio which already happened. So it is controversial for sure but personally I like it :)
Informative video! Please do more videos on card quality and printing techniques.👍
Great to hear that! There will be some along the way!
Good lord Haine, the Amescope 45X Simul-Focal Trinocular Zoom Stereo Microscope sounds like a doomsday weapon! Great video, thanks.
It sure is! It reveals any hidden secrets!
Excellent!
Glad you liked it!
Great job.
Thanks!
Always great when you bring in some science equipment! EC mystery solved.
Science solves everything!
Speaking of odd cards I pulled a foil blink misprint. It’s the art and effect of blink with the name and rarity text of blizzard
Yeah, that's a misprint that is found within all the blinks right now!
Just opened two boxes i bought from Corramor yesterday. He's a cool dude.
Yeah he's an honest guy! Hope you have good luck with those boxes!

Yeah, next time they need to make a curio at molecular level so it becomes more challenging for me lol
I have got one of Erik’s Curuosa from beta box today!
I soooooooooooo want that!!
@@wizardsden666 I was so excited when I find it!
@@wizardsden666 it’s already two of Erik’s Curuosa comes out in Taiwan
Hello Haine, I wanted to reach out with a question that I have regarding a windblast curio that I recently found in one of my alpha boxes when deck building. I cant seem to find any sales data on it? Might you have any info on it?
I have no idea, never seen one being sold!
Amazing as alwasy Haine! arigato gozaimasu!
Douitashimashite!
It’s only Erik’s curiosa alpha that being printed in the beta? No other alpha is affected?
Every alpha card is printed in beta except Erik's Curiosa
i found another "alpha reprint" curiousa... Guile Sirens foil with alt art... but this time with a beta symbol and still no full art on the back.
That is a known "curio" (not curiosa). It does have a beta symbol on that one. I guess the Erik's Curiosa was kept as alpha to signal its something not supposed to be in beta.
So it’s an alpha card that’s printed for the beta set, does this make it a curio ??
yes

Thanks for watching! Card stock episode is coming on its way once I get all the data collected!
Mystery solved.
Imagine pulling a curio and it’s a reprint of a card 😔
I like this curio the most!
