  • For a long time I have been trying to find a Sgian Dubh that can actually be used as an everyday bushcraft knife. Someone got me in contact with Flett Forge who kindly agreed to show me how to make one.

      @Rad Derry yes in can however common sense prevails, if you are searched in position of a knife and you can justify why you are carrying the knife. Ie i also had a sleeping bag and tent on my position or ike my freind how has been stopped twice in Glasgow who is a chief after work at 11pm, and had a selection of knives but also had kitchen whites (chiefs overalls) in the same bag and said phone my work if you have any doubts officer. Then all is OK

      @Rad Derry What are you talking about?
      When wore with highland dress Sgian Dubh's are completely legal.
      Under the Criminal Law (Consolidation) (Scotland) Act 1995 Sec. 49 it states "Section 49 makes it an offence to have a bladed or sharply pointed article in a public place without good reason or lawful authority. There is a defence where the person had the article with him for use at work, for religious reasons or as part of any national costume (e.g. a sgian dubh or kirpan)."
      It specifically lists Sgian Dubh's as legal because they are part of a national costume, stop spreading fake news.

    @FandabiDozi normally i prefer shorter videos when i'm researching a topic, so as to obtain multiple points of view from many different sources. Alas, i always find myself wishing your videos were longer! being Scottish myself and having been born/living in the states i love hearing stories, learning about our heritage and the accent reminds me of speaking to me da on the phone, anywho.. keep her up, cheers from the states! Montana State specifically :)

    Does anyone know the U.K. laws on carrying knives when in traditional dress? So Sgian Dubhs, Dirks and such?
    I thought you could carry any traditional weapons when in dress, but apparently it’s only up to 3.5” blades?
    (Which I don’t know if that’s the traditional size for a Sgain Dubh, as I thought could be various different sizes?)
    So if you want to carry a Dirk or sword I take it you would need a reason on top of that regardless of dress?

  • @charlesdada6434

    Most know the Sgian Dubh was carried on the calf, tucked into a stocking. Easy to see, easy to do, and easy to describe. But also was supposedly carried in the armpit. Can anyone tell me how armpit carry was accomplished?

    • @ReasonAboveEverything
      @ReasonAboveEverything 5 лет назад

      Charles Dada Given the traditional shape of the sheat use of cord is out of question like some bushcrafters carry their knives. My best quess is that they simply sew a small pocket inside the shirt sleeve. The knife was carried often so why not modify your clothing to accommodate the knife comfortably. Assassins used this carry method like jewish sicariots. I also know some gipsies who carry knives this way.

    Why is it called black knife?

    • @FandabiDozi
      @FandabiDozi  5 лет назад +1

      Either cos the handle was often made from bog oak (which was dark in colour) or it has its name from being used for "black" deeds as it was often a hidden knife. Thats how the stories go anyway :)

  • @druoleary
    @druoleary 5 лет назад
