WOW! Okay all 8 finished knives have SOLD OUT IN THE FIRST 20 MINUTES! I wasn't expecting that! You can still enter the fundraisers or there are openings for custom knives still!
Are these still legal?I seem to recall they had an exemption from the knife ban,but knowing the SSnp, they're probably banned now,I own a really old one found in burn embankment,it's probably stabbed someone, knowing this part of Scotland.
My brother makes these, but he sneaks in a rare earth magnet inside the sheath to add a little extra grab on the blade. It works really well, and is completely hidden once its been finished. Black wood and white antler is my favorite look, with only a shiny line of metal to separate them at the bolster. Great job, making a knife takes some time and care, otherwise everyone would do it. Scandi grind is my personal favorite as well. Cheers! Edit: Oops I dropped my comment inside your comment.
For anyone wondering about the music in the background at the start, the tune is called sunset on the somme and it's being played on a set of smallpipes. Hope that helps :)
UPDATE: All 8 finished Knives SOLD OUT in 20 minutes and all custom order SOLD OUT in 4 hours! The Fundraisers will run till the 21st Dec. It's really weird to me that I clicked on this because I wanted to know which style of Sgian Dubh to get but I have a small, good quality, blade that's similar in size and has the exact same blade profile as the one you prefer. My top edge is a bit straighter but I planned on honing it down anyway. Otherwise it is the same. I'm excited that I essentialy already have the item thats the subject of the video. I look forward to using it in bushcrafting scenarios here in the Appalachian Mountains of Eastern Kentucky. Lots of folks 'round here have Scottish, Irish, and English heritage. Man, I find the similarities between our cultures (Highlander and gaucho) We have our own heavy wool blanket, from native-american origin, (poncho), which could be used as shelter, as an over garment and as pants (chiripá) We have 2 carry knives, either the "xerenga" (simple, big, work knife carried in a crude leather sheethe) or the "Facón" (almost a dagger, but with only one cutting edge, once used to be made with broken swords, and in more recent times, post 1850, imported from Solingen, Germany of locally forged. Carried in a crude leather sheeth, or silver/alpaca sheeth.) The small knife is called verijero, because its carried above the "verija" (crotch), it was used for eating, cooking, leather work, castrating animals and such. We also used to carry a staff, but it was a spear, the tip was in the shape of a crescent, which the gauchos used to cut the tendons of cattle they were hunting I must say, the gaucho was a semi-nomadic horseman, his needs were a bit different from a highlander, but still our Cultures share many similarities
I've watched a couple of your videos now and they are informative and authentic. My one question is why hasn't BBC Scotland not picked these up they would be a great short program series. I also love the martial arts and survival skills elements of the videos, all well presented and explained without waffle. Great knives too.
Great idea but it's not available right now so can't you just get a standard good quality survival knife blade that's the right length and add a decorative and practical handle to it so it looks good in your sock? I'd buy it. It'd be easier to mass produce it that way anyway (standard blade, CNC machined blackwood thistle handle, die cast chrome stainless steel/ anodised aluminium pommel, die cut leather sheath, jig for assembly, etc).
Nice work my friend! I really like the blade design and sheath. I prefer a different handle shape myself but I agree with the rest of the points you mention. I use a credit card size diamond sharpener.

You sir are a modern hero of the highlands. If I had the millions that some have I’d be sure to donate to your cause. Hope to see the channel grow, keep up the good work. Nicolas from the toon

01? 🤔 Last time I've checked there was no such thing but I might be wrong. Although it might be O1 steel in AISI you're talking about or as specified by the German - 1.2510. Japanese also have it as SKS3 while Chinese would call it 9CrWMn. It's rather popular steel for beginner knife makers as it's really hard to mess it up and so knifes come out generally consistently good even in not so consistent heat treatment. 😸👍 In right hands tho it may surprise a lot and definitely surpass mass produced knifes by a lot. 🙀 Cheers and please if you include technical details be precise, some might find it disturbing. 😓 I just wonder how it would turn out of HW5 steel if used in such small design. 🤔
This design is perfect for my preferred field carry....armpit/handle down ps...try camillia seed oil....I use it on my bokken....Japanese have used it on all wood for many centuries
So basically you took a mora and put a symmetrical handle on it... the design of the sgian dubh was never a woods knife. It’s literally coz you are Scottish and using the appearance of the sgian dubh.. the design considerations... over 2 inches wide!? Why? Gimmicky
The historical context of carrying the sgian dubh has been largely forgotten...openly carrying it implies utility, _however_ carrying it tucked into a sock meant it was going to used for violence / murder (e.g. - concealed weapon). That historical tidbit may provide a clue for it' name, IMO.
Very nice design. Beautiful in my opinion & also seems functional. The trade knives of early New England were similar, in my view. Similar patterns are available today thru Dexter Russell in their Green River line. One is my EDC.
"The primordial tool of mankind" I find that kind of writing so over the top.... And yet handaxe production seems to be so tied to early human evolution, it's not at all wrong. Otters carry a favorite stone around to crack into urchins and shells. Somewhere along the way, some upright ape started carrying a broken piece of rock for the same sorts of reason, and we've been together ever since (us and knives that is.)
When did survival become European thing. Never cross a European when served Army any worried about USSR fell it go lucky period Europe yeah served early 90s
The best 'wet and cold' bushcraft channel. When I go to Scotland I use my Scots name Graham Ross, come down from an ancestor who had to leave (driven out?) Western Ross. What's your best no-see-um repelent ?
I have to ask. What are the notches on the back of the blade for? Is that just for control. I notice some are like notches and some are less pronounced. The design difference between Scottish knives and American knives are interesting. Most of the Scot knives appear to be double tapered like a dagger where the American knives were more like the bowie design even in smaller knives. One traditional double edge fighter was the Arkansas Toothpick. I carry a small fixed blade Buck as an armpit knife. You've got some beautiful knives and priced fairly for the amount of work involved.
Very nice knife well made. They are not like the off-the-shelf knives! I have another question. But that shouldn't be an insult! In the highlands it is always very windy and cool. What does a real Scot have under his kilt? Do you have underpants or shorts underneath? Or as some claim, you have nothing under it? In the past, women in the countryside did not wear underpants either. You can do this in summer, but surely not when it's cold? 😅
To my knowledge there have been no sgian-dubhs discovered archaeologicaly. They most probably didn't exists in the 18th century as a an actual type of knife. They were a Victorian invention. There was a knife that was often worn under the armpit, which makes a little more sense in my opinion.
If you started mass producing these you could sell millions and easily fund everything you're trying to do with your land and this channel just by selling these knives. The wooden sheath and leather looks beautiful, that click is perfect and I love the versatility in ways to wear it. you should definitely be selling these for at least $100
Do normal scian dubh have a spine like this one? The few I’ve seen are “true” double edged daggers/knives. That would severely hinder its usability for most fine cutting where some thumb action is really helpful :)

So basically you took a mora and put a symmetrical handle on it... the design of the sgian dubh was never a woods knife. It’s literally coz you are Scottish and using the appearance of the sgian dubh.. the design considerations... over 2 inches wide!? Why? Gimmicky
Oh no its English made... Its cursed. I suppose.
Edit - jk obviously
The historical context of carrying the sgian dubh has been largely forgotten...openly carrying it implies utility, _however_ carrying it tucked into a sock meant it was going to used for violence / murder (e.g. - concealed weapon).
That historical tidbit may provide a clue for it' name, IMO.
I hate I missed these.
Very nice design. Beautiful in my opinion & also seems functional. The trade knives of early New England were similar, in my view. Similar patterns are available today thru Dexter Russell in their Green River line. One is my EDC.
I like the Fandabi-Dubh. Its rugged and functional. Get your production stream ready.
"The primordial tool of mankind"
I find that kind of writing so over the top....
People today get mad at a hairstyle as cultural appropriation, forgetting that the Victorian Era existed
Is anybody carry a GOOD one here in this country?? USA. That you could suggest?? Thanks
Hello, where can I buy that Sgian Dubh survival knife?
Thank you
If you started mass producing these you could sell millions and easily fund everything you're trying to do with your land and this channel just by selling these knives. The wooden sheath and leather looks beautiful, that click is perfect and I love the versatility in ways to wear it. you should definitely be selling these for at least $100
Where can I get buy that hat from? Cant find anything even close. I am in Australia though..
Love ya vids.
Being Scottish I know that our ancestors would bathe 2-3 times a year only, sex with the wife must have been a really gross experience hahaha
Do normal scian dubh have a spine like this one? The few I’ve seen are “true” double edged daggers/knives. That would severely hinder its usability for most fine cutting where some thumb action is really helpful :)
Спасибо за информацию. Было очень интересно. Хочу попробовать сделать нечто похожее.
Gutted u don’t make them anymore would love one just got my first dirk would look perfect beside each other
