That's a good looking knife! I've worked with wood for 30 years and never thought of using that wood stabilizer for a finish, thank you very much for sharing, I've subbed.
I have to say. I watch a lot of videos like this. you sir are an amazing Smith and my favorite to watch. I'm planning on starting my own projects soon. great inspiration!
If your ever on the eastern side of Connecticut let me know, would love to learn a thing or two , great skill you have ! I built a forge and a 2x72 belt grinder , need to learn more on using them though haha, take care, in all honesty great work ! 👍
Awesome work! Ur grinder ain't a piece of shit. It did it's job. It's what I started on. The skill lies in the maker, not the tools. Look forward to watching more of your vids. =]
Nice job, it's pronounced "ski-an do" if anyone's wondering, and that one would get you arrested here lol. Mostly a small ceremonial one is worn near the sock if wearing the kilt. Usually at weddings nowadays.
Fucking politicians and royalty making it illegal for their "servants" to have a knife. Not one of them would get in trouble for having one, it makes me sick.
No problem! Glad I could help! Murrays a really good teacher and really knows what he's talking about! and after reading his books I felt like my blades would of taken at least a year or two before they look like they do now!
Andrew Hanowski what was this of 0-1 stock did you use? I am going to get a bunch of 1080 from admiral steel in the near future so i can start laying in a hamon.
O1 is a pretty standard steel that's easy to heat treat. The customer may have wanted it also. I don't reccomend it for fancy hamons and don't know too much about 1080 but it will probally be better for hamons then o1. Lots of info on the internet from people who work with these steels! Personally I water quench 52100 or 1095 for hamons, but that isn't really a beginner thing to be doing!
Sgian dubh in Scots Gaelic translates to “black knife”.The Gaelic here in Ireland spells it like Scian dubh.Claymore is cliamh mór/ciamh maith.Which means big sword or good sword.
Was just commissioned to make one. Did random pattern damascus. 72layers. I first need to add a couple walls to my shop tomorrow and get hammering this gnarly billet into shape. Any advise?
Could you plz tell me the measurements of the knife ( if you know it than I would like the measurements in cm 😁 I’m from Europe and I don’t really understand inches🤗)
Hey! I get that stuff from Canadian knife makers supply. Just google them, I believe the website is knifemaker.ca it was ALOT bigger then I expected it to be! Ha ha!
That looks just great! I hate to criticize this blade so I will just comment that IMHO it could use a finger guard - but that's not part of the original design is it? NEVER MIND!!!!!! Quite nearly perfect
Read 101 knife designes by Murray Carter. Its on the app store pretty cheap! Both of Murray's books are worth getting! They helped me out alot for building and designing.
You got to temper them. They will chip if you don't. I tempered it to a golden wheat color. Use a blow torch and heat the handle area to a blue and let the heat slowly change the color of the steel until the edge is wheat. If you go a little blue it's fine for a chisel.
Hey I really enjoy your videos but It would be really useful if you explained why you do things you do instead of text in the video . sometimes I have to go back and read it twice. but awesome work !
That's a good looking knife! I've worked with wood for 30 years and never thought of using that wood stabilizer for a finish, thank you very much for sharing, I've subbed.
Looks really good.
I like that you kept the scales on the blade.
And the colour of the wood really fits the build.
Great job! 👍
A thing of beauty 👍🏴
Very nice build, that's quite a talented eye you have. Thanks for taking the time to film your work for us.
I have to say. I watch a lot of videos like this. you sir are an amazing Smith and my favorite to watch. I'm planning on starting my own projects soon. great inspiration!

That is beautiful… my favorite sgain dubh I've ever seen
Knife turned out hella dope, Andrew Hanowski!
Nice! Fabulous finish on that blade!
Beautiful work! Sgian dubhs are near the top of my favorite styles of knives. A nearly perfect utility knife design, in my opinion :)
Thanks!
Very fine work Sir thank you for sharing 👍🏻
Nice. I know this is an old video, but it is very good. Love how it turned out.
very nice job all looks nice and clean
Excellent work again.
A very beautiful Knife! Amazing
As a Scot who wears a kilt almost every day I'd be proud to wear that.
Beautifully done.

Beautiful knife!
It looks very nice sir I'm hoping I can reach your skill level one day.
You’ll get there
Like a mirror great work.

Ha ha, thanks!
this is probably my favorite design.
Phenomenal.
Buen trabajo, muy bien rematado.
Very nice
gran bel lavoro . Complimenti
Awesome man!
Beautiful.
such a great knife! being Scottish I would like to make 1 for a neck knife! really exceptional!
Beautiful
Thanks for your art
your welcome man! Thanks for watching!
Any advice on how to grind in the bevel on this knife?
The Fairbairn used in the Golfwar must be inspired by this Scottish knife. The shape of the blade is very simular to it.
pretty badass bud
Nice job, it's pronounced "ski-an do" if anyone's wondering, and that one would get you arrested here lol. Mostly a small ceremonial one is worn near the sock if wearing the kilt. Usually at weddings nowadays.
wrong its dove not do ....

Cool, everyone's learning, just going by what we call it round here.
Mc Atheist different accents play a big part in it and stuff getting lost in translation
skeane is a popular name for this type of knife in ireland
Fucking politicians and royalty making it illegal for their "servants" to have a knife. Not one of them would get in trouble for having one, it makes me sick.
hey man, I wanted to thank you for suggesting that Murray Carter book. Already improving on my drawing. thanks again!
No problem! Glad I could help! Murrays a really good teacher and really knows what he's talking about! and after reading his books I felt like my blades would of taken at least a year or two before they look like they do now!

sorry typo on the last one. just wanted to know the width that you started out at. 1 1/2"?
Yup. 1 1/2" x 1/4"
I can see there was some blood on this one. All the good ones have blood in them. Well done!
Ha ha. Probally. I cut myself alot in the shop. Grinders the worst though. Anyway, Thanks for watching!

ottima tecnica .
Lovely ski-n-doo, I'd be happy to pop that in my sock. Thumbs up.
That's beautiful. Start to finish how long did this take you?
good job
Good video man and Hey where do you get your sanding belts ?
Very nice craftsmanship. Imo, thong tube distracts from overall aesthetics of knife, but otherwise loving this project.
Nice, but i have always been interested in you engraving, do you use regular chisels, have u made them your self or is it engraving chisels?
how do you make it rust free or wil it just rust after it becames wet ?
Very nice, trying to guess how long it is, seems almost to long to stick in a sock?
Could you plz tell me the measurements of the knife ( if you know it than I would like the measurements in cm 😁 I’m from Europe and I don’t really understand inches🤗)
What wood was typically used for traditional Sgian Dubhs?
I am a fellow Canadian knife maker (Wiarton). I was just wondering where you get the green buffing compound that size?
Hey! I get that stuff from Canadian knife makers supply. Just google them, I believe the website is knifemaker.ca it was ALOT bigger then I expected it to be! Ha ha!
Andrew Hanowski . thanks. that's what i thought. just got my grinder from them.
vere nice
Thank you!
Looks good but you should have tempered it darker. Make it less brittle
what did you use for your thing tube and pins? I have just been commissioned to build a few of these knives
I got the tube and pins at Canadian Tire. Alot of hardware store should sell them, but some don't.
Thanks, I will have a look. I have brass pins but I liked the look of what I assume is stainless
Yeah the steel look is nice! Anyway, Good luck on the blades man!
Thanks and you too!
Здравствуйте, зачем наковальню водой поливаете во время ковки?
That looks just great! I hate to criticize this blade so I will just comment that IMHO it could use a finger guard - but that's not part of the original design is it? NEVER MIND!!!!!! Quite nearly perfect
did you free hand that stencil? I SUCK so bad a drawing that most times I don't even bother sketching it out before I forge. Any tips?

On the graver at what color idid you temper if any?

Hey I really enjoy your videos but It would be really useful if you explained why you do things you do instead of text in the video . sometimes I have to go back and read it twice. but awesome work !
How do I order one?
Where do you get the poplar from?
Don't use it. I got it from my local lumberyard. I don't use it anymore because it's too soft.
Anyone 2020?
Hello Andrew. Do you take knife commissions?
Can i get the template?
That’s sexy.
Well I stand corrected in this Vid, Your hammering technique is perfect. If it's not Scottish its Crap! LoL
what is a sgian dubh sell for?
Take my money
scian* dubh is Irish for black knife not sure if it's scottish
You made a mistake by putting a secondary bevel on it :)

Not a fan of glue in making knives.
The hashtag goes in front of the grit number, and behind when it refers to pounds.
