Don’t worry, you bought a real “GREAT!” Dirt bike. The YZ has historically till today “rated the best overall dirt bike period!” I love them so much I own 3. I build dirt bikes I’ve done it for 12 years. I own a 2000 YZ250, an 02 YZ250, and an 05 YZ250. You really don’t need any $12,000 euro bike, parts are very expensive and not even close to available as your YZ. Most parts from 99 till now will mount up to your bike! Huge parts availability, no other bike has it so good! I’ll always be a YZ guy, just don’t need a euro bike.

Preach brother. I owned a 94 300exc. I had to order a impeller cover (this was like 06) they had to cast the mf in Austria and it took 4 months and 500 to get, for a freaking magnesium cover. No thanks. Gimme yz.

Whats up bro! I have also owned a handful of YZ250 2strokes. I have never got to try the YZ250x though. My current YZ is bored to 270 and I really enjoy how much better it is in the low to mid rmp range than the standard YZ250. The 270 makes it feel more like my 2019 Husqvarna TX300, which is an amazing bike but also cost more and more expensive for parts and everything mist of the time. That being sad, I am looking for some feedback on the difference between YZ250 vs YZ250x. Thanks alot. Sick bike! Braaaaaaap!

You did not get your information from a knowledgeable source. From a guy who makes his living porting/stroking 2 stroke engines, the engine changes you claim are not correct. Raising the exhaust port (for the prime example, and 5mm is huge), is a mod for more top end power, not low rpm power, (I will lose low rpm power.). I have the 2019 YZ250 that I have lowered (.75" off the suspension and 1" off the seat" to bring the bike back down to a rational height, (and much easier cornering. Lower your bars for much better cornering too. We had it right in the 80's90's before freestyle got big.). The engine mods I will do will shift the top rpm power to lower rpm power for a much better trail riding experience. That 250x pipe is tuned for more low end than the MX model. I can tell by looking at it's longer tuned length and cone diameter to the stinger pipe.
    1) Add the FMF Gnarly pipe. The pro circuit platinum 2 pipe is a higher revving pipe than the FMF Gnarly. The FMF also has a bit more frame clearance at the header section, in case you bend the header loop in the frame direction.
    2) Lower the cylinder by removing the cylinder base gasket (.5mm), and seal the cylinder to the cases with a good gasket sealer that resists gasoline, for a lower exhaust port and more compression. Should still be able to use 93 pump gas with the stock low compression head. Removing the gasket instead of taking .020" off the base of the cylinder is reversible if needed.
    3) I am adding the V-force reeds, and i may remove the stock reed block spacer.
    4) Add epoxy (origional JB weld epoxy is good) to fill in the rear transfer hooks, for better scavenging at the rear of the cylinder at lower rpm's
    5) Clean up any casting goobers in the stock ports and tunnels.
    6) jet the carb well after the mods, (stock jetting is very rich also, and you will find a other 2hp with the jetting alone if done well.).
    7) modify the power valve (for lowering the cylinder) if needed.
After you get more low end power, you will probably gear it back up a bit.
I also designed and made my own full wrap hand guards that have many pluses compared to the full wraps on the market today, (made from a set of Cycra's), that I can't find anybody to sell the design to. So I guess I will be the only person in the world with them.

KYB suspension is the deciding factor for me. My next bike will be a Rieju 300 as it is street legal here in Spain, KYB suspension, kickstart and a carburetor. If the Yamaha 250x was available here I would buy one of those.

Let the people who don't know who to set up their bike buy a EPA expensive bike. I would do that too if I knew nothing about setting up a stock bike. The FIM stopped factory bike development in the USA because we were smoking them at the last 5 MXofN races at the time), and the 4-stroke forced on the industry by a dictatorship called the EPA, made all bikes about 2-3 times more expensive than they would be with out that intervention. That maybe OK for the little rocks and roots that you want your suspension to react well over and keep the tire on the ground, but I am sure you bottom easily over little jumps. But especially after you set the rear sag to 100 or 105mm, the front end will ride low, and give the bike a squirrely/unstable feeling. I weigh 215 and had to go up 2 rates front and rear, (typical off road is faster whooped out single track in Michigan.), and I am sure you will like the front end better with a spring weight one step up from stock. My stock YZ was the worst handling/feeling bike I ever had by far. Luckily I know/figured out how to fix it. Those SSS forks are the best I have ever ridden with also.

I don't really care about the gearbox and lack of estart, but rip ktm if Yamaha ever adds those features. (KTM is badass, mostly joking)

Never going to be a KTM killer until they’re built from the factory with electric start AND fuel injection.

      @@Singletrack541 MSRP for a 2023 YZ250X - $7,999
      2023 KTM 300 XC-W - $11,100
Enough of a price difference for me. And considering a 2016 - 2021 YZ250X is the same bikes minus plastics, I'd take my chances on a used on and pay $4500 - $5500. KTM's hold their value too well.
It's really like comparing apples to oranges and is more of a figure of speech.

Most guys will do it at 50 hours for racing and 100 hours for enduro. The whole engine at 200 hours seems to be about adequate for big bores

Thanks...I'm thinking of buying one. Years ago I had a it465. I rode it on and off road .I had the highest gearing possible. Going by memory 15 or 16 on the front and as small as it would go on the back wheel. It would cruise along at 120 kph all day long and easily go 160 kph but the front mud gard would bend over. I'm wondering if yz would handle higher gearing!!!!!!!
