Was always a Harry's Garage fan as a car nut but now I find myself more excited to see a Farm video! Has really opened up a fascinating new world for me.
Last video a throw-away line about a counterbalance on a tractor had me looking up the density of metals to figure out what kind of metal it was given the size. That doesn't happen with car videos.
@@aretonsenner6664 Very much looking forward to watching his new series. Apparently when they first began filming Clarkson thought it should be funny like The Grand Tour but then started to actually taking farming seriously so it took another year to get a serious farming series filmed. In one of Harry's earlier videos here on the farming channel you can see Clarkson filming the series at an equipment auction.
The "whispering" Bob Harris of the Cotswolds, so nice to have a farming video with lots of back ground knowledge and without loud music and whoop and hollering like so many others have on their channels. Pleasure to watch.
I’m really enjoying this series of videos. After watching Clarkson’s Farm which is a remarkably good watch, Harry brings us down to earth (pun intended) with informed but not overly dense commentary on how his farm operates. Fascinating to learn how technical modern farming has become yet it still relies so much in the vagaries of the weather. More videos please.
I found Harry for the cars, love that stuff - especially the older ones - unquestionably the best car content online or on TV by far. Yet now I've found his farm I almost enjoy these even more - fascinating to learn about how farms operate these days and still a big dollop of machinery porn. Makes me want to rush out and buy a grey fergie! Hugely entertaining, wonderfully educational - Harry, you're a legend sir!
Hi Harry good to hear 2020 hasn’t been a total disaster, thanks to your wheat being higher quality than perhaps you expected. I find these ‘behind the scenes’ look at farming fascinating. Keep them coming.
Hi Harry I used to be in farming but now I’m riddled with arthritis and work for a leading supermarket, I love your videos there very informative on how you run your farm you go into every detail as what videos should be keep up the good work and I always look forward to your next video
Recently, was walking through Trafalgar Square in the early a.m. after taking the air in St. James's Park, and, was amazed to see no pigeons whatsoever! Spotted a solitary chap with a Harris Hawk (he told me) on his arm, who explained why there were no pigeons to be seen: they got one look at the Hawk and they scarpered! Raptor control in action - it was truly amazing! Now, you mentioned problems ahead with greedy pigeons...
Love this type of more technical business video - and love your shear enjoyment of it all, Harry! Hope that your luck holds on the OSR gamble - Good Luck!
It is fascinating to hear about the reasons for the inputs used. E.g. Roundup gets a bad press for beliefs such as it accumulates in the environment. Farmers that use these chemicals have their reasons but Joe Public wouldn't know without Harry and others being generous with their time for us.
Being a lifetime petrol head I'm a fan of Harry's Garage and just took a casual glance at one of his farming videos. They're a real eye opener for me. You go to the shop, you buy your bread, your veg oil etc, you moan about them going up 5p or 10p this week with never a thought as to how they got there. I used to think arable farming was easy. You plant your crops, you watch them grow and you harvest them. IF ONLY it was that simple!
Pretty good news this time. Thank goodnes. This channel really has become a must watch for me, having lived in rural communities for most of my adult life, I am really beginning to understand more of the workings that I just took for granted before. Many thanks.
Brilliant that things came out so well after all. It’s an absolute pleasure watching how you “manage” your farm / crops etc. Very interesting to this armchair - would be farmer!!
thanks Harry, I am having difficulty with the beautiful weather I am seeing on your vids. NOthing like what we experienced a few years ago. Great video.
What a great result from the straw rake. Should lower the seedbank in that field significantly. Would be interesting to try drilling into that green cover then spray it off after seeding. 👍👍👍
@@georgedoorley5628 it certainly could but a lot of the modern direct drills are designed to drill direct into cover crops and therefore should deal with that. Even the Claydon should be ok I think. I’m told it does tend to block a little when there’s a lot of surface trash / chopped straw.
Hi, A very interesting video , for ever the optimist in a farmers life and the reasoning along the way ,as the seasons change .The thought you put in is a credit to you ,one can only admire your efforts .
Harry's got this farming 'lark' sussed: remain positive, keep planning ahead and it's onwards and upwards. And when a setback comes along, which it inevitably will: learn whatever lessons there are to be had from it, then put it behind you and get on with it. Hello from New Zealand.
Harry, Thanks for an interesting and fascinating video. I really enjoy watching how modern farming technology keeps pace with all of the challenges which farmers have to face nowadays. Let’s hope 2021 won’t be as bad as this year 🤞
Harry, top job with that field of Rapeseed, with the great quality cereal grain, topping out the bank balance, I know you love the cars ,but your a top farmer and always modest, cheers. D
Hello Harry, it's Mike from good old Yorkshire!!!! It's another great video update on the farm,I can now see the logic, about not ploughing, but I think we still like to plough in Yorkshire,I will have to try & have a few words to our farmers, about Min/ till.....keep up the good work Harry 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻....
Fascinating, I am surrounded by farmland but didn't know the ins and outs of the details. the farm behind my sons house in West Lancashire still has the wheat in the field and it "looks " good to me but I'm no farmer.
Fascinating stuff - I really need to learn more about farming. I was through that way last week on the A40 - just a beautiful area....! Anyway, help a townie time - why are there so many raptors flying these days? When i was a kid, you just never saw any. Have farming practices changed to encourage them...?
About people freaking out about glyphosate, I can only say that, as a layman, I tend do mistrust substances that scientific reports link to lymphomas: "a compelling link between exposures to GBHs and increased risk for NHL", see www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6706269/ On the other hand Harry made me realise that using it reduces farming CO2 footprint. That's the beauty of farming: one of the oldest and most needed activities, at the forefront of science! Great admiration to Harry, that openly discusses it under all aspects.
Am I the only sad bastard that would enjoy watching the machinery getting rigged up etc? I was disappointed the cut away to you setting the spinner disappeared so quickly. 😂 Great content as ever. Really happy 2020 harvest wasn't a complete financial disaster in the end!
Back in about 1979 my farm manager at the time told me that the atmosphere feeds plants.(But I did not know at the time which chemical it was which he was referring to) During my following year at the Caythorpe Lincolnshire agricultural College I created an essay which recommended that straw burning was counterproductive and needed to be put to a stop. Just a few years later, straw burning was banned, and the health of British farming soils was improved as a consequence
I think we need an outro like Harry's Garage but with some different tractor sounds as they disappear into the field at just over walking pace, hahahahaha
Hi Thankyou for you videos. In this video I was interested to see the Tyne harrows you used behind the spreader, what brand is that machine? Is it a successful method for sowing grass seed? Thanks again for your videos, they are great
Great video, thank you! Really interesting to see the focus switch to 2021 so quickly after harvest. And for the moment at least it looks really promising! Can't wait for the next installment. I was wondering if you'd keep much, if any, of your grain for a future wheat crop. Random thought - for either channel - a few weeks back you obtained a GTV6 for a review from a friend of yours. It transpires he also has a Lamborghini Tractor on his farm. What might the chances be on you doing a "review" on this? Even a slightly tongue-in-cheek one. "But what this tractor is really about is the tilling. You'll join me next in some better fields..."
Be aware Harry that the damage can appear in the spring when the larvae eat their way through the plant to leave. By then your 80% money back guarantee will had expired. I wish u good luck with it I am not missing growing it.
I'd love to hear about what a bad vs a good year looks like finance wise. My impression of farming is that you get quite a lot of mediocre to poor years with a few good years, all of which is floated by a lot of loans against future harvests.... How you manage to make a living, never mind a 'good' living out of this is a mystery....
Disclaimer I work for this company, and I don't know who Harry uses, but this might give you some idea. www.agrii.co.uk/products-services/farm-saved-seed/
Hi Harry, how do you remove 'volunteer wheat'? I presume you use a machine to do it rather than you and your lad out with a fork and old dust bin? Enjoying the farm videos as much as the garage ones.
We(us farmers) use a selective herbicide to control volunteer wheat, ie a herbicide that kills one type of plant and not another, where as roundup that harry talks about kills everything.

Support that comment.
I came for the Dakar bikes, stayed for the farming.
Oh man so true!!

Exactly why i first came here, and i've been here ever since!

Top notch explanations again once again Harry! Thank you for taking the time and effort to produce them :)
Pandemic? There is a pause in pandemic when Harry drops a video! 😁
It's so good hearing about something else...and learning about something else.
Is everyone else sitting at home quietly hoping all Harry’s fields turn into jungle sized high yielding monster crops of plenty?
Following you now for a year, my sympathy and admiration are increasing. Thanks for the education.
Came for the cars. Stayed for the farming. Really enjoying these videos! Great job.
Really appreciate the farm chatter Harry. It's very relaxing.

I think Harry Metcalfe taking a shit would be an equally enthralling channel of interest. Never met him, I think he is an outstanding human being.
Always looking forward to your latest release. Who needs to go to Las Vegas to be a high stakes roller? Be a farmer instead!

in New Zealand we sow slug bait down with the seed, usually monitor numbers first

Harry, your passion comes through on everything you do. A question, is min till a southern England thing as most farms round Wigan do the old method?
