One thing you really appreciate about Maul in these novelizations is his mixture of strength and humility. He KNOWS he's far better than the majority of Jedi in the order, but as soon as he meets a Jedi capable of holding his own, he shifts tactics and takes his opponent seriously. He doesn't get demoralized that he isn't winning, but instead channels his feelings into more power.
I would have loved to have seen Darth Maul in Episodes 7-9. George Lucas wrote eight different scripts post ROTJ. One of them consisted of Maul rebuilding the Sith. And Luke likewise rebuilding The New Jedi Order. And in doing so, both clash. Darth Talon would have been introduced also. Aswell as Ben Skywalker and the Solo twins. But unfortunately, we got the abysmal Disney trilogy. Plus, after the trilogy, it was muted that Luke (and Obi-Wan) would redeem Maul. But unfortunately we will never see this.

Why did Qui-Gon rush headlong into the reactor room to fight Maul solo anyway? I'm sure he would have been aware of himself tiring, and that he would also have been at a disadvantage using Ataru in that tight space. And since the novel said he felt no hatred for Maul, then he also wasn't controlled by bloodlust at that point.
There's three mistakes Kenobi makes earlier in the duel that would have killed him, and Qui gon has to cover for him. So I think he thought he could fight fully if he was separated from Kenobi, along with feeling his fear and wanting to protect him.
Because for plot reasons. Thats the point of "Duel of the Fates". If Qui Gon didn't die then Anakin would not have fallen. When you start a series like Star Wars in the middle like Lucas did with New Hope, it meant that everything that happened before was set in stone. You cannot have the events of the OG movies without Obi Wan being Anakin's mentor. Obi Wan even says that the circumstances of Anakin coming to him were complicated in Episode 6 iirc (when Luke went back to Yoda and questioned him and Ben about Anakin).

this view of the jedi as the saviors that never showed up would have made Maul a superior antagonist than Dooku, in every way Anakin is the luck brat that got spoon fed everything Maul wanted. Anakin was even the apprentice that Sedious truly wanted, where Maul was just an assasin and a tool. Maul could have used this connection to much more effectively bring out Anakin's hatred, being more relateable so their connection through the force would be stronger through a sense of kinship for the darkness in both of their hearts. Maul would have also been e better rallying symbol for the outer rim and separatist worlds because of this. a Jedi seasing to be the senate's lap dog is one thing but someone who's lived through suffereng they lived through, were going through, or that they feared could come an any moment is much more compelling. him showing Anakin the path he could have been forced to walk but also the power that suffering provided would also fit natively with these 2. this would have also made Obiwan's views of Maul more complicated, as he would eventually sense this kinship and that the boy his master wanted him to train was slipping away at times through something he laments that he will never truly understand.

As a result, he was the first of only three jedi in that entire jedi order to be trained to manifest consciousness after death. He was even the one to train Yoda and later Obi-wan. He did prove himself to be the best jedi's jedi, not to prove a point, but to simply be who, what, and where the force needed him to be to ensure the galaxy is better for it. 4:40 "The cowardly boy runs off" LMAOOOO Darth Maul is savage. Nobody likes Jake Lloyd but calling him a coward for running away (unarmed of course) from a lightsaber duel between a Jedi and a Sith is hilarious
Ironically enough, the killing hit from Obi-Wan was highly against the rules of the Jedi Counsel. Cutting somebody in half would cauterize the body as it's cut in half; leading to a slow and painful death. Apparently the blade of lightsabers are supposed the be hotter than the sun. So a single stab was deadly because it cooked your insides.
5000⁰ isn't THAT hot. It would sear any wound to prevent bleeding. BLEEDING is what stops your organs and kills you. No blood means no Oxygen.. No Oxygen means your cells and organs die
Qui-Gon saw something through the Force. He got tired but he was power house. He was perfect duelist. But this is perfect teaching. When you have opportunity use it. Obi-Wan was much weaker than Maul. He was unexperienced, younger.Maul's arrogance defeated him. Obi-Wan needed to be calm to defeat Maul. And he did this. Perfectly. Obi-Wan did this on Mustafar. Perfect state of mind. This was huge compliment of Maul. I understand Maul changing point of view. May the Force be with you too
I think this light saber battle was the single most pivotal event in the entire Skywalker era of Star Wars. The outcome of this fight had enormous implications for Anakin's fate. Any possible outcome would have completely changed the course of history from in this part of the Star Wars lore.
This was eye opening and so descriptive like listening to a book and so well written and incredible that maul was so philosophical even though a cold hearted killer! 😮
Maul was unstable while still an infant on Dathomir. It didn't help when Mother Talzin dropped him off to a Sith Lord. When Maul dueled Qui-Gon he knew he wasn't a full Sith. He was hoping to one day earn enough respect to be given the opportunity to be the main apprentice to Palpatine, once he killed off his master. Maul suspected there were other apprentices, so it wouldn't be an automatic promotion. Defeating a Jedi Master would go a long way towards Sidious making him a true Sith.
If Qui-gon Jinn and Darth Maul's physical strength are equal that means the strikes will cancel out, yet Quigon is basically using a sword against a versitile staff. Qui-gon's strikes are very well coordinated and graceful yet his muscle strength is similar. In realswordsmanship a longsword can block a greatsword for even a guy who is 173 cm can block a muscular dude using a greatsword; it's the good and balanced structure that makes a solid bracing. So Qui-gon Jinn swung the blade almost hitting maul, yet maul was injured beforehand?
Interesting. It also backs up my personal fan theory. I feel like my theory is absolute and makes perfect sense. I dunno if I've told you it. I theorized that after Jinn found anakin and believed for sure that he was the chosen one; and then the council ruled against his beliefs and denied the approval for anakin to be trained, this made Jinn go full wisdom mode. He would have felt that he's right and thought of a way to have anakin trained, not just on the side. With as wise as he was, he would have snuffed out that the sith he saw, Maul, wanted him dead so that he couldn't uncover Sidious and also train anakin. About this same time lines up perfectly with when in Canon, Jinn had learned about and started training on how to become a force ghost after death. Then he got the grand idea, "if I allow this sith to kill me like they planned, I can make obi wan promise me to train anakin. The council will not want to lose obi wan, so they will honor this promise and allow obi wan to train anakin, and he will bring balance to the force.". Now take all that and think about it. Qui Gon could definitely have beaten Maul. He controlled that whole fight, he had Maul going "oh shit" back stepping and dodging, getting him into a corner where he knew obi wan would do better in because he knows obi wan's style. Then he slowed down, and attacked a very specific way for Maul to take the opportunity to stick him that way so it wasn't an immediate death and then had obi wan make that promise. What do you think? Good cool theory or nope, that's it, we're accepting it as fact 😆
I am sure I also read that the entire area had been flooded with dark side energy prior to the duel. Without that Qui-Gon would have defeated Maul and fate would have been different.
It would be cool if they had flashbacks in Attack of the Clones of Obi Wan Kenobi training Aniakin Skywalker at each age, I might be wrong but I think Aniakin was 9 or 10 during the Phantom Menace so seeing Aniakin growing up to where we see him and Obi Wan in the beginning of Attack of the Clones would be super cool, I say all of this cuz No.1 again it would be really cool and No.2 I feel like this should be important to Star Wars Lore or something similar cuz all we get to see in Attack of the Clones is Aniakin at the late/ending stage of being a Padawan..
You'd think that maybe.. and just maybe after Exar Kun someone would idk learn how to fight against the double sabre/sabre staff but hey let's just wing it 😂
That moment in Episode 1 where Qui-Gon disengages from combat and meditates while Obi-Wan is shown to be sweating, and uneasy was perfect. As soon as the beams turned back off, his eyes immediately opened, and he was back on the attack again. It showed the miles and miles of difference in a Jedi Padawan (not even a Jedi Knight yet), and a long time Jedi Master. To be able to remain centered while facing a Sith Lord in the first confrontation in 1000 years shows what it really means to be a fully complete Jedi Master. Qui-Gon wasn't even afraid of the possibility of dying. The Force was truly his ally. He fought with no hatred, or malice. It was all business for the protection of a galaxy which was known to be better off without the Sith.
Random thought, I always wondered why after that moment he didn't reunite with Obi-Wan. He could've either stayed put or moved backwards rather than move forward and remain separated.
The opposite of hate is not love but apathy.mall is a obstacle to gen nothing more nothing less.this is how real men fight not for pride or spectacles or anything else but for victory and to uphold what is right.do not hate your enemies see them as a danger but nothing more and show them how little they really matter. 11:26
Oui-Gon was old by the time he had his duel with Maul, if he would have been younger he could have defeated Maul. He had used what he had left at his age by the time they reached the room he was defeated in.
Im not sure i can agree. If indeed Maul did regret how he killed Qui-gon, he wouldn't have used the exact same move against Obi-wan in their final duel. In the end, it was Maul's rage and arrogance that ended him. If he had any regret about how he killed Qui-gon, it was brief. I did thoroughly enjoy the video though.
I sometimes think about an alternate reality where Darth Maul defeats sidious after taking the boy on the desert planet. Training anakin in the dark side until anakin becomes a Sith. Think about how strong Darth Vader would've become.....
Darth Maul was a far younger and more athletic duelist. Zabraks also have greater strength, resistance to pain and a redundant heart & circulatory system. Qui-Gon’s greater skill and Maul’s overconfidence were the determining factors that led to the stalemate on Tattooine.
At 9:30 choir Qui-gon wasn’t really a Jedi he was a gray Jedi he was about to leave the order just like master Sipho Diaz and he got killed by Palpatine before he could unveil the Sith plans to the Jedi council but both were more gray Jedi
Question to Star Wars fans. We know Form 4 does not age well and has many weaknesses if it cannot overwhelm their opponents quickly, but if Qui-Gon was in his prime, would he defeat Maul? Would he be as centered in his 30s like he was in his 50s?
If they hadn’t killed off qui gon so soon, chances are they would have managed to mess up his character and find a way to make us not like him as much. Perhaps*
It's a damn shame that none of this rich background is explained in the prequels. On the screen it looks like Maul pretty much had his way with Qui-Gon without any real challenge.
In Legends in terms of weapon mastery Maul was a low eight level duelist tied with Plo Koon with Qui Gon being a high seven duelist and Dooku/Mace being Mid eight duelists and Yoda being a high eight level duelist around TPM Era so only Jedi that could of beat Maul on even ground with a lightsaber and no cheap shots where Yoda, Dooku, And Mace while Plo Koon would of been Mauls equal with the blade and Qui Gon inferior yeah.
@lordbalthosadinferni4384 Dudeeee. Saying you are not performing needles grammar nazism when you just threw the biggest and the most smug grammar nazi rant I have ever seen...
@lordbalthosadinferni4384 I haven’t looked into Legends at all but it was obvious after reading the original comment that level eight is superior to level seven while high, mid, and low are subranks where high is superior to mid which is superior to low (you know, like nearly every ranking system that has ever existed). Even if you were confused whether the system increased or decreased in rank with higher numbers, he clearly restates what the power levels mean in terms of combat prowess in the second half of his comment. If you thought it was difficult to understand, instead of going on a pompous tirade about his grammar and punctuation, you could have just asked for clarification. Besides, this is a RUclips comment section, not a master’s thesis. It’s generally not expected to write in picture perfect English in a casual setting like this.
Maul was a badass and wouldve wiped the floor with almost any Jedi out there except for possibly Obi-Wan, Yoda and anakin in his prime. Dude was an absolute nightmare of a duel opponent.
What wound/injury qas maul takking about? Rhey should do an kelvin timeline kinda thing where Qui Gon Survives and so does Maul and then go from there ,trek and xmen have so many alternatives and crazy timelines n most of them dont interfreee with with rhe main story or retcons anything. Quigon Trains anakain,Maul kills shmi, dooku still turns but faces quigon, Dooku beyreys sidious n doesn't kill venteess n become rivals ....
Qui-Gon is the perfect maverick and unpredictable grey jedi, serving and following the will of the force and no surprise that he would surprise Maul in respect of the challenge as a saber opponent that he will face in his life and ends up having to beat him with a cheap trick and surprise, that seems dishonourable to a warrior like him as he cannot outlast him in a stand-up duel..
He's not a Grey Jedi. Qui Gonn was fully in tuned with the Light. Just like Ahsoka currently, full Light Side adherents, who were fully aware of the fact the Jedi were corrupted by stagnation.
@@YoungHarlem110352 I agree to disagree here. As although they are certainly very in tune and in touch with the living force and light as a whole They do what they think is right and not following the commands of the council, which was being wise in face of the order's stagnation, still makes them rogue and operating beyond the orders constraints and support. Making them grey jedi.
@@YoungHarlem110352 Thanks as I grew up with legends verse. Was going for that as a definition of the term, rather than what the new disney cannon has it down as being..
Darth Maul was better than them, Qui Gon..slower and was taken out easily when one on one with Maul. Maul was better than Obi Wan but..showed a flaw with the darkside, when met with calm and a lack of hate there was no darkside conduit to further initiate an attack and left him open to get cut in half..it was the force in the end.
To be fair on there Tatooine duel Qui Gon ran low on Stamina because before the fight started he was running for a long while while one of Mauls legs were injured but Maul had more stamina on his side since he came in on a flying speeder moped while Qui Gon along with Anakin running with there feet yeah.
Qui Gon would have been a father figure for anakin if he trained him while Obi Wan was more a brother so im sure Ani would have turned out alot different if Qui Gon lived
Obi-Wan should be ashamed as well because it turns out all he had to do was apply a little bit of the force to qui-gon's belly and he would have survived from what I've seen in Disney's version of the story. 🙄
Obi Wan and Qui Gon should have just stood there and made Maul make the first move. The fight would have stayed in the hangar and then the Jedi would have killed Maul.
Okay, here are the problems I have in this video: 1.) In your video "Why Qui-Gon Meditating TERRIFIED Darth Maul - Star Wars Explained" you said that in his duel against Qui-Gon on Tatooine, Maul sensed in Qui-Gon that here was a jedi could potentially beat him. Yet in this video, you say that Maul is the superior combatant to both Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon. So which one is it? You can't contradict yourself. 2.) You say that Maul became "a hungry, rabid dog." Yet we all know Maul's force abilities and his skill with the lightsaber. His other skills include this: Due to his Zabrak heritage and his intense training at the hands of Darth Sidious, Maul was able to withstand immense amounts of physical pain. While usually preferring to wield a lightsaber, Maul had sufficient skill with a blaster. At age fifteen, he managed to hit his fellow students, Fretch and Hubnutz, in both their right arms with a stun blaster during a training exercise. When Maul grew older, he shot a Nikto in the forehead and squarely hit a Phuii in the neck in his raid against Black Sun. Maul was highly skilled in espionage, surveillance and tracking, being used primarily as a covert operative during his apprenticeship. While not the grand schemer Lord Sidious was, Maul was highly intelligent and a competent political and military strategist, gaining control of Cog Hive Seven's gangs, conquering Mandalore, and creating a powerful criminal empire over short stretches of time. Maul had also mastered the use of the lanvarok. Sidious also gave Maul the powerful Sith Infiltrator Scimitar which contained a cloaking shield generator. This vehicle was developed by Raith Sienar, the man whose company would later develop the TIE/LN starfighter for the Empire, and Darth Tenebrous, who had trained Darth Plagueis. Maul had learned to use Galactic Basic Standard, but like his master before him, he was also taught on how to read, write, and utter out the words of the ancient Sith tongue. He could even speak Huttese and Twi'leki. So it's fair to say that Maul was NOT a hungry, rabid dog.
Darth maul didn't have Time to think about anything. He was cut in half, bleed to death and fell down a deep pit. He was long dead and his body had long decayed before the sisters found him. I reject felonies misinformation he could be and was brought back to life.
So much lore for such a minor character, it’s a shame that fans obviously loved this villain from the get-go while he was given no backstory or fleshed out at all prior to being killed. The prequels f*cked up so badly
Wen maul comes in as qui gon and the group are trying to leave Its almost like maul rushed it he want more than nothing to prove him self on nabob he held his ground not the high one tho his style duel blade he used his game and Anakin suffers sidus should have trained him as a sith assassin than apprentice zabrack male culture is raw almost like animatic passion from young the are marked with achievements maul was taken by Sidius as plot he wanted mother townsend original but instead took her son paltptine always had a palm and maul was just to raw the comics the man had a bad deal but he was one who sensed and tried but Ashoka was sent to mandalore what if qui gon got to train maul
That passage of Maul's thoughts through the first duel were a thing of beauty. So much detail, in actions that took seconds.
And that came from a book directed at young kids too.

Maul didn’t kick Obi-Wan into the reactor shaft.
Mauls journal is worded like how doug from UP sounds
I am sure I also read that the entire area had been flooded with dark side energy prior to the duel. Without that Qui-Gon would have defeated Maul and fate would have been different.
I love how beautifully they end the maul obi-wan conflict. It is a short scene with so much story built into it!
Incredibly insightful 👌🏻
They need to come out with a series going into Qui-gon's story more
It would be cool if they had flashbacks in Attack of the Clones of Obi Wan Kenobi training Aniakin Skywalker at each age, I might be wrong but I think Aniakin was 9 or 10 during the Phantom Menace so seeing Aniakin growing up to where we see him and Obi Wan in the beginning of Attack of the Clones would be super cool, I say all of this cuz No.1 again it would be really cool and No.2 I feel like this should be important to Star Wars Lore or something similar cuz all we get to see in Attack of the Clones is Aniakin at the late/ending stage of being a Padawan..
THIS IS SO GOOD 💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯
You'd think that maybe.. and just maybe after Exar Kun someone would idk learn how to fight against the double sabre/sabre staff but hey let's just wing it 😂
That moment in Episode 1 where Qui-Gon disengages from combat and meditates while Obi-Wan is shown to be sweating, and uneasy was perfect.
I thought Maul as 20 years into training when he beat Qui-Gon. Sheev found him as a child and raised him after all.
He thought so much in such a short time!
Qui-Gon earned Maul’s respect by never asking for it and adhering to his principles.
Excellent video
Maul is so under rated
Fantastic
QUI GON GOT ICE IN HIS VEIGNS!🥶🥶🥶
I sometimes think about an alternate reality where Darth Maul defeats sidious after taking the boy on the desert planet. Training anakin in the dark side until anakin becomes a Sith. Think about how strong Darth Vader would've become.....
12:31 What about Yaddle?
Yeah he seemed real ashamed as he toyed with Obi-Wan. That must’ve been the last thing on his mind.
It's always interesting
Darth Maul was a far younger and more athletic duelist. Zabraks also have greater strength, resistance to pain and a redundant heart & circulatory system.
Qui-Gon’s greater skill and Maul’s overconfidence were the determining factors that led to the stalemate on Tattooine.
At 9:30 choir Qui-gon wasn’t really a Jedi he was a gray Jedi he was about to leave the order just like master Sipho Diaz and he got killed by Palpatine before he could unveil the Sith plans to the Jedi council but both were more gray Jedi
5:06, because of my wound, when was maul wounded before fighting Obi Wan?
Im asking the same thing
Sand in his eye.😂
I would say either a previous fight w a jedi or seidious hurt him during training
He did not find the #AlmightyLoonie in Qui Gon Jinn's possession... 🌎💘💰
Imagine being stuck behind rotating shield doors when you have a light saber than can cut the mechanisms projecting the doors apart easily. 😂
Which might have caused an explosion that severely injured whoever did that due to proximity
Did he not use the force to push Kenobi into the reactor shaft, and not a kick, as was said in this video?
Question to Star Wars fans. We know Form 4 does not age well and has many weaknesses if it cannot overwhelm their opponents quickly, but if Qui-Gon was in his prime, would he defeat Maul? Would he be as centered in his 30s like he was in his 50s?
If you look carefully, do we see Mormon missionaries among Jar-Jar's people?
If they hadn’t killed off qui gon so soon, chances are they would have managed to mess up his character and find a way to make us not like him as much. Perhaps*
Maul didn’t quickly fall to the floor, Kenobi kicked him.
Qui-Gon was ultimately not as good as Obi, Obi beat both Maul and Vader/Anakin TWICE EACH, he was true Jedi.
It's a damn shame that none of this rich background is explained in the prequels. On the screen it looks like Maul pretty much had his way with Qui-Gon without any real challenge.
Maul is so interesting
In Legends in terms of weapon mastery Maul was a low eight level duelist tied with Plo Koon with Qui Gon being a high seven duelist and Dooku/Mace being Mid eight duelists and Yoda being a high eight level duelist around TPM Era so only Jedi that could of beat Maul on even ground with a lightsaber and no cheap shots where Yoda, Dooku, And Mace while Plo Koon would of been Mauls equal with the blade and Qui Gon inferior yeah.
Legends is irrelevant. A teenage Ahsoka beat Maul ffs.
@lordbalthosadinferni4384 Dudeeee. Saying you are not performing needles grammar nazism when you just threw the biggest and the most smug grammar nazi rant I have ever seen...
@lordbalthosadinferni4384I read it fine, maybe your comprehension skills are lacking?
@lordbalthosadinferni4384 bronze, silver, and gold in different levels denoted by the ascending numbers. Smartass
What about Mace Windu.
Qui Gon dies from a stab to the gut, but Maul survived being cut in half. Great writing.
Both survived really qui gin through the force maul through hate
What wound/injury qas maul takking about? Rhey should do an kelvin timeline kinda thing where Qui Gon Survives and so does Maul and then go from there ,trek and xmen have so many alternatives and crazy timelines n most of them dont interfreee with with rhe main story or retcons anything. Quigon Trains anakain,Maul kills shmi, dooku still turns but faces quigon, Dooku beyreys sidious n doesn't kill venteess n become rivals ....
So ashamed Maul tried the exact same tactic against Obi-Wan and got rekt for it
Qui-Gon is the perfect maverick and unpredictable grey jedi, serving and following the will of the force and no surprise that he would surprise Maul in respect of the challenge as a saber opponent that he will face in his life and ends up having to beat him with a cheap trick and surprise, that seems dishonourable to a warrior like him as he cannot outlast him in a stand-up duel..
@@wedgeantillies66 ahhh, the Legends version of Grey Jedi. The slur version of the word.
I agree with you there.
@@YoungHarlem110352 Thanks as I grew up with legends verse. Was going for that as a definition of the term, rather than what the new disney cannon has it down as being..
A good lesson for all us Dark Side users.
Day 412 of asking for a part 3 of what if anakin was trained by qui gon
Goooooooddddd⚡️⚡️⚡️⚡️⚡️⚡️⚡️⚡️⚡️
Obi-Wan should be ashamed as well because it turns out all he had to do was apply a little bit of the force to qui-gon's belly and he would have survived from what I've seen in Disney's version of the story. 🙄
I disagree. It was Obi-Wans attachment to the people he loved and cared about that fuled his greatest fights.
Obi Wan and Qui Gon should have just stood there and made Maul make the first move. The fight would have stayed in the hangar and then the Jedi would have killed Maul.
Qui-gon is the only Jedi I respect
Well he is not a Sith Assasin, rather a Sith Lord
Palpatine needed Maul to be destroyed because he would have destroyed the emperor and his plans had he remained his apprentice
BTW
for all the sh the prequels get,
Liam Neeson and Ewan McGregor played the role of a jedis PERFECTLY from a lore perspective
Okay, here are the problems I have in this video:
1.) In your video "Why Qui-Gon Meditating TERRIFIED Darth Maul - Star Wars Explained" you said that in his duel against Qui-Gon on Tatooine, Maul sensed in Qui-Gon that here was a jedi could potentially beat him.
His other skills include this:
Due to his Zabrak heritage and his intense training at the hands of Darth Sidious, Maul was able to withstand immense amounts of physical pain.
Damn I thought he was weak that’s messed up
They should’ve brought back Mace. Or Maul. Legit anyone except Palpatine lol
Makes you wish we lived in an alternate world where we get the continuation of George Lucas’s Star Wars, in stead of the reality we got with Disney!!!
Darth maul didn't have Time to think about anything. He was cut in half, bleed to death and fell down a deep pit. He was long dead and his body had long decayed before the sisters found him. I reject felonies misinformation he could be and was brought back to life.
OBie Tricked maul.
So much lore for such a minor character, it’s a shame that fans obviously loved this villain from the get-go while he was given no backstory or fleshed out at all prior to being killed. The prequels f*cked up so badly
You know he was the intended sequel villian right?
@@rgmontoya3398 I’m sure they intended to make the movies good, but they didn’t
Nice.
Isn't this your 4th or 5th video on this?
