As someone who was in college when this came out it was remarkable! I was always so upset at the end when the quality went down but I have such fond memories of the other two seasons! Thank you for putting this on the channel.
The first mature show for Disney Afternoon shows that was ahead of it's time. I enjoyed every aspect of it's storytelling process. It's about family, loyalty and protecting the people, other Gargoyles and the helpless. The look of the characters especially with David Xantos was modeled after William Ryker from TNG. The late Nichelle Nichols voiced Eliza Maza's mother with Tony Jay voicing Anubis.
The series character Macbeth was not based on the eponymous character of the Shakespeare play but in fact the actual High King of Scotland, who by all historical accounts was a good monarch and is depicted as such in the three-part "City Of Stone" -- though the deliberate distortions of the Shakespeare play are woven in as additional detail of Macbeth's backstory to show how his reputation was sullied over the centuries. Another series nod to actual history: the Viking leader Haakon who attacks Castle Wyvern was based on the actual chieftain Haakon II, killed in battle A.D. 994 (the year the series starts) during an attempted Viking invasion of Scotland.
Please Note: The episode where the Gargoyles crew meets Anubis is titled "Grief." and the Hunters are the descendants of Duncan, not Gillecomgain's. We apologize for this discrepancy.
I love the whole series of gargoyles. Including the disappointing third season. Despite its shortcomings I feel that the third season still deserves to be on DVD. If only for the sake of completeness of the series.

Just finished watching this series again and was really impressed at how well it still holds up. The characters are so complex and well written for a 90s daily animated series and it never insulted the intelligence of its audience. And although the stakes were certainly lower in the last season, the quality of the writing never diminished. Truly a great show that deserves to be continued today.
I was in middle school when I first started watching Gargoyles. My Englisg class was reading and acting out Midsummer Nights Dream and Macbeth at the time and my classmates and I had fun comparing the characters on the show with the characters from the plays.
I didn’t quite understand the depth of this series as a kid but could easily identify that it wasn’t just a kiddy show. Gargoyles and Xmen helped shape my childhood
2:56, ironic that Goliath acts as Broadway's surrogate father when his real father is literally also next to him. And yes, it was confirmed by directors that Hudson is Broadway's dad. Honestly, after seeing "A Lighthouse is the Sea of Time", I can see the relation.
That wasn't the only stars of Star Trek that had a part in Gargoyles, there was Nichelle Nichols who played Elisa Maza's mother, Kate Mulgrew aka Captain Janeway played Titanya, Michael Dorn aka Worf was Coldstone and Taurus, Brent Spiner aka Data played Puck and of Course LeVar Burton aka Geordi La Forge for a small role of the trickster Anansi
The archimage was played by the actor that gave Star Trek V The human representation on Nimbus III, Star Trek VI Klingon Chancellor Gorkon & TNG Gul Madred. The warden of Rura Pethe in Star Trek VI, a Captain Ahab type in an episode of Voyager, and the voice of the commanding officer in Medal of Honor on X-box... turns up as Odin. Paul Winfield... who died as 2 different commanders on Star Trek... Captain Terrell in Wrath of Khan & a Tamarian Captain in TNG... was Hudson's blind friend Jeffrey. Part of the reason I wish Gargoyles could be revived under his original leadership... I kinda wanna see Patrick Stewart, Gates McFadden, Colm Meaney, Armin Shimmerman.. and as many Trek cameos as possible take turns being memorable parts of the franchise. Let Brent Spiner loose as Puck again.
@@varianschirmer9375 It would be amazing to see Let Brent Spiner as Puck aka Owen Burnett and what Patrick Stewart can do with a new character who is a villain turned ally with his own story of why he became the bad guy associated with Macbeth or any other villain instead of another after Demona I would also love to see Tim Curry return as Anton Sevarius
Oh there were a number of in-jokes and lines which only adults would fully get. In one episode in which the Pack were in prison and Fox and Hyena are in their cell, Hyena is idly shooting cockroaches with rubber-bands while Fox is reading either Sartre or Camus (can't quite remember which). When Hyena sneeringly asks Fox why she's reading that "stuff", Fox sarcastically replies "Because Nietzsche's too butch and Kafka reminds me of your little friends there." In one scene which I am still surprised managed to make it past the Broadcast Standards & Practises people, Coldstone is watching Elisa and Human-Demona fighting in Central Park. Very clearly leering at the two women, Coldstone remarks to Macbeth "Well, THIS is diverting." Michael Dorn's delivery of that line was downright wicked, likely his most favourite line in his series episodes.
@@LordZontar oh for sure! My point is more that not everything on the list is exactly things that only adults would notice. Some points are more about things like morally grey situations and whatnot.
I’m thankful that I was a part of the generation that grew up with this series. I’d love to see a properly done revival of the series possibly a continuation from where it ended, just as long as it’s done properly and not halfassed, then it really could become great and introduce a whole new generation to this underrated and iconic series.
My favorite character of the gargoyles series was Elisa mazza there were several reasons why I liked her first her personality and attitude second the fact that she was a mixed race person meaning native American and African heritage the fact that she was no damsel in distress she was one tough woman.
If I had to pick one, it would be Elisa. The idea of making one of the two main protagonists a half Black, half Native woman and treating it as perfectly normal was such a radical departure for that time.
Though I was aware of this show in the 90's I never paid it any attention. When NECA started doing action figures based on the series recently, I started buying them purely because (as a long time collector of cool looking figures) I thought they looked great. So, when I noticed that the show was streaming on Disney+, I started watching, just to familiarize myself with the characters that I was collecting. I did not expect it to be as good as it was and I was hooked and watched the entirety of the first two seasons. (I skipped the third season, as I had heard about the absence of the original writer/producer and the resultant drop in quality.) It's funny how you fall into things sometimes.
Gargoyles is definitely one of most rewatchable cartoons . They had very good cast most actors who voised characters in Gargoyles are from various star trek show.
This remains my favorite cartoon. Was in middle and high school when it came out and was a total nerd so I loved and appreciated all of the themes. Easily the best show Disney has ever made, great to be able to watch it again in its entirety in good quality on Disney+, maybe we'll see the Gargoyles gliding onto our screens in a new capacity some day.

If they recast the characters, I hope they give them voices fit for their roles. And former cast dibs on the most epic of supporting characters. While I cant picture Goliath without Keith David's voice.... I don't know where I was going with that sentence lol
Mistakes I noticed in the segment: 1.) Talon was Elisa's adopted brother; however, he wasn't really a villain. He was a leader of the mutate clan, and it was one of them, Fang, who was more of the criminal and turned against the other mutates. 2.) Goliath wasn't a surrogate parent; he WAS a parent. Gargoyle youth are seen as the children of the entire clan, and all the older Gargoyles are seen as their parents. Goliath was the biological parent of Angela, a female gargoyle, but Goliath was determined to maintain the customs of his clan and culture. He wasn't going to show her any special treatment or affection, and was reluctant to discuss the matter or her parentage given her near obsession with the matter. That's it. Didn't find any other errors. Well done for the most part.
Loved this series, the story telling was great and nothing felt force fed as modern shows and movies tend to be. Demona's story though, is more a story of the dangers of deceit and revenge than anything else, all the brutality she witnessed against her people was the direct result of her own treachery, even Gilcomgain, whos scars were made by Demona's claws
Came here just to say that, Demona's hatred was a direct result of her own actions and the more she tried to justify it and even the score...the worse it got for her.

Just an FYI for all you Gargoyles fans: announced at SDCC, Disney is partnering with Dynamite Comics to produce Season 4 of Gargoyles in comic form. This is going to be co-written and shepherded by none other than creator Greg Weisman!
Don't worry though, the "real" fans (heavy sarcasm there) will scream like banshees if Weisman introduces any topics that hurt their little fee-fees because it's "not *real* Gargoyles".
Knowing what I know now its no wonder why my generation is how it is! This is one of my most beloved childhood cartoons that has come back to memory from time to time. I'm happy Looper did this great video about it. I am loving what this channel produces that I been seeing lately that appeals to me.
This is still one of my favorite cartoons, all these years later. Disney, I love you, but you’ve really done Gargoyles dirty. Not only did we never get a Season 4 to wrap up the story, but you STILL haven’t released Season 3 to DVD and Season 2 is hard AF to get in physical media! Disney has dropped the ball on a lot of their older shows when it comes to letting us enjoy them again (can we also talk about Dave the Barbarian, Kim Possible, The Mighty Ducks cartoon, and The Real Cowboys of Moo Mesa?), but this one hurts the absolute worst. They kept the comics going, but not the show.
There are new canon comics being written right now. If we want more Gargoyles content, we have to show Disney it's profitable. Binge Gargoyles on Disney+, buy the new NECA figures, buy the comics when they come out. Disney understands numbers.
I watched this religiously when I kid and I can say that we 100% realized it was different and how interesting and intelligent it was. That’s why it became a cult classic. Kids aren’t stupid, they appreciate good storytelling and that’s what Gargoyles delivered 😊 I feel lucky that I grew up in a golden age of children’s programming and films.
Cartoons have actually always been ahead a bit in terms of diversity which is why all these nerds losing their shit over diversity is so odd. People complaining about forced diversity in ghost busters forgetting extreme ghost busters straight up had a guy in a wheelchair. They aren’t true fans
It’s sad because they will flip out over the tiniest bit of diversity. And it’s basically because they have been conditioned to do so over the last few years.
The names MacBeth, Puck, Titania and Oberon aren't just lifted Shakesperean plays; but were meant to be those characters (Lexington points this out in Puck's introductory episode). I.e - in the Gargoyle universe, Shakespeare's plays are stories based off of people/creatures that actually existed.
Oh man!! this was one of my favorite American shows growing up. Watching Anime and reading mangas as a kid, I always wonder why other American cartoons are so simple minded at the time.
Gargoyles season 1 and 2 went above and beyond for its day and today and well into the future, the series has aged perfectly, I swear if I had the money I'd pay for a true season 3 myself.
It was revived as comics a decade ago, and those, "Canon season 3", are being reprinted along with a NEW Canon season 4 that should be out starting in December!
You know what would be awesome, a gargoyles Hellboy crossover. They booth have a dark tone and themes, mythological figures and creatures, have sci-fi and fantasy elements, and have complex stories. The only differences is that Hellboy is a horror comic and some elements of Hellboy are inspired by HP. Lovecraft.
Regarding Weisman's 'demotion' and the production for the third season: Worst series of decisions EVER! Its right up there with Disney's decisions for the Owl House's third/final season. Thank goodness for the comic series (plural), continuing Weisman's real story.
As a person who enjoyed this show as a child, I can honestly say everyone underestimates children. Even as a kid I understood all of these things, maybe not completely, but it's what drew us in. When they tried to dumb it down for saturday mornings, it just felt ham-fisted and insulting. For some reason Disney never understood that kids can like, or even want, complexity in their entertainment.
Macbeth mostly mirrors the Scottish play, however- Lady Macbeth is a very compassionate soul in Gargoyles where she is the driving force behind some of Macbeth's crueler acts in the play. I'd say she's one major difference.
being born in 1985, this video hit me right into the nostalgia nerve :) i was so sad that only 2 seasons where translated to german (as far as i knew) and shown on tv and watched the whole series again when filesharing became a thing
I loved gargoyles. In dnd they are vicious hunters or killers but these guys especially gronk or the more dog like one was my favorite and in dungeons and dragons I wanted one as a mount or a half gargoyle character maybe a Hellboy type hybrid and I'm older now but if I get the chance I'm going to play one. I love the star trek voices which kept me tooned in every episode
It is Demona’s fault that the gargoyles were hunted to extinction by the Hunter. She attacked him, scarred him, and robbed him while he was a lowly stable boy. She brought it on to herself.
Not even just him, I'll bet she attacked, robbed and killed tons of humans in her lifetime, especially before meeting Macbeth and after their fallout. She helped cultivate the image humans had of Gargoyles being violent monsters, spreading fear and hatred of her race.
Aside from the Weird Sisters, the gargoyles, and the immortality deal, MacBeth's backstory mirrors real Scottish history, *not* Shakespeare's play that butchered MacBeth's reputation just to appeal to King James, who like the Hunters was also a descendant of Duncan's line through the Scottish dynasty of kings (while also merging with the English royal family).
@@rosalesjr I know, but my religion demands that I crap on Michael Bay every chance I get 😉 In all seriousness, I really would be leery of a live-action Gargoyles . . . anything, honestly. And the last time a teen-to-young-adult targeted animated property had a movie debut with a theatrical distribution (Batman: Rise of the Phantasm), it didn't perform well. It's just not something I could see succeeding, and that would push Disney back into pretending that Gargoyles doesn't exist again.

6:56 That was also with Lilo Stitch: The Series too!
Plus this version of MacBeth is closer to the actual King of Scotland, with the 3 witches being the only real Shakespearean reference
Oh man!! this was one of my favorite American shows growing up.
Loved watching this every day. Thank goodness for Disney+
Hear me out… a live movie
Hell no
Thank you for saying "Goliath and COMPANY"
It was revived as comics a decade ago, and those, "Canon season 3", are being reprinted along with a NEW Canon season 4 that should be out starting in December!
You know what would be awesome, a gargoyles Hellboy crossover. They booth have a dark tone and themes, mythological figures and creatures, have sci-fi and fantasy elements, and have complex stories. The only differences is that Hellboy is a horror comic and some elements of Hellboy are inspired by HP. Lovecraft.
Glad it's on Disney+, I've introduced my 5yo to it. It still holds up!
freaking loved this show it was my favorite, I miss the 80s and 90s
You're not alone
I loved watching gargoyles, especially goliath his voice was smooth. I love mythology so this series was good for me.
Keith David is a legendary voice actor.
the pronunciation of "Avalon" hits the ear wrong...
OMG yes!
🔥💯
Back when kids tv taught morals kindness, compassion, integrity and fortitude
3:38 "... weren't the only ones to make the transition from Star Trek to Gargoyles."
No kidding? You don't say?
The is one of my absolute favorite cartoons!😁
Regarding Weisman's 'demotion' and the production for the third season: Worst series of decisions EVER! Its right up there with Disney's decisions for the Owl House's third/final season.
Thank goodness for the comic series (plural), continuing Weisman's real story.
Gargoyles was very revolutionary when it came, but it never gets the respect it deserves.
Gargoyles back to back with Star Trek DS9 was a good. Childhood.
One of the best Disney cartoons ever.
Looper, you'll forget that the show brought King Arthur back to modern times
Literally started watching the show like two weeks ago. Just finished it yesterday. Talk about coincidence.
Was one of the best animated show when first appeared..
Definitely was a fan as adult ..
I loved 🥰 this show, since it was filled with various cultures, myths etc. it also was very mature for kids shows.
Macbeth mostly mirrors the Scottish play, however- Lady Macbeth is a very compassionate soul in Gargoyles where she is the driving force behind some of Macbeth's crueler acts in the play. I'd say she's one major difference.
I wish they make it a live action film 🤞🏾🙏🏾
Hell no
@@goldenvulture6818 I have faith that it could be a good film
Shut up and take my money
I loved this show, along with X-men, Batman, Spider-man and Exosquad.
...Or ... The Greatest Cartoon of it's Time!
being born in 1985, this video hit me right into the nostalgia nerve :) i was so sad that only 2 seasons where translated to german (as far as i knew) and shown on tv and watched the whole series again when filesharing became a thing
Tell the movie people to bring back Street Sharks!
Yes!!! And let it be done right 🙏🏾🙏🏾
As an inner city kid growing up back then, this is an still and remains an amazing series that I Plan to introduce to my kiddo
That diversity and depth of narrative won "Gargoyles" a number of citations from the NEA.
8:28 the storyline of the hunter is basically the same thing has attack on titan or the last of us part II, and makes it so much better
It is Demona’s fault that the gargoyles were hunted to extinction by the Hunter. She attacked him, scarred him, and robbed him while he was a lowly stable boy. She brought it on to herself.
True
You meant to write "she brought it on herself"
Not even just him, I'll bet she attacked, robbed and killed tons of humans in her lifetime, especially before meeting Macbeth and after their fallout. She helped cultivate the image humans had of Gargoyles being violent monsters, spreading fear and hatred of her race.
Gargoyles had the best story I was hoping Disney would turn in to a big budget Movie
It needs to be brought back!
one of my favorite shows
Aside from the Weird Sisters, the gargoyles, and the immortality deal, MacBeth's backstory mirrors real Scottish history, *not* Shakespeare's play that butchered MacBeth's reputation just to appeal to King James, who like the Hunters was also a descendant of Duncan's line through the Scottish dynasty of kings (while also merging with the English royal family).
How they kept making all the Transformer movies and no one attempted to adapt this is criminal!
Do you really want that schlep Michael Bay getting his hands on this?
@@nicholasfarrell5981 never said it had to be the same people. 🤷🏾♂️
@@rosalesjr I know, but my religion demands that I crap on Michael Bay every chance I get 😉
In all seriousness, I really would be leery of a live-action Gargoyles . . . anything, honestly. And the last time a teen-to-young-adult targeted animated property had a movie debut with a theatrical distribution (Batman: Rise of the Phantasm), it didn't perform well. It's just not something I could see succeeding, and that would push Disney back into pretending that Gargoyles doesn't exist again.
