I just purchased this because of this video and tried it out for the first time tonight and I can say it's worth every penny!! I can't hand sharpen a chisel to save my life, and honing guides didn't fit the chisels I have well enough for consistent results. This solved everything, and it literally only took me a minute or two for each chisel once I figured out how to use it. All I need now is some compound for the strop. Thanks Colin!!
You've made a wonderful choice with the M Power system. The more you use it the more you will fall in love with it's design and ease of use. Cheers my friend!
Very Cool product !!!!!!!!!!!! Also thanks for showing this sharpen tool !!!!!!!!
Thanks Colin. for a very clear video. I also bought this after seeing your video. The paperwork I got with mine wasn't nearly as clear as your video particularly as regards changing angles. I also found your reason for adding a bevel most persuasive. Finally the felt pen tip was most useful.
That is a great tool! Checked Amazon and they had the full kit, when I got home 2 hours later they were all gone! Ordered mine from Walmart, it ships direct from the manufacturer.
Great idea, thanks!
Enjoyed the new sharpening tool video. And enjoyed meeting you in person in K.C. this past Friday.
Extraordinary !!! you should write a book about woodworking. Also, i really love your bench ! it is possibly the nicest bench
This looks to be an Interesting tool. I spend a lot of shop time sharpening or touching up. I am going to give this system a try.
Nice bit of kit
Dat ding is perfect 👌bedankt voor de goede video👍
Thanks!
Having a sharp tool is my thing I love to sharpen and hone it's almost therapeutic for me
Got my system today. It works great. I got an inexpensive block plane from a big box store. The blade was crap. They must use a bad dremel tool to grind the surfaces! Had to use the 100 grit to flatten the back! Got the back fixed and worked my way up to 1000 grit. Took a good half hour to fix the blade. Put the plane back together and tested it. Don't know how well the edge will hold up, but I got beautiful curls from this cheap plane! Thanks Colin for featuring this sharpening system!
Thanks for the wonderful feedback :)
What a great tool.
Hi,
This is the egg of Columbus.
No longer measuring or keeping the chisel straight.
Thanks for sharing.
Willy from Belgium
👍👍👍
That's pretty cool..
Nice! I have the same system!
That's some tool. And, as always, great explanation. Colin, use the Sharpie to show the micro-bevel.
wanderfull.
I would love to see a follow up video in a month or two
Danke für,s zeigen.
Sehr gutes Ergebnis!
See you later alligator.
Nooice!
Are you still liking this method? What do you think of the WS3000?
Colin, this looks like a simple and very effective way to achieve acceptable sharp tools. So now that it's been almost a year since the release of this video, is this your go to sharpening method?
Awesome design with the 4 various angles, well 8 if you count the flip! 👍🏽
Probably cost a small fortune though. 🤔
Certainly did get the chisel scary sharp... 👌🏽
It's like $90 for the basic kit and $130 for the deluxe version. I think it's a pretty good value. If you were to buy decent diamond stones you'd spend at least that much.
@@ChristopherSalisburySalz
Cheers mate, really appreciate the response 👌🏽
I'm in Australia, so I dare say it might be a little dearer. Well worth the money though, and no second guessing the angles 😉👍🏽
I've had one of these for a couple of years but mine is the 'early' Trend version. Yours has many more bells and whistles. Someone has taken a great idea and made it better. What was the black bar with a screw in it?
The black bar is to rest the blade against to keep them straight.
Thanks for your positive comment, we will have a tune up kit available on our website within 2 weeks. It will contain the center it clip that you mentioned above.
Hi do they do replacement diamond stones for this thanks steve 👨🏼🦽🇬🇧
Look like a great sharpening tool. Where might I buy one from ? Or go for a hands on test drive.
by the way keep up the videos, they are informative and this is a great place to see new products and how they work. Thank you for sharing.
Amazon sells it for $90.00 US.
Order on line, Amazon or Walmart,
I'm always on the lookout for a faster system. This looks great! Is there a big difference between this and the Trend one with 4 angles? The price difference is about 40 bucks!
This looks like just an upgraded version of that kit, with the lapping plate, the strop on the bottom, more angle choices, and more grits included. In fact, M-Power sells one that looks identical to the Trend one on Amazon, and the stones appear to be interchangeable.
@@bloodgain Nicely spotted. M POWER is the manufacturer, all M Power products are sold exclusively under the Trend brand in the UK.
When I sharpen my chisels, I leave them at 30 degrees until they need sharpening and THEN I put the 25 degree microbevel. I think originally that was the idea so you do not spend all your time sharpening and taking excess metal off the tools. My chisels are fairly expensive so I want them to last as long as can be. I only grind full face after several sharpenings.
I wish I understood you a little better, im new to the sharpening game
Exactly the tool I was searching for. Would instantely go for it BUT I'm living in Germany. Hope the company will start delivery to Germany soon.
According to the website they are distributed in Germany as well. www.m-powertools.com
the US postal service will gouge you deeper than the chisel, triple price to Canada
Look for a similar system under the Trend brand, too. You might have better luck.
Amazon doesn't deliver?
Dictum will have the latest version added to their website any day now. Look for it here www.dictum.com/en/search?sSearch=M+Power+Tools Thanks.
I have seen thee around for a while. I wonder what the edge retention is like since the parallel scratch pattern would lead to a weak edge.
Thanks for your question. The edge retention is superior, parallel scratches or lateral striations are actually more robust than the same sharpening pattern created in a traditional sharpening process where the scratches run top to bottom of a blade. Perhaps an appropriate analogy is the strength differential in wood with excellent properties demonstrated running with or along the grain compared with the vulnerable brittle characteristics found in the same piece of wood but going across the grain. Hope this answers or helps in some way.
@@MPOWERTools1994 No, that makes no sense at all. Parallel scratches would introduce weakness at the edge as you are creating a thinner point right behind the very edge of the tool where it could fold or break. The wood analogy doesn't work because metal does not have grain in the same way wood does.
I'm looking at this system but curios how you keep the stones flat? Do you have to flatten after each use?
Diamond stones don't require flattening. In fact, a coarse diamond stone can be used to flatten water stones. Once the grit wears out -- which should be quite some time, at least comparable to traditional stones -- you just replace the stones.
I notice you had a little trouble holding down the chisel while sharpening. You might make a jig with a clamp (to hold the chisel) while sharpening.
Hi Colin - Why didn’t you slide the guide (black flat bar with a tension screw) over and place your chisel against it and the other edge? This will ensure your chisel remains square to diamond plate hone, and reduce the amount of pressure you have to use holding it in place.
That seems like a great observation.
Holt Mansfield - Thank you sir.
Great review on a pretty neat tool. But at 10:13 I could easily see a fingertip being accidentally taken off. Yikes.
Is it any good at sharpening bricklayers chisels too?
Cold chisels? Those don't need to be nearly as sharp or precise (at least I don't think so). You could probably do those on a stone or belt sander free hand and get good enough results.
My concern is that the sharpening plates would wear since they are in a fixed position...the blade is contacting the same area of the plate (pretty much a single line) as it goes back and forth.
OH don't worry , you can just purchase a set of replacement stones for the low low price of 69.95 . .
Plus shipping and handling . . Please allow 6-18weeks for delivery
You might be able to add a shim to raise/change the contact point.
Diamond plates don't really have wear-leveling issues and should last a long time.
nifty
I Love That Colin what is it called please I have to get one thanks
Look at the title of the video
Thanks Mate
Amazon sells it for $90.00 US. It's called "Mpower Fasttrack MK2".
I notice you don't use a honing fluid even a strop compound. I find the honing fluid makes a big difference on my diamond plates and strop pad using the compound
Can you recommend a product for either of those things? I'm interested...
@@maddogshwa I use Smith's Honing Solution for stones and then some regular polishing compound on my strop. Stanley also makes a honing solution but I find Smith's a little better.
I bought it and like it but postal system to Canada tripled the cost
😬 That's just not right!
For any other Canadians looking at this comment it is available on Amazon. CA
Interesting approach. Move the stone over the tool. The meat slicer model. But is the Sharpie really the most important tool in sharpening?
Can you buy this if so where
Here's the link to our direct store, currently out of stock with more due in next week www.m-powertools.com/fasttrack-mk2-bundle-chisel-plane-blade-sharpener.html?SID=pp3desm7m5njplsov33lsalp67 Otherwise find it from one our US dealers here www.m-powertools.com/dealer-index/
Glad you got rid of Nasty Nick. That guy's a real chiseller...
for the price. I do it the way I have been doing it for 50 yrs
I'm pretty sure I'm going to buy one of those. Otherwise you're looking at buying a honing guide, diamond plates and a leather strop.
Did you know that the closed captioning refers to you as calling Canet? Lol.
Got one of these. Thought is was broken and returned it. Got a second one. The amount of slop in the mechanism is about 5deg on the bevel and 2mm across the face. I'm mystified that anyone is okay with the results these produce: I'm getting a better result from holding a chisel to a belt sander, used to remove big chips than these things. I'd take a sheet of wet/dry sandpaper over these. I don't want to criticize anyone personally, but recommending these seems very suspect to me.
I bought one of these a while back and I was so, so disappointed. I guess it’s okay for preparing a blunt chisel but definitely not good for the final finish or touching up already sharp chisels. And, I certainly wouldn’t let my plane blades anywhere near it!! Sorry Colin, sold mine in favour of an 8,000 grit water stone so I’ll stick with the traditional method.
Absolutely agree, mine went in the bin, although I went to diamond plates. Worst money I’ve ever spent on sharpening gear.
@@brianwells7726 Yes, biggest waste of money ever! Fortunately I was able to sell it and get most of my money back. I guess it was okay for touching up a chisel on a job site but there was no way any of my good chisels and plane blades especially were going anywhere near it!
M POWER OR TREND????
"Somebody has put a microbevel on the back of the chisel...." Isn't it your chisel? Hmmm.... I wonder who could have done it? ;)
I just buy new ones. $20 for 3. Va $140 to sharpen
Ruined a perfectly good piece of paper.
I bought this system and I think it sucks. It feels really cheap. It takes forever. If you're going to sharpen chisels by hand get diamond stones and a veritas chisel jig.
I'm comparing sharpening methods.. try to shave your beard like Peter Millard just did!
You usually bring great ideas to the programme but this tool is not worth the effort , its only a toy, I cannot see anyone in the trade messing about with this Just dig out a water stone for fine finishes
This was clearly an infomercial. A bad one at that.
