BOEING 747 Packs off TAKEOFF. Max weight!! Closing the A/C packs increase engines power.

- Air condition packs use to pressurize and control the temperature in the Airplane.
But ..the air flow for the packs comes from the engine compressors. taking this air from the engines, reducing max power available for takeoff.
On a very heavy TAKEOFF, when performances are limited,
A packs off takeoff might be needed
Must not forget to reopen packs after takeoff ...
Great takeoff and cockpit management by the F/O sh-ko
As a passenger, I love take offs and landings! Pilots that fly these aircraft impress me to no end!!
Trust me, it's one of the most boring jobs on the planet. Sitting in the same chair for 6-12hrs babysitting something that's doing it itself aka., autopilot.
@@robertstancer4469 I have no doubt!!
Totally agree with the boredom easily starting at 250' AGL after takeoff until ROLLOUT and you then take control and taxi clear of the runway.
The old girl was indeed HEAVY - she took quite a bit of runway! Great video - thank you.
Indeed ☺️
Reduced power takeoff
Seemed like forever between the V1 and rotate call outs.
@@Sterlingjob yep. Packs off & everything. Terrible.
what i wouldn’t give to sit in the cockpit during takeoff. their knowledge of the instruments and al those dials ! Just so amazing!
747 /777 mx here ,i recommend going to a museum, to get a good look at a boeing flight deck, it's organized quite well , the newer boeing 777/787 are much cleaner and neater much less switches and toggles
Yes, that's correct
If you think you've seen dials you should see the dials on those old P3 aircraft
I also have to turn off the AC when facing steep up slopes with my old car! 😄
I was thinking the same thing. "Turbo" mode on my old Mazda 323 was turning off the AC while the car was accelerating. You could actually feel the car jerk forward a little with the boost in power.
I was fortunate. My first car was a 1974 Ford Custom 500. It was a PA state police car that was bought at auction by my neighbor. It was painted Grass Green and still had the spotlight mount on it. I bought it for $600. Everything worked incl A/C that I NEVER had to turn off..bc it had a 400 big block police interceptor motor. Plenty of HP to power anything needed! 😁
Alot going on in that takeoff! Got to keep focused
yes...i remember that situation well but with an electric car now it’s just a memory
@@patrickmollohan3082 I had a 1990 Caprice police car, GM actually put a switch on the gas paddle, when you floor it, it will disengage the AC
I like how slow and pronounced you speak to ATC! Many pilots speak like there is some sort of contest on who can read back the fastest.

Maybe walk to the Airport too as statically you're more likely to crash your car on the way to the Airport.
Just amazing. Never gets stale watching these cockpit videos. The knowledge and training you need is mind boggling. Not to mention the responsibility.. Great job. You guys are way underpaid. Only thing better is a shuttle launch

I just love the 747, in my opinion it is the most beautiful plane ✈️
It’s fascinating to watch the takeoff roll. Thanks guys 🙏
I have to disagree with the 747 being “the most beautiful plane.” While it is could be called the most impressive plane, IMHO, the most beautiful plane would be the Lockheed Constellation.
@@ravenswaal Dam you hit the nail on the head The Connie
Absolutely the most beautiful commercial aircraft ever built.
Sweet ride. The 747 is still the legend its always been 😍

Along with the MD-11, for me, are the mostly beautiful planes, ever
VERY Impressive! Seeing the end of the runway looming after the V-1 call makes this even more amazing to witness. Thanks for sharing this.
Retired airline pilot here. That seems to be a very tense flight deck. Not sure that I’d like to be in the jump seat. Why are both crew handling the control column on departure? That certainly wasn’t a SOP in my airline. The PF flew the aircraft on climb out whilst their colleague was responsible for R/T, autopilot inputs etc. Just asking .....
It does make it appear like the F/O is on training wheels, doesn't it? Very odd.
@@AirrowRocket Not odd at all - the captain has to be satisfied that the aircraft is behaving as it should and that the control inputs are correct. At no time were the inputs of the FO over ridden.
@@johnmclean6498 Sit back and learn son.
If a pilot can’t fly the plane proficiently by themselves, they should be fired. A captain has to serve a higher function than holding his FO’s hands.
Was wondering the same. Im no lilot but it waa odd to see that
I'm not a pilot. Always wanted to learn it but no money when I had the health and didn't want to go to the mililtary . These guys did a great job. Makes me wish I could be a pilot all the more, but I'm 68 y.o. and poor health. OH well. I watch it here.
I am 70 years old; Wanted to do this but not the money; I enjoy commenting; There are all kinds of study materials; When you get there if you could have you find 10 pounds of manuals and with experience it is found that they are very very useful
You can still buy a good computer and fly in a simmulator.
I’ve flown 747s for 14years as a first officer and not once had the captain “hold” the control column whilst I was pilot flying. Bad form, lack of trust in the pilot flying’s ability.
Lack of trust in his own flying abilities.
Yeah he does it in almost every video. I'm only a student pilot but I've heard it's bad CRM
I agree why captain holding to controls
I'm not even a pilot and that's the first thing I asked myself, if the first officer is the pilot flying why is the captain also holding the controls? He should be monitoring that first officer and undertaking other duties that the first officer would not be doing at that point surely? Wouldn't want to be a trainee pilot with that captain 😮
Cowboy Israeli outfit, but then look at the dumb comments from clueless amateurs here. I used to fly the B744 and B748 out of LUX 😉, I think this is in Liege.
Great video Captain! You guys were certainly at Max weight. The length of time between V1 and rotate seemed like eternity. Thanks for sharing. Blue skies my friend! ✈🛩🙏
Outstanding to see two "Officers" who has each other back work in such beautiful concert together.. Bravo 👏👏
The 47 always has a beautiful sound when the engines run up.
I love the procedures and handling of the controls on take off!
A beautiful aircraft inside and out! Its nice to see a crew work so well together.
It always amazes me the pilots knowledge of all those Instruments and buttons! Much much respect for them!!
Great flying with coordination and and total situational awareness.
Hands down probably the best camera angles I've ever seen on a flight deck and I've watched hundreds of hours of flight deck videos! Insanely immersive! Great work!
Captain...love your vids!!! I have had a bad flying experience 1953. Never been on a plane since. But...watching these is amazing!!!

Yes I would like to add my comment to others on here, Get your hands off the controls PM! The other PTT switch is on the radio panel on the centre console. And in my company the packs go off before entering the runway and not before taxi, that’s a bloody long time with no air for the passengers.
It was a cargo flight.
@ have you ever been on the flight deck of a 747 for any time without air? No I thought not or you wouldn’t have made your comment, basically the 747 is an oven on the FD as all the heat from the cabin rises and the only place it can go is in the hump. In my seven years as a 747 captain I never wore a jumper or a jacket.
@@johnmorris7815 Yes and no. I've been on the flight deck of a 747 when the APU was handling the A/C. And, I got my PPL and CPL in Tucson, so I've been in hot cockpits for much longer than these guys. Why did they turn them off so early and not start the APU?
@ on the Jumbo unlike all the twins I flew before and since the APU is just used for ground air/electrics and starting the engines, that’s it, it can’t even operate through the full flight envelope and is never required for any abnormal/emergency procedures. The normal after start checks turn the packs on and the runway checks include the packs for a packs off departure, the after takeoff checks bring the packs back on but they should be reinstated after acceleration altitude. What these guys were doing was none standard.
@@johnmorris7815 We have no idea what the APT was or the company, for that matter. This may be a normal procedure for this company at this airport. In my early years at Western (as a Dispatcher) we had several Special Procedures airports in the mountain states. I was at a 747 start-up airline and going through ground school when they lost funding and went out of business, so I didn't finish GS, but I seem to recall that the APU can be used below 10 or 15,000' MSL.
One of the best cockpit video i have ever seen. The angle and resolution combination is very unique and feels like sitting right in the middle of the pilots.. Plz make more such videos. Thanks very much.

There’s no “professionalism” demonstrated here - only piss poor CRM skills and a captain’s ego the size of Texas. This dude is dangerous.

No doubt about it.
These pilots, just like every other pilot, love their life to the fullest.
And I can understand them although I'm not a Boeing 747-400 pilot.
Unfortunately.
I can imagine that the love for flying, especially in the Boeing 747-400, is as important as the love for a woman who you love to the max and
unconditional.
Thumb up from The Netherlands.
Moroccan Amazigh.
Crazy how gradually it accelerates from a stop at wide open throttle, he hammered down and it was just creeping along.
Part of that is an optical illusion; that cockpit is a long ways off the ground. The other part is that they're trying to get 900,000 pounds airborne so acceleration was indeed a bit lame.
What's crazy is that it would still out-accelerate most cars on the road today!
Here is also need good TEAM'S works. Thanks for sharing all for their cool and steady handelinge.

Almost 10 seconds between V1 and liftoff. V1 3:52 call, liftoff 4:01. Gear up call 4:09, end of runway about 4:12. V1 to gear up, 17 seconds. That's sweating it a little.
Yep. LONG time between V1 & Vr. Liege must be dang near sea level-thinking pretty balmy day there to do a packs off takeoff-density altitude not really a thing except if the OAT was somewhere in the neighborhood of +35C & a fairly short runway-combined with close to MGTOW-most high bypass fans these days have a crapton of excess power & for him to be worried about performance..........
What a grown up 747 airline and SOP. They let the First Officer taxi and set takeoff thrust!
These men plan on living a long time----very alert, serious, and professional with that MASSIVE load and huge aircraft.
That bird ate up a lot of runway. Great video!
Not gonna lie, I didn’t think you’d even have to consider a packs-off takeoff in a 747, just because the old heavy is somewhat limited by what airports it can operate into and out of. Very cool to watch one in action. Thank you for sharing.

Why’s the Captain on the yoke while the FO is pilot flying. That would drive me nuts.
Discouraged at my operation...
@@skippynj1979 The pilot monitoring should have his hands NOWHERE NEAR the yoke, while the pilot flying is manipulating the flight controls. This captain is a scumbag micromanager with a MAJOR ego problem. I am type-rated in five jet transport category aircraft, including the 747-400. These procedures, shown by the captain, would get a guy fired here in America. Unacceptable.

@@V1AbortV2 not fired right away but a call to pro standards etc... retraining etc and possible downgrade.. i fly for an american operator as well.... but i agree there is a place and time for the captain to take controls.. holding your FOs hand like that is poor form and dangerous too.. ..
I fly for a major American carrier. In our shop, I'm sure it would be discouraged but I've never seen it in any case (~10,000 hours). That said, I'm hardly ready to dismiss the captain as an egomaniac for what may be nothing more than a bad habit. CRM in many countries is not understood/carried out in the same way it is here, though that is changing.

Good thing you turned the packs off before you started taxi so you can get a good sweat goin before you takeoff.
I love that y'all hand flew the aircraft instead of flicking the autopilot on at 800ft or something.
Why do you shadow the controls so much? The first officers must love you.
I have no knowledge of piloting except for watching many videos and this is the first instance I’ve seen of the non-flying pilot keeping his hands hovering on the yoke.
@@patrickmollohan3082 I have thousands of hours in 747's and this was never my technique. Hey the guy calls himself Captain Boeing so I guess thats the way he likes to run his cockpit.
@@patrickmollohan3082 Its dangerous having two sets of hands on the yoke, its been proven. Back when I was an FO, if a captain did that I stopped flying the rest of the trip. Refused to play that game. You either trust your FO or you dont. There is no in-between. Its just safer for the captain to fly the whole trip at that point, and maybe even consider downgrade, because if the captain is hovering, they aren't 100% confident with the airplane and they shouldn't be a captain to begin with.
@@captainchris93 I got it. Thanks to all you Pilots and FO's that sensibly explained the situation, and no, I wouldn't like to be bulldogged by the Captain if I was a first officer. I said my opinion based upon the fact that the 747F was taking off at its MAX weight and perhaps both pilots needed to really quickly change any settings. Also the FO, who is quite qualified, seemed awful tense. Maybe the bulldogging was making him apprehensive. Thanks for setting the record straight as far as real world experience. You cant dispute the folks who do this everyday for real.✈✈😎
@@patrickmollohan3082 Patrick I did not mean to come off as aggressive. I mean't to say i've sat in both seats in an airliner, and I can say that the control hovering can lead to a lot of dangerous scenarios. A good example is your performing a CAT2 approach, the go-around for those are like 100 ft AGL, not much time to decide whos hands are performing that go-around. Positive control of the aircraft is something they teach day 1 with your instructor. I believe what you said makes a lot of sense, this was a more tense situation. Its not everyday that a 747 uses up so much of that runway, usually they are operating in and out of airports with 10000+ foot runways. Maybe the captain should have taken this leg or maybe just this takeoff. I always have my hands close to the yoke, but I never have them where the FO might bump into them when moving the yoke, that drove me nuts when I was an FO. At my company we have a hand full of limitations for low time FOs and experienced FOs alike. These limits include runway lengths, visibility, crosswind components etc. If the numbers for those limits fall below specific thresholds, the captain automatically takes those takeoffs/landings. Another thing you mentioned was that he seemed tense. I was def confused as to why he sat so far back from the yoke. When his hands were on the thrust levers, his arm/elbow was fully extended. The pedals are def not an issue, as those can be moved forward or AFT with a crank on the floor. A captains job is to put his/her crew at ease. People function better when they are relaxed. If the captain hovering over the controls is causing the FO to be tense, then its the captains fault. If the captains not 100% comfortable in the aircraft, how can the FO expect to be? Im glad you brought that up.
too short !the video , but very very good !!!!! thank you very much
