As an engineer (albeit software,) I can confirm that this is standard. All we do is make things work, for as long as they need to work, using the tools we have available. As long as it cools the computer for the duration of the test (and doesn't damage anything,) then mission accomplished! They're probably just gonna throw it out afterward, anyway. No point in wasting engineering time (which is generally quite valuable,) on fixing a problem that doesn't need to be fixed :)

@@Xc31 I'm not sure what that's supposed to mean, but at no point did I say my work is shoddy. Getting new tubing or a new fitting would involve hours, if not days, of waiting, just to fix a problem that will never happen again after this one test. Fixing it is a huge waste of time and doesn't affect the outcome in the slightest. If they were selling the setup, or planned to use it again, it should absolutely be fixed permanently.

have you tried disabling intel speedstep? It was killing the performance of my inspiron. Whenever the mx150 reached 63°C, the clock would drop to like 400MHz and it happened a few times per second. Now the temperature stays at 83°C and the clock is very stable
it also caused the battery to slowly discharge when gaming because dell couldn't make a power supply big enough for the laptop
I have an asus strix iii and new bios also doesn't let me undervolt it, just downgrade bios to the last one you want and don't ever upgrade again m8

I'm thinking this is probably a product someone designed for themselves and decided screw it why not list it and see if anyone else is interested.
The temp drop probably has to do with elevating the bottom off of the desk. You'd be surprised how much cooler your laptop could be by just elevating it a couple cm.

When installing screws a good rule of thumb for tension if you do not have a torque screwdriver is to thread them in until they squeak, strip, then back them off a half turn. I've shared this tech tip with countless competitors.

I always want these random dumb things to some how end up being super effective.
This is super effective. Linus is shitting on it because it only stopped a tiny bit of thermal throttling when the CPU smashed into the 99c limit in their 21c office after running a single benchmark
Put this laptop in a 30c room and run it hard for a couple of hours and all of a sudden the underclock is significant and this cooling system with quick disconnects makes a ton of sense
I had a G7 with a 2070 that I retuned and now have 2 Alienware M17s with a 2070 and 2080. All of these, once they throttle a for a certain duration, will stay throttled an undetermined amount of time. Temps can drop back to normal but the throttling persists. Sometimes they un-throttle on their own, sometimes resetting the GPU works. Rebooting always works. I use Afterburner to limit voltage and they never throttle now. I only see a few FPS lost but gameplay is amazingly consistent now.

8:30 I've had this exact problem before it was greatly exaggerated by being direct die. When installing my artic freezer 2 on my direct die LGA 1151 system, I had not tightened the screws evenly the first, second, and third time resulting in me running circles I was trying everything. Rotating the cooler, listening for a pump failure, and even trying different thermal pastes. No matter what it stayed around 90-100c and I couldn't figure it out. I asked online and they told me to remount the cooler and very carefully tighten the screws evenly slowly. Lo and behold the system now barely scraped 60c under full load 4.9ghz OC.

I used to be obsessed with temps, then I learned that computers are pretty much made to handle any temp as long as your computer isn't sitting in the sun (and you don't even want your computer to last that long anyway because you'll upgrade in a few years and it'll just become obsolete!), I left my ipod in the sun one day and it got all kinds of screwy, flashed some screen as if there was a nuclear meltdown about to occur, but it STILL recovered

Honestly, something like this would be cool if it was integrated into the power brick, like the lines being a quick disconnect and the power brick having the rad and pump into it so when you want to use the full potential of your hardware, and have it be a reasonable noise level, you can just plug it all in.

There's been tests done using Plexiglas so you can see how the paste spreads, and that's like the second worst way to spread it (and it was like the worst I've ever seen anyone use that method). You want to do a big enough pea sized blob to have enough to cover the chip, right in the center, and use the force of the metal plate evenly on it to squish it out and it'll spread perfectly with no air bubbles and spread really consistently.
I'm go puke up in my bathroom now.

@@ThePandafriend I'll always press down gently and hold if there's a lack of mounting force. The issue then though becomes one not of the application method, but of the bracket it's self causing a lack of contact. Two distinct different problems (all be it with the same end result of poor heat transfer).

you know, they make a torque screwdriver? I use for consistency in psi for scope rings. Don't want to crush a tube, or even bend for that matter . internal parts are sensitive .
The lower CPU and GPU temps that sorted out were likely from the VRM pads compressing further, and fully contacting
Overheating VRM's will cause the stuttering while making the overall temps lower since it's getting less power
