PG’s John Bohlinger hung with Russell Lissack and Justin Harris of Bloc Party before their Nashville show. Though the guitars and amp were tried and true workhorses, both of their pedalboards looked like the dashboard of the Millennium Falcon.
Russell Lissack is a fan of Fender guitars and this ’03 Tele was purchased with his record advance when the band was first signed. He swapped out the original bridge pickup for a Seymour Duncan single-coil and uses Ernie Ball Super Slinky .009-.042 strings on all his guitars.
Next up is Lissack’s mid-2000s Fender Tele Custom. It’s totally stock-except for a plastic toy mounted under the pickguard that he uses for some weird, spacey noises mixed with ambient delays.

Russell Lissack has always been super underrated to me, especially on Silent Alarm, the guitars really make that album.
Everything made that album awesome
all 4 first albums are made soo goid thanks to the guitars
Bloc Party back then was filled with great musicians tbh. Great vocals, great guitar, great drumming.
@@birdo1180 yup, turned a bit commercial and rubbish now in my opinion
@@nickklok4955 they just let pair of the best drummer and bassists go, losing tong and moakes is like chopping your legs off, the drums and bass are groove for any track.
It is my sole ambition in life to have John tell me "sounds killer man"
John knows how to make it more like a late night talk show interview, he gets people to tell stories about their gear and gets them to actually play their rigs.

I met Russel at the Reading festival 2004 when I was 14! He was a super nice and friendly guy and we actually chilled for 5 mins or so. It was just before they blew up but he seems today to be the nice humble guy that I remember talking to all those years ago.
I love John Bohlinger, he's just such an awesome happy guy! Really enjoy watching him interview artists!
he should be the only person allowed to do rundowns.
Absolutely. I subbed to this channel cause of these Rundowns with Bohlinger as the host. But everyone else is cool. I just prefer John
You have got to be joking!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
what, would you prefer the super awkward coked out kid instead?
Something that resembles an intelligent and informed response. uhh cool, cool, oh yea, very cool. Ect. oh cool. Etc, Oh cool yeah, yeah, right, right, yeah cool, right. that's great. Etc. Very cool.........
John Bohlinger looks like a standard playable character on Guitar Hero. Also, he should be a playable character on guitar hero.
He's the love child of Billy Bob Thornton and Ace Ventura
This dude has come a long way since 2005 when you’d have been lucky if he spoke even a single word during an interview. (He only did group interviews back then.) I get it, he’s older now and therefore less self-conscious, but it’s incredible to see him carry a 35 minute video when, as an ultra-fan of the group, I swear I didn’t hear his voice even once until like 2007.
This dude does some creative stuff with pedals.
Crazy...If this was 7-10 years ago. I would be going crazy like a little fanboy. Years ago we have threads on forums just trying to figure out their setup and share pictures. Now here we are with a in depth video of everything.
AlwaysNewDepths!
I still go crazy like a fanboy even when Russell plays an e chord
god, this brought back the most vivid memory of being on the guitargeek forums and everyone losing their minds when an artist would jump in a thread to explain their rig. nothing will ever hit that rush
@@sanjaydass123 salute, spent tones of time on there as a teen.
Damn dude, Russell has been hitting the gym
'other gear' lol. Went straight over Bohlinger's head.
Call me retarded but it went over my head as well. What does he mean?
Gear can be UK slang for drugs.
Never would have known that.
looks like he got it, to me
Pretty sure he got it lol. We use that term in America too.
Where the heck is Kele's run down?
Thank you so much, Premier Guitar.
This video had the secrets to everything....this is perfect. Russell inspired me to pick up a guitar 8 years ago...
silent alarm is one of the few albums where all songs are great and not just an album of two tracks and eight tries to copy them. real indie rock masterpiece
Damn, he's a very smart guitarist actually! There's hundreds of pals using tons of pedals out there, but this guy really impressed me.
This is perfect, it's strangely nice hearing your idols talk about their gear. I have the exact telecaster as Russel's and it's easily my favourite guitar :)
Super Bloc Party fan here and Russell Lissack is super underrated as a guitarist. Super underrated and super talented.
I love johns rig rundowns -cos he doesnt spent the time trying to make out how best mates he is with every act or talking about his own gear like the other interviewers do and he just explores and appreciates the gear and the players desire for there tones,
Russell's so creative and unique when it comes to his arrangements and use of pedals, as well as unorthodox/non guitar gear. And he plays so damn clean! Always so tight live
I love Bloc Party but man they'll never make another SIlent Alarm or anything close
loved the hell out of silent alarm... but they've jumped the shark with their new tunes.
For me, 'Four' was as classy as 'Silent Alarm'. Hymns meh, i still like them so much hahaha.
pipemoreno94 Four was great. But nothing will ever touch Silent Alarm imo
I agree
I agree, Four answered the Silent Alarm demand. Hymns would've worked best as a Kele album.
Met Russell 2 months ago at London's Drop Dead Gorgeous festival! He truly is kind and humble! I told him he is my guitar hero. I hugged him and he gave me a pick! Such a wonderfully kind person.
Really happy to see PG is almost always now getting the bassists gear too. Keep it up!
I always love John's videos. So enthusiastic. Keep up the killer work, love these rig rundowns.
No wonder my guitar didn't sound the same when i used to try and do bloc party covers with just a squire strat going through a practise amp lol
like the rest of us, john fell in love with russells playing. russells playing needs to be in the hall of fame for making people feel the feeling of deep emotional love and the forever feel of it and all its emotions
Great great great!!! You can tell John enjoyed this one a lot
20:25 Russell in 2016: "I don't want it [pedal board] to get any bigger"
Cut-to, Russell in 2019: *THREE huge PedalTrain boards laid out in an arc*

This is my favourite video right now. 35 minutes! Amazing!
and I just saw it today O.o
So glad to see this rundown!
My favourite band. Thank you
Thanks for this, there's a lot of good stuff here to digest.
I would watch 10 hours of John Bohlinger interviewing guitarists. He´s such a great reporter
Russell has been such an underrated guitarist. He’s amazing!
12:30 best Rock n’ Roll moment ever
definitely one of the more inspiring rigs out there
Pleasantly surprised by this band. They're pretty creative.
I managed to grab a new, ex display Boss SL-20 Slicer myself a couple of months ago for less than half the price they were going for. Judging by my experience of trying to find one I think I probably bought the last one in any shop's stock, I'm not sure if it's discontinued but if you see a used 1 going anywhere, buy it!!
Calling it a tremolo pedal doesn't do it justice, it's more of a rhythm generator and you can create some great rhythm tracks and loops with it. I own more pedals than I care to remember but the Slicer is 1 of my favourites, I love it 😆👍
I need to haul out my Bloc Party albums. Fuckin loved this band way back when.
Shame there was no overview of Kele's rig
Pllzz do a radiohead rig rundown!
Julius Miller that could be a series
Ha ha Teddy you totally beat me to that comment that Radiohead would have to be a complete series. good one.
I feel like god came down and showed us his secrets.
Justin sounds so chill
he's the chillest
He has such a sweet and calm personality. Really cool guy.
BOY YOU BEST LISTEN TO JOHN, HE KNOWS HIS SHIT!
That pedalboard is huge, I can't believe there isn't any tone suck as many pedals and cable there are.
alot of that has to do with his signal chain, if it is set up right then there won't bet any noticeable tonal difference. in my personal experience at least.
I'm just stating my personal opinion, there are no absolutes in music imo sir. If your signal chain is optomised for the outcome you are going for it will sound better than if you just plug things in in whatever order you want and use beat up or ineffective patch cables.. you can also bolster your tone by using certain pedals at the beginning and at the end of your signal chain, namely a compressor at the beginning and a noise gate at the end. I'm not trying to argue by the way, my perpose for this comment is to inform people who might be interested and stumble opon this comment, there are many configurations and perposful pedals that in my opinion will troubleshoot way things like tone suck, or a signal chain that can seem really complex. Most of the time there are solutions to problems that keep people from trying intimadating or unconventional routes in guitar tone exploration, if we don't explore different approaches then we can never find solutions that might benifit guitar players as a whole.
boss pedals have buffers in them. one buffer at the start, middle or end of the chain will counter tone suck.
+chris kozub nah.
Love Matt and Gordon but I'm glad to see good replacements. I'm curious as to why Gordon didn't take his gear for YL.
Don't know how it works but maybe the bands money was used to buy the gear instead of gordon's or who knows maybe he gave it to the band
@@nederlandsefrhd he sold the blue bass who was used to play in bloc party. he have another in YL
block Party along with Mogwai have 2 of the best debut albums of all time. silent alarm and young team
is he totally baked? I feel like he's concentrating so hard to act natural that everything comes across spacey and forced. not that I know from experience or two, hundred.
Tim Flohr he seems fine to me.
Maybe he's shy? For most of the band's early career Russell appeared to be rather camera-shy (very few vids of him actually speaking, and even when he did, he mostly hid behind that absurdly-long fringe). I'm actually pleasantly surprised to hear him speak on camera for as long as he does in this interview. Dude was always cooking up some interesting stuff on guitar. Big difference in temperament now.
LMAO, he’s the shyest man in the universe. Obviously, he’s opened up a lot in recent years, but as a shy man myself, I can promise you that he works at it constantly. The fact that he was able to carry this video so well was pretty incredible to me, honestly, because I’ve been a fan of this group since before their first album was even announced and do not remember him speaking even once publicly until the touring of their second album.
Someone needs to get this dude a digitech space station !
This is awesome
Russell and Kele have been hitting the gym for sure haha so different from their scrawny, punk look from the Silent Alarm era
out of curiosity, anyone know what seymour duncan pickup is in that tele?
Rig rundown of The Lennon Claypool Delirium would be sick
Anyone know what setting he is using on the Line 6 M5 at 19:13?
Do Johnny Marr next
Elijah Murdoch How easy do you think it is just to summon Marr
@@Oialca I don't know let's ask Mozz.
please do an "explosions in the sky" rig rundown this summer
+1 BareMetalMods, John Bohlinger is ALWAYS up-beat & he has that lil thing called "PERSONALITY". He's also been on the pro level himself for years so he brings a lot of experience. I rarely watch the other guy's rundowns unless it's an artist I really like. Rebecca D. is okay. Like John, she gets the details while trying to keep it light hearted & fun at the same time(& yeah she"s kinda cute). But, hands down, John's the man!
I built that Rafferty FuzzOrius for Justin. He actually ordered two. I presume the other is a backup. Nice to see he has kept it on his board. You can see more of my pedals at facebook.com/raffertyguitarpedals or the video demos on my RUclips channel.
LOVE that 2nd tele
I like this!
Nice one, i think it's funny that the think they have to much pedals, after you saw the boards from Doug Wimbish and Vernon Ried :-D
Wish you've done this with the complete former members. Would love to see Gordon Moakes' gear as well.
Gordon did his Young Legionaire gear
fucking hell i remember when russell was so shy, now hes a dude... not the bloc party i remember from my youth
I’m really going to have to have my tech explain how all my stuff works...🤣🎸🎼🎶🎶🎶
Finally!!!!!!!!!
very cool...
the delay that can play only wet reversed signal i know is danelectro wasabi or backtalk, both discontinued. is there any new delay with this function?
there is the potential to do that with the new tc electric flashback 2 tone print editor........i've not got it sussed yet but i'm sure it can be done!
The original flashback does it if you set the feedback to zero
Russel is awesome. Great that he mainly plays off-the-rack gear too.
Funniest interview ever, John is such a great interviewer.
Russell been working out!
30.50 the Diabolic pronouncement of the DiaboliK pedal, it made me laugh.
What about the synths??
do WES BORLAND's rig rundown
Where's Kele's rig?
He didn't participate or give us the OK to speak with his tech about his setup.
+Premier Guitar should do a rig rundown on ed sheeran
yuk
I'll give you one- Some tiny acoustic into a looper, into the PA.
wack
JB is high on life
17:40 best effects :D full bottles of beer :D
Haha “rather than other gear” the British slang went over John’s head there.
Sure, but what guitar did Louise get?
Dam what is the name of the song of the intro! I can’t figure it out but it sounds so familiar!!!
The love within
this is fuckin insane i never seen this video til now wow
That Mario theme thing was pretty rad.
Wait a minute I think you can hear the toy on the track "Where Is Home?" As well as "Only He Can Heal Me"
No the Toy is only getting used in 'Only He Can Heal Me'
In 'Where Is Home?' I guess he just using a Loop Pedal like in 'Octopus'
@@gameofleon8868 He uses it when they do Uniform live (not on the record), but they haven’t played that song in at least a decade.
Do a rig rundown with Ghost on their new tour!
24:16 *Nice Grolsch beer washer strap-lock*
Guitarists find their tone the same way traders find their indicators and studies
Experimentation and practice over many years!
@20:30 i think he means "things replace things"
Do you guys ever think about doing a foo fighters rig rundown? Like once they're are back at it with badass shows?
We've tried on their last two tours, but they shut us down both times. We'll keep trying though!
+Premier Guitar thanks, always love you guys. What bands would you have wanted to do before the band members died? Nirvana, lynrd skynrd?
+Bruh Rainyday711 I mean guitarists
When i first hear silent alarm i fell in love with them because of guitars. Then i saw their live performances and noticed that russell completely copied jonny greenwood.
Even his haircut and playing style is like him. And thats why i like him. I wish everyone could be that creative.
Breaking Benjamin next! Please lol I gotta see that ESP BB Sig and all of Jasen's rig
i used to have a little toy gun with those same sounds and i would just hold it up to my pickups... lol
James Iha did the same with a toy gun.
John "I gotta hear it" Bohlinger
my head hurts!
"My Ticket Home" enough said.
did they really hang the sm57 down in front of the amp? 😂
We had it there, but then we plugged our XLR into the band's Sennheiser. Sometimes you gotta do what ya gotta do...
Which is the name of the initial song?
Natalia Abal bloc party - the love within
I love how John plays it off on the "toy inside the guitar" ahahahahah What if he said "No dude, that's totally Steve stevens idea from 30 years ago" ahahahahahha
Tc electronic reverse delays do it like that btw
is it just me or has russell been hitting the gym, i thought he used to be super skinny
age probably as well, not many stay the same when they're in their 30's as they were in their 20's.
@@Two_Seat_Pete_FatA55 Nah, it's mostly because of exercise (Though it's probably a good gym membership and dedication)
I was interested to see the drummers new guitar
It was a vintage Gretsch Corvette she bought at Gruhn's.
One of the members is female? I know the vocalist is homosexual.
Their drummer is Louise Bartle.
Robert Sparling yup.....unfortunately Louise replaced Matt tong......which was also the same time I went off bloc party......
@@robertsparling917 i think the new drummer is also a homosexual.
What's the intro song??
Drive Me Away The Love Within by Bloc Party.
