I'm the trail maintainer on the AT by Sam Moore Shelter in the Rollercoaster. Always good to listen to your body. Many thru-hikers tell me a day or two of rest and going easy is better than pushing it and making it worse. Good luck! Hike On!

Yes…wise…listen to the body. Many do 8-10 miles a day for the first several weeks, allowing time to build muscle…trail legs and ankles…as you may know ( just a reminder)🙂🙏

I went SOBO out of Unicoi Gap on Monday for about 1.5. It was a hard hike, I’m out of shape and had about 20 pounds on my back. Recovering from covid. You will be fine, take the time you need.

This is Lampshade. Our merry group of 8 Atlanta mid-lifers came across you on trail during the first 100 miles in North Carolina and at The Grove Hostel in Franklin. We will be cheering for you. I have hiked the first 2000 miles and have done the first 1000 miles multiple times so let me know if you have any questions.

Rest and recover. It is a good idea to carry a few extra packets of oatmeal and Carnation Essentials so that you have something to eat if you get stuck on trail. An on trail ZERO can be very restful. All you need is the food and stove fuel. I hope that your gear and clothing are treated with Permethin. Hikers ahead of you are pulling ticks off. Happy Trails. Good Luck, Rick

Recovery time is key - the deficit builds up day after day if you extend too far. You’ll reach a balance point soon and then be able to extend from there. You’re doing great!

  • @carlfields

Take your time and recover. You can make it up later once you're stronger. Grab a 16oz water bottle and try to freeze it, or fill it with cold water on the trail and spend some time rolling your foot back and forth over it. And also take time to stretch your foot and legs. We're pulling for you.

In the 90' every day we took vitamin I for " Ibuprofen". (take it after breakfast to protect your stomach) You've got a good attitude and without injuries, you will probably make it. Rest and see if the foot pain goes away tomorrow. I had foot pain and it was the shoes...tried orthodontics, they helped a little but Concentrated Cherry juice got me through Maine. It was Gout. (uric acid build up from too much protein), Rest and drugs will help and take it easy for a couple of days. Good luck and keep up the good attitude,

I usually get pain in my ankles every early spring as I get back on uneven trails. I start with very low pack weight and work up the miles - then add weight in steps while also managing the miles so that I don't over do it. I do get some pain as I push the weight but it usually disappears in two to three weeks. If you are starting your thru hike soon, you should keep the miles low until your body adapts. It is too easy to push too hard and then have to take long zeros - or worse. Have a GREAT hike !

Just a heads up. I wouldn’t hang your Garmin off of that Durston tag. It’s not really meant to support anything. I think it’s more of like a guide if you want to use something goofy like a hydration bladder, or something. I could be completely wrong, but I would not trust that. I’d use the proper webbing that it overlaps. #manexplain
