The new auto backup visual feature is nice but Autodesk still needs to do more. The glTF looks to be my favorite feature and I hope you do a future video about it. Do you know if / how clients can comment directly on the exported glTF model?

You may just use xrefs or proxys to shorten autoback time . No need to save whole scene in one file. Autoback timer is cute, but letting program to make autoback in separate thread in background will be better solution, but maybe it will consume more RAM.
We still need a tools for working with different grids, more accurate spline trim/extend and snapping to crossed lines and keyboard shortcuts for spline editing, for example.
New featuress still looks like collection of bells and whistles.

I'm daily user (22 Years with 3D Max ) and Professional Autodesk Trainer for 3D Max - until Autodesk writes this program Correctly from scratch, which they haven't done for many years - I DON'T RECOMMEND THIS SHIT FOR ANYONE. I'm learning Rhino - and I will never go back to 3D Max - this Product should be the best in the world, but the company's lazy policy has disappointed me and I don't see any future. You want examples:
    1. The model does not work with any other software.
Autodesk gives you the option to export to a different format, but they have not prepared any satisfactory settings for this, only they give you the options for experimenting, thanks to which you will waste a few hours or days looking for settings that will ultimately not be good, there will always be errors in geometry and the model will always look like rubbish, the scattered elements are a standard and the lack of support in this matter deletes this program completely
    2. It is not possible to 3D print exactly the model you see on the screen, because your good graphics card shows you what you have to see, but in fact, when you try to export this model to 3D print - you can smear - you will waste your time.
He writes here about my 22 years of experience. It cost me a lot of nerves to get everything printed as it should look like. Forget it and prepare yourself to stress and wasted days. Autodesk supports nothing, and Nothing can help you. You like to waste your time - Work in 3D Max
    3. Extremely heavy files, and corruption, Ghost objects, invisible animations and many more different kinds of suspensions even with a 48GB card and 256 RAM - The program throws, a complete crap.
    4. Viewport - it's a tragedy - even the fastest computer will not make you work faster in 3D max - forget about it. Many objects and modifications will overwhelm his operational abilities because the program is badly written and nobody has changed it for over 25 years.
The program is the most expensive and the worst !!! and the visual change of the icons is not a Program Update, because the package is still the same crap.

I find your comment hard to believe and either 1) the common redundant "I use Blender" comment from unprofessional tribalism which has weaseled its way into 3D unfortunately as well, or 2) an honest comment from someone that simply is using 3DS Max for the wrong reasons for 20 odd years.
I am going to assume it is the latter, seeing as you focus in matte painting and concept art. Both aspects I would say Max is definitely not strong in.
Way I see it, each tool has its advantages and disadvantages, and you use the best tool in your arsenal for the job.
For example modelling. 3DS Max was light-years ahead from Blender before these additions. After 17 years myself I find it hard to believe that if you used Max for modelling that you then found Blender being a better solution. Aside from 3DS Max being better at it, the speeds alone after so many years using said better modelling tool would multiply these strengths of Max over Blender even more.
Shame to think you might actually be a pro and yet add such troll comments as the Autosave. Because the new retopology is a small addition, right? You are right, there are way too many 3D Software solutions out there that can do retopology and also maintain UV coordinates. What was I thinking in getting excited over it. New snap tools on every level, also unimportant right? Man, why would anyone want tools to make the best modelling software out there even better? Performance improvements? Why would anyone want that. I mean, its not like people brag about performance on other software, right? Why would anyone want Max to run more polygons faster is beyond me. Man, that autosave though! 👍
      Whatever. You do you.
I for one thank Blender. Max up to 2021 was stale and in a seriously bad place. They needed a slap in the face and thankfully Blender came along and did just that to push them forward with actually making proper improvements to the software. And I am thankful to Blender and also optimistic that the best is yet to come. 2022 alone had more improvements and additions from 2022.2 and 2022.3 than 2021 had in its entirety (what was it, the ability to bake materials? Clap clap Autodesk... a feature 3 years behind the competition).
More so, adding an indie license for 3DS Max which is dirt cheap now makes it even more evident that they are scared of their competition. And this is a good thing.
3DS Max needed a kick in the nuts for years now, no argument there. When a developer turns around and says things like "why would we add this to 3DS Max when we have a plugin that does it", then you know their head is in the wrong place and deep in somewhere where it shouldn't be. Thankfully this seems to not be the case anymore. So I will be the first to call them out on their bs, but to continue to whine after they finally get on track, well that is just backward.
And I really do hope Blender continues to improve, competition is making every tool better. And the more tools for us to chose from each one for different needs and tastes, the better.
Blender does some things better, and in other things....... well Id rather staple my sack to the wall and hit it with a hammer than bend over backwards to do something I can do in Max in 5 mins.
      Cheers.
I'll go check that autosave feature out now.

      @davidedwardsme 2 года назад

@@DCFHazardRebornChannel Well granted, I do find Max modeling tools far more efficient than any other program including blender. However thats likely because ive been using Max tools since the early 2000s every day. Aside from the weakness, where i feel Max fails; is animation tools and workflow. While you might see most of my work online is DMP and Concepts, its definitely not the limitations of what i use Max for. DMP really is 3d environment art these days. I also do a lot of animation related work, especially using mocap data and NLA workflows. Max .. what can i say; i'm sure Autodesk are intentionally dragging their feet with Max to force people to use Maya for animation. Needless to say i can rebuild all the great animation tools in Maya for less than a 100$ with blender plugins ... to keep .. forever. I'm talking face capture tools, mocap, rigging tools, NLA, animation layers etc ... all far better than Maya. Have you ever tried to use IKhumans in Maya with ITS OWN NLA tools LOL ... OH FML!! Its a mess!! LOL Then we come to rendering, and yes, Max isn't really the issue with that. I'm talking Vray. I just dont get it ... i feel quite confident with VRay and using the tools. However i can get equally nice results in Cycles in a fraction of the time with far less effort. Cycles just gives good results .. no Effing around with crazy settings ... granted i'm an artist, not a scientist or engineer lol ... but thats the thing with blender .. it simplifies everything and gives equally great results. Blender isn't ammune though. In two areas i see big issues; memory management and asset / scene management. I love Mayas scene management, how you can nest scenes into scenes and such. Blender seems to really suck in this; which for large production, is a big deal. Here's the thing; Max / Maya >> a small team of developers getting excited over a few less than great features once a year. Blender >> thousands of developers innovating and iterating tools every week! Max >>> over night to render a shot. Blender, 1 hour to render the same shot with better results ... just my experience :)

    • @DCFHazardRebornChannel
      @DCFHazardRebornChannel 2 года назад

@@davidedwardsme I have no idea about those render times and if the issue is user end, I really don't have any issues tbh. When was the last time you rendered with Max?
Probably depends on what aspects you use as well. For example, rendering with VRay environment fog took me on a space shuttle I made 6 hours for a single shot. I wanted to kick the monitor in. 720p too. Rendering the same shot with Phoenix FD particles, aside from fog which was controlled and added smoke effects, more on the scene was volumetric clouds, and even flaming boosters with smoke themselves. Took 1.5hrs to render a much better result.
I am talking about as far as render standards go of course. "I really don't have any issues tbh" goes to say, compared to what the norm is. Haven't gotten as far as rendering in Blender, the thing has annoyed me beyond belief in more ways than one. And I do want to get into it, but unfortunately too much work to switch during projects 1, and 2 every time I see something in it I am not particularly over-impressed to the point that I must use it.
VRay was a pain in the behind for years though. Curious when was your last experience with that too? I never touched it because it was overly complicated for no reason. I am more from an artists standpoint as well. Scripting and the sort I leave for those that have interest in doing them. And VRay really was a pain. Not so much anymore. Its nothing more than just click and add at this point. Very straight forward and fast materials too. Their last ready to go SSS skin solution just works, the hair material looks simply brilliant (provided you have something to make good hair with like Ornatrix), and I have had little issues using it. In fact, I teach it at a graphical institute I work for doing seminars and have zero issue transferring all its functionality over to completely newcomers.
I am of a mind to try Arnold this time around though. I have to say its been impressing me for a while now and wanted to switch to give that a go as well.
Animation in Max? Come on man, its simply amazing! /sarcasm.
      Yes, it has fallen behind.
They are making steps to improve it though (this comes in place with saying that I trust they will keep down this path) and seeing the work the studio is working on to release, it is part of their pipeline. Improvements already to motion paths is a huge deal. But yeah I have the same impression, they wanted to make Maya their leading animation tool, and now there are two solutions, Blender and Maya, and in that area things are dim atm for Max. Motionbuilder has probably fallen even more behind, not functionality wise, but in terms of coverage. You don't even hear it exists anymore. It really should just be implemented and tossed into Maya and Max at this point. It seems useless to be a tool of its own. Luckily so far everything Ive needed to animate I have been able to handle with little issue. But yeah, no argument there it could be a lot better.
Which is why I mentioned, the best tool for the job. One of the main reasons I want to get into Blender is this, animation. I fear Max might actually get their head straight before I get the chance to migrate though, which is I guess good news for me in a way, and finalize their solutions they have been working on.
Along with plenty other neat additions I see they are working on.
From there on, animation aside, I have no issues with Max tbh. Modelling, its not because you have used it for years. It really is better. I even see student opinions after showing them the ins and outs for Max and its a good sample I would argue, people that do not have years of experience. And even they find that the depth in max for modelling is just on another level. Same way Autocad is on a whole different level for architecture.
So yeah, I can actualize pretty much anything I want in terms of modelling, and adding ZBrush to the mix pretty much makes the results have little to be jealous of from any other solution of range of solutions out there.
From there on, I am never the type to find an issue on a software I use and stick with it regardless for tribalistic insecurities, if you know what I mean, and will definitely dabble in whatever else gets the job done. Even compositing is far behind in Max. They are working on improving Bifrost, but yeah don't know how to feel about it. Will wait till they have something to show for it. So far though, modelling and putting worlds together........... well... I find no parallel. And this aspect alone saves me so much time, and better yet, allows me to be so much more creative, that its hard to think someone that models for so many years would leave Max behind for Blender. I mean, its a click away. Exporting, that is. You can model in one, take advantage of its strongest aspects, and then off to do the rest in Blender. Same as ZBrush, I would never use that for anything but organic modelling. Not even for hard surfaces. Max gets the job done in a tenth of the time.
So when they finally add even more significant changes to a modelling tool that has been so strong in modelling yet so little changed for so long, you can understand how I scratch my head at the implication of not being excited to try these new tools out and seeing how much better results I can get, how much faster, and how much more I can push myself.
From there, totally with you. One software lacks in an area? No need to waste time and dabble in it any further. Off to the next solution.
Speaking of. Did you see UE5 drop a few days ago?
Ok..... now that is one tool that for what it is doing, it is starting to get to a whole new level. First time I am excited for an UE release tbh.
At this rate we will probably capture screen videos within UE realtime settings and compile it to a final cinematic and be done. Doubt we will get any rendering faster than that 😆

Are you perhaps doing something wrong? It has been improved ages now. You simply select edges, turn them into seems, and then quick peel. It actually works as good as any function I've seen out there. Not as good in some cases as the completely automated ZBrush UV mapping, but that has issues still unfortunately in some cases, and nowhere near as adjustable as Max. So I am curious as to how you still find it difficult :/

@@marshal487 granted, and ZBrush has an auto UV too and so does Substance. There is a huge difference between "its too hard" and "I need it faster"... On your second statement I agree, there is always room for improvement and the faster and better the tools become the better for us using them. I just scratched my head when you said "so hard" when it is literally the easiest it will ever be right before the automated stage.
In my experience, automated UVs atm need improvement. They have several issues, ZBrush included, which are only fixable in a non automates tool. It seems to me as the industry's moves forward more fresh blood joins the fray and unfortunately their knowledge in 3D is lacking as I see time and time again their lack of knowledge on many areas, and ultimately lack of professionalism and experience, brings about poorly optimized results.
Like you usual ZBrush uv maps in some cases that, thanks to the model and how it perceives it in the algorithm, ends up taking half the uv space. Then they send you q supposedly 8k resolutions texture which is in fact 4k in detail, and they wonder why their results look subpar to the same equivalent. All because of automation and the fact not only they didn't bother looking at the uvws, but they don't even have a clue what is actually happening, brings about mediocre results.
Automated tools are awesome, and hope they get to it in 3dsmax as well, but its good to know behind the scenes as well, for further editing even when those automations drop.
One step at a time. We have Uvs for retopology which is a first, hopefully they can add more. There is a lot to improve which they have fallen behind on, so expecting it all done at once is unrealistic.

When 3dsmax real time render like unreal??? After 12 years in 3dsmax now i'm migrate to unreal. I use 3dsmax just for modeling, just in case. For more detail modeling i use quixel in unreal. I'm waiting for real-time rendering in 3dsmax

According to the roadmap sheen will be added to the physical material in the future but standard surface had sheen since max 2017 or 2018?

I've been using 3ds max from version 5. Smth around 2005. I decided to switch to blender recently because free open source softwares are being more popular and far from financial strategies that keeps ppl in demand.
I am happy so many comments did the same. I still use 3ds max but really barely! These are not the updates that can compete.

In the upgrade of every Autodesk software especially AutoCAD and 3Ds Max , will always have some changes to the shortcut keys that make the users seriously confused. I am still struggling with the short cut key of duplicating Poly and Element under editable poly modifier. If I missed out that I have to hold ctrl and shift at the same time. the result will be damn annoying. Not to mention if i switched to wireframe mode. I won’t probably notice that the polygon object is already messed up.

I use a Razor Tartarus game pad for all my apps. Just bind a hot key to whatever key makes sense for a fast workflow and avoid the keyboard . If you run out of keys bind the D-pad to change profiles.

3ds Max is very efficient as a modeling tool. Give it another month or two and you'll be glad for the switch. If nothing else I hope you could use a combo of the software, for the strengths of each. I'm sure your work just wants good results.

All the new features look great :D But as an animator I am sad that once again we are overlooked. Still the ancient curver editor. No decent way of savinge and loading animations on custum rigs. CAT rig which has a high potential but hasn't been updated for a decade... Arch Viz, you seem to have an open line to Autodesk, perhaps you can poke them a bit?

It's 2023 but it's sad that autodesk still has not updated default door and window library.
    Neither default foliage.
Autodesk should also work these points.
