  • In this video I go over the Mini cooper and its generations breaking down its reliability. I talk about the 1st Gen Mini cooper from 2002-2006, the 2nd Gen from 2007-2013 and finally the thirds gen from 2014 to present.
All the Mini coopers have their own pros and cons.

Buy a mini after 2015. They have improved reliability majorly.

more reliable, more power, more convenient interior, there are no down sides other than price which is similar to other "modern" cars.

I've owned a 2012 Mini JCW with the N14 engine, a Cooper S Coupe with the N18 engine and a 2018 Cooper S. They all had their strengths and weaknesses.
The 2012 Coupe was a looker due to it's unique body style and the engine was very reliable for me.
The JCW with the N14 was a nightmare, I only had it for a few years and had to so many engine repairs to keep it going, but it was a lot more fun to drive then the newer Minis. You should have mentioned the High Pressure Fuel Pump issue that ended up as a class-action lawsuit against BMW in the USA. I had to pay out of pocket to replace mine and costed thousands.
The 2018 has been solid, but it is a much larger and heavier car so you loose a lot of that edge-of-your-seat feeling.
In summary, Mini's are getting less exciting to drive while becoming more reliable. So you have to decided what's most important to you.

I have an r53. Last year of the supercharger with the Getrag transmission. I beat the hell out it. I do repairs myself. It's been dead on reliable and super easy to work on if you don't have sausage fingers and know what you're doing.
I would stay away from the turbos.

You nailed it. I have an R53. Bought for $7k with 75k miles. It needed a clutch job but, with YT videos, I did the clutch job, all of the bushings, supercharger service, LSD upgrade, and some suspension items. Now I’m 100% confident in my R53. The 04-06 with the Getrag is the way to go. Mini got it right with our models.

I have a 2003 R53 that I’ve owned since it was new. I have done all the service and repairs myself (once it was out of warranty). Aside from the small engine bay, it’s a fairly simple car to work on.

Your comment is a bit confusing. You do your own repairs, which is great! But, you said it is dead on reliable? Have the repairs been very minimal?

    • @druggie54

@@AutoMotivate Every vehicle will require repairs and preventative maintenance. I can say I've spent more money on upgrades than parts to keep it going. The great thing about solid older platforms is that most issues and fixes have already been documented should a problem arise. I've had the cooling fan resistor fail, fairly common and super easy to diagnose. Cost $30 for me to fix and that was three years ago. The engine is a stout little block and the transmission is also pretty damn good for the package size and what it can handle (I'm running more boost that stock). To me it always come down to involvement if you have something good to start with. I tear down the brakes and regrease them every spring so I can verify the condition and function of a primary system. I track down any leak and weird noise. If you like to drive and don't mind putting in minimal wrench time, I'd have to say the R53 gives you great bang for buck. You really can turn the thing into a street legal go-kart. I've owned everything from RX-7s to S8s and the R53 still makes me smile when I hear the blower whine, not to mention if something does happen to break it's not going to punish my wallet. Preventative maintenance is the key here. Changing out the supercharger oil can be a bit of a pain but after you do it a few times, it's a pretty chill way to spend an afternoon. I bought mine maybe four years ago with 130k on it. I've never been stranded or disappointed by build quality or reliability. My heated seats are still really hot and on a normal day I still have fun when walking 3 series BMWs down the highway.

its like the Fiat 500 Abarth, Its really fun to drive and is has a clean build quality but it shows heavy wear after 50,000 miles. When you get into the higher mileage you can tell it what was built to last and what was "built to warranty". The true test of longevity is to see what is being daily driven after 10 years, I still see first gen Honda CR-V's being daily driven and they came out 27-21 years ago(as of 2022).

I don’t understand the point that BMW does produce reliable engines… the mini coopers until 3. Gen doesn’t have a BMW engine even if the company was lead by BMW.
It was a Peugeot engine and that’s the reason why it wasn’t as reliable like a BMW engine!!!
