    Thanks for this video. I was thinking seriously about buying a 'new' Countryman PHEV as it seemed to tick all the boxes for me after the battery upgrade extended it's range. I was just waiting for the showrooms to open up post 'Covid' but, as that model has the 3 cylinder engine and reliability and a smooth ride are V important to me, your comments about the coarseness and possible unreliability have made me step back. I'm still looking at reviews of the Countryman PHEV and have been in contact with a local dealership, but haven't got as far as taking up an invite to the showroom! One reason I'm considering the PHEV is that, maybe, 95% of my trips would be on Max eDrive. Hi Mike Happy 2022, I wanted to learn from you, which is more reliable and effective in terms of cost management in terms of lifetime repairs and fuel efficiency between a 4 cylinder base mini cooper second generation 2011 to 2013 and 2014 to 2016 3 cylinder engine. I say so because I want to upgrade to a three cylinder 2014 but am a bit skeptical and I need a bit more information on the 3 cylinder engine reliability.

    • @MikeMDs
      @MikeMDs  2 года назад +1

      Good question. The fuel savings on the new 3 cylinder will not likely make up for the maintenance costs in the long run. The 3 cylinder has proven unreliable. Additionally it is noisy and vibrates to the point of annoyance. Only get the 4 cylinder (S model). A Little less fuel efficiency, more reliable and a whole lot more power.

    Hi Mike, great video! Am thinking of getting a Mini ONE which has a 1.5 102bhp engine but am concerned by what you suggest in this video that the three cylinder engines are/were less reliable than the four cylinder counterparts? Is this the case? I got the impression that you are suggesting only the four cylinder engines, even in their updated form (from 2016 onwards), are more reliable and stable than the three cylinder ones and this concerns me because the ONE, for sure, which is more affordable and has a less sporty suspension, and is cheaper to insure, comes with a three cylinder engine. Would not want to invest over 16k only to find it started developing problems thanks to it being a smaller engine! I also wonder if Mini overcame the issues that plagued many owners with the ECU and power steering; oil starvation and timing belt problems. Your thoughts on this one most welcome!

      i own and drive (everyday) a 3 cyl 2021 cooper 136hp model, no issues. (period). Very frugal, very reliable (google it) and plenty of power. Tis engine is also provided in the Bmw 3 series, and has been in the hood of 1 series for a long time - not to mention the Bmw e8). I don't know of any serious complaint about the B38 engine from anybody i know in Europe whatsoever (and i know a lot of mini and Bmw owners). I don't know of anybody that had a serious reliability issue on those after the early years 2013 to 2015 (the 1.6 and 2.0 of the mk2 (before 2013) where somewhat troublesome, this ones are not, across the lineup). Most of the new gasoline engines (in Europe) are 3cyl - honda and Ford have a 1.0L award winning 3 Cyl - and the bmw 1.5L 3 Cyl was also awarded one of the best in 2014 - again: google it). Don't worry.

      Hi and congratulations on your purchase! You will love your MINI. I have a video on extended warranties and what to watch for. You can search for it in the search bar. Any warranty is better than no warranty. There are many plastic parts on newer cars these days that fail and leak oil and coolant. This will be your main maintenance costs as the vehicle ages. The mileage on that MINI is high already. I'm hoping they addressed any issues already on the vehicle. Ask if the warranty will cover known failure points on this car like rubber oil gaskets for oil leaks. Plastic items such as oil filter housing assembly. Which is common to leak either or both engine coolant or oil.

      Pre-2012 R56 Minis use the N14 engine which are known to have loads of problems. Timing chain and the water pump are 2 things will most likely need attention in the N14. The later N18 in the 2012 models had a lot less issues with the timing chain, but the same water pump issue the N14 had, unless if you buy a Mini equipped with an N18 engine built after March of 2012 (so pretty much any Mini Cooper S Model past 2013).

    Hey Mike, I’m really finding your videos extremely helpful in guiding me to my 2nd Mini. I need to be at 20K out the door. I live in NY and would like a Countryman S. I am looking at 2014 - 2017. How do I find a Mini specialist? And if I can’t, can I depend on pre-certification? I hope you can find time to help me. Gratefully yours

    • @MikeMDs
      @MikeMDs  3 года назад +3

      In that case a Certified Pre-Owned dealer would be your best bet. The certification brings the vehicle back to original and addresses any issues. Also it comes with a mechanical warranty. If too expensive then try a used non CPO from the dealers inventory. If not, then you'll have to find a used MINI from a random place and find a specialist to do a pre-purchase inspection for you to make sure it is in good shape. You can also try CAR-MAX. They have good selections and you can purchase their mechanical warranty. One of the best extended aftermarket warranties out there.

    • @MikeMDs
      @MikeMDs  4 года назад

      Hard to say. The n18 issues are more predictable as they have been around longer. It is also the better engine of the 2nd gen. If you find a clean one with low miles then I would jump on it. The third gen S is more reliable so far , but when it needs serviced there aren't to many shops that will touch them besides the dealer. It is a completely different vehicle now.

      @japanwatchconnection It was made with BMW, engine block is PSA, with engineering teams of both. Anyway it is still crap, they ruined beautiful r56 chassis with terrible unreliable engines.

    • @wellwh0
      @wellwh0 4 года назад

      japanwatchconnection That is true all Pugs and Citroens were crapy as well and they continued to use them even after BMW ditch them.
      Though I found article somewhere i think Evo, BMW had far more engineers on team. Engine block was taken from old Pugs. BMW gave all technology, VANOS, Valvetronic, etc....and also they unreliability 😂
      You take 2 unreliable brands in last two decade and you get Prince....that engine didn’t have a chance from start.

    All tho this 2015 Countryman ALL 4 mini is an “S” w with 49K it’s $18,995. You say in this video better to buy a 2016 to present. Mini’s are going like hot cakes so should I just take the 2015 S ALL 4 and spend the $2000 on the 125K to 60 month’s CARMAX Warranty?. I appreciate the guidance cause I don’t have any brothers , lol., I stayed away from 3 cylinder and trying not to be emotional, The the 2016 Countryman S ALL 4 had 11,000 more miles and was $2,000 more. I promise I won’t bug you anymore after this .🤐

    • @MikeMDs
      @MikeMDs  3 года назад

      You will be happy with either one. The warranty is a smart move as they have one of the best. In this situation I'd go with the 2015. Just be sure to check your oil level often and perform oil services every 5000 miles. Instead of what the factory recommends at around 10,000 miles. I wish you the best.

      I’ve been crying for the last 15 minutes (yes like a girl). My mechanic of 24 years said NO NO NO. If you buy it please don’t bring it to me. He just fixed a mini for $12,00, the owner did not take care of it, I would. My girlfriend has had a used one for 3 years no issues, never got a PPI. I even had a 2003 or 4, CVT, Pepper White, no problems. In 2 of your videos you said 2016 and later are great. I’ve got a 30 day money back guarantee. If I spring for the $2000 warranty they have to repair it? Right? I’m so mad. I WANT A MINI! About this 🤐 sorry.

  • @andrewpreston4127

    They've only been making the (BMW) Mini since, what was it, 2001. You'd think that by now, it could have reliability as a given. The plain fact is that BMW's are not particularly reliable cars, no matter which model you're talking about, BMW badged or Mini badged. Used car sales guys hate them, and view them as cars just waiting for the next thing to go wrong. And usually expensively.
