@@jessijo3477 I think it's deeper than money... there's reason to believe the US establishment wanted the loss of life. If you check out Catherine Austin Fitts the former deputy head of Housing and Urban Development, she discovered that when Congress failed to reform entitlement programs in the 90s the deep establishment (the ones dealing with realpolitik, geopolitical long game, existential risks, etc.) decided there was no political will amongst the political class nor amongst the populace to do the necessary austerity (which wouldn't be so necessary if the US focused less on militarism, corporatism and enriching the elites) that they needed to put initiatives into effect to lower the life expectancy of US citizens and in so doing lower the expected burden on entitlement programs. This would explain a surprising amount of the apparent greed, malice and incompetence of the last 30 or more years.

Dr. Sackler said. He acknowledged that higher-dose opioids could lead to greater profits for the company. His profiting off of this dangerous drug, using lies and false marketing, killed friends and family of mine, and destroyed my life and almost killed me. That falls on this Sack of lying garbage. As a combat veteran with a broken back, I praised this drug for years. Then, I decided to get off of it, and that, that alone was the hardest most painful experience of my life.
I see you and I hear you brother. I too got hurt on numerous occasions after 12 years as a combat Infantryman. Us combat vets endure tons of life altering injuries, accidents, broken bones, sprains, etc. not only that, but add in early onset arthritis and joint degeneration, and you have the perfect opioid candidate in drig manufactures eyes! After the Military figures out that we can’t job anymore, the next step is to either be Med boarded, or discharged out. Uncle Sam now leaves you in the hands of a VA healthcare system that early on didn’t give a single fuck about veterans medical needs. In the late 2000’s and early 2010’s, the only solution was to throw pills at us, mostly over the phone and without treating us in person. My addiction story started with getting med boarded out, and the VA prescribing me a 45 day script of Vicodin. As my tolerance built up, I got all the way up to smoking any type of opiate I could get my hands on (including heroin). After they eventually cut me off instantly and with no program in place to help with withdrawal symptoms, I reverted back to my excellent acquiring skills I learned while still enlisted just to feel well. It led me down a road to living a nightmare where I eventually lost everything, my marriage, my family, my freedom for a bit, and almost my life. Thankfully, after intensive and sober living inpatient rehabilitation centers ran by a new more responsive VA healthcare system, I’m now 2 1/2 years clean and sober. But I’ll admit that It’s the hardest thing I’ve ever done. Continue the mission brother! I got your six! And even after 8 years, you too can get off this nightmare ride! Go back to when still serving, and remember your training. You’ll realize that you always had the ability to kick your addiction! I and your fellow veteran brothers and sisters believe in you 100%! I promise you!
My heart goes out to you man. Kendrick Lamar’s album Damn opens with a story about a Blind woman who has lost her way. Kendrick intended The blind woman to represent the justice system. The crack epidemic in his hometown of Compton is almost identical to the opioid crisis. I’m just another human being. My heart goes out to you.
He didn't lie or false market. He's a hero who tried to save people from pain. "Combat veteran" is a lie, told by liars. It's code for war monger and terrorist.
He is such a jerk. I was hooked on 160 mg of OxyContin a day for over 20 years, prescribed by my physician back in 1998. According to my MD, that was the long-term plan for me, because I was in so much pain after having had seven spine surgeries and a staff infection. I am 72 years old now, and feel that I lost so much of my parenting, time with my grandkids, etc… it took me about three years, maybe more, to wean down so that I was finally off of it. I’m so angry about this. I trusted everyone. They were telling lies. They knew it
We watch someone like this and we ask, "Why is it that so many wealthy people are so soulless?" But we're posing the question the wrong way: It's BECAUSE of their soullessness and ruthlessness that they BECOME and REMAIN so wealthy. The soullessness leads to the wealth, and not the other way around.
That's a neat thought but it's literally been shown scientifically that when someone gets such absurd amounts of money like these people, it physiologically changes your brain, causing symptoms similar to actual brain damage like behavioral changes, spontaneous fits of rage, and a sociopathic lack of empathy or connection to others.

The fact that many people are here bc of the dopesick and painkiller shows is one of the reasons the opioid epidemic rages on today and has been for decades. People are just learning the story and becoming informed way too late through these shows. This was going on in the 90’s and early 2000’s and mainstream people are largely unaware or worried about the stigma related. I am in recovery from opioids but still have to admit there was an element of genius to the entire operation. I would recommend reading Empire of Pain for a more in depth picture of the Sacklers.

My cousin got addicted to Oxy. I didn’t know what it was until I watched Dopesick. This is really sad and reveals how evil a heart can become. Also, the actor who portrayed Richard Sackler totally nailed this guys mannerisms. It’s also interesting to see the non scripted version. Way less intense without the music. Same sad ending ☹️.
I do 4 days on 3 days off. Even when I was doing a few 40's a day (friend was prescribed them so I didn't have to pay), I never got/get bad withdrawal symptoms. Mild at best. If I had to pay street prices, I'd quit.
@@MrDeamon1 quitting is really hard. I didn’t think I was as hooked as I was, but I finally realized I was taking OxyContin to keep the withdrawal away. I have a lot of pain going on, almost 24 seven. When I was on OxyContin, I was in almost as much pain as I am now. God bless you!

"African Americans had been spared the full brunt of the opioid epidemic: doctors were less likely to prescribe opioid painkillers to Black patients, either because they did not trust them to take the drugs responsibly or because they were less likely to feel empathy for these patients and want to treat their pain aggressively." The one time racism worked for us.
They initially heavily targeted poor rural white communities, like the mining towns in West Virginia where blue collar workers were likely to suffer injuries from physical labor.

How many Purdue entities there are? Sackler: "I don't know."
“I’m not sure” he replied, when asked if he was a director of Purdue. Can’t even admit his role in a company he flat out owns. The level of deceit these people attempted (and in most cases achieved) is truly astonishing.
After back surgery, I was hooked on Oxy for over a year. I spent two months in serious withdrawal and a year in moderate to mild withdrawal after I quit cold turkey. I wouldn’t wish Oxy addiction on my worst enemy. These criminals have caused countless deaths and thousand of years of pure agony, experienced my millions worldwide. Oxy needs outlawed. It can be properly prescribed, but 95% of scripts are legal heroin dealing, plain and simple.
Legal heroin? Heroin is 25-50x more potent than morphine while oxycodone is only 4x more powerful than morphine. So oxycodone is not as powerful as heroin. And examples of this are I've never actually seen anyone nod from 20mg of oxycontin which is alot or 40mg. When the pill is crushed and injected or snorted it's powerful but heroin when injected or snorted will have you playing games with your life. And the scary thing is, is that these days heroin is fentanyl and not diacetylmorphine(heroins drug name)
Wow, at about 1 hour 50 min., Saying they made sure doctors knew oxy was twice as potent as morphine...the lawyer reads his email "we are well aware of the view, held by many physicians that oxy is weaker than morphine...and we don't plan to do anything about that." He responds to the email "I agree." Then he says to the man conducting the deposition "well, we knew what we were talking about." I'm sorry, why were you speaking in code then? What was it, backwards day. Come on, I can't believe these guys aren't going to get a real punishment.
Listening carefully to what he says at that point, Sackler is actually describing the way that people were using the terms "stronger" and "weaker" interchangeably, while actually referring to quite different concepts. Something that people routinely do. While strength nominally refers to drug potency or effectiveness, some were also using this to refer to the drug's "personality", as related in those emails. Personality here refers to the cultural perception of the drug, especially of it's safety, addictive potential, association with near-death conditions etc. It's actually a substantive and relevant distinction, and the lack of appreciation for it in the wider public discourse leads to what we see in mass media portrayal of opioids today. Media routinely refers to drug potency with the implication of dangerousness ("Fentanyl, a KILLER drug that is 50-100x stronger than morphine!...") When really, drug potency in the pure sense is not necessarily connected to either addictiveness or dangerousness. Maybe it's the other way around; maybe media portrays it that way and we fill in the blanks. But you certainly see this implied all over the place. And it's not helping.
Just finished "Dopesick" and I like how Sackler begins as a sort of crusader against chronic pain -- his motives are heavily blurred. Then, by the 8th and final episode, his true colors shone through. What a remarkable performance by Stuhlbarg.
"That's what [my email] said, but I didn't mean it" (referring to his trying to market oxy in Germany as a non- abusable drug to increase sales) -- this guy is not only slimy, but he outright lies when he thinks he can get away with it. He shows no remorse for the hundreds of thousands of people his products has murdered from the pandemic that he knowingly created by his marketing schemes. It's very disturbing to see how Dr. Sackler has dedicated his intellectual horsepower to the pursuit of making money in a sociopathic manner that has caused devastation for so many, and particularly ironic that he clothes his war against humanity as his contribution to relieving suffering. His karmic debt is staggering.
@Ryan Webber Hello totally-not-a-sackler-family-relative person, sounds to me like some blame shifting exactly as a Sackler or some Sackler bootlicker would do :^)
So he was acting like a billionaire? You do not reach that level of obscene wealth without having a sociopathic mind and climbing the piles of bodies on your way to the top. It is the “american dream”
Pharmaceutical companies make drugs, which as far as I can tell, have done us far more GOOD than harm... Opioids included. What I would say is: One day, people will understand that capitalism incentivizes corporate greed.
So evil and repulsive. But, at least, we can finally put a face to the opioid tragedy. 😔 I am worried about the fact that justice was never served with this case. He speaks as if he will walk free with his billions intact, and that is exactly what happened. It is scary that no-one can hold the Sackler family to account for their greedy and inhumane actions.
I agree that he's an awful person who has profited enormously off the suffering of millions of people, but as far as putting a face to the still ongoing the opioid tragedy, it's important to remember that it was not the work of 1 person, and that there are perhaps many thousands of people who also share responsibility, including other members of his family but also other employees of his company and other drug companies, as well as salespeople and doctors who acted unethically and even illegally, and profited from the suffering of others. There are many, many doctors who severely overprescribed Oxy and similar drugs and they make me just as angry -- if not more angry -- than the Sacklers do. If a doctor is being financially incentivized to overprescribe a very powerful and potentially dangerous medication, it's still entirely that doctor's fault if they go ahead and do overprescribe that drug. I feel like the doctors who have overprescribed opioids sometimes get overlooked, or their culpability gets overlooked. A doctor is entirely responsible for understanding the effects -- positive and potentially negative -- of a drug they are prescribing, and for being extremely conservative about prescribing such powerful, addictive, and deadly drugs like opioids. The excuse that they were fooled by a sales pitch is a totally useless excuse, and in fact only further shows that person to be wholly unqualified to practice medicine.
@@timwakefield I agree that they are many more people who share the responsibility. He is clearly not the only guilty person in the story, but his contibution is significant. Why would you say that doctors have a "useless excuse"? If people show false and manipulated data/information, I think even the most qualified doctors can be fooled. Even the court determined that the drug was not promoted to doctors according to the law.
@@nadyakirilovamihaylo Here is why I think it is a useless excuse for doctors to say that they were fooled by a sales pitch: They are entirely aware that the sales and marketing of the drug are coming from the company or companies which manufacture and sell that drug, and thus there is a very obvious bias when a company markets their own product, since they are also the ones who stand to profit from sales of that product. Every doctor should be at least be skeptical of data being shown to them from a drug company marketing its products. It is absolutely necessary to confirm any statements made by a company marketing its own drugs with analysis and data taken from other, neutral, sources. The potency, addictive qualities, and danger of overdose from opioids has been common knowledge for many, many decades, not just among doctors but among laypeople as well. The more powerful and potentially dangerous a drug is, the more conservative doctors should be in prescribing it, and the use of opioids should be a last resort only when all other, safer methods of pain relief have failed. Why were some doctors prescribing it at rates much, much higher than other doctors, all of whom were treating patients with very similar ailments, and all of whom were aware of the existence of Oxycontin? That's a HUGE red flag that the doctors who were prescribing it at extremely high rates relative to other doctors were not always acting in the best interests of their patients, since those doctors were being financially incentivized to write more prescriptions. They were more interested in personal profits and financial bonuses than in providing quality care for their patients. If a doctor is easily manipulated into overprescribing an extremely powerful, potentially addictive, and potentially deadly drug then that doctor has simply not done their own due diligence in studying the effects of that drug. For a doctor to claim they were fooled by sales people simply shows that doctor to be lazy and naive at best, and predatory and uncaring at worst. Either way that would mean they are unfit to practice medicine. EDIT: To be clear, this in NO WAY absolves the company who was providing the false information of any wrongdoing, and they are extremely culpable and acted extremely unethically and in many cases illegally, and people like Richard Sackler disgust me. I just think it's important to hold doctors who grossly overprescribed the drug culpable as well, and their qualifications to practice medicine should be seriously called into question.
@@timwakefield 110% agree with you. It's nice every once in a while to see someone else who has a more complete grasp on the issue. Unfortunately, it seems people nowadays impatiently want a quick conclusion to huge issues so they, lets say, watch a short TV series and later skim through a couple RUclips videos that they happened to notice had some connection to the series they just watched and by the end of all that they think they have enough information surrounding the context of the issue to form a solid conclusion. All in good heart nonetheless but still there's ALOT more to this issue than the limited amount of info. contained within one short TV series and/or one rich family who owned ONE Pharma. co. that produced ONE of the MANY common opioid drugs that just so happened to have a sticky name making it easy to remember, so it became a household name for all opioids, similar to what Tylenol is to acetaminophen or really all OTC pain relievers. I think people should be willing to spend a little more time digging into big issues before making concrete opinions or conclusions.

@TT No, Itching is not part of the withdrawal. The itching is part of the half-life after taking the pills. I think you’re talking about how crack cocaine addicts are portrayed in the media. They show a ton of itching and twerky, jerky muscle movement. For opioid addicts, you see what’s called “the nods” which basically looks like narcolepsy in some users. Some addicts will say that during the withdraw stage, you’ll get restless legs, but the movement actually helps alleviate the sick feeling, particularly while trying to sleep. Heavy opioid users who are going thru withdrawal will also experience nausea, and diarrhea. This is because opioids tend to constipate heavy users so much that while it begins to leave your system, it creates havoc on your digestive system.
I had a doctor try to give me a prescription of oxy and I was like “What the Heck?! That craps addictive! Why would you prescribe that?! You must know it’s addictive!”. I just ask that no one forget what these people did, how they made their money, and who took money from them to protect them from all the families of the people who are currently dead. Money is not worth one life. The fact that these people didn't care at any point about the staggering number of people dying and continued business as usual is comparable to other massacres that have occurred. No problem, these people will skate because the correct politicians have been paid. Gotta love our crooked politicians. We are not free, we are just their loyal subjects. What amazes me about this deposition and others I have seen are how undereducated these lawyers are about the promotion of pharmaceuticals. I was in Pharma for over 30 years and actually spent 2.5 years with Purdue just before they shut down. If these lawyers understood more about the real world and not what they think Pharma sales is about, they could have asked much better questions that would shed much more light. They don’t even understand the difference between Sales and Marketing.
@Perry Egger you are making assumptions regarding these prosecutors that spent many years building this case. You (or I) have no knowledge of agreements made for allowable topics/questions to get to this deposition. There is some minor discussion right at beginning regarding mentioning entities of Purdue companies, limiting liabilities of certain individuals, etc. Honestly surprised they got anything out of them; the family is powerful, resourceful, smart and completely unethical. I'd give them a pass for now. They did okay.
@Elaine Greenwood Sales is actually selling the item/service to the desired population, Marketing is about creating a want, driving up the demand and therefore increasing the sales of aforementioned items/services. Both fields are heavily reliant on psychology; pharma reps are given psychological profiles of the doctors they are trying to sell to in order to better understand the ways they can exploit their potential client and help with ensuring they make the sale. Marketing is about finding the best way to psychological exploit the wants and needs of their target audience in order to make them believe that they need to go out and ask for/buy advertised/marketed items/services.
People immediatley vilify this man, and I do understand why. On the other hand, for one oxycodone has been around since 1917 and prescribed in the US since 1950. The other thing is, they made a product that is extended release. If you follow prescribing guidelines and don't crush or break the pill, this is less abusive than how people illegaly take it and less than instant release versions. They made a product, and people liked it, so it sold well. Obviously there have been doctors that pushed these pills and there have been pill mills, but contrary to many peoples' beliefs, doctors are extremely hesitant to start someone on this medication. Many feel that it is like jumping through hoops to get it prescribed at all, even back into the ealry to mid 2000's. On the flip side, understating how addictive it is and incentivizing doctors is messed up and they should be accountable to some degree for this.

Thanks for your service. I’m glad to hear you able to get off. I’m about 8 years in. Not so luckily yet.
He is such a jerk. I was hooked on 160 mg of OxyContin a day for over 20 years, prescribed by my physician back in 1998. I am 72 years old now, and feel that I lost so much of my parenting, time with my grandkids, etc… it took me about three years, maybe more, to wean down so that I was finally off of it.
Sorry for what you went through. I am glad you are doing better
You are utterly insane.
Wow, at about 1 hour 50 min., Saying they made sure doctors knew oxy was twice as potent as morphine...the lawyer reads his email "we are well aware of the view, held by many physicians that oxy is weaker than morphine...and we don't plan to do anything about that." He responds to the email "I agree."
Then he says to the man conducting the deposition "well, we knew what we were talking about." I'm sorry, why were you speaking in code then?

Oxy again well this time my friend didn’t have a chance to fight for years to get off it His Dr. Cut him off the drug He died of an over dose or was it suicide? My love goes out to all the families that lost a loved one due to any drugs.

The lack of emotions on this guy is unmatched
I had shoulder surgery in 2017 and my Dr. prescribed a massive amount of Oxycodone. Like, 60+ pills. I took one. It took the pain away very nicely but I had an allergic reaction--it made me itch like crazy. I can't believe the Dr. thought I would need to take THAT many.
Itching is an extremely common side effect of opioid use
@Crossed Out sholl do😂😂💯😩 dat mean the yerky hitting its good
@TT No, Itching is not part of the withdrawal.
@Crossed Out that’s why I was bout to say I loved it…

I had a doctor try to give me a prescription of oxy and I was like “What the Heck?! That craps addictive! Why would you prescribe that?! You must know it’s addictive!”. And he said “yes if people keep taking it. What would you like instead?” oh my gawd-this doctor would have given me anything!!! I said “something that will help but NOT be addictive!” So I left with an antibiotic. And just took Tylenol.
Wow this is unbelievable ‘….if people keep taking it…’ SURE they do because it’s freaking ADDICTIVE! Congratulations to the sane decision of questioning your doctor, not everyone did/does it

This reminds me so much of what goes on in government today. People like this man are connected with extremely powerful people (judges, high level executives) that get paid off in order to push themselves to the top.

“Why aren’t we getting more cancer sales?” Pretty much sums things up.
I know this is off topic from what the actual deposition is about, but this video never fails to send me to sleep within about 20 minutes of listening to it!
How often do you use it to go to sleep?
I hope it’s not habit-forming
I listen to this every single night. I’ve actually spent money to download it.. My fiancé now even ask to sleep with it on. Works like a charm! Used to have to take ambien and Xanax to sleep 8 months pregnant and all I need is this video! Def habit forming.. but don’t recommend against it.

Here after watching “Pain Killer” on Netflix. My goodness. How can someone be so horrendously cruel? To not only ignore the pain, suffering, and death that OxyContin has caused people and their loved ones, but do it pretending to be some sort of hero while using people’s moments of vulnerability to his advantage… unforgivable. I hope the guilt makes him sick.
Not so unlike any big player who believes they are right. I mean look at the US in general. Overthrow entire nations on fabricated evidence, massacring hundreds of thousands of children (Vietnam, Cambodia, Loas, Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria, Yemen etc), all because they believe they are right, and good, and doing god's work.
And THEN blaming their victims and labeling them criminals.

Racism kinda saved the black community. Black people didn’t got prescribed the OxyContin cause of in deference to their pain. Meanwhile the white suburban precious citizens got OxyContin like a candy and when it became the Opioid Crisis, it became national crisis.

@@jimcarlile7238Come on man. 10s of thousands of people are dieing out here due to simplistic ways of thinking about these issues which ultimately create nothing but stigma. People are dieing of opioid overdoses this isn't an alcohol problem lol, you might as well be comparing Tylenol to opioids dude. Also your statement is equivalent to you comparing how awful a certain food tastes to you compared to another food. Everyones neurobiology is different and everyone experiences a drug in slightly different ways. Some people get nauseous, dizzy or lightheaded with opioids some people, including me, (in a very limited description) get very euphoric, extremely energetic, anxiety instantly vanishes, and ellated with no nausea, no itching, and no dizziness just happiness (at least I did before developing a severe dependency starting at the age of 14). So basically good for you 👏 but you just so happen to be in the percentage of the population that obviously isn't prone to developing an addiction or even a dependency to a drug. The rest of us are just the lucky ones that struggle with addictions and physical dependencies that take over your life, finances, and emotions and control you like a puppet. Hoping depositions for large cases like this are now digitised for all participants because most of the time was spent trying to find where they are on the page.
Richard Sackler should be serving lifetime sentences for every life he conspired to ruin.
I know alot of people that aren't here anymore, but the most important issue seems to be to protect this guy and his family.
I don't know what will happen to these people on judgment day but protect that precious money you made. I would curse but they aren't worth it. The laws that apply to us, do not apply for them. We scream and cry and demand our own enslavement.

01:53 observe his facial characteristics before during and after he is sworn in. And the quick look he gave his lawyer.
Where does it says this?
I’m curious? @perry eager How do we promote pharmaceuticals in this country?
The lawyer does seem a bit slow.
I don't know
This is the problem with rich greedy people who don’t care about anything else but money. All you have to do is look in their eyes and you can see the bullshit and all the lies in their soul. This man has no emotion, not a care in the world about lives that were destroyed. This is what gets me so angry about people like him who doesn’t give a shit about anything but money and power. May god have mercy on him and all that are involved in this scandal.
